Thousands of Muslims demonstrated in Karachi on Saturday over a French satirical weekly's latest caricature of the Prophet Muhammad.

Protesters burnt French, US and Israeli flags and chanted slogans against Charlie Hebdo.

Religious scholar Shujauddin Sheikh criticised the Western world for having "double standards" when addressing the freedom of speech issue.

"We (as Muslims) believe and respect all prophets and when this (blasphemy) is done against the Prophet Muhammad, who is Allah Almighty's blessing to all humanity, they (the West) say it is freedom of speech," he said.

"The world and Muslims should understand that this is a double standard - talking about some people is punishable while the blasphemy of Prophet Muhammad is considered to be freedom of speech."

The depiction of the prophet is deemed insulting to many followers of Islam.

A hard-line cleric in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday led a memorial service for the two brothers who attacked the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris, praising their assault.

of Peshawar, said the attacks were done on behalf of all Muslim communities.

"Those young men who sacrificed their lives and sent the blasphemers to the hell, we salute them all for their martyrdom," he said.

About 40 people attended, with some carrying banners condemning the magazine.

They chanted praise for Said and Cherif Kouachi, who massacred 12 people in the newspaper attack last week and were later killed by police.

Charlie Hebdo often lampooned organised religions, including Islam by drawing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

Such depictions are considered blasphemous by many Muslims.

Thousands of Sunni Muslims gathered on Thursday in Karachi to protest against the publication of the caricatures of Prophet Muhammad in the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The protest was organised by the Sunni Tehreek, a moderate Sunni group, whose leader Sarwat Aijaz Qadri said nobody in the world has the right to insult other peoples' religious beliefs.

"We demand a social boycott, a boycott of their products so that they realise that they have harmed peace of the world," he said.

The publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad has sparked anger and protest in Muslim nations across the globe.

The magazine has invoked freedom of speech to defend its publications of cartoons that many Muslims and non-Muslims alike consider offensive.

There have been protests around the Muslim world following the publication of a special edition of Charlie Hebdo which featured caricatures of Prophet Muhammad in the wake of an attack on the magazine's Paris office that killed several employees at the magazine.
