STORYLINE

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Goodwill Ambassador and actor Angelina Jolie teared up as she spoke at a World Refugee Day event in Washington, D.C.

"Refugees are not numbers.They're not even just refugees. They are mothers, and daughters and fathers and sons," she said.

Jolie and husband Brad Pitt have donated one (m) million US dollars to the UN refugee agency providing aid to hundreds of thousands uprooted by violence in Pakistan.

UNHCR says over 2 (m) million Pakistanis have been driven from their homes this year by fighting between government troops and Taliban militants in the northwest of the country.

Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said refugees were "victims of terror. And they need to be protected."

Jolie has visited refugees and internally displaced people in Pakistan on three missions since becoming goodwill ambassador for the agency in 2001.

The Oscar-winning actress took Pitt with her on one such visit in 2005.

She also commented on climate change: "The threat of climate change, the competition for resources, and ever growing global inequality have created deepening intractable conflicts."

Also at Thursday's event, the UNHCR awarded a refugee from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Rose Mapendo, who had started her own NGO for victims of conflict, with its US Humanitarian of the Year Award.

In 1998, four years after the Rwandan genocide claimed the lives of nearly one (m) million ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus, the Rwandan Tutsi army invaded the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), triggering another wave of violence against Congolese Tutsis.

According to the UNHCR, Mapendo and her husband, both Tutsis, were living with their seven children in the eastern DRC when the campaign against Tutsis began.

"At that time, I was really angry. And it became to the point was the end of my life," said Mapendo.

She went through a terrifying ordeal and flight before being offered a new home in the United States, where she has become an inspiring advocate of peace and support for refugees.
