A hard-line cleric in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday led a memorial service for the two brothers who attacked the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris, praising their assault.

Pir Mohammad Chishti, Provincial Chief of Pakistan Awami Tahreek and a cleric who runs a religious seminary in the city

of Peshawar, said the attacks were done on behalf of all Muslim communities.

"Those young men who sacrificed their lives and sent the blasphemers to the hell, we salute them all for their martyrdom," he said.

About 40 people attended, with some carrying banners condemning the magazine.

They chanted praise for Said and Cherif Kouachi, who massacred 12 people in the newspaper attack last week and were later killed by police.

Charlie Hebdo often lampooned organised religions, including Islam by drawing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

Such depictions are considered blasphemous by many Muslims.

STORYLINE

Thousands of Muslims in Jordan, Turkey and Iran demonstrated on Friday against the French weekly Charlie Hebdo for publishing controversial images of the Prophet Muhammad.

Clashes erupted between thousands of anti-Charlie Hebdo protesters and security forces in Amman after noon prayers.

Police used batons to disperse the crowds.

Several activists were arrested for trying to march towards the French embassy to protest against the publication of what they consider to be an offensive cartoon of Prophet Mohammad by the French magazine.

About 2,000 people chanted slogans against Charlie Hebdo as well as the Jordanian regime for taking part in the Paris unity march last week.

The protest was organised by the Muslim Brotherhood, the biggest and most organised opposition party in Jordan.

In Istanbul, demonstrators held prayers for Cherif and Said Kouachi, the two gunmen who attacked the French publication, killing 12 people.

Some protesters held a poster showing the late al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden and shouted "God is great!".

In Iran, the Leader of Tehran's Friday Prayer has called the publication of Prophet Muhammad's cartoon on the cover of Charlie Hebdo a shocking "crime" and "blasphemy".

Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahedi Kermani lashed out at those who defend the caricature as supporting freedom.

He went on to thank God that the Western countries have started to be hit back by "terrorists".

He said the Islamic State group was initially supported and fostered by Western countries.

His worshippers chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" before taking to the streets to march against Charlie Hebdo.

Muslims believe their faith forbids depictions of the Prophet in any way.

WORLD REACTIONS TO THE LATEST EDITION OF CHARLIE HEBDO

People around the world reacted to the latest edition of French weekly Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday, a week after gunmen stormed the newspapers officers killing twelve people.

Charlie Hebdo defiantly released its latest issue with a caricature of the Prophet Mohammed on the cover, with copies selling out before dawn across Paris.

Italian daily "Il Fatto Quotidiano" distributed Charlie Hebdo's latest edition in Italy, holding a ceremony in Rome's city hall, honoring freedom of expression and inter-religious dialogue.

The event was attended by some of Italy's most prominent cartoonists, representatives of Muslim groups and the French ambassador in Rome, Catherine Colonna.

In the Filipino capital, Manila, the French community gathered to honour the victims of last week's attacks.

In Lebanon, the magazine's latest cover was widely condemned by religious leaders and everyday people.

Lebanese Mufti spokesman Sheikh Khaldoon Oraymet said the latest edition was a "provocation" to Muslims around the world.

Earlier on Wednesday, Yemen's al-Qaida branch confirmed it carried out last week's deadly assaults to avenge cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, as it called for unity among jihadi ranks and vowed more attacks on the West.

Police stopped trucks leaving a pro-secular newspaper's printing centre and checked the paper's content on Wednesday after it decided to print a selection of Charlie Hebdo caricatures.

The paper printed a four-page selection of cartoons and articles in a show of solidarity with the French satirical weekly, Charlie Hebdo.

Cumhuriyet newspaper said police allowed distribution to proceed after thinking that the French newspaper's latest cover featuring the prophet wasn't published.

But two Cumhuriyet columnists used small, black-and-white images of the cover as their column headers in Wednesday's issue.

It wasn't immediately clear if the columnists' use of the cover image escaped the attention of police.

"While preparing this selection, we respected societies' freedoms of faith and religious sensitivities," Cumhuriyet editor-in-chief Utku Cakirozer said in a statement.

"There may have been some (people) who were worried that this would be an issue that would belittle religious beliefs... But I believe that people won't think that way when they see today's issue," Cakirozer later told The Associated Press in an interview.

On the two columnists' decision to use images of the cover in their columns, Cakirozer said: "That was the personal choice of our writers."

Police intensified security outside Cumhuriyet's headquarters and printing centre as a precaution.

Small groups of pro-Islamic demonstrators protested Cumhuriyet in Ankara and in the central city of Konya, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

A Turkish court on Wednesday ordered the telecommunications authority to ban access to websites showing Charlie Hebdo's front cover with the image of the Prophet Muhammad, a state-run news agency said.

The Anadolu Agency said the ban, which would block access to the websites in Turkey, was ordered by a court in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir, according to the Dogan news agency.

The decision came from the court, because a lawyer in Diyarbakir filed a petition saying the websites were a danger to "public order."

The protesters accused Charlie Hebdo's publishers of blasphemy and called for the French government to apologise after the newspaper published cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

The Afghan demonstrations in the capital, Kabul, and the western city of Herat took place after Friday prayers.

Different Pakistani political, religious and social organisations also protested against the caricatures.

Protesters in Yemen are taking to the streets in anger - following the latest publication of the French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo.

The magazine's new issue depicts the Prophet Muhammad on its cover.

Some see the cartoon as a defiant expression of free speech. But in Yemen's capital, protesters have marched to the French Embassy, saying the cartoon is an attack on their religion.

STORYLINE:

Outside the French Embassy in Sanaa, protesters are outraged at the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in the latest edition of Charlie Hebdo.

"Stop this drawing!" they chant, waving banners denouncing insults to their prophet.

A police vehicle races by carrying reinforcements to secure the embassy.

"The Arab and Islamic world must take steps to try to change this condemnation into action and deeds, and cut ties. If Arab and Muslim countries really loved the Prophet, peace be upon him, they would cut ties with France," says religious scholar, Abdel Salam al-Wajih.

This latest edition of Charlie Hebdo is the first published since the 7 January attack on its headquarters that left 12 dead.

Muslim religious tradition generally prohibits depictions of Muhammad, out of respect for him and to discourage idolatry.

Many Muslims, like protester Muhammed Ali, find even favourable images of the Prophet deeply offensive.

"Today we marched to the French Embassy to say 'no' to insulting God's Prophet," he says.

"The people will not be silent and these crowds show that. We say to the Jews and the French, get out of our land."

However, there are others who do not partake in the harsh condemnation of the magazine.

Last week a handful of activists were prevented by security forces from expressing support for Charlie Hebdo in front of the French Embassy.

The protests come as Yemen's US-backed leadership faces a serious threat as government troops clash with Shiite rebels near the presidential palace and a key military base.

The militants have seized control of state media in fierce fighting that marks the biggest challenge yet to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi by the rebels, known as Houthis, who swept down from their northern strongholds last year and captured the capital in September.

The violence threatens to undermine efforts by the US and its allies to battle al-Qaida's Yemeni affiliate, which claims responsibility for the attack on Charlie Hebdo.

Pakistani protesters took to the streets on Thursday as lawmakers approved a resolution condemning the publication of the images of Islam's prophet in the satirical French magazine attacked by extremists last week.

Like many other Muslim nations, Pakistan has condemned the deadly rampage at the Paris office of the Charlie Hebdo weekly, which killed 12 people, including editors, cartoonists and two policemen.

But it has also condemned the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, which many Muslims consider sacrilege.

In Lahore supporters of the Sunni Tahreek group marched with a banner reading "The Sketch Makers Must Be Hanged Immediately" and placards decrying Charlie Hebdo and its staff.

"We condemn blasphemy and we condemn the sketch makers. We condemn blasphemers, we curse Charlie Hebdo, we curse European Union," said local group leader, Asif Ashraf Jalali.

In Islamabad, lawmakers marched outside Parliament House after the vote to protest against the latest images published by Charlie Hebdo magazine.

Some chanted, "In the name of the Prophet, we're ready to die".

Religious Affairs Minister Sardar Mohammad Yousuf said the lawmakers unanimously approved the resolution condemning the publication of the images.

He did not say how many legislators were present, but said lawmakers from all political parties backed the measure.

The resolution also condemned violence under any pretext.

The minister said the resolution would be sent to all foreign missions in the country and to the United Nations to register the protest against the cartoons.

Islam generally forbids depictions of the Prophet Muhammad, and many in Muslim-majority Pakistan view the cartoons as blasphemous.

The magazine has invoked freedom of speech to defend its publications of cartoons that many Muslims and non-Muslims alike consider offensive.

Thousands of Palestinian demonstrators took to the streets of the West Bank city of Hebron on Saturday, rallying against French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The demonstrators joined many others across the Muslim world who have staged protests against Charlie Hebdo's cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

According to mainstream Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the Prophet Muhammad - even a respectful one - is considered blasphemous.

An attack on Charlie Hebdo's Paris office on 7 January killed 12 people.

Thousands of Muslims in Pakistan and Afghanistan staged protests against France on Sunday, denouncing the French weekly Charlie Hebdo for publishing controversial images of the Prophet Muhammad.

In the Pakistani city of Karachi, some protesters burned a photograph and an effigy of French President Francois Hollande.

Others marched towards toward the French Consulate, demanding punishment for those who published the caricatures of their Prophet.

Protesters chanted slogans and held banners reading "We are ready to give our lives for the respect of the Prophet Muhammad".

A similar protest was held in Lahore, where angry demonstrators chanted slogans against Charlie Hebdo.

The protest was organised by Jamaat-Ud-Dawa, a controversial Islamic group in Pakistan.

The United Nations considers Jamaat-Ud-Dawa to be a front group for Lashkar-e-Taiba, the militant organisation blamed in the Mumbai attacks of 2008, a charge which the group denies.

One of Egypt's top Islamic authorities on Wednesday said he was sorry to see the publication of a new cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad on the cover of the latest edition of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The latest issue came a week after the assault by two masked gunmen at Charlie Hebdo's offices, which killed 12 people, including many of the newspaper's editorial staff and two police officers.

Speaking to journalists in Cairo, the Secretary-General of Al-Azhar's Council of Senior Scholars called for all Muslims to ignore the "provocation."

"We do not accept provocation to our religion or to our prophet, this act is denounced," said Abbas Shouman.

"But we are still calling on all Muslims to not react negatively and to ignore it completely."

Al-Azhar, the Sunni world's most prestigious institute, had earlier condemned the Paris attacks, saying violence in the name of religion is unacceptable.

The institute had also warned against publishing the cartoon on the latest issue, saying the image would only provoke Muslims.

Three million copies of Charlie Hebdo's latest issue were being delivered across France on Wednesday.

In Paris, the magazine sold out before dawn, with scuffles at kiosks over dwindling copies of the paper.

Scores of people protested in Istanbul on Thursday against Cumhuriyet newspaper, which published a selection of cartoons from the latest issue of French satirical newspaper, Charlie Hebdo.

Protesters chanted "God is great," and called for those who published the caricatures of Prophet Mohammed to be punished.

Cumhuriyet newspaper, a secular Turkish daily, printed the four-page selection of cartoons and articles on Wednesday.

They included caricatures of Pope Francis and French President Francois Hollande - but left out cartoons likely to offend Muslims.

However, two Cumhuriyet columnists, Ceyda Karan and Hikmet Cetinkaya, used small, black-and-white images of the new Charlie Hebdo cover as their column headers.

Journalist Ahmet Ozkose, present at Thursday's protest, accused the pair of behaving "viciously and immorally" for including the small, black-and-white images.

Around 100 people demonstrated in the Afghan capital Kabul on Thursday against the publishers of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, accusing them of blasphemy.

Thousands of people gathered in the southern Russian region of Chechnya on Monday to rally against French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Protesters marched through the streets of downtown Grozny, the capital of the predominantly Muslim region, released balloons and carried posters that read "We love Prophet Muhammad".

Chechen leader Ramzan Karyrov told protesters that "Muslim people won't allow (ourselves) to be used for destabilising the situation in the country", referring to Russia.

A police spokesman told Interfax news agency that 800,000 people attended the protest on Monday, although those numbers were impossible to verify.

Russia, which has a large and restive Muslim population and waged two devastating wars against Chechen separatists in the 1990s, offered its condolences to France after the Paris attacks earlier this month.

It has warned Russian publications, however, against reprinting any Charlie Hebdo cartoons that feature the Prophet Mohammed.

Palestinian Salafists, a fundamentalist Islamic movement, protested outside the French Cultural Centre in Gaza on Monday, in anger at caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad published in the satirical French weekly Charlie Hebdo.

Protesters set fire to French flags and carried banners condemning the use of the images of the Prophet Muhammad.

One protester held a sign in support of the recent attacks in Paris, reading: "Amedy Coulibaly (the third gunman in the Paris attacks) took the revenge of the Prophet Muhammad".

Security forces were called in to control the crowd, and later could be seen standing guard outside the French Cultural Centre.

Charlie Hebdo's latest issue, which depicts a cartoon image of the Prophet Muhammad crying, has set of a groundswell of popular antagonism across Europe against radical Islam, and protests against the images across the Muslim world that have underscored vast cultural differences.

According to mainstream Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the Prophet Muhammad - even a respectful one - is considered blasphemous.

One of the gunmen who attacked the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo was buried on Saturday in his hometown of Gennevilliers, just north of Paris.

Cherif Kouachi was buried in the Muslim quarter of the town's cemetery in an anonymous grave, according to the director of the mayor's cabinet.

The mosque of Gennevilliers had expected the burial to take place quietly, away from the public eye, but was not involved in the traditional ritual ceremony.

On Sunday, one of the mosque's co-founders, Abdel Baki Attaf, said he believed the burial had been carried out "discreetly" in order to maintain a calm atmosphere.

Gennevilliers, a traditionally working class town on the close outskirts of Paris, has one of France's oldest Muslim communities.

Meanwhile, French police released three women from questioning but continued on Sunday to interrogate nine other people detained in an anti-terror sweep connected to last week's attacks in Paris that have put Europe on high alert.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that her country stood in solidarity with France following last week's attacks in Paris.

In an address to the German parliament, Merkel called on Islamic faith leaders to address the question of how "a murderer who kills in the name of Islam has nothing to do with Islam."

She said the German constitution and law protected the right of Muslims to practice their religion freely, but that the German state would continue to fight any form of Islamist violence.

Merkel also said that there was no place for discrimination against Jews in Germany and that Judaism was of Germany's culture and identity.

She was speaking during a session in which members of parliament held a minute of silence to remember the victims of the attack at the office of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket in Paris.

Germany is part of a US-led military coalition that has launched an air campaign against Islamic State group militants in Iraq and Syria in August 2014.
