STORYLINE:

Germany marked the 47th anniversary of the Berlin Wall's construction on Wednesday with Parliament President Norbert Lammert and Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit laying wreaths at a memorial at one of the few sections of the barrier still standing.

Communist East Germany started building the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961.

East German leaders aimed to seal off their border with the capitalist enclave of West Berlin in an attempt to stop a haemorrhage of people to the West.

The so-called "anti-fascist protection rampart" stood for 28 years.

Its opening on November 9, 1989 was greeted with scenes of jubilation and was followed less than a year later by the demise of East Germany.

Much of the concrete wall, which snaked around West Berlin for 96 miles (160 kilometres), was swiftly demolished.

Berlin Mayor, Klaus Wowereit, said on Wednesday it was vital to "remember the victims and that is a commitment of every generation and also show on the other side that the Wall and dictatorship like the DDR should not be allowed to happen again and that is duty of every generation."

On Tuesday, artist Ben Wagin marked part of the ground in the new government sector of Berlin where the Berlin Wall formerly stood.

He did this to draw attention to the absence of original parts of the Wall still standing in Berlin and to highlight the importance of placing remaining parts under conservation.

Estimates of how many people died attempting to cross the Berlin Wall vary, researchers for the Berlin Wall Memorial said last week that their latest estimate is 136.

An estimated 700-800 died along the entire length of the border between East and West Germany, they said, while thousands of people managed to escape.

German cabinet minister Wolfgang Tiefensee, who is overseeing efforts to rebuild the former East Germany, which still struggles economically, said this week that the government is preparing celebrations in Berlin, Leipzig and elsewhere to mark next year's 20th anniversary of the wall's fall and the peaceful protests that led to it.

The construction of the Berlin Wall began on August 13, 1961.

It was a result of the cold war, when the communist government of Germany's eastern sector decided to construct a barrier to the arrest the advance of capitalism.

The city was torn in two, East and West.

Families were separated, lives turned upside down.

Sabine Sprengel was 17 years old when German soldiers started to set up

the wall.

On a sunny Sunday neighbors were ringing at her door saying that right beside her house soldiers are setting up barricades.

In 1962 when East German soldiers were setting up another border check point between East and West Berlin, Sabine Sprengel was got arrested while walking close to the new check point at Heinrich Heine Strasse in Berlin.

Accused of trying to leave East Germany she was sentenced to 4

months in prison.

After being released she applied to leave the country.

At the former no mans land at the Potsdamer Platz in the city centre of Berlin, Germany has built new modern offices and housing, but also elements of the past are visible.

Its now a magnet for tourists, who are keen to discover the last relics of German history.

Wolfgang Schulz was one of the hundreds of residents of East Germany who tried to escape, he was then aged 17.

Wolfgang Schulz it was very clear why he would like to leave East Germany.

He had heard of the good life, that eluded him just beyond the wall and wanted to wear blue jeans and listen pop music, things which were denied him by the communist government.

STORYLINE

Germany marked a subdued 15th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on Tuesday, weighed down by high unemployment in the formerly

communist east and a sense that in people's hearts the nation hasn't yet fully reunited.

No big celebrations, parades or fireworks were planned to commemorate November 9, 1989 - the day East Germany's communist regime opened the wall and set off national euphoria that peaked with German reunification 11 months later.

Official ceremonies planned on Tuesday include a trip by President Horst Koehler to the former east-west border.

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder issued a statement on Monday praising east Germans for overthrowing communist rule peacefully.

As time has passed, however, Germans have focused on the staggering cost of rebuilding the east, not the peaceful revolution that toppled the Wall and the Stalinist rulers who had built it 28 years before.

The east's jobless rate - 17.5 per cent - is more than twice as high as in the West. The disappointment shows in elections, when about one in five east Germans regularly votes for the successor party to the communists.

The east's economic problems - and up to 1.5 trillion euros (US$1.9 trillion) in government subsidies to the region - have fuelled resentment on both sides.

More than 1,000 East Germans were killed during the Cold War while trying to slip through the heavily fortified border to West Germany or trying to get out through other communist countries such as Poland or Hungary.

About 230 died at the Wall, a 155-kilometre (97-mile) reinforced concrete barrier that ran through the centre of the capital and around then-West

Berlin. Many were killed by East German soldiers following shoot-to-kill orders.

Though only very few pieces remain standing, the Wall and several museums dedicated to it remain tourist attractions.

To help keep memories of the Wall's victims alive, German lawmakers have proposed building a new, centrally located memorial at the Brandenburg Gate.

With blatant disregard for the uncommitted nations in the cold war, the Communists have timed their fabulous demonstration of leadership in space with the first anniversary of the Berlin Wall, stretching for 26 miles right across the city. For a year, the unending war of nerves has gone on. More than 12,000 people have defied the East German guards in their bid for freedom, in spite of the Wall. But more than 50 have been shot and many more captured, trying to get away.

Seventeen years on from the fall of the Berlin Wall, city officials and artists are locked in a battle to save one of the largest remaining sections of the historic monument from property developers, pollution, and vandalism.

The East Side Gallery, a three-quarter-mile stretch in Berlin's Friedrichshain neighbourhood, features the work of over a hundred international artists and includes iconic images like the embrace between East German leader Erich Honecker and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.

This popular tourist spot is in danger of disappearing altogether because of deteriorating walls, pollution, and tourists who like to pick-off pieces for souvenirs.

September's planned restoration is put at 1.8 (m) million US dollars, a figure that will increase depending on how much of the wall and its artwork can be saved.

Kani Alavi, heads up the East Side Gallery's Artists' association who fight to preserve the wall.

Alavi, an Iranian-born artist who contributed a mural in the 1990s says that politicians have to "act soon" to keep the Gallery "authentic".

"We have to act now and we have to use the finances we have received from several sources; the government, the city of Berlin, private sponsors and Lotto."

Another obstacle to restoration is property development planned for the area.

Manfred K�hne, a city official says: "We have to coordinate the construction of a park, the reconstruction of the wall and the repainting of the paintings at the wall. The reconstruction of the wall and the repainting is delayed because we had to move some old houses from the park area."

The wall's western side was covered in graffiti during the decades after the barrier was erected on Aug. 13, 1961. Parts of the eastern side, to which the East Side Gallery belongs, were painted only after communism collapsed.

Speaking at the event was Charles C. Clay, Grandson of Lucius E. Clay, the Military governor of American occupied zone of Berlin in 1947.

Together with Rainer Hildebrandt, manager of the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, Clay unveiled a fragment of the Berlin wall which will be sent to Washington.

Earlier on Monday, there was a memorial service for an estimated one thousand people who died trying to flee to the West - 250 of them were killed at the wall itself.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder opened a new exhibition outlining the history of the wall and said "We must learn from history so that such things aren't repeated, not in Germany and not anywhere in the world."

Schroeder also marked the anniversary by laying a wreath at a memorial on Bernauer Strasse, which ran along the wall.

The street gained symbolic importance in the months after the wall went up as people jumped from windows of apartments on the eastern side to the street, which lay in the West.

Eventually, the windows were boarded up, and the buildings torn down.

But Bernauer Strasse continued to be an escape point through tunnels dug secretly beneath it.

Germany marked the 46th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall on Monday- a remembrance given added poignancy by the emergence from the files of East Germany's dreaded secret police of an unusually explicit order to shoot at citizens fleeing the communist country.

Though the official East German border regulations said use of a firearm was to be considered an "extreme measure in the use of force," the October 1,1973 order to border guards from the Ministry for State Security, or Stasi, is much less reserved, Magdeburg's Volksstimme newspaper reported on Saturday.

"Do not hesitate with the use of a firearm, including when the border breakouts involve women and children, which the traitors have already frequently taken advantage of," the order reads.

Marianne Birthler, Head of the Stasi archives said the documents showed a willingness to commit brutality that have rarely been seen otherwise.

She spoke at a memorial service for those who lost their lives as they attempted East Germany after the barrier was erected on August 13, 1961.

"I know from victims of the GDR (German Democratic Republic) regime that they want to have a clear statement about what was just and unjust. They want people to hear their stories.They want to make clear who carries the political responsibility for this crime," Birthler said.

Before the 1990 reunification of Germany, more than one thousand people were killed on the eastern side of the highly fortified border as they tried to escape to the West, including more than 125 at the Berlin Wall.

Some politicians on Monday pointed out that the document had already been published years ago, and criticised the Stasi archives for taking advantage of the Berlin Wall anniversary to call attention to their cause and alleged they were using the documents to justify their work.

However, the German government representative for human rights, Guenter Nooke, applauded the release of the documents saying that is is good to bring the world's attention to the "disgusting" regime of the GDR.

"For most of the people it is not normal that the GDR gave orders to kill people, even women and children at the border. And I think it is a positive thing that people in Germany and the world hear this again or some of them for the first time," he added.

Richard Buchner, Member of the Association of the Victims of the Communist Regime said that the fact that these documents were around 17 years after the fall of the Wall was "incredible" and said that legal action was required.

"If possible, people who are responsible for it have to be impeached for it. This is the opinion I can represent in the name of two million (m) victims of the SED (East German Socialist Party) regime," he told the Associated Press.

Germany had been divided after the end of World War II in 1945 into communist East Germany and democratic West Germany.

The Stasi, founded in the 1950s, had 91,000 full-time employees and 180,000 undercover informers.

They kept the population of 18 (m) million under blanket surveillance while the regime built the Berlin Wall and a border bristling with mines, barbed wire, dogs and self-activating machine guns.

After the Soviet Union collapsed, the border came down, the Stasi was disbanded and East and West Germany were united in 1990.

WALL BABIES CELEBRATE 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF WALL'S FALL

Sixty German children born on November 9th, 1989 -- the day when the Berlin wall came down -- have gone to the city's Town Hall to mark the fifth anniversary of its fall. Hosted by the city's mayor, Eberhard Diepgen, the event was sponsored by the car manufacturer, Volkswagen-Audi; the car company which has adopted the role of "godfather" for each of the children. November 9th, 1989 was a landmark in German history, as Berliners from east and west came together to drink champagne, embrace and dance on the wall that divided their city for 28 years.

The anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall was marked for the first time on Monday with flags flying at half mast on the Reichstag parliament building 40 year after the infamous structure was built.

The first wreaths were laid on Monday morning by Angela Merkel, leader of the opposition C-D-U party, in advance of ceremonies later in the day including one by Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

Merkel and her colleagues then observed a minute's silence.

Some sources estimate that nearly 1,000 people died trying to flee to the west, including 250 of those at the wall itself.

German rulers closed the border between East and West Berlin on August 13, 1961, to stop the flood of people leaving the communist country.

To try and preserve the wall's history, the Berlin city government said on Sunday it would pass a resolution this week declaring the few remaining sections of the former barrier as protected memorials.

Egon Krenz, East Germany's last Stalinist leader who allowed the historic opening of the Berlin Wall during a brief seven weeks in power, was released from jail on Thursday after serving nearly four years for the shooting deaths of East Germans trying to flee to the West during the Cold War.

An unsmiling Krenz, 66, emerged from the Ploetzensee Prison - where he has been serving a six-and-a-half year sentence on a manslaughter conviction - to a media crush but no protests at the early release of the highest former East German official convicted of crimes by the regime.

Although the last Wall death occurred months before Krenz took power, he was held partly responsible for border deaths because, as a longtime member of the communist Politburo, he condoned the shoot-to-kill orders.

Krenz has long maintained his innocence, arguing all the way to the European Court of Human Rights that stopping citizens from fleeing the communist country broke no East German law. His arguments were rejected in 2001.

"Contrary to what has been said, I have always said it was a personal defeat for me that we were not in a position to prevent deaths and injuries at the border," Krenz said as he left prison, clutching a black overnight bag.

He added that "those were the circumstances of the Cold War. I have always expressed my sympathy and regret to relatives of the victims on this question. But I didn't need a trial for that. I didn't need four years."

About one-thousand people were killed trying to cross the Berlin Wall and other heavily fortified stretches of Germany's east-west border between 1961 and the 1989 fall of the Wall. The last person killed was 20-year-old Chris Gueffroy, who was shot in February 1989 as tried to reach West Berlin.

Hundreds of former East German border guards and officials have been convicted since German reunification in 1990 for shootings along the former border. Most received suspended sentences.

Krenz's sentence allowed him to leave jail to work during the day as an economic adviser at a German start-up airline, but he had to return to his cell every night. He was paroled because he had served nearly two-thirds of his sentence, as allowed under German law, and has behaved well in prison, according to Berlin justice spokeswoman Annette Grabbe.

Krenz said he intended to return to a home in the town of Ribnitz-Damgarten on the Baltic coast near Rostock, where he would spend Christmas with his family and begin work on his memoirs.

Under the communist regime, Krenz served in a succession of senior posts from 1973 until shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989.

He served for only 49 days as East Germany's leader after replacing the long-serving Erich Honecker, who was ousted amid mounting demonstrations demanding reforms and freedom to travel.

Krenz's hardline Politburo was replaced in December 1989 by a reform-oriented caretaker government led by Hans Modrow, a moderate communist, which paved the way for the country's first democratic elections in March 1990.

For the first time since its erection, the Berlin Wall is opened for border crossings for the Christmas period. Many have queued for passes to make visits. A record number of West Berliners crossed the wall to visit friends and relatives during the holidays. The relaxing of border rules is termed Passierscheinregelung. The negotiators for the permit agreements were Horst Korber from West Berlin and the East German State Secretary, Erich Wendt who signed on 17 December 1963, a pass protocol, for the first permit agreement.

POST-WALL BERLIN IS FAR FROM UTOPIA

Berlin, a city with two centres but no heart, is drifting through the mid-1990s in search of its identity. The German government is due to move from Bonn to Berlin by the year 2000. But Berlin's 3.4 million citizens fear that parliamentarians, who still grieve over the 1991 vote to move the seat of government from Bonn, will delay or derail the move. Federal subsidies for Berlin dried up after the Berlin Wall came down five years ago. Since 1989, Berlin's debt has soard to 7.5 billion marks ($4.4 billion) a year to pay for its own mini-reunification. This has triggered draconian cuts in city services. At the same time, huge construction projects are causing enormous traffic jams. A frightening increase in crime also has marred the reputation of Berlin, which forever is fretting about what the world thinks of it. The ostensible differences between east and west Berliners, such as wages, are narrowing. But less tangible gaps, like preferences, seem to be widening further. "The concrete Wall is gone, but the Wall in our minds and our habits is certainly there," said Peter Jakob, a spokesman for the Berlin city government.

This was the scene at night on the East-West Berlin frontier, East Germans building up and strengthening the notorious prison wall, designed to keep the people in. And next morning, where the wall curves in a semi-circle in front of the Brandenburg Gate, work was still going on. In West Berlin, about 20,000 people, mostly youngsters and students, marched in a torchlight procession through the streets to protest against the prison wall.

STORYLINE:

An accurate replica of Jerusalem's Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, is under construction in the German capital as part of a new 6 (m) million US dollar Jewish Community Centre.

The 100-square-metre replica will be part of Szloma Albam House, which is set to open on 2 September.

The project began when a team from the Chabad-Lubavitch organisation travelled to Jerusalem to photograph a section of the Western Wall, famous for the tradition of inserting tiny prayers on paper into its many cracks.

Almost 19 tons of "Jerusalem Gold" sandstone quarried in the region arrived in Berlin on 11 July and have since been chiselled and installed to match the photographs.

The complete replica, located in the centre's entrance, will also include identical plants sprouting from the cracks.

The Western Wall replica is not meant to be used for worship, but as a symbol and reminder of the centre's mission.

"The Western wall is the Western wall, people go there to pray. When people see this they remind themselves and they get inspired," the centre's executive director, Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal, told AP Television on Wednesday.

He said the centre was a symbolic part of making Berlin a central hub of Jewish life again.

"We believe that in the centre of Germany which was once the essence of evil and darkness, we will bring light, we have to set a positive example that here we will once again rebuild, re-establish and renew Jewish life and spirit," Teichtal said.

The Szloma Albam House, located on Muenstersche Strasse in Berlin's Charlottenburg neighbourhood, has been under construction for three years.

Though opening officially on 2 September, its synagogue is already open for worship and classes are being held amid construction noise.

More than 30 rabbis from around the world and high-ranking German officials will attend the opening.

Teichtal, a native of Brooklyn, New York, whose grandfather's family was killed in the Holocaust, stressed that the centre was meant for everyone, including non-Jews.

Along with a synagogue, Szloma Albam House will have a kosher restaurant, a tourist welcome centre, a library and media centre, conference

centre, seminary, youth lounge, shop, and a top-of-the-line mikvah, or ritual bath.

Ninety percent of the centre's funding was raised within Berlin's Jewish community.

The Jewish community in Germany is the fastest growing in the world, according to the World Jewish Congress, fed by immigrants from the former

Soviet Union.

The Central Council of Jews in Germany says the Jewish community has some 110-thousand registered members.

Some 560-thousand Jews lived in Germany before the Holocaust.

Berlin, with 12-thousand Jews and eight synagogues, has the largest Jewish community in Germany.

One of the Szloma Albam House's primary functions, Teichtal says, is to help these Jewish immigrants integrate into German society.

All services and classes will be taught in German.
