An exhibition showcasing immersive art from the 1960s has opened in the German capital Berlin.

The rooms in the Martin-Gropius Bau museum are filled with flashing lights, red tunnels, smells and even a Japanese teahouse - all to create an immersive experience for the visitor.

STORYLINE

This is an art exhibition like no other.

Instead of oil paintings on a wall there are tunnels illuminated with neon light.

Instead of bronze statues there are entirely white rooms complete with a neon light panel, creating the sense of being in a haze.

And if you sit down on the benches, they will start moving.

The exhibition is called "Welt Ohne Außen" - it can be translated as "A World Without an Outside."

The exhibition - held at the Martin-Gropius Bau museum in the German capital Berlin - shows "Immersive Art" from the 1960's.

The whole idea is to immerse the visitor in a new experience.

One area of performances, experiences and workshops is curated by Isabel Lewis, an Dominican Republic-American artist that currently lives in Berlin.

She has set up one room as a Japanese Teahouse.

Visitors can simply sit down, relax and have different teas served to them by a tea expert.

In the background music is playing, the walls are decorated with Japanese art.

"For me, this aspect, this part of the exhibition is about engagement and embodiment and activation of the senses," says Lewis.

"So the first place to do that is exactly here in the tea room where your sense of smell is adressed, your sense of taste is addressed, there is a haptic feeling to the table. It is very special. So all of those aspects of the room adress the multiple senses."

The exhibition has 12 rooms with art ranging from the early 1960s until today.

Curator Annika Kuhlmann says it can be seen as a maze of experience rather than a traditional exhibition.

"Basically we are merging two formats. We are taking the very traditional format of the exhibition that presents artworks in distinct spaces between white walls, thereby turning an objet in to an artwork, and we are now taking that and we are introducing situations in to it," she says.

"And these situations kind of align next to another, together forming an experience. An experience that will be new and unexpected in this kind of space and environment."

In one room large mirrors and windows have been set up to create a small maze.

The artwork, called "6 x 8: An Improvisation" by American artist Larry Bell, creates an outer-bodily sense.

Artistic director Thohmas Oberender says the exhibition is trying to rewrite the rules of what museum visits are like.

"If we were to compare the exhibition to a football game. Then we can say that a football game is pretty much always the same," he says.

"What makes a difference is that are different players. But the rules are always the same. What the exhibition "World Without Outside" does is that it changes the rules. And some players are the same, but many are entirely new."

While most of the works immerse the visitor in a pleasant feeling the room with the artwork "Light Wall" by Stockholm-based Carsten Hoeller, can create a sense of nausea.

One of the walls has been covered with 1920 lightbulbs that are flashing to the beat of a loud signal.

It is extremely disorienting.

However, curator Tino Sehgal, says the exhibition should just not be seen as an experience, but also as a showcase of immersive art since the 1960s.

"Immersion is not something new kind of notion, it is what artists have been busy with since the 60s," he says.

The exhibition Welt Ohne Außen opens to the public on June 8 and runs through August 5.

Royal excitement is building in Berlin as Britain's Prince William and Princess Catherine, with their children George and Charlotte, are set to arrive on Wednesday (19 July).

Children at a social centre in the east of the capital are busy with a special British tradition: making Union Jack bunting to make the Royals feel welcome.

STORYLINE

The children at the "Youth house Bolle," a social centre for children from disadvantaged backgrounds in the east of Berlin, are working hard.

They are printing Union Jack flags and hanging them on strings to make bunting - a very British way to get ready for a party.

Germany does not have its own royal household, but on Wednesday Price William and Princess Catherine - also known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - will visit the centre on their first day in the German capital.

They might even bring their children George and Charlotte with them.

The children at Bolle House have been learning about the United Kingdom to prepare for the visit.

Ten-year-old Dean Vorpahl lets everyone know that he knows the colours of the Union Jack flag.

"We make bands with English flags. We have also bands around our wrists with the English colors: white, red and blue," he says.

Around 100 children, from young school children to teenagers, visit the centre each week.

The district is one of the poorest in the German capital, and most of the children in the centre come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

At the centre they get healthy food, can do their homework and of course play.

But on Wednesday there will be no homework, the children are going to show their flags and enjoy the commotion that comes with a celebrity visit.

"On Wednesday Prince William will come with his Duchess Kate to the youth Club Bolle," says Vorpahl.

"There are going to be a lot of police here. And lots of people doing interviews with cameras."

The children have watched videos from the Royal wedding in 2011.

They have also tried to learn a bit of English.

"Many of them are really excited. It is something big when a real prince comes. It is really great," says Stefanie Milios who works at the centre.

Youth house Bolle was founded in 2010 and is a part of an organisation called "Strassenkinder" which translates to "street children."

It is a place for the children to spend their afternoons after school before returning to their homes.

Youth house Bolle runs on donations, and a royal visit can help with fundraising, says Eckhard Baumann who founded the centre.

"First of all, we are thinking that maybe the children will be motivated to learn a bit of English. If they get to know this country a bit and learn a bit of English then it would be a success," he says

"But of course it would also be really great if the public would notice us a bit."

The Royal Family will arrive in Berlin on Wednesday morning.

Prince William will start the day by holding talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Then the Duke and Duchess will visit the Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe, also known as the Holocaust memorial, in the centre of the capital.

The memorial was built in 2004 and consists of 2711 individual concrete slabs arranged in rows.

The memorial commemorates the millions of Jewish people that were murdered by the National Socialist regime of Adolf Hitler before and during the Second World War.

There are other memorials for other targeted groups in the city, but this one is fully focused on the murdered Jews.

Architect Peter Eisenmann designed the memorial to be open, and without information texts and pictures.

"It is a space for free associations," says Adam Kerpel-Fronius, project leader for 'European sites of remembrance'

"That means that you enter the memorial and you can let the memorial make an impression on you."

The memorial is one of most visited tourist sites in Berlin.

The ground is slanted, so when the visitors reach the centre of the memorial, the surrounding world slowly disappears.

"Many people feel lost in the memorial," says Kerpel-Fronius

"They feel like they can't find a way out. Other people think that because the rows are relatively straight, and you can always see the exits and that life continues outside with the noise of the city, they start thinking about how they are her in 2017 and about what the Holocaust has to do with us now."

The Royal family will also visit Brandenburg Gate on Wednesday.

The 18th-century neoclassical gate is one of the best know landmarks in Germany.

Here Prince William and Princess Catherine will "greet the crowds that will have gathered at the gate," according to a press release by Clarence House.

The royal trip started on July 17 in Poland where the family visited Warsaw, the former Nazi concentration camp Stutthof, and Gdansk.

After the visit to Berlin, the Royal family will visit the German cities of Heidelberg and Hamburg before returning to London on July 21.

LEAD IN

A group of volunteers in Germany gather twice a week to repair bikes which have been donated for refugees.

Over 800 bikes have been restored so far in a project designed to foster ties between locals and migrants.

STORY-LINE:

A cyclist rides into garage number 10 in a refugee shelter on the outskirts of Berlin.

But this garage is special - because every Wednesday and Sunday volunteers gather here to help fix the bikes of refugees.

Surrounded by tools and spare parts, they get to work.

Bernd Pickert is a journalist by trade and began the Garage10 project in August 2015 when the refugee shelter in Berlin's Karlshorst neighbourhood first opened.

That year, over 1.1 million migrants entered Germany, according to the German Interior Ministry.

Within a few days of the Karlshorst housing unit opening, over 1,000 people - mostly from Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria - had moved in.

Pickert says that many of his neighbours were eager to help, but couldn't think of much more to do besides donating used clothing.

"I thought maybe I could do something that was different than just bringing old clothes. And then I realised that we're pretty far away from the action," Pickert says.

"It's about two kilometres to the train station. I thought if the people here had bikes, that would be good," he says.

While many neighbours had old bikes to donate, they didn't think it was a good idea because the bikes were often in need of repair.

So Pickert approached the Red Cross with his idea, was given garage space number 10 within the grounds of the refugee shelter and put a post on Facebook telling people to come by with their broken bikes.

Since the project began, Pickert estimates that over 800 bikes have been repaired and handed over to refugees.

While at the start the donations mainly came from neighbours, Pickert was also approached by construction companies as the project became more well known in Berlin.

Such companies often collected abandoned bikes in yards and basements.

The first time Pickert went to collect bikes from the construction companies, the Red Cross gave him two trucks and he managed to load them up with 60 bikes at once.

While bike repair is an important element of the project, Pickert maintains that the main goal of Garage10 is to foster connections between refugees and volunteers.

Residents at the shelter mingle and work alongside volunteers, putting aside their native Arabic, Farsi, Urdu and Pashto languages for a few hours to practice their German, while also learning the technical aspects of bicycle repair.

Emin Alku, a Turkish refugee, has been helping out at Garage10 since he moved into the shelter five months ago.

"For me the workshop is great," he says. "The people who sometimes come here are speaking Turkish, Arabic, a little German. I like helping them."

Pickert insists that the bikes are a means to fulfil a purpose: encouraging volunteers to get to know each other and work on something together.

"This is what it's all about," he says. "To establish connections between German neighbours and refugees. Especially to establish connections between normal people. We're neither police nor officials nor security, we're neighbours. And that's what it's about. That's the main goal."
