Brazil's top cartoonists and artists have launched an exhibition exploring freedom of expression and militancy in the aftermath of the attack at the French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The exhibition titled "Traco Livre" meaning "Free trace" in English, opened in Rio de Janeiro at the Scenarium Gallery in the bohemian Lapa district.

The works examined terrorism, freedom of expression and many directly referenced the Charlie Hebdo attack.

Artist Cesar Lobo included in his artwork the words "Je Suis Charlie," which were seen on posters in worldwide demonstrations which took place in solidarity with the cartoonists killed in the January attack.

But instead of holding up the poster, Lobo placed it on the floor facing Mecca and had it resemble an Islamic prayer rug.

The letters spelling "Charlie" were filled with the names of over 500 victims of militant attacks in various countries.

In another of his works, Lobo chose Andy Warhol's iconic "Campbell Soup" piece and inserted "Je Suis Charlie" onto the cans to reflect how support for the victims of the attack had become so popular.

Lobo said the Charlie Hebdo attack made humour's place in society relevant again.

"I think that in reality what changed is the fact that humour has started being important again. Humour is the most radical form of interpreting reality and humour was lacking themes and importance," Lobo said.

The exhibition runs until 25 April.

One man is using satirical cartoons to tackle political issues in Algeria.

Despite receiving threats and intimidation from critics, caricaturist Ghilas Ainouche vows to continue doing the job he loves.

STORYLINE

One day this signature could be priceless.

It belongs to Ghilas Ainouche who spends his days working as a caricaturist, poking fun at Algeria's government and institutions.

At 26-years-old Ainouche may seem young, but he has seven years of experience behind him.

He'd never planned to draw for a living, but he says circumstance pushed him to pick up a pen and put it to paper.

"The desire to draw about politics, about things that are not right, came when I was at university," he explains.

"I was rebelling. And I thought that the only meaning to life was just to live first of all. And we can not live at the minimum. So I asked myself how can I talk about that, I do not have any weapons to fight, and get revenge on all those people who are putting us into these kinds of situations. But, what I know about is drawing."

To him drawing is a weapon.

But it took time to be taken seriously, he says.

He began to draw for free for his university newspaper and then for his local paper in his hometown of Bejaia.

Taking a chance, he moved to Algiers with the idea of meeting as many newspaper editors as he could, but many said his drawings were too polemical.

Since then he's become a hit at his university and has more than 24,000 fans on facebook.

But there's still only one newspaper in the country willing to publish his stories, the online newspaper "Everything about Algeria".

He's worked for them since 2013 and sends one drawing a day.

"Every drawing is a new challenge. Every drawing brings reaction. The problem is that there is not just criticisms. They (people who criticise him) do not criticise me in a constructive way. But I'm facing insults, threats. It's infringement to myself as a caricaturist."

Drawing is his passion, even if it's a dangerous one.

Ainouche is well aware of the problems he faces.

He counts the artists of Charlie Hebdo amongst his friends - visiting the team in March 2014 and later freelancing for the magazine.

The day of the Charlie Hebdo attacks in January 2015, he explains, was one of the worst of his life.

"My friend told me - Charb, Cabu, Tignous, Wolinski - he did not told me about Honore because at that time we thought he was still alive. I was aware of Honore's death after. I asked my friend - please are you really serious? He told me that he was sure."

He is passionate about highlighting the importance of his work - and that of his colleagues.

Today he is participating in a conference organised by Amnesty International.

Sat alongside him is Hichem Baba Ahmed - AKA The Hic - one of the most famous caricaturists working in Algeria at the moment.

He currently works for El Watan newspaper.

After an uneasy decade in the 90s, when caricaturists were targeted and threatened, Baba Ahmed says it's important to have young people like Ainouche to continue the fight.

He says many journalists and caricaturists turned their backs on their careers during Algeria's 'black decade' - the civil war between the government and Islamic radicals which left more than 200,000 in the country dead.

"First, I can only be happy that young people (like Ainouche) can shake us up a bit. And secondly I'm more than happy because we cannot leave this profession and let this field of free-speech disappear."

Ainouche says he's received threats at home in Bejaia, but that won't stop him from doing what he loves and cares about.

"If I died, I'd have a clear conscience. I would have done my duty. I would have done my best for society, I would have denounced, I would have said what I really think."

STORYLINE

A journalist working for Charlie Hebdo said on Tuesday that backing off from publishing drawings related to sensitive issues due to pressure from extremist groups would eventually put democracy at risk.

Antonio Fischetti, who survived January's extremist attack in Paris against the French satirical magazine, made the comment on Tuesday during a news conference in Lima.

Fischetti said he survived the attack because he had an appointment that day that kept him away from the magazine's editorial offices.

Brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi methodically massacred 12 people at the Charlie Hebdo offices in January this year.

The French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has been presented a freedom of expression award from the PEN American Centre.

Its representatives received a standing ovation Tuesday night after an emotional week-long debate over whether the honour was deserved.

Charlie Hebdo Editor-in-Chief Gerard Biard said he was proud to accept the award and used his speech to thank those who had supported the magazine.

Security was heavy as Salman Rushdie, Neil Gaiman and hundreds of writers, editors and others from the publishing world attended PEN's gala at the American Museum of Natural History.

PEN describes itself as a 'global literary network'.

Michael Ondaatje, Peter Carey and four other authors withdrew from the event because of objections to what they considered the magazine's offensive cartoons of Islam and Muslims.

Those who did not attend came in for criticism from Rushdie, who said only defending free speech that you agree with is what is "normally called censorship."

Hebdo was given the prize in the wake of the shootings in January at the magazine's offices that killed 12 people.

The Paris kosher supermarket where four hostages were killed by Amedy Coulibaly on 9 January reopened to an eager clientele on Sunday.

Coulibaly killed four hostages in the attack on the Hyper Cacher on the edge of Paris, two days after the assault on the Charlie Hebdo newspaper by the Kouachi brothers which left 12 dead.

But on Sunday, a throng of shoppers pushed toward the doors to stock up on kosher products, particularly in preparation for the Jewish holiday of Passover in early April.

Laurent Mimoun, who owns the supermarket, took media down to the cellar to show the cold storage rooms where the hostages were hidden during the assault.

He told assembled media that the victims of the assault were the key motivation in reopening the shop.

Eric Cohen, the father of the one of those victims, Yohan, a young man who worked at the Hyper Cacher, is still reeling from the death of his son.

"Hate, anger, injustice" is how he described his feelings at the reopening.

France's Interior Minister meanwhile toured the shop ahead of the customers.

He told reporters that "we are determined to live freely in our country" and appealed for harmony and brotherhood, which he said would always trump violence.

A Frenchman believed to have links to one of the Charlie Hebdo attackers was

remanded in custody in Bulgaria on Friday until another hearing could

determine whether he should be extradited

to France.

Joachim Fritz-Joly, 29, was arrested on two European arrest warrants on

January 1 as he tried to cross into Turkey.

One warrant cited alleged links to a extremist organisation and a second was

for allegedly kidnapping his three-year-old son and smuggling him out of

the country.

Fritz-Joly is suspected of having links to Cherif Kouachi, one of the

Charlie Hebdo attackers.

At a court hearing earlier that week, Fritz-Joly denied being part of an

extremist ring.

Tens of thousands of Tunisians attended a march in their country's capital, Tunis, on Sunday to denounce extremist violence following the attack on the National Bardo Museum.

Waving Tunisian flags and carrying banners reading "Together against terrorism", the demonstrators marched through central Tunis, by the site of the deadly March 18 shooting that claimed twenty-two lives of mainly foreign tourists, as well as two gunmen.

French President Francois Hollande, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and several foreign ministers and legislators from other countries are joining an anti-terrorism ceremony in Tunis after the march.

The Tunisian government called on all major political parties to join the march from the seat of government at Bab Es-Saadoun to the museum.

Speaking on Sunday morning before heading to Tunisia, Hollande said it was important to show solidarity with Tunisia, which became the latest victim of extremist violence and was the country that led the Arab Spring revolt across the region.

As a result of the 2011 revolution, Tunisia built a democratic system, which was deeply shaken by the museum attack, for which the Islamic State group claimed responsibility.

Libyan media professionals say the industry has become dangerous and irresponsible since the end of the country's revolution.

Workers for state media agencies claim new independent organisations are encouraging violence and say their colleagues are being threatened.

Fawzi Balhasin enters the recording studio.

He's a talk show host on Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar Radio in Bayda.

It's an official state radio channel that has existed since 1969.

But competition for the airwaves has increased since the fall of former dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Prior to 2011, only state-owned channels could broadcast.

But now there are more than sixty satellite channels available to Libyans.

They target a wide range of different factions.

Balhasin says many are controlled by groups whose aim is to inflame tensions in an already fractious country.

"The media suffers from many problems and challenges," he says. "Unfortunately the media became political and controlled by political groups, not for the good of the people and the nation."

"It (the media) became, in a strange way, used to agitate and propagate violence among the Libyan people. What we see now is that Libyan blood has become very cheap to some media and channels," he adds.

Working in the media is a dangerous job here.

France-based non governmental organisation, Reporters Without Borders has registered seven murders, 37 abductions and 127 physical attacks or acts of harassment on journalists since the end of the Libyan revolution in October 2011.

Journalists are viewed as a legitimate target for attack.

Mahmoud Alfarjani, General Manager of Libyan state news agency LANA says that the media flourished in 2011 and 2012 producing a higher quality of media.

"But now because of militias, terrorism, the security situation and political situation there are many local journalists who have fled Libya because of threats," he says. "We have many deaths, we have many cases of journalists and media workers being kidnapped."

He says this situation reflects the dangers faced by journalists all over the world.

"As we have seen with the events in Charlie Hebdo in France, whether we agree or disagree on why the attack on the newspaper happened," he says. "It represents an attack on the freedom of speech and the freedom of thoughts, and an attack on the unarmed journalists which is totally unacceptable whether it's here, or in France, or anywhere else in the world."

The proliferation of new broadcasters, magazines, and newspapers has happened too fast for laws to be passed regulating their activities.

But Omar Al-Guairi, Minister of Information (based in Bayda), says that is now in process.

"We managed in the past three months to collect all of the legislation to present to the House of Representatives (Tubrok based parliament)," he says. "We handed it to the media committee in the House of Representatives for drafting and producing policies to control and organise the media and journalism."

One of the laws being proposed is that the name of Libya is only to be used by the state owned channels.

Reporters Without Borders ranks Libya as 137th out of 180 countries for media freedom.

Over 300 protesters gathered in a narrow street front of the Tunisian embassy in Paris on Thursday to express their solidarity with the Tunisian people in the wake of a deadly attack carried out by gunmen on a museum in Tunis.

Demonstrators urged France to provide military assistance to Tunisia, to help the country combat the extremists, following the attack which claimed 23 lives.

French President Francois Hollande asked Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve to visit Tunisia on Friday to reinforce the security cooperation with the North African country.

The attack on Tunisia's national museum and the nearby parliament on Wednesday, for which the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility, tops years of radical violence that has rocked the country after the 2011 revolution that overthrew the country's long-ruling secular dictator.

The country's disparate radical elements appear to be increasingly drawn toward the banner of the Islamic State.

"Today I am shocked by what goes on in both of my countries for the people I love," Desiree Bellaiche, a Tunisian Jew who has been living in France for more than 50 years, said at the demonstration.

"I am Tunisian and Jewish and my partner is a Muslim. And we are the image of Tunisia, the image of tolerance, of solidarity of love between people without any distinction," she added.

Amongst French and Tunisians, a group of Kurds also joined the gathering to express their solidarity with Tunisia.

France's government is extending special "anti-terrorism" measures at least until early summer, with tens of thousands of security forces protecting hundreds of religious, tourist and other sites since deadly attacks in January in the country.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told journalists on Wednesday that the measures would be re-evaluated in early summer but could remain beyond that.

He said 7,000 troops will be permanently assigned to "counter terrorist" protection.

Le Drian said that French President Francois Hollande decided on Wednesday to extend the measures "as long as necessary."

He also mentioned the "legitimate worry" on the European security "as a neighbouring country, Ukraine, is going through a deep crisis."

"This crisis makes us fear what everybody has been trying to avoid since the end of Word War 1: the recurrence of a war in Europe," he added.

Ahead of the first anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attacks, the newspaper has published its latest edition.

It has elicited a mixed response from Paris residents as the artists refuse to shy away from last year's atrocities.

STORYLINE:

Parisiennes buy-up their daily papers.

Today the usual batch has been joined by the latest copy of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The 32 page magazine marks the first anniversary of the 7 January 2015 attack on the paper's staff by Islamic militants.

As ever its front page is provocative - a depiction of God wielding a Kalashnikov.

Inside features obscene and offensive cartoons, the publication's surviving artists and columnists vaunting their freedom to lampoon everyone from Muslim fundamentalists to children, politicians and Catholic priests.

Surviving staff have declared the paper alive and well, but the headline announces 'The murderer is still at large'.

The headline has divided Parisiennes.

Paris resident Francoise Dufour says it is designed to offend, but that is simply Charlie's 'tone'.

"To me it (the front page) is in Charlie's tone. It is Charlie Hebdo so we should not expect them to become kind of angelical because their team has been reduced by a tenth the way we know (mass shooting)."

Charlie Hebdo's anniversary edition blames Islamic fundamentalists, organised religion, an irresolute government and intelligence failures for the 2015 violence in France.

President Francois Hollande honoured the 17 victims of the January Paris attacks on Charlie Hebdo, a kosher market and police.

Hollande unveiled a plaque near Charlie Hebdo's offices which read "To the memory of victims of the terrorist attack against freedom of expression."

"No they should never stop. They have to continue. We should never stop (doing those kind of front pages), because if we stop we give the right to sick people (terrorist), to continue what they are doing. So we should never stop." says Houssem.

He says he's been treated no differently since the attacks.

The country remains under a state of emergency after the 13 November attacks in Paris that killed 130 people, and extra security was on hand for Tuesday's commemorations.

The French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo on Thursday published its first German-language version.

Germany has given the best reception to the weekly paper, outside of France, since the attack that killed several key members of the Paris editorial staff in January 2015.

The German edition, priced at four euros (4.20 US dollars), will be available across Germany every Thursday.

The first print run is of 200-thousand copies with content mainly translated from the French version, the magazine announced on Wednesday.

German readers will also find some exclusive elements by the French editorial staff in Paris.

A team of five translators is based in the western German town of Frankfurt. Charlie Hebdo eventually hopes to collaborate with German cartoonists.

Tim Wolff, editor of German satirical monthly Titanic, welcomed Charlie Hebdo's move, joking that now Charlie Hebdo is in Germany, his magazine is out of the firing line.

Hundreds of Parisians formed long lines at news outlets across the city as the latest edition of Charlie Hebdo's magazine went on sale in France on Wednesday.

Charlie Hebdo's defiant new issue sold out before dawn around Paris, with scuffles at kiosks over dwindling copies of the paper which has the Prophet Muhammad on its front page.

The sixty copies received by kiosk vendor Tayeb Bekhrad were gone minutes after being delivered at 06:00 local time (0500 GMT).

Some newsstand operators said they expected more copies to arrive on Thursday.

Three million copies of Charlie Hebdo were being delivered across France a week to the day after the assault by two masked gunmen which killed 12 people, including many of the magazine's editorial staff and two police officers.

It was the beginning of three days of terror which saw 17 people killed before the three Islamic extremist attackers were gunned down by security forces.

Charlie Hebdo had faced repeated threats and a firebombing for depictions of the Prophet Muhammad, and its editor and his police bodyguard were the first to die.

The latest issue of Charlie Hebdo has maintained the intentionally offensive tone that made the newspaper famous in France, although global news organisations have differed in their decisions to run images of the cover.

Solidarity for Charlie Hebdo, although not uniform, was widespread in France and abroad.

A day after 12 people were killed in an attack on the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, some social media users in Turkey are calling for similar action against Turkey's most established satirical newspaper Leman.

Published weekly for 23 years, Leman frequently satirises local and international figures, and has drawn ire from Turkey's political establishment.

Leman's editor, Zafer Aknar, told The Associated Press on Friday that fear would not derail his publication's message.

"The repercussions are terrifying. We pay the price very heavily, whether it be psychological or in terms or morale," said Aknar, referring to the messages of hate that the magazine receives on social media platforms.

"Of course we're afraid, but this doesn't mean it'll prevent us from sharing our thoughts," he added.

Aknar, a 16-year veteran of the weekly, says he has spent the last 50 hours in his office preparing a special tribute edition to his colleagues at Charlie Hebdo, with whom Leman published two joint issues in 2002.

Eight journalists, two police officers, a maintenance worker and a visitor lost their lives when the French satirical newspaper was attacked on Wednesday.

Soon after, message started appearing on Twitter voicing approval at the attacks.

One message said: "May they rest in hell," referring to those who died while others appeared to threaten Leman.

Earlier on Friday, demonstrators gathered in front of the French consulate in Istanbul to show their solidarity for the victims of the Charlie Hebdo massacre.

STORYLINE

Thousands of Muslims in Jordan, Turkey and Iran demonstrated on Friday against the French weekly Charlie Hebdo for publishing controversial images of the Prophet Muhammad.

Clashes erupted between thousands of anti-Charlie Hebdo protesters and security forces in Amman after noon prayers.

Police used batons to disperse the crowds.

Several activists were arrested for trying to march towards the French embassy to protest against the publication of what they consider to be an offensive cartoon of Prophet Mohammad by the French magazine.

About 2,000 people chanted slogans against Charlie Hebdo as well as the Jordanian regime for taking part in the Paris unity march last week.

The protest was organised by the Muslim Brotherhood, the biggest and most organised opposition party in Jordan.

In Istanbul, demonstrators held prayers for Cherif and Said Kouachi, the two gunmen who attacked the French publication, killing 12 people.

Some protesters held a poster showing the late al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden and shouted "God is great!".

In Iran, the Leader of Tehran's Friday Prayer has called the publication of Prophet Muhammad's cartoon on the cover of Charlie Hebdo a shocking "crime" and "blasphemy".

Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahedi Kermani lashed out at those who defend the caricature as supporting freedom.

He went on to thank God that the Western countries have started to be hit back by "terrorists".

He said the Islamic State group was initially supported and fostered by Western countries.

His worshippers chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" before taking to the streets to march against Charlie Hebdo.

Muslims believe their faith forbids depictions of the Prophet in any way.

Relatives and friends of Charlie Hebdo cartoonist Bernard Verlhac gathered at a Paris cemetery on Thursday to pay their respects to the artist who together with nine of his work colleagues was shot dead in the newspaper's office last week.

Verlhac, who drew under the name Tignous, was born in Paris in 1957 and published his first works in Charlie Hebdo in 1980.

Among hundreds of mourners who came to the Pere Lachaise Cemetery, where Verlhac was buried earlier on Thursday, was his friend Franck Glemin.

Glemin said he was angry that his friend was "poorly protected" and that the killing "shouldn't have happened."

Among the people who came to the cemetery braving the rain was Marcelo Milchberg from Argentina.

Milchberg said he wanted to show solidarity with the cartoonist and his colleagues.

Charlie Hebdo cartoonist Georges Wolinski, columnists Bernard Maris and Elsa Cayat, and Franck Brinsolaro, the policeman bodyguard for slain Charlie Hebdo chief Stephane Charbonnier, were also buried on Thursday.

Friends, family and officials paid their last respects on Thursday to Charlie Hebdo columnist Elsa Cayat, who was among the 12 killed in the January 7 attack on the satirical newspaper's offices in Paris.

"Tomorrow" was the word of the day across Paris on Wednesday as Charlie Hebdo's defiant new issue sold out before dawn, with scuffles at kiosks over dwindling copies of the paper which has the Prophet Muhammad on its front page.

WORLD REACTIONS TO THE LATEST EDITION OF CHARLIE HEBDO

People around the world reacted to the latest edition of French weekly Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday, a week after gunmen stormed the newspapers officers killing twelve people.

Charlie Hebdo defiantly released its latest issue with a caricature of the Prophet Mohammed on the cover, with copies selling out before dawn across Paris.

Italian daily "Il Fatto Quotidiano" distributed Charlie Hebdo's latest edition in Italy, holding a ceremony in Rome's city hall, honoring freedom of expression and inter-religious dialogue.

The event was attended by some of Italy's most prominent cartoonists, representatives of Muslim groups and the French ambassador in Rome, Catherine Colonna.

In the Filipino capital, Manila, the French community gathered to honour the victims of last week's attacks.

In Lebanon, the magazine's latest cover was widely condemned by religious leaders and everyday people.

Lebanese Mufti spokesman Sheikh Khaldoon Oraymet said the latest edition was a "provocation" to Muslims around the world.

Earlier on Wednesday, Yemen's al-Qaida branch confirmed it carried out last week's deadly assaults to avenge cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, as it called for unity among jihadi ranks and vowed more attacks on the West.
