PITT AND JOLIE THANK NAMIBIA FOR PEACEFUL BIRTH

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have thanked the people of Namibia for the "peaceful birth" of their daughter and said they hoped to return to the country.

AP Television News has acquired the worldwide rights to the exclusive first television interview, conducted by Nambian Broadcasting Corporation in the coastal town of Swakopmund.

The couple arrived at the interview smiling and looking relaxed and happy.

Angelina explained why they chose Namibia as the birth place for their new daughter:

"Well I had been here years before on a film and loved the country and loved the people here. And when we found out we were pregnant and thinking abut where we would want to go we thought we wanted to find a place that was...a beautiful place that our other children would enjoy. And we knew that this had so many wonderful sights and also the things to do here for them things that we wanted to show them, and places we wanted to spend time with them. "

Angelina Jolie is a frequent visitor to Africa and serves as goodwill ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

She said she will mark Refugee Day on 20 June, and described refugees as "the strongest people I have ever met."

"I usually am in Washington and depending on where we can be now because of travel restrictions and the new baby but I may be able to make it to Washington, if not I'll be delivering a statement from Los Angeles. But just a statement of hope and hope that people stay focussed on all the refugees in the world and hope that they continue to give them to aid and support that they need."

She went on to describe the ways in which she and Brad have given their thanks to the Namibian community in return for the hospitability and warmth that the community has shown them:

Brad Pitt expressed how much the couple had appreciated the warmth of the Namibian people during their time there, describing how their experience had impacted on the birth of their baby Shiloh Nouvel:

Jolie and Pitt had powerful help protecting their privacy from the government of Namibia, which refused to grant entry to reporters seeking to cover the birth without the actors' written permission.

The government arrested photographers, confiscated film, ringed the couple's hotel with heavy security and set up large green barriers on the beach to shield their family.

Todays interview was the couple's second public appearance since Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt was born May 27 at a private clinic in Walvis Bay.

Delivered by Caesarean section, the baby weighed 7 pounds (3.15 kilogrammes) and was said to be in good health.

The couple had sought a place where they could spend some special time with her two adopted children, 16-month-old Zahara, from Ethiopia, and four-year-old Maddox, from Cambodia.

Jolie has two adopted children: toddler Zahara, from Ethiopia, and four-year-old Maddox, from Cambodia. Both had their surnames legally changed to Jolie-Pitt after Pitt announced his intentions to co-adopt the children.

Pitt, 42, and Jolie, 31, were first linked romantically after appearing together in the 2005 movie "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."

BRAD PITT MAKES FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE SINCE LEAVING HOSPITAL

Actor Brad Pitt marked his first public appearance Wednesday (20 July 2005), following his 13 July release from a Los Angeles hospital after being diagnosed with a mild case of viral meningitis.

Looking happy and healthy, Pitt reportedly arrived at the Beverly Hills Hotel on a motorcycle. The actor was there to accept a charitable donation from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the group that produces the annual Golden Globe Awards.

The HFPA presented Pitt with a $250,000US cheque, who accepted on behalf of director Martin Scorsese's The Film Foundation, which focuses on film restoration.

Pitt, in jeans and a white jacket, and whose hair is still dyed blond, skipped the arrivals line and did not speak with media, though he did make a brief speech upon accepting the cheque.

Among the other stars accepting the HFPA's contributions were actors Sally Field, Peter Falk, Emmy Rossum, Kevin Bacon, Jesse Bradford, America Ferrera and Ziyi Zhang.

Zhang accepted money on behalf of FilmAid International, which brings filmed entertainment and education to Sudanese and other refugees in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in northwestern Kenya.

Zhang also spoke with AP Television News about her new film, the long-awaited "Memoirs of a Geisha," (from director Rob Marshall) in theatres at year's end.

All tolled, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association donated more than $1,000,000 in financial grants to film schools and non-profit organisation. Over the past 11 years, the HFPA has given more than $5,500,000 in financial grants.

UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie teared up as she spoke at a World Refugee Day event in Washington, D.C.

"Refugees are not numbers.They're not even just refugees. They are mothers, and daughters and fathers and sons. They are farmers, teachers, doctors, engineers. They're individuals, all. And most of all, they are survivors," she said telling stories of her personal experiences.

"The threat of climate change, the competition for resources, and ever growing global inequality have created deepening intractable conflicts. Whether it be Darfur, Myanmar or the Swat Valley or some as yet unknown crisis. Mass migrations will be a feature of our future. And we must adjust to this looming reality," Jolie said.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have donated $1 million to the U.N. refugee agency providing aid to hundreds of thousands uprooted by violence in Pakistan.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says it is grateful for the donation from the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. It said Thursday the money will go to alleviating suffering caused by the "most challenging humanitarian crisis of the past decade."

UNHCR says over 2 million Pakistanis have been driven from their homes this year by fighting between government troops and Taliban militants in the northwest of the country.

Jolie has visited refugees in Pakistan on three missions since becoming goodwill ambassador for the agency in 2001. The Oscar-winning actress took Pitt with her on one such visit in 2005.
