Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have donated $1 million to the U.N. refugee agency providing aid to hundreds of thousands uprooted by violence in Pakistan.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says it is grateful for the donation from the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. It said Thursday the money will go to alleviating suffering caused by the "most challenging humanitarian crisis of the past decade."

UNHCR says over 2 million Pakistanis have been driven from their homes this year by fighting between government troops and Taliban militants in the northwest of the country.

Jolie has visited refugees in Pakistan on three missions since becoming goodwill ambassador for the agency in 2001. The Oscar-winning actress took Pitt with her on one such visit in 2005.

Also at Thursday's event, the UNHCR awarded a refugee from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Rose Mapendo, who had started her own NGO for victims of conflict, with its US Humanitarian of the Year Award.

In 1998, four years after the Rwandan genocide claimed the lives of nearly one (m) million ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus, the Rwandan Tutsi army invaded the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), triggering another wave of violence against Congolese Tutsis.

According to the UNHCR, Mapendo and her husband, both Tutsis, were living with their seven children in the eastern DRC when the campaign against Tutsis began.

"At that time, I was really angry. And it became to the point was the end of my life," said Mapendo.

She went through a terrifying ordeal and flight before being offered a new home in the United States, where she has become an inspiring advocate of peace and support for refugees.

STORYLINE

A US government donation will provide housing for the last 15 people living in a Bosnian refugee camp that movie stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt drew attention to by visiting.

The mayor of the eastern Bosnian town of Rogatica, said on Monday the nearly 500,000 US dollar donation will be used for the construction of an apartment building for the refugees who could move in by September.

The mayor said he had lobbied for donations for the refugees for years but the Jolie and Pitt visit to the camp in April was the turning point leading to last week's US donation agreement.

Jolie, a UNHCR (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees/ UN Refugee Agency) Goodwill Ambassador, has visited some of the projects of the agency, which helps the 117,000 refugees who were left homeless by fighting that ended in Bosnia 15 years ago.

"I will tattoo her name here," said camp resident Goran Markovic, 47, pointing to one of his arms.

Jolie's name is not mentioned in the contract for the new apartment building in Rogatica, 30 miles (50 kilometres) northeast of Sarajevo, but the town's officials and refugees are convinced her visit made the difference.

Two refugees - sisters Lena Babic, 78, and Mara Babic, 72 - fondly remember entertaining Jolie and Pitt on Easter Sunday when they visited them in their small room in the former school that serves as the refugee camp in Rogatica.

But both women only found out later that they were famous actors.

Their neighbour, 68-year-old Borka Mandzo, said she feels indebted to Jolie, and refugee Persa Radovic, 72, said she cried when she heard about the US donation for a new apartment building.

STORYLINE:

American actor Matt Damon visited refugee centres in Musina in South Africa, just across the border with Zimbabwe, on Tuesday as part of his work with the human rights organisation he started with a number of other celebrities.

An emotional Damon listened to a Zimbabwean woman describe how she was raped while pregnant after a perilous journey across the border into South Africa.

Musina is battling to cope with an influx of Zimbabweans fleeing the economic collapse and dire humanitarian conditions in their country.

An estimated three (m) million Zimbabweans live in South Africa with as many as six-thousand crossing the border daily, according to some estimates.

Damon founded the human rights organisation Not On Our Watch with other celebrities including fellow American actors Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

The organisation has drawn attention to the crisis in Darfur and assisted with humanitarian aid in Haiti and Myanmar.

Damon is hoping to use his celebrity profile to raise awareness about Zimbabwe, while he is in South Africa making a film directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela, the country's anti-apartheid hero who became the first black president.

"I have spoken to so many people who went through so much to get to this point," Damon said.

Many Zimbabweans making the perilous journey across the border are forced to cross the crocodile-infested Limpopo River and enter through holes in the poorly patrolled border fence, often paying exorbitant fees to unscrupulous guides.

Aid agencies are concerned about an increase in the number of unaccompanied children making the crossing and incidents of sexual violence against women.

The Uniting Reform Church, where a number of woman have found shelter, is one of the local organisations offering assistance to Zimbabweans that Damon visited.

The Hollywood actor also spent some time at the Musina Showgrounds where United Nations and South African government officials have set up a reception centre to process asylum seekers.

About five-thousand Zimbabweans are camped out in the sandy patch of land, strewn with rubbish and personal belongings.

Some have erected makeshift structures out of plastic, while others sleep on pieces of cardboard. There are about a dozen toilets and only a few taps.

UN officials say numbers of asylum seekers are increasing and that 250 applications are processed everyday.

Damon, who patiently listened to heart-wrenching stories in the scorching heat, said the situation in Musina "desperately needs addressing," and called on international and regional leaders to take action.

A new unity government in Zimbabwe is hoping for about two (b) billion US dollars in aid to help rebuild the country.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, who has ruled since independence from Britain in 1980, formed a coalition government two weeks ago with longtime rival Morgan Tsvangirai after months of political deadlock kept leaders from addressing the world's highest inflation rate, a widespread hunger crisis and a cholera epidemic that has made more than 80-thousand people ill, and killed more than 3,800 since August.
