Journalists in Peru held a panel discussion on Friday as a tribute to the victims of a deadly attack at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris earlier this year.

They debated the value of satire in politics and religion.

Nationally recognised Peruvian journalists, as well as the French ambassador to Peru, took part in the panel.

"Charlie Hebdo comes from a tradition of the left, which is anarchist, anti-clerical, trying to exercise what the cartoon is in its essence - a social mechanism for promoting equality among citizens," said Peruvian journalist Fernando Carvallo during the debate.

On 7 January, masked gunmen stormed the offices of the satirical publication, killing 12 people.

The attack on Charlie Hebdo offices has been France's deadliest in decades.

The French ambassador to Peru, Fabrice Mauries, said the magazine and the 'I am Charlie' slogan that emerged as a rallying cry to offer support to victims had "become a global symbol."

Hundreds of people attended a candle-lit vigil on Sunday outside the Danish Embassy in Paris to honour and mourn the victims of the attacks that took place in Copenhagen over the weekend.

Memorial organiser Sacha Reingewirtz said Europe and the entire world should stand together to put an end to such attacks and to fight extremists who "are trying to threaten democracy."

France stood by its European neighbour in show of solidarity after the latest string of violence.

The suspected gunman killed by police after shooting attacks against a free speech event and outside a Copenhagen synagogue was 22 years old and had a background in criminal gangs, police said on Sunday.

The suspect was born in Denmark and his criminal record included violence and weapons offences, Copenhagen police said in a statement.

They didn't release his name.

Police believe the suspect carried out both shootings alone but were investigating whether he had received help from others.

Islamic radicals carried out a massacre at the Charlie Hebdo newsroom in Paris last month, followed by an attack on Jews at a kosher grocery store, taking the lives of 17 victims.

Meanwhile on Sunday hundreds of graves were vandalised at a Jewish cemetery in eastern France, in what the interior minister called an "odious act" against religious freedom and tolerance.

French President Francois Hollande said on Friday that France is "at war" against extremist groups.

Addressing ambassadors and diplomats in Paris, Hollande said: "It is not a war against a religion. It is a war against hatred."

French, German and Belgian police arrested more than two dozen suspects in a series of raids on Friday, as European authorities rushed to thwart more attacks by people with links to Islamic extremists in the Middle East.

Paris is at its highest terror alert level, and police evacuated the Gare de l'Est train station after a bomb threat on Friday morning.

Twenty people, including the three gunmen, were killed last week in attacks on a kosher supermarket, the offices of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and police officers.

"The attacks committed in Paris are an insult to Islam," said Hollande.

"It is the Muslims - I keep on repeating it - who are the first victims of terrorism," he added.

Hollande also addressed Iran's nuclear programme and the ongoing clashes in eastern Ukraine.

Over 300 protesters gathered in a narrow street front of the Tunisian embassy in Paris on Thursday to express their solidarity with the Tunisian people in the wake of a deadly attack carried out by gunmen on a museum in Tunis.

Demonstrators urged France to provide military assistance to Tunisia, to help the country combat the extremists, following the attack which claimed 23 lives.

French President Francois Hollande asked Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve to visit Tunisia on Friday to reinforce the security cooperation with the North African country.

The attack on Tunisia's national museum and the nearby parliament on Wednesday, for which the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility, tops years of radical violence that has rocked the country after the 2011 revolution that overthrew the country's long-ruling secular dictator.

The country's disparate radical elements appear to be increasingly drawn toward the banner of the Islamic State.

"Today I am shocked by what goes on in both of my countries for the people I love," Desiree Bellaiche, a Tunisian Jew who has been living in France for more than 50 years, said at the demonstration.

"I am Tunisian and Jewish and my partner is a Muslim. And we are the image of Tunisia, the image of tolerance, of solidarity of love between people without any distinction," she added.

Amongst French and Tunisians, a group of Kurds also joined the gathering to express their solidarity with Tunisia.

Thousands of Muslims in Pakistan and Afghanistan staged protests against France on Sunday, denouncing the French weekly Charlie Hebdo for publishing controversial images of the Prophet Muhammad.

In the Pakistani city of Karachi, some protesters burned a photograph and an effigy of French President Francois Hollande.

Others marched towards toward the French Consulate, demanding punishment for those who published the caricatures of their Prophet.

Protesters chanted slogans and held banners reading "We are ready to give our lives for the respect of the Prophet Muhammad".

A similar protest was held in Lahore, where angry demonstrators chanted slogans against Charlie Hebdo.

The protest was organised by Jamaat-Ud-Dawa, a controversial Islamic group in Pakistan.

In Afghanistan, angry Muslim students condemned the French weekly for publishing the cartoons and called for the French Embassy in Kabul to be shut down.

On November 13th 2015 two police officials said that at least 26 people have been killed in shootings and explosions around Paris, in the deadliest violence in France in decades.

One of the police officials said 11 people were killed in a Paris restaurant in the 10th arrondissement and about 15 killed in the Bataclan theatre, where a hostage-taking is under way.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to be publicly named according to police policy.

An official in Francois Hollande's office told The Associated Press that the French president is meeting with top security officials in the Interior Ministry.

The official gave no other details. The official was not authorized to be publicly named.

Confused football fans were being evacuated after two loud explosions were head during a game at the Stade de France stadium in Paris on November 13th.

A police union official said there were two suicide attacks and a bombing near the national stadium where France and Germany were playing a friendly match.

Several dozen people were killed in a series of unprecedented attacks around Paris, French President Francois Hollande said, announcing that he was closing the country's borders and declaring a state of emergency.

At least 35 people died in shootings and explosions at multiple sites, many of them in a popular concert hall where patrons were taken hostage, police and medical officials said.

The series of attacks gripped the city in fear and recalled the horrors of the Charlie Hebdo carnage in January 2015.

Medical staff and investigators continued to remove bodies from the Bataclan concert hall in eastern Paris early on November 14th, after attackers killed at least 100 people inside.

The attackers opened fire on a crowd waiting to hear American rock band Eagles of Death Metal perform.

One witness heard them yell "Allahu Akbar" - God is great in Arabic - as they started their killing spree and took hostages.

French police authorities said the assailants also wore explosive belts, which they detonated.

Shortly after noon, municipal workers arrived, tasked with cleaning up the gruesome scene as best they can, without disturbing the scene of public mourning.

The whole neighbourhood is in shock.

Parisians gathered in the city's Place de la Republique in the early hours of November 15th to commemorate the victims of the attacks that rocked the French capital on November 13th.

Candles were placed on the ground and on the central monument in memory of the fallen.

Many people underlined the importance of staying united, despite the distressing circumstances.

The vigil started on Saturday despite authorities banning all public demonstrations in the Paris area until Thursday.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the gun and bomb rampage that targeted a concert hall, as well as restaurants and a football stadium.

At least 129 people died, with hundreds more wounded.

Crowds gathered in the same location in January following the shooting at the offices of the Charlie Hebdo magazine.

A large police operation is under way in the Paris suburb of Saint Denis and it's believed to be linked to the deadly attacks on the French capital, a police official said on November 18th.

Earlier on November 18th, a woman wearing an explosive suicide vest blew herself as heavily armed police tried to storm the suburban Paris apartment where the suspected mastermind of last week's gun and bomb rampage was believed to be holed up, police said.

They said one man was also killed and five people arrested in the standoff, which began before dawn and continued more than five hours later. One person remained inside the apartment.

But three days of the highest terror alert and unprecedented measures that have closed down the city's subways, schools and main stores, has created a very different atmosphere as the Belgian capital tries to avoid attacks similar to the ones that caused devastating carnage in Paris.

"Of course we are scared, everyone is scared here. We are scared for our children, for ourselves, for our own lives. We are scared to take public transport," said Cathy Frederic, who works in Brussels.

On November 23rd, Prime Minister Charles Michel announced Brussels would remain at the highest alert level for a fourth consecutive day, but that schools and subways would reopen on Wednesday.

Michel said that decision was "a clear signal that we want to gradually return to normal life" and thanked the Belgian population for their understanding, noting that the country was facing an extremely difficult situation.

Two people have been arrested in Belgium on suspicion of planning attacks in Brussels during the holidays, the federal prosecutor's office said November 29th.

The investigation revealed "the threat of serious attacks that would target several emblematic places in Brussels and be committed during the end-of-year holidays," the prosecutor's office said.

A source close to the investigation said Grand Place, the Belgian capital's main square, thronged this time of year with holiday shoppers and strollers, was one of the suspected targets.

The two suspects, who the source said were male, were arrested following searches in the Brussels area, the Liege region and Flemish Brabant, the prosecutor's office said.

It did not disclose their names or further information about them.

The prosecutor's office said no additional details would be made public, but that the probe was not connected to the November 13th attacks in Paris, in which numerous suspects, including presumed ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud and fugitive Salah Abdeslam, had connections to Belgium.

Police and army patrols were greatly beefed up in Brussels following the Paris attacks.

Security officials themselves have been ordered to take special precautions to ensure their own safety, said the Belgian government's Crisis Centre.

On November 13th 2015 two police officials said that at least 26 people have been killed in shootings and explosions around Paris, in the deadliest violence in France in decades.

One of the police officials said 11 people were killed in a Paris restaurant in the 10th arrondissement and about 15 killed in the Bataclan theatre, where a hostage-taking is under way.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to be publicly named according to police policy.

An official in Francois Hollande's office told The Associated Press that the French president is meeting with top security officials in the Interior Ministry.

The official gave no other details. The official was not authorized to be publicly named.

Confused football fans were being evacuated after two loud explosions were head during a game at the Stade de France stadium in Paris on November 13th.

A police union official said there were two suicide attacks and a bombing near the national stadium where France and Germany were playing a friendly match.

Several dozen people were killed in a series of unprecedented attacks around Paris, French President Francois Hollande said, announcing that he was closing the country's borders and declaring a state of emergency.

The French right wing leader Marine Le Pen called for a debate on the rise of Islamic fundamentalism in France on Friday, saying steps need to be taken to "ensure the security of the country and our people."

Speaking after a meeting with French President Francois Hollande, Le Pen went on to say that a change in French foreign policy was needed to sever ties with countries that "support and finance Islamic fundamentalism."

Hundreds of French security forces surrounded a printing house near Charles de Gaulle airport where two heavily armed brothers suspected of attacking a satirical newspaper had taken refuge on Friday.

Cherif and Said Kouachi are the chief suspects in an assault on the offices of Charlie Hebdo which left 12 people dead, including the chief editor and cartoonist who had been under armed guard following the publication of caricatures depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

A memorial ceremony for the victims of the attack is being planned for Sunday, to be held in Paris.

Le Pen, who has herself been the target of the satirical newspaper's front pages in the past, has not been formally invited to the memorial.
