The Atlanta Braves new suburban stadium already has a name _ SunTrust Park.

The team announced the naming-rights deal at a ceremony Tuesday to officially break ground on the 41,500-seat stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2017.

The festivities _ including Major League Baseball's next commissioner, Rob Manfred, and Hall of Famer Hank Aaron _ took place in a tent situated in the middle of the massive construction zone.

Crews have been clearing the 60-acre site, even though the team is still finalizing designs of the hurried project.

Details of the 25-year sponsorship deal with SunTrust, the state's largest bank, were not released. Braves Chairman Terry McGuirk said naming rights already were factored into the projected $622 million cost of the stadium.

The Braves have touted the stadium as not only a new place to play baseball, but a chance to fully integrate a mixed-used development that will give fans other activities to do before and after the game.

That $1.2 billion facility is also scheduled to open in 2017.

Taiwanese pitcher Chien-Ming Wang is at the Atlanta Braves spring training camp in Kissimmee, Florida hoping to make the 25 man team roster after signing a minor league contract with the club in November, 2014.

Former Cy-Young runner up Chien-Ming Wang is at the Atlanta Braves spring training camp this week hoping to land a spot on the rotation and a glimpse at his former greatness.

The 35, the Taiwanese right hander is hardly the only new, veteran face at the Braves camp.

A.J. Pierzynski Jonny Gomes and Nick Markakis - who is out with injury and expected to miss much of spring training - are just some of the big ticket signings the Braves made in a frantic off season.

Coach Fredi Gonzalez said that winning, veteran presence would be infectious in the Atlanta clubhouse.

When asked about the 35 year old Wang, Gonzalez admitted he hadn't seen much of him in just the fourth day of camp, but remembered his glory days with the New York Yankees when he won 19 games two years in a row and was runner up for the Cy Young award.

After four years with the Yankees, he spent two the Nationals and one with the Blue Jays.

In June 2008, while pitching for NY, Wang injured his foot while running the bases in an inter-league game against the Pirates.

It's been speculated that Wang's recovery from that injury caused him to overcompensate and led to a breakdown in his mechanics and further injuries.

The injury marked the beginning of a slow slide out of the MLB spotlight.

His last pitched in the Majors in 2013 with six unimpressive starts for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Last year pitched for the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox triple A affiliates, amassing a 13-8 record.

That was good enough to open some eyes around the league and the Braves offered him a minor league contract in November, 2014.

Wang says he's fully fit and determined to make the most of his latest opportunity.

Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. said he was overwhelmed after waking up in Japan on Tuesday (13th November) to the news the had been voted the 2018 National League 'Rookie of the Year'.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Ronald Acuna Jr. was a runaway choice for the National League 'Rookie of the Year' award over Washington outfielder Juan Soto - a contest between two 20-year-olds.

Acuna received 27 first place votes and three second place votes for 144 points.

Soto picked up two first place votes and 89 points, while Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler finished third with one first place vote and 28 points.    

Both Acuna and Soto are in Japan with a major league All-Star team.

Acuna started the season in Triple-A baseball and made his debut on 25th April when he was the youngest player in the majors at 20 years, 128 days.

The Venezuelan hit .293 with 26 homers, 64 RBIs and 16 steals with a .917 OPS.

The American League East also came down to the final day.

Tampa Bay claimed the division title...when the Yankees fell at Boston 8-4.

The Rays finished the regular season with a 3-2 win over Kansas City.

Tampa Bay will host the Rangers Wednesday afternoon at Tropicana Field.

The Yankees win the wild card...and now hit the road to face Minnesota...also on Wednesday.

New York went into the final day of the season needing a victory and a Tampa Bay loss at Kansas City to win the division.

A spider-like robot was sending back valuable scientific data from

inside an active Alaskan volcano on Tuesday (2/8), despite being

hit by a falling rock. The eight-legged Dante II robot has been

sent where no human would dare to tread -- an active crater of

Mount Spurr, a volcano 90 miles (145 kms) west of Anchorage, which

constantly spews rocks and sulphurous gases. The robot's movements

are controlled from a command centre in Anchorage and are

monitored via satellite by scientists at the National Aeronautics

and Space Administration's (NASA) Ames Research Centre near San

Francisco. The scientists aim to measure the chemical and

temperature properties of the crater floor and to obtain

high-resolution photographs of the inside of the volcano, which

erupted in 1992 and twice in 1993. Dante has crawled 650 feet (198

meters) down the inside of the crater. Scientists had a tense

moment Monday when a small rock hit one of the robot's legs but

caused no damage. The metal robot, 10 feet (3 meters) long and eight feet (2.4 meters) wide, is tethered to a cable carrying communications and electricity, and is equipped with cameras and sensors. Using

sophisticated computerized virtual reality techniques, NASA

scientists at Ames are able to visualize the robot's surroundings.

Phil Mickelson was the only man in shorts on Monday, in variable weather conditions, as many of the main contenders played their practice rounds ahead of the 149th Open Championship at Royal St George's, Sandwich on England's south-east coast.

The 51-year-old USPGA champion paired up with the 2020 US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau.

A few minutes before they took to the course, the Open champion Shane Lowry teed off ahead of his defence, after winning the tournament back in 2019.

LEAD IN:

A postman has been hailed as 'Postal Rambo' for making deliveries to one of the most remote communities in Russia.

Sergey Kondakov has to drive through mud-soaked forest tracks and cross rivers to reach residents of Krasny Yar.

STORY-LINE:

For most vehicles, this road would be inaccessible.

But Sergey Kondakov won't let a bit of mud stop his deliveries.

The postman makes this journey every month, to the village of Krasny Yar in the Yaroslav region, one of the most remote and difficult to reach places for the Russian postal service.

The route takes Kondakov through a forest and across two rivers. Much of the drive is along muddy tracks so an all terrain vehicle is essential.

At a shop in another village, he loads up with products to bring to the residents of Krasny Yar.

His vehicle can carry up to 300 kilograms and as well as letter and parcels, he also delivers goods such as medicines.

It's all in a day's work for the postman.

"I have bought this (vehicle) especially to drive to the villages, I cannot do it by foot. I started to drive a tractor in 1978, right after school and I am still driving. There is nothing difficult in it," Kondakov says.

"How can I be afraid of the forest, I have been raised in the forest, the forest is my second home."

It's a six hour round trip for Kondakov to get to Krasny Yar.

Forty years ago, it was a large village with a population of a thousand people. There was even a small airport.

But logging industry has ended here, and now only seven people remain in the village.

They have electricity - but no street lights.

"If they put four lanterns in the village it will be better," says resident Nikolay Ivliyev.

"Autumn and winter are coming and in the evening if you go out it is silent everywhere and (dark) like in a pit. Not many people are here, but at least you will be able to see that people live here."

Every month, Kondakov is a welcome face in the village, bringing the locals everything they need to survive until his next visit.

In fact, Sergey Kondakov is the only government official in the local area. If necessary, he can also bring a police officer or transport a patient to medical appointment.

He has been working as a postman for the past three years, but even in such a short period of time he has been dubbed with an honorary nickname by local residents - Postal Rambo.

"He helps us out all the time. He brings us mail, brings food. He constantly helps us. Without him, I don't know how we would live at all," says Alexandra Stepankova, a local resident.

He distributes pensions, receives payments for electricity, and delivers ordered products.

With the end of summer, the daylight hours are shorter and he will have to return home in complete darkness.

But he knows that for the villagers, he is the only connection with civilization.
