AMERICAN STARS AND FOREIGN FILM NOMINEES SUPPORT CHARLIE HEBDO AT THE GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS

"Je Suis Charlie" reverberated throughout Sunday's Golden Globes, from signs held aloft on the red carpet by the likes of Helen Mirren and Diane Kruger to Cecil B. DeMille winner George Clooney, who mentioned the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo during his speech.

Israeli sister-and-brother duo and best foreign language nominees Ronit and Shlomi Elkabetz wore stickers showing their support of France and free speech after a three-day terror spree around Paris that killed 17 people.

"You know France is, our film is half French, half Israeli. France is our partner. France is a great platform for artists and opinion makers from all over the world to come and to make their voice heard. We are proud of them. It's important for us to keep France like this and for us to support, to say that we are here," said Shlomi Elkabetz.

Their film, "Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem," follows an Israel woman attempting to divorce her husband.

"France and each country in the world want to live with freedom without fear and that's what we want to say," said Ronit on the red carpet.

"Gett" was up against Pawel Pawlikowski's "Ida," a reflective movie about the legacy of the Holocaust in communist Poland.

The film has unexpectedly been showered with international awards since its release in 2013.

"It's going down really well everywhere, but people react in a different way," said Polish-British director Pawlikowski. "There are some universal cords that it struck, strikes. So you know in South Korea they reacted differently and in Spain, Finland, differently in the states, but always people engaging with it and always kind of getting really, falling in love with this film, which is wonderful. And in America I thought because you have a much more commercial cinema here so I thought that black-and-white film with the camera that doesn't move and is in Polish with subtitles, it's not going to break the bank. And it hasn't broke in the bank, but it's been really, really well."

Estonian-Georgian entry "Tangerines (Mandariinid)" has also found much success among American audiences, exceeding producer Ivo Felt's expectations.

"Maybe it's a little bit more (than expected). You know we come from Nordic countries and we take it very easy. So when somebody really shows emotions in this way as American audiences with 'Tangerines' it's very beautiful to see," he said.

Ruben Ostlund, director of Swedish drama nominee "Force Majeure (Turist)," discussed how Americans have had a completely different take on his film.

"I think that the humor, you have catched up the humor in a much better way. In some screenings in Europe people are saying 'oh it's a horrifying movie. I can't stand watching it.' But here everybody talks about it as a comedy and I like that," said Ostlund.

The evening's big winner was Russia's "Leviathan," which took the Globe for best foreign language film.

Before the awards show director Andrey Zvyagintsev described the project as a massive group effort.

"We've been working really hard. We've been working for two years. And there were a lot of really talented people brought together to make it happen," said Zvyagintsev.

He also thanked producer Alexander Rodnyansky for helping get the film "to the wider audience.'"

The drama puts a modern spin on the Book of Job through the story of a man who struggles against a corrupt mayor.
