Hundreds of Iranians demonstrated outside the French Embassy in Tehran on Monday over the cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad on the latest issue of the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.

The protesters chanted "Death to France" and burnt American and Israeli flags.

Some demanded the French Embassy be closed and the ambassador expelled.

State TV said similar gatherings were held in other Iranian cities.

Conservative lawmaker Ahmad Tavakoli told the demonstrators that the attack on Charlie Hebdo was a result of the West's wrongdoings against Muslims.

The French embassy was heavily guarded by Iranian riot police, who pushed back protesters trying to reach the building.

Iran has condemned the 7 January attack on Charlie Hebdo's Paris office that left 12 dead.

But the country has also criticised the satirical weekly's first issue after the attack, which shows a drawing of a tearful Prophet Muhammad holding a sign saying "Je suis Charlie" (I am Charlie).

Protesters in Yemen are taking to the streets in anger - following the latest publication of the French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo.

The magazine's new issue depicts the Prophet Muhammad on its cover.

Some see the cartoon as a defiant expression of free speech. But in Yemen's capital, protesters have marched to the French Embassy, saying the cartoon is an attack on their religion.

STORYLINE:

Outside the French Embassy in Sanaa, protesters are outraged at the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in the latest edition of Charlie Hebdo.

"Stop this drawing!" they chant, waving banners denouncing insults to their prophet.

A police vehicle races by carrying reinforcements to secure the embassy.

"The Arab and Islamic world must take steps to try to change this condemnation into action and deeds, and cut ties. If Arab and Muslim countries really loved the Prophet, peace be upon him, they would cut ties with France," says religious scholar, Abdel Salam al-Wajih.

This latest edition of Charlie Hebdo is the first published since the 7 January attack on its headquarters that left 12 dead.

Muslim religious tradition generally prohibits depictions of Muhammad, out of respect for him and to discourage idolatry.

Many Muslims, like protester Muhammed Ali, find even favourable images of the Prophet deeply offensive.

"Today we marched to the French Embassy to say 'no' to insulting God's Prophet," he says.

"The people will not be silent and these crowds show that. We say to the Jews and the French, get out of our land."

However, there are others who do not partake in the harsh condemnation of the magazine.

Last week a handful of activists were prevented by security forces from expressing support for Charlie Hebdo in front of the French Embassy.

The protests come as Yemen's US-backed leadership faces a serious threat as government troops clash with Shiite rebels near the presidential palace and a key military base.

The militants have seized control of state media in fierce fighting that marks the biggest challenge yet to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi by the rebels, known as Houthis, who swept down from their northern strongholds last year and captured the capital in September.

The violence threatens to undermine efforts by the US and its allies to battle al-Qaida's Yemeni affiliate, which claims responsibility for the attack on Charlie Hebdo.

Thousands of Muslims in Pakistan and Afghanistan staged protests against France on Sunday, denouncing the French weekly Charlie Hebdo for publishing controversial images of the Prophet Muhammad.

In the Pakistani city of Karachi, some protesters burned a photograph and an effigy of French President Francois Hollande.

Others marched towards toward the French Consulate, demanding punishment for those who published the caricatures of their Prophet.

Protesters chanted slogans and held banners reading "We are ready to give our lives for the respect of the Prophet Muhammad".

A similar protest was held in Lahore, where angry demonstrators chanted slogans against Charlie Hebdo.

The protest was organised by Jamaat-Ud-Dawa, a controversial Islamic group in Pakistan.

The United Nations considers Jamaat-Ud-Dawa to be a front group for Lashkar-e-Taiba, the militant organisation blamed in the Mumbai attacks of 2008, a charge which the group denies.

In Afghanistan, angry Muslim students condemned the French weekly for publishing the cartoons and called for the French Embassy in Kabul to be shut down.

Hundreds of demonstrators marched along the beach front in Rio De Janeiro on Sunday to pay tribute to the 17 victims who died during three days of bloodshed in Paris last week.

Thousands of protesters gathered in front of Argentina's government palace in Buenos Aires on Monday ight calling for justice following the death of a prosecutor who had accused President Cristina Fernandez of shielding Iranian suspects in the nation's deadliest terror attack.

Clapping and banging on pots the protesters demanded the government explain the death of special prosecutor Alberto Nisman.

Nisman, who had been investigating the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people, was found in the bathroom of his apartment late Sunday, hours before he was to testify in a Congressional hearing about the case.

The Argentine government said on Monday that Nisman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his locked apartment.

Investigating prosecutor Viviana Fein said the preliminary autopsy found "no intervention" of others in Nisman's death.

However, Fein said she would not rule out the possibility that Nisman was "induced" to suicide because the gun was not his.

"A process of investigation of a terrible crime for the country, has been interfered with. It was interfered with in such a way that everyone understands that it was not a suicide, but something provoked or a murder," said protester Rene Martin on Monday night.

Pakistani protesters took to the streets on Thursday as lawmakers approved a resolution condemning the publication of the images of Islam's prophet in the satirical French magazine attacked by extremists last week.

Like many other Muslim nations, Pakistan has condemned the deadly rampage at the Paris office of the Charlie Hebdo weekly, which killed 12 people, including editors, cartoonists and two policemen.

But it has also condemned the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, which many Muslims consider sacrilege.

In Lahore supporters of the Sunni Tahreek group marched with a banner reading "The Sketch Makers Must Be Hanged Immediately" and placards decrying Charlie Hebdo and its staff.

"We condemn blasphemy and we condemn the sketch makers. We condemn blasphemers, we curse Charlie Hebdo, we curse European Union," said local group leader, Asif Ashraf Jalali.

In Islamabad, lawmakers marched outside Parliament House after the vote to protest against the latest images published by Charlie Hebdo magazine.

Some chanted, "In the name of the Prophet, we're ready to die".

Religious Affairs Minister Sardar Mohammad Yousuf said the lawmakers unanimously approved the resolution condemning the publication of the images.

He did not say how many legislators were present, but said lawmakers from all political parties backed the measure.

The resolution also condemned violence under any pretext.

The minister said the resolution would be sent to all foreign missions in the country and to the United Nations to register the protest against the cartoons.

Islam generally forbids depictions of the Prophet Muhammad, and many in Muslim-majority Pakistan view the cartoons as blasphemous.

The magazine has invoked freedom of speech to defend its publications of cartoons that many Muslims and non-Muslims alike consider offensive.

Dozens of Iraqi journalists working for al-Nahar press institution on Thursday gathered on a road leading to the French embassy in central Baghdad protesting against the recent cartoons of Prophet Muhammad published by French magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The protesters burned a French flag in front of the embassy.

The French Embassy in Baghdad has been protected by large metal gates and concrete walls since 2003.

There have been protests around the Muslim world following the publication of a special edition of Charlie Hebdo which featured caricatures of Prophet Muhammad.

The edition was published in the wake of an attack on the magazine's Paris office in which 12 people were killed.

Around 100 people demonstrated in the Afghan capital Kabul on Thursday against the publishers of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, accusing them of blasphemy.

Many of the protesters carried banners emblazoned with a red heart and the name of the Prophet Muhammad, as they marched near the French Embassy.

Some in the crowd chanted "We love Muhammad."

Protest organiser Abdul Saboor Fakhri said the demonstrators want the Afghan government to close the French Embassy and expel the ambassador to ease the anger that he says Afghans feel toward the magazine.

"We are ready for any kind of sacrifices in defending our prophet and faith," he added.

There have been small, sporadic protests in Afghanistan since the publication of a special edition of Charlie Hebdo in the wake of an attack on the magazine's Paris office.

A march in the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir turned violent on Wednesday, as demonstrators clashed with police in the streets of Srinagar.

The march was to commemorate the killing of 50 people by Indian paramilitary forces in 1990, but quickly turned into a protest condemning the French magazine Charlie Hebdo for their controversial cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

Protesters threw stones at police and attacked government institutions, while police responded with tear gas.

Protesters shouted a mix of slogans against both the Indian government and Charlie Hebdo.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Kashmir where rebel groups have been fighting against Indian rule since 1989.

More than 68,000 people have been killed since 1989 in the rebel uprising and a subsequent Indian military crackdown that has suppressed most rebel activity.

Several hundred Afghans burnt the French flag as they chanted "Death to France" at a rally in the Afghan city of Jalalabad on Monday.

The protesters were demonstrating against the the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's latest publication of a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad, which devout Muslims deem an insult to Islam.

The protesters, mostly young Afghan men, also demanded the French Embassy in Kabul be shut down and that the French government apologise to Muslims.

It was the third straight day of protests across Afghanistan since the paper's first issue following the 7 January attack on its headquarters by Islamic extremists that killed 12 people.

Demonstrators in Brazil paid a second day of tribute to victims of a deadly attack at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris in which 12 people died on Wednesday.

A silent demonstration, organized by a local NGO, was held in Rio de Janeiro's neighboring city Niteroi on Thursday.

Participants held placards reading 'Je suis Charlie' (I am Charlie) and 'Rio est Charlie (Rio is Charlie) along with pencils to offer support the family of the victims and backing freedom of expression.

" What happened yesterday in Paris is absurd," said the vigil organizer Antonio Costa. " We cannot stay quiet when a big menace threatens peace between peoples"

Demonstrators also held pencils in the shape of the Cross to honor the four cartoonists that died in the attack.

The publication's depictions of Islam and Islamic extremists have drawn condemnation and threats before - its office was firebombed in 2011 - although it also satirized other religions and political figures.

" If they don't agree, they must fight what they think is wrong in a democratic manner," said demonstrator Moises Monteiro.

Masked gunmen stormed the offices of the newspaper, killing 12 people, before escaping in a car on Wednesday morning.

It was France's deadliest terrorist attack in half a century.

Thousands of protesters gathered in front of Argentina's government palace in Buenos Aires on Monday night calling for justice following the death of a prosecutor who had accused President Cristina Fernandez of shielding Iranian suspects in the nation's deadliest terror attack.

Clapping and banging on pots, the protesters demanded the government explain the death of special prosecutor Alberto Nisman.

Nisman, who had been investigating the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people, was found in the bathroom of his apartment late on Sunday, hours before he was to testify in a Congressional hearing about the case.

The Argentine government said on Monday that Nisman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his locked apartment.

Investigating prosecutor Viviana Fein said the preliminary autopsy found "no intervention" of others in Nisman's death.

However, Fein said she would not rule out the possibility that Nisman was "induced" to suicide because the gun was not his.

"A process of investigation of a terrible crime for the country, has been interfered with. It was interfered with in such a way that everyone understands that it was not a suicide, but something provoked or a murder," said protester Rene Martin on Monday night.

Many of the protesters held up signs reading "I am Nisman", emulating the rallying cry of "I am Charlie" which emerged after two gunmen killed 12 people on 7 January at the Paris headquarters of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

In a letter on her official website, Fernandez lamented Nisman's death, saying it generated "stupor and questions." She initially used the word "suicide" in connection with his death but later put a question mark next to the word.

Tens of thousands of Tunisians attended a march in their country's capital, Tunis, on Sunday to denounce extremist violence following the attack on the National Bardo Museum.

Waving Tunisian flags and carrying banners reading "Together against terrorism", the demonstrators marched through central Tunis, by the site of the deadly March 18 shooting that claimed twenty-two lives of mainly foreign tourists, as well as two gunmen.

French President Francois Hollande, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and several foreign ministers and legislators from other countries are joining an anti-terrorism ceremony in Tunis after the march.

The Tunisian government called on all major political parties to join the march from the seat of government at Bab Es-Saadoun to the museum.

Speaking on Sunday morning before heading to Tunisia, Hollande said it was important to show solidarity with Tunisia, which became the latest victim of extremist violence and was the country that led the Arab Spring revolt across the region.

As a result of the 2011 revolution, Tunisia built a democratic system, which was deeply shaken by the museum attack, for which the Islamic State group claimed responsibility.
