WORLD REACTIONS TO THE LATEST EDITION OF CHARLIE HEBDO

People around the world reacted to the latest edition of French weekly Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday, a week after gunmen stormed the newspapers officers killing twelve people.

Charlie Hebdo defiantly released its latest issue with a caricature of the Prophet Mohammed on the cover, with copies selling out before dawn across Paris.

Italian daily "Il Fatto Quotidiano" distributed Charlie Hebdo's latest edition in Italy, holding a ceremony in Rome's city hall, honoring freedom of expression and inter-religious dialogue.

The event was attended by some of Italy's most prominent cartoonists, representatives of Muslim groups and the French ambassador in Rome, Catherine Colonna.

In the Filipino capital, Manila, the French community gathered to honour the victims of last week's attacks.

In Lebanon, the magazine's latest cover was widely condemned by religious leaders and everyday people.

Lebanese Mufti spokesman Sheikh Khaldoon Oraymet said the latest edition was a "provocation" to Muslims around the world.

Earlier on Wednesday, Yemen's al-Qaida branch confirmed it carried out last week's deadly assaults to avenge cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, as it called for unity among jihadi ranks and vowed more attacks on the West.

Thousands of Muslims in Pakistan and Afghanistan staged protests against France on Sunday, denouncing the French weekly Charlie Hebdo for publishing controversial images of the Prophet Muhammad.

In the Pakistani city of Karachi, some protesters burned a photograph and an effigy of French President Francois Hollande.

Others marched towards toward the French Consulate, demanding punishment for those who published the caricatures of their Prophet.

Protesters chanted slogans and held banners reading "We are ready to give our lives for the respect of the Prophet Muhammad".

A similar protest was held in Lahore, where angry demonstrators chanted slogans against Charlie Hebdo.

The protest was organised by Jamaat-Ud-Dawa, a controversial Islamic group in Pakistan.

The United Nations considers Jamaat-Ud-Dawa to be a front group for Lashkar-e-Taiba, the militant organisation blamed in the Mumbai attacks of 2008, a charge which the group denies.

Protesters chanted slogans demanding the death of those who committed blasphemy against the Prophet.

In Afghanistan, angry Muslim students condemned the French weekly for publishing the cartoons and called for the French Embassy in Kabul to be shut down.

Muslims believe their faith forbids depictions of the Prophet in any way.

Several hundred Afghans burnt the French flag as they chanted "Death to France" at a rally in the Afghan city of Jalalabad on Monday.

The protesters were demonstrating against the the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's latest publication of a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad, which devout Muslims deem an insult to Islam.

The protesters, mostly young Afghan men, also demanded the French Embassy in Kabul be shut down and that the French government apologise to Muslims.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that her country stood in solidarity with France following last week's attacks in Paris.

In an address to the German parliament, Merkel called on Islamic faith leaders to address the question of how "a murderer who kills in the name of Islam has nothing to do with Islam."

She said the German constitution and law protected the right of Muslims to practice their religion freely, but that the German state would continue to fight any form of Islamist violence.

Merkel also said that there was no place for discrimination against Jews in Germany and that Judaism was of Germany's culture and identity.

She was speaking during a session in which members of parliament held a minute of silence to remember the victims of the attack at the office of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket in Paris.

Germany is part of a US-led military coalition that has launched an air campaign against Islamic State group militants in Iraq and Syria in August 2014.

The French Ambassador to Argentina visited a mosque in Buenos Aires on Friday where Muslim community members dedicated a prayer to victims of the attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Jean-Michel Casa, who is of Moroccan origin, was invited as a special guest to the ceremony, which was held by the Islamic Centre of the Argentine Republic.

Casa spoke with Muslim community members and leaders, who he said rejected "all acts of violence committed in the name of religion".

About 100 people, including followers of other religions, attended the ceremony.

"In this day we, Muslims, want to strongly condemn, not only with words, but with our prayer, all kinds of terrorism, not only what happened in the newsroom in Paris," said Anibal Bachir Bakir, Vice-President of the Islamic Centre of the Argentine Republic), who attended the prayers.

The Muslim community in Argentina is made up of about 500,000 people.

The majority are descendants of Lebanese people of Syrian origin, many of them arriving in Argentina between 1900 and 1920.

French-born Muslim Sadeq Mustafa, who participated in Friday's prayers, said that as a Muslim he is treated better in Buenos Aires than in France.

"I walk down the street (in Argentina) without problems, Jews, Christians, there is no problem such as in France where it's a little more complicated. If you're Muslim in France. People look badly upon you, (they think) if you are a Muslim then you are a terrorist," he said.

Thousands of Muslims in Afghanistan and Pakistan protested against French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo on Friday.

The protesters accused Charlie Hebdo's publishers of blasphemy and called for the French government to apologise after the newspaper published cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

The Afghan demonstrations in the capital, Kabul, and the western city of Herat took place after Friday prayers.

Different Pakistani political, religious and social organisations also protested against the caricatures.

An attack on Charlie Hebdo's Paris office on 7 January killed 12 people.

Many across the Muslim world have protested against the satirical weekly's first issue after the attack, which shows a drawing of a tearful Prophet Muhammad holding a sign saying "Je suis Charlie (I am Charlie, a solidarity slogan following the attack)".

Protesters in Yemen are taking to the streets in anger - following the latest publication of the French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo.

The magazine's new issue depicts the Prophet Muhammad on its cover.

Some see the cartoon as a defiant expression of free speech. But in Yemen's capital, protesters have marched to the French Embassy, saying the cartoon is an attack on their religion.

STORYLINE:

Outside the French Embassy in Sanaa, protesters are outraged at the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in the latest edition of Charlie Hebdo.

"Stop this drawing!" they chant, waving banners denouncing insults to their prophet.

A police vehicle races by carrying reinforcements to secure the embassy.

"The Arab and Islamic world must take steps to try to change this condemnation into action and deeds, and cut ties. If Arab and Muslim countries really loved the Prophet, peace be upon him, they would cut ties with France," says religious scholar, Abdel Salam al-Wajih.

This latest edition of Charlie Hebdo is the first published since the 7 January attack on its headquarters that left 12 dead.

Muslim religious tradition generally prohibits depictions of Muhammad, out of respect for him and to discourage idolatry.

Many Muslims, like protester Muhammed Ali, find even favourable images of the Prophet deeply offensive.

"Today we marched to the French Embassy to say 'no' to insulting God's Prophet," he says.

"The people will not be silent and these crowds show that. We say to the Jews and the French, get out of our land."

However, there are others who do not partake in the harsh condemnation of the magazine.

Last week a handful of activists were prevented by security forces from expressing support for Charlie Hebdo in front of the French Embassy.

The protests come as Yemen's US-backed leadership faces a serious threat as government troops clash with Shiite rebels near the presidential palace and a key military base.

The militants have seized control of state media in fierce fighting that marks the biggest challenge yet to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi by the rebels, known as Houthis, who swept down from their northern strongholds last year and captured the capital in September.

The violence threatens to undermine efforts by the US and its allies to battle al-Qaida's Yemeni affiliate, which claims responsibility for the attack on Charlie Hebdo.

Pakistani protesters took to the streets on Thursday as lawmakers approved a resolution condemning the publication of the images of Islam's prophet in the satirical French magazine attacked by extremists last week.

Like many other Muslim nations, Pakistan has condemned the deadly rampage at the Paris office of the Charlie Hebdo weekly, which killed 12 people, including editors, cartoonists and two policemen.

But it has also condemned the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, which many Muslims consider sacrilege.

In Lahore supporters of the Sunni Tahreek group marched with a banner reading "The Sketch Makers Must Be Hanged Immediately" and placards decrying Charlie Hebdo and its staff.

"We condemn blasphemy and we condemn the sketch makers. We condemn blasphemers, we curse Charlie Hebdo, we curse European Union," said local group leader, Asif Ashraf Jalali.

In Islamabad, lawmakers marched outside Parliament House after the vote to protest against the latest images published by Charlie Hebdo magazine.

Some chanted, "In the name of the Prophet, we're ready to die".

Religious Affairs Minister Sardar Mohammad Yousuf said the lawmakers unanimously approved the resolution condemning the publication of the images.

He did not say how many legislators were present, but said lawmakers from all political parties backed the measure.

The resolution also condemned violence under any pretext.

The minister said the resolution would be sent to all foreign missions in the country and to the United Nations to register the protest against the cartoons.

Islam generally forbids depictions of the Prophet Muhammad, and many in Muslim-majority Pakistan view the cartoons as blasphemous.

The magazine has invoked freedom of speech to defend its publications of cartoons that many Muslims and non-Muslims alike consider offensive.

Around 100 people demonstrated in the Afghan capital Kabul on Thursday against the publishers of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, accusing them of blasphemy.

Many of the protesters carried banners emblazoned with a red heart and the name of the Prophet Muhammad, as they marched near the French Embassy.

Some in the crowd chanted "We love Muhammad."

Protest organiser Abdul Saboor Fakhri said the demonstrators want the Afghan government to close the French Embassy and expel the ambassador to ease the anger that he says Afghans feel toward the magazine.

"We are ready for any kind of sacrifices in defending our prophet and faith," he added.

There have been small, sporadic protests in Afghanistan since the publication of a special edition of Charlie Hebdo in the wake of an attack on the magazine's Paris office.

The French right wing leader Marine Le Pen called for a debate on the rise of Islamic fundamentalism in France on Friday, saying steps need to be taken to "ensure the security of the country and our people."

Speaking after a meeting with French President Francois Hollande, Le Pen went on to say that a change in French foreign policy was needed to sever ties with countries that "support and finance Islamic fundamentalism."

Hundreds of French security forces surrounded a printing house near Charles de Gaulle airport where two heavily armed brothers suspected of attacking a satirical newspaper had taken refuge on Friday.

Cherif and Said Kouachi are the chief suspects in an assault on the offices of Charlie Hebdo which left 12 people dead, including the chief editor and cartoonist who had been under armed guard following the publication of caricatures depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

A memorial ceremony for the victims of the attack is being planned for Sunday, to be held in Paris.

Le Pen, who has herself been the target of the satirical newspaper's front pages in the past, has not been formally invited to the memorial.

She said on Friday that she would not attend.
