Tens of thousands of Tunisians attended a march in their country's capital, Tunis, on Sunday to denounce extremist violence following the attack on the National Bardo Museum.

Waving Tunisian flags and carrying banners reading "Together against terrorism", the demonstrators marched through central Tunis, by the site of the deadly March 18 shooting that claimed twenty-two lives of mainly foreign tourists, as well as two gunmen.

French President Francois Hollande, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and several foreign ministers and legislators from other countries are joining an anti-terrorism ceremony in Tunis after the march.

The Tunisian government called on all major political parties to join the march from the seat of government at Bab Es-Saadoun to the museum.

Speaking on Sunday morning before heading to Tunisia, Hollande said it was important to show solidarity with Tunisia, which became the latest victim of extremist violence and was the country that led the Arab Spring revolt across the region.

As a result of the 2011 revolution, Tunisia built a democratic system, which was deeply shaken by the museum attack, for which the Islamic State group claimed responsibility.

Over 300 protesters gathered in a narrow street front of the Tunisian embassy in Paris on Thursday to express their solidarity with the Tunisian people in the wake of a deadly attack carried out by gunmen on a museum in Tunis.

Demonstrators urged France to provide military assistance to Tunisia, to help the country combat the extremists, following the attack which claimed 23 lives.

French President Francois Hollande asked Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve to visit Tunisia on Friday to reinforce the security cooperation with the North African country.

The attack on Tunisia's national museum and the nearby parliament on Wednesday, for which the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility, tops years of radical violence that has rocked the country after the 2011 revolution that overthrew the country's long-ruling secular dictator.

The country's disparate radical elements appear to be increasingly drawn toward the banner of the Islamic State.

"Today I am shocked by what goes on in both of my countries for the people I love," Desiree Bellaiche, a Tunisian Jew who has been living in France for more than 50 years, said at the demonstration.

"I am Tunisian and Jewish and my partner is a Muslim. And we are the image of Tunisia, the image of tolerance, of solidarity of love between people without any distinction," she added.

Amongst French and Tunisians, a group of Kurds also joined the gathering to express their solidarity with Tunisia.

France's government is extending special "anti-terrorism" measures at least until early summer, with tens of thousands of security forces protecting hundreds of religious, tourist and other sites since deadly attacks in January in the country.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told journalists on Wednesday that the measures would be re-evaluated in early summer but could remain beyond that.

He said 7,000 troops will be permanently assigned to "counter terrorist" protection.

Le Drian said that French President Francois Hollande decided on Wednesday to extend the measures "as long as necessary."

He also mentioned the "legitimate worry" on the European security "as a neighbouring country, Ukraine, is going through a deep crisis."

"This crisis makes us fear what everybody has been trying to avoid since the end of Word War 1: the recurrence of a war in Europe," he added.

Some 10,000 soldiers are among the tens of thousands of security forces deployed since the January 7-9 attacks on a Paris kosher market and a satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

Twenty people, including the three gunmen, were killed.

Ahead of the first anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attacks, the newspaper has published its latest edition.

It has elicited a mixed response from Paris residents as the artists refuse to shy away from last year's atrocities.

STORYLINE:

Parisiennes buy-up their daily papers.

Today the usual batch has been joined by the latest copy of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The 32 page magazine marks the first anniversary of the 7 January 2015 attack on the paper's staff by Islamic militants.

As ever its front page is provocative - a depiction of God wielding a Kalashnikov.

Inside features obscene and offensive cartoons, the publication's surviving artists and columnists vaunting their freedom to lampoon everyone from Muslim fundamentalists to children, politicians and Catholic priests.

Surviving staff have declared the paper alive and well, but the headline announces 'The murderer is still at large'.

The headline has divided Parisiennes.

Paris resident Francoise Dufour says it is designed to offend, but that is simply Charlie's 'tone'.

"To me it (the front page) is in Charlie's tone. It is Charlie Hebdo so we should not expect them to become kind of angelical because their team has been reduced by a tenth the way we know (mass shooting)."

Charlie Hebdo's anniversary edition blames Islamic fundamentalists, organised religion, an irresolute government and intelligence failures for the 2015 violence in France.

President Francois Hollande honoured the 17 victims of the January Paris attacks on Charlie Hebdo, a kosher market and police.

Hollande unveiled a plaque near Charlie Hebdo's offices which read "To the memory of victims of the terrorist attack against freedom of expression."

"No they should never stop. They have to continue. We should never stop (doing those kind of front pages), because if we stop we give the right to sick people (terrorist), to continue what they are doing. So we should never stop." says Houssem.

He says he's been treated no differently since the attacks.

The country remains under a state of emergency after the 13 November attacks in Paris that killed 130 people, and extra security was on hand for Tuesday's commemorations.

Journalists in Peru held a panel discussion on Friday as a tribute to the victims of a deadly attack at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris earlier this year.

They debated the value of satire in politics and religion.

Nationally recognised Peruvian journalists, as well as the French ambassador to Peru, took part in the panel.

"Charlie Hebdo comes from a tradition of the left, which is anarchist, anti-clerical, trying to exercise what the cartoon is in its essence - a social mechanism for promoting equality among citizens," said Peruvian journalist Fernando Carvallo during the debate.

On 7 January, masked gunmen stormed the offices of the satirical publication, killing 12 people.

The attack on Charlie Hebdo offices has been France's deadliest in decades.

The French ambassador to Peru, Fabrice Mauries, said the magazine and the 'I am Charlie' slogan that emerged as a rallying cry to offer support to victims had "become a global symbol."

Thousands of Muslims in Pakistan and Afghanistan staged protests against France on Sunday, denouncing the French weekly Charlie Hebdo for publishing controversial images of the Prophet Muhammad.

In the Pakistani city of Karachi, some protesters burned a photograph and an effigy of French President Francois Hollande.

Others marched towards toward the French Consulate, demanding punishment for those who published the caricatures of their Prophet.

Protesters chanted slogans and held banners reading "We are ready to give our lives for the respect of the Prophet Muhammad".

A similar protest was held in Lahore, where angry demonstrators chanted slogans against Charlie Hebdo.

The protest was organised by Jamaat-Ud-Dawa, a controversial Islamic group in Pakistan.

The United Nations considers Jamaat-Ud-Dawa to be a front group for Lashkar-e-Taiba, the militant organisation blamed in the Mumbai attacks of 2008, a charge which the group denies.

Protesters chanted slogans demanding the death of those who committed blasphemy against the Prophet.

In Afghanistan, angry Muslim students condemned the French weekly for publishing the cartoons and called for the French Embassy in Kabul to be shut down.

Muslims believe their faith forbids depictions of the Prophet in any way.

Scores of people protested in Istanbul on Thursday against Cumhuriyet newspaper, which published a selection of cartoons from the latest issue of French satirical newspaper, Charlie Hebdo.

Protesters chanted "God is great," and called for those who published the caricatures of Prophet Mohammed to be punished.

Cumhuriyet newspaper, a secular Turkish daily, printed the four-page selection of cartoons and articles on Wednesday.

They included caricatures of Pope Francis and French President Francois Hollande - but left out cartoons likely to offend Muslims.

However, two Cumhuriyet columnists, Ceyda Karan and Hikmet Cetinkaya, used small, black-and-white images of the new Charlie Hebdo cover as their column headers.

The cover of the Paris-based publication featured a weeping Muhammad, Islam's revered prophet, holding a sign reading "I am Charlie" with the words "All is forgiven" above him.

Journalist Ahmet Ozkose, present at Thursday's protest, accused the pair of behaving "viciously and immorally" for including the small, black-and-white images.

Turkey was rare among Muslim-majority nations to have publications running Charlie Hebdo images.

But the decision has raised tensions in the officially secular country.

French President Francois Hollande on Tuesday unveiled a plaque to honour the victims of the attack at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, as France marked a year since Islamic extremists targeted the satirical magazine, police officers and a kosher market, killing 17 people.

Families of victims joined Hollande, Prime Minister Manuel Valls and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, in unveiling the plaque near the building where Charlie Hebdo staff were holding an editorial meeting when two heavily armed brothers stormed in on 7 January, 2015, killing 11 people.

They then paid homage to police officer Ahmed Merabet, who was killed as he tried to chase down the fleeing gunmen.

Spraypainted on the road was a message of support for the Muslim officer, reading "Je suis Ahmed", or "I am Ahmed", in the red, white and blue of the French flag.

Later in the day, Hollande was to pay homage to four people killed at the kosher supermarket on 9 January.

The 17th victim, a police officer, was killed by one of the gunmen on 8 January.

Hundreds of people attended a candle-lit vigil on Sunday outside the Danish Embassy in Paris to honour and mourn the victims of the attacks that took place in Copenhagen over the weekend.

Memorial organiser Sacha Reingewirtz said Europe and the entire world should stand together to put an end to such attacks and to fight extremists who "are trying to threaten democracy."

France stood by its European neighbour in show of solidarity after the latest string of violence.

The suspected gunman killed by police after shooting attacks against a free speech event and outside a Copenhagen synagogue was 22 years old and had a background in criminal gangs, police said on Sunday.

The suspect was born in Denmark and his criminal record included violence and weapons offences, Copenhagen police said in a statement.

They didn't release his name.

Police believe the suspect carried out both shootings alone but were investigating whether he had received help from others.

Islamic radicals carried out a massacre at the Charlie Hebdo newsroom in Paris last month, followed by an attack on Jews at a kosher grocery store, taking the lives of 17 victims.

Meanwhile on Sunday hundreds of graves were vandalised at a Jewish cemetery in eastern France, in what the interior minister called an "odious act" against religious freedom and tolerance.

French President Francois Hollande arrived on Thursday at the Police Headquarters in Paris to address the police and the military on the anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attacks.

On 7 January 2015, two French-born brothers killed 11 people inside the building where Charlie Hebdo operated, as well as a Muslim policeman outside.

Over the next two days, an accomplice shot a policewoman to death, then stormed a kosher supermarket, killing four hostages.

The French right wing leader Marine Le Pen called for a debate on the rise of Islamic fundamentalism in France on Friday, saying steps need to be taken to "ensure the security of the country and our people."

Speaking after a meeting with French President Francois Hollande, Le Pen went on to say that a change in French foreign policy was needed to sever ties with countries that "support and finance Islamic fundamentalism."

Hundreds of French security forces surrounded a printing house near Charles de Gaulle airport where two heavily armed brothers suspected of attacking a satirical newspaper had taken refuge on Friday.

Cherif and Said Kouachi are the chief suspects in an assault on the offices of Charlie Hebdo which left 12 people dead, including the chief editor and cartoonist who had been under armed guard following the publication of caricatures depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

A memorial ceremony for the victims of the attack is being planned for Sunday, to be held in Paris.

Le Pen, who has herself been the target of the satirical newspaper's front pages in the past, has not been formally invited to the memorial.

She said on Friday that she would not attend.

French President Francois Hollande said on Friday that France is "at war" against extremist groups.

Addressing ambassadors and diplomats in Paris, Hollande said: "It is not a war against a religion. It is a war against hatred."

French, German and Belgian police arrested more than two dozen suspects in a series of raids on Friday, as European authorities rushed to thwart more attacks by people with links to Islamic extremists in the Middle East.

Paris is at its highest terror alert level, and police evacuated the Gare de l'Est train station after a bomb threat on Friday morning.

Twenty people, including the three gunmen, were killed last week in attacks on a kosher supermarket, the offices of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and police officers.

"The attacks committed in Paris are an insult to Islam," said Hollande.

"It is the Muslims - I keep on repeating it - who are the first victims of terrorism," he added.

Hollande also addressed Iran's nuclear programme and the ongoing clashes in eastern Ukraine.

French president Francois Hollande said that new measures to fight terrorism will be presented on Wednesday by the French government.

Speaking in Paris on Tuesday, Hollande said that the aim of the measures was "to control the travels of the jihadists, to reinforce the intelligence system, to prevent the propagation of radical Islamism in prison, and to better monitor and prevent the activities of this movement on the internet."

The tightening of security measures comes in the wake of the militant attacks earlier this month which killed 17 people, including at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher grocery store.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Friday that he wanted to "share a hug" with all French citizens, following the extremist attacks in the French capital last week.

"I really wanted to come here and share a hug with all of Paris and all of France. I wanted to express to you personally the sheer horror and revulsion that all Americans felt for the cowardly and despicable act, the assault on innocent lives and our fundamental values," Kerry said.

He made the comments alongside the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo.

Before addressing the media, the two observed a minute of silence in honour of the 17 victims of last week's attacks in Paris.

Earlier on Friday, Kerry met French President Francois Hollande and Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius before visiting the sites of the attacks, offering silent prayers and laying wreaths to honour the dead.

Members of France's Jewish community met with President Francois Hollande on Sunday, ahead of a massive unity rally in Paris which is expected to involved hundreds of thousands of people.

The rally on Sunday is a huge security challenge for a nation on alert for more violence, after 17 people and three gunmen were killed over three days of attacks on a satirical newspaper, a kosher supermarket and on police.

The President of the Council of Jewish Institutions in France Roger Cukierman called for "strong measures" as he arrived at the Elysee presidential palace for the meeting, saying the situation France has found itself in is a "war."

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve took part in the meeting.

Both Valls and Cazeneuve also attended a vigil outside the 'Hyper Cache' kosher supermarket on Saturday night, attended by thousands, in honour of the four hostages killed when gunman Amedy Coulibaly attacked the market on Friday.

Coulibaly took over the kosher supermarket, demanding freedom for the two brothers who carried out the massacre at the offices of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

At the time, the brothers were trapped in a printing house near Charles de Gaulle airport.

All three men were killed in nearly simultaneous raids by security forces.

Unity against extremism is the overriding message for Sunday's rally.

Among the expected attendees are the Israeli Prime Minister and the Palestinian President, the Ukrainian President and Russian Foreign Minister, the leaders of Britain, Germany, NATO, the Arab League and African nations.

And the French masses, from across the political and religious spectrum.
