STORYLINE

Thousands of Muslims in Jordan, Turkey and Iran demonstrated on Friday against the French weekly Charlie Hebdo for publishing controversial images of the Prophet Muhammad.

Clashes erupted between thousands of anti-Charlie Hebdo protesters and security forces in Amman after noon prayers.

Police used batons to disperse the crowds.

Several activists were arrested for trying to march towards the French embassy to protest against the publication of what they consider to be an offensive cartoon of Prophet Mohammad by the French magazine.

About 2,000 people chanted slogans against Charlie Hebdo as well as the Jordanian regime for taking part in the Paris unity march last week.

The protest was organised by the Muslim Brotherhood, the biggest and most organised opposition party in Jordan.

In Istanbul, demonstrators held prayers for Cherif and Said Kouachi, the two gunmen who attacked the French publication, killing 12 people.

Some protesters held a poster showing the late al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden and shouted "God is great!".

In Iran, the Leader of Tehran's Friday Prayer has called the publication of Prophet Muhammad's cartoon on the cover of Charlie Hebdo a shocking "crime" and "blasphemy".

Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahedi Kermani lashed out at those who defend the caricature as supporting freedom.

He went on to thank God that the Western countries have started to be hit back by "terrorists".

He said the Islamic State group was initially supported and fostered by Western countries.

His worshippers chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" before taking to the streets to march against Charlie Hebdo.

Muslims believe their faith forbids depictions of the Prophet in any way.

Police stopped trucks leaving a pro-secular newspaper's printing centre and checked the paper's content on Wednesday after it decided to print a selection of Charlie Hebdo caricatures.

The paper printed a four-page selection of cartoons and articles in a show of solidarity with the French satirical weekly, Charlie Hebdo.

Cumhuriyet newspaper said police allowed distribution to proceed after thinking that the French newspaper's latest cover featuring the prophet wasn't published.

But two Cumhuriyet columnists used small, black-and-white images of the cover as their column headers in Wednesday's issue.

It wasn't immediately clear if the columnists' use of the cover image escaped the attention of police.

"While preparing this selection, we respected societies' freedoms of faith and religious sensitivities," Cumhuriyet editor-in-chief Utku Cakirozer said in a statement.

"There may have been some (people) who were worried that this would be an issue that would belittle religious beliefs... But I believe that people won't think that way when they see today's issue," Cakirozer later told The Associated Press in an interview.

On the two columnists' decision to use images of the cover in their columns, Cakirozer said: "That was the personal choice of our writers."

Police intensified security outside Cumhuriyet's headquarters and printing centre as a precaution.

Small groups of pro-Islamic demonstrators protested Cumhuriyet in Ankara and in the central city of Konya, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

A Turkish court on Wednesday ordered the telecommunications authority to ban access to websites showing Charlie Hebdo's front cover with the image of the Prophet Muhammad, a state-run news agency said.

The Anadolu Agency said the ban, which would block access to the websites in Turkey, was ordered by a court in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir, according to the Dogan news agency.

The decision came from the court, because a lawyer in Diyarbakir filed a petition saying the websites were a danger to "public order."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that her country stood in solidarity with France following last week's attacks in Paris.

In an address to the German parliament, Merkel called on Islamic faith leaders to address the question of how "a murderer who kills in the name of Islam has nothing to do with Islam."

She said the German constitution and law protected the right of Muslims to practice their religion freely, but that the German state would continue to fight any form of Islamist violence.

Merkel also said that there was no place for discrimination against Jews in Germany and that Judaism was of Germany's culture and identity.

She was speaking during a session in which members of parliament held a minute of silence to remember the victims of the attack at the office of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket in Paris.

Germany is part of a US-led military coalition that has launched an air campaign against Islamic State group militants in Iraq and Syria in August 2014.
