Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have thanked the people of Namibia for the "peaceful birth" of their daughter and said they hoped to return to the country.

AP Television News has acquired the worldwide rights to the exclusive first television interview, conducted by Nambian Broadcasting Corporation in the coastal town of Swakopmund.

The couple arrived at the interview smiling and looking relaxed and happy.

Angelina explained why they chose Namibia as the birth place for their new daughter:

"Well I had been here years before on a film and loved the country and loved the people here. And when we found out we were pregnant and thinking abut where we would want to go we thought we wanted to find a place that was...a beautiful place that our other children would enjoy. And we knew that this had so many wonderful sights and also the things to do here for them things that we wanted to show them, and places we wanted to spend time with them. "

Angelina Jolie is a frequent visitor to Africa and serves as goodwill ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

She said she will mark Refugee Day on 20 June, and described refugees as "the strongest people I have ever met."

"I usually am in Washington and depending on where we can be now because of travel restrictions and the new baby but I may be able to make it to Washington, if not I'll be delivering a statement from Los Angeles. But just a statement of hope and hope that people stay focussed on all the refugees in the world and hope that they continue to give them to aid and support that they need."

She went on to describe the ways in which she and Brad have given their thanks to the Namibian community in return for the hospitability and warmth that the community has shown them:

Brad Pitt expressed how much the couple had appreciated the warmth of the Namibian people during their time there, describing how their experience had impacted on the birth of their baby Shiloh Nouvel:

Jolie and Pitt had powerful help protecting their privacy from the government of Namibia, which refused to grant entry to reporters seeking to cover the birth without the actors' written permission.

The government arrested photographers, confiscated film, ringed the couple's hotel with heavy security and set up large green barriers on the beach to shield their family.

Todays interview was the couple's second public appearance since Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt was born May 27 at a private clinic in Walvis Bay.

Delivered by Caesarean section, the baby weighed 7 pounds (3.15 kilogrammes) and was said to be in good health.

The couple had sought a place where they could spend some special time with her two adopted children, 16-month-old Zahara, from Ethiopia, and four-year-old Maddox, from Cambodia.

Jolie has two adopted children: toddler Zahara, from Ethiopia, and four-year-old Maddox, from Cambodia. Both had their surnames legally changed to Jolie-Pitt after Pitt announced his intentions to co-adopt the children.

Pitt, 42, and Jolie, 31, were first linked romantically after appearing together in the 2005 movie "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."

ANGELINA JOLIE TALKS ABOUT HER RECENT VISIT TO IRAQ

Angelina Jolie hit the red carpet with partner Brad Pitt at the Toronto Film Festival last night.

When questioned she told reporters about her recent trip to Iraq as goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, (UNHCR) at the beginning of the month.

The actress told AP she would personally report her experiences in Washington DC soon:

"I learned quite a lot and I'll be following up with policymakers in Washington to express what I've learned, and hope that in some way the can shed some light on the refugee situation, because that was my focus when I was there and it is a huge problem, and it's 4 million people displaced now and something we absolutely have to address," she said.

But the actress admitted to being somewhat astounded by what she saw in Iraq and said she hasn't yet managed to process it all.

"I didn't intentionally not talk about it, but I just feel like I don't have the right words to put together that situation, I'm still trying to understand so much in my head, I'm speaking to experts and I'm trying to learn more so that I can better learn the situation but I will be speaking in Washington privately about my experiences and what I witnessed," Jolie said, before gushing about her partner Brad Pitt's Best Actor win at the Venice Film festival.

"I'm very proud of him," Jolie told AP.

Angelina Jolie and partner Brad Pitt were in town for the premiere of 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.'

Jolie witnessed firsthand the plight of war refugees stranded in the blazing desert near the Syrian-Iraqi border and some of those now in Damascus, during a visit earlier this month to highlight their ordeal.

The 32-year-old star also travelled to the al-Waleed refugee camp on the Iraqi side of the border, and spoke to some of the Palestinian refugees stranded there since December, blocked from entering Syria.

The actress also visited US troops in Iraq.

STORYLINE

A US government donation will provide housing for the last 15 people living in a Bosnian refugee camp that movie stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt drew attention to by visiting.

The mayor of the eastern Bosnian town of Rogatica, said on Monday the nearly 500,000 US dollar donation will be used for the construction of an apartment building for the refugees who could move in by September.

The mayor said he had lobbied for donations for the refugees for years but the Jolie and Pitt visit to the camp in April was the turning point leading to last week's US donation agreement.

Jolie, a UNHCR (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees/ UN Refugee Agency) Goodwill Ambassador, has visited some of the projects of the agency, which helps the 117,000 refugees who were left homeless by fighting that ended in Bosnia 15 years ago.

"I will tattoo her name here," said camp resident Goran Markovic, 47, pointing to one of his arms.

Jolie's name is not mentioned in the contract for the new apartment building in Rogatica, 30 miles (50 kilometres) northeast of Sarajevo, but the town's officials and refugees are convinced her visit made the difference.

Two refugees - sisters Lena Babic, 78, and Mara Babic, 72 - fondly remember entertaining Jolie and Pitt on Easter Sunday when they visited them in their small room in the former school that serves as the refugee camp in Rogatica.

But both women only found out later that they were famous actors.

Their neighbour, 68-year-old Borka Mandzo, said she feels indebted to Jolie, and refugee Persa Radovic, 72, said she cried when she heard about the US donation for a new apartment building.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have donated $1 million to the U.N. refugee agency providing aid to hundreds of thousands uprooted by violence in Pakistan.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says it is grateful for the donation from the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. It said Thursday the money will go to alleviating suffering caused by the "most challenging humanitarian crisis of the past decade."

UNHCR says over 2 million Pakistanis have been driven from their homes this year by fighting between government troops and Taliban militants in the northwest of the country.

Jolie has visited refugees in Pakistan on three missions since becoming goodwill ambassador for the agency in 2001. The Oscar-winning actress took Pitt with her on one such visit in 2005.

NEW REFUGEE DWELLING "VILLA ANGELINA" OPENS IN BOSNIAN TOWN

A small building in Bosnia's eastern town of Rogatica opened Thursday (3 Nov), but it is already well known around the country as "Villa Angelina."

The building was named after Angelina Jolie.

It is to serve as a home to some of the people who remain refugees more than 15 years after the end of the country's 1992-95 war.

The building took a record 9 months to build after the local authorities in Rogatica received half a million dollar donation from the US government.

The donation was approved a few months after the visit to the camp by Jolie and her equally famous partner Brad Pitt.

The refugees who got the keys Thursday for the fully furnished apartments say they recognize that the building was funded by the US government and, in part, by local authorities.

However, although Jolie's name was not mentioned in the donation contract, the new residents of "Villa Angelina" are convinced that her visit had made it possible.

"She saw everything?she said, 'If I can do anything, you will have your own bathroom,'" one of the refugees, 79-year-old Lena Babic said.

Babic decided that the first possession she will bring into her new apartment should be a photo of her and her sister Mara with Jolie.

"Angelina is in my heart and I brought this photo with me for everyone who came here today to see it," she said.

Before moving into the new building, refugees lived a run-down building in Rogatica that served as a refugee camp.

There, each of them had only one small room to live in and one cold bathroom they all shared.

Angelina Jolie was not present at the opening.

STORYLINE

Taking a break from shooting a movie in India, Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie met with India's junior minister of External Affairs Anand Sharma in New Delhi on Sunday.

This was Jolie's first official engagement in the country where she has been shooting for a movie about the life of slain journalist Daniel Pearl .

Accompanied by UN officials, Jolie who is also a goodwill ambassador for the UNHCR - the United Nations' refugee agency - lauded India's efforts to help refugees from across the world.

With her 5-year-old son Maddox in tow, she toured an Afghan Sikh refugee camp in New Delhi on Saturday, listening to children play religious music and chatting with students, a UNHCR statement said.

Some 9,500 Afghan Sikh refugees are in India. They fled Afghanistan after the Taliban seized power in 1996 and targeted non-Muslims.

She also visited refugees from Myanmar (Burma).

Myanmar-India relations turned cold after the Myanmar military violently suppressed pro-democracy demonstrations in 1988, but relations have warmed in the past few years.

"The wonderful thing that I have learned since I have been in India is there are many, many needs for your own people and yet you have all been so gracious and been so open to so many refugees over the years," Jolie said in her first interaction with reporters since she arrived in India last month.

Jolie is scheduled to return to the western Indian city of Pune to resume shooting this week for the film, "A Mighty Heart," in which she plays Mariane Pearl, with Dan Futterman portrays Daniel Pearl.

A bungalow and adjoining cottages replicate the area where Pearl and his wife stayed in Karachi before his abduction.

The Wall Street Journal reporter was abducted and murdered in Pakistan in 2002 while researching a story on Islamic militancy.

Pune is about 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment hub.

The movie is based on an adaptation of Mariane Pearl's book, "A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl," and is co-produced by Plan B, a production company founded by Brad Pitt and his ex-wife, actress Jennifer Aniston.
