Tens of thousands of Tunisians attended a march in their country's capital, Tunis, on Sunday to denounce extremist violence following the attack on the National Bardo Museum.

Waving Tunisian flags and carrying banners reading "Together against terrorism", the demonstrators marched through central Tunis, by the site of the deadly March 18 shooting that claimed twenty-two lives of mainly foreign tourists, as well as two gunmen.

French President Francois Hollande, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and several foreign ministers and legislators from other countries are joining an anti-terrorism ceremony in Tunis after the march.

The Tunisian government called on all major political parties to join the march from the seat of government at Bab Es-Saadoun to the museum.

Speaking on Sunday morning before heading to Tunisia, Hollande said it was important to show solidarity with Tunisia, which became the latest victim of extremist violence and was the country that led the Arab Spring revolt across the region.

As a result of the 2011 revolution, Tunisia built a democratic system, which was deeply shaken by the museum attack, for which the Islamic State group claimed responsibility.

STORYLINE

Thousands of Muslims in Jordan, Turkey and Iran demonstrated on Friday against the French weekly Charlie Hebdo for publishing controversial images of the Prophet Muhammad.

Clashes erupted between thousands of anti-Charlie Hebdo protesters and security forces in Amman after noon prayers.

Police used batons to disperse the crowds.

Several activists were arrested for trying to march towards the French embassy to protest against the publication of what they consider to be an offensive cartoon of Prophet Mohammad by the French magazine.

About 2,000 people chanted slogans against Charlie Hebdo as well as the Jordanian regime for taking part in the Paris unity march last week.

The protest was organised by the Muslim Brotherhood, the biggest and most organised opposition party in Jordan.

In Istanbul, demonstrators held prayers for Cherif and Said Kouachi, the two gunmen who attacked the French publication, killing 12 people.

Some protesters held a poster showing the late al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden and shouted "God is great!".

In Iran, the Leader of Tehran's Friday Prayer has called the publication of Prophet Muhammad's cartoon on the cover of Charlie Hebdo a shocking "crime" and "blasphemy".

Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahedi Kermani lashed out at those who defend the caricature as supporting freedom.

He went on to thank God that the Western countries have started to be hit back by "terrorists".

He said the Islamic State group was initially supported and fostered by Western countries.

His worshippers chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" before taking to the streets to march against Charlie Hebdo.

Muslims believe their faith forbids depictions of the Prophet in any way.

Hundreds of Iranians demonstrated outside the French Embassy in Tehran on Monday over the cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad on the latest issue of the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.

The protesters chanted "Death to France" and burnt American and Israeli flags.

Some demanded the French Embassy be closed and the ambassador expelled.

State TV said similar gatherings were held in other Iranian cities.

Conservative lawmaker Ahmad Tavakoli told the demonstrators that the attack on Charlie Hebdo was a result of the West's wrongdoings against Muslims.

The French embassy was heavily guarded by Iranian riot police, who pushed back protesters trying to reach the building.

Thousands of people gathered in the Pakistani cities of Lahore and Karachi on Sunday to protest against cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that were published in French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

In the eastern city of Lahore, a huge crowd formed at a rally organised by the Islamic political organisation Jamaat-e-Islami.

Protesters waved placards reading "Stop blasphemy" and "We are all Cherif Kouachi", referring to one of the brothers who killed 12 people at the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris on 7 January.

Liaquat Baloch, a senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, told the crowd that a "strict law needs to be made at international level to stop blasphemy".

Jamaat-e-Islami also held a rally in Karachi, which saw thousands of people chanting their support for the Prophet Muhammad.

Some protesters tore apart the national flags of France, the United States and Denmark.

Sirajul Haq, central chief of Jamaat-e-Islami, said the protests would continue "until the time France apologises, until the UN makes a law that guarantees respect and honour for all prophets".

"This is not the last rally, it is the beginning of a massive movement," he added.

The first issue of Charlie Hebdo to come out after the Paris attack depicted a cartoon image of the Prophet Muhammad crying.

It set a groundswell of popular antagonism across Europe against radical Islam, and protests against the images across the Muslim world that have underscored vast cultural differences.

Protesters in Yemen are taking to the streets in anger - following the latest publication of the French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo.

The magazine's new issue depicts the Prophet Muhammad on its cover.

Some see the cartoon as a defiant expression of free speech. But in Yemen's capital, protesters have marched to the French Embassy, saying the cartoon is an attack on their religion.

STORYLINE:

Outside the French Embassy in Sanaa, protesters are outraged at the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in the latest edition of Charlie Hebdo.

"Stop this drawing!" they chant, waving banners denouncing insults to their prophet.

"The Arab and Islamic world must take steps to try to change this condemnation into action and deeds, and cut ties. If Arab and Muslim countries really loved the Prophet, peace be upon him, they would cut ties with France," says religious scholar, Abdel Salam al-Wajih.

This latest edition of Charlie Hebdo is the first published since the 7 January attack on its headquarters that left 12 dead.

Muslim religious tradition generally prohibits depictions of Muhammad, out of respect for him and to discourage idolatry.

Many Muslims, like protester Muhammed Ali, find even favourable images of the Prophet deeply offensive.

"Today we marched to the French Embassy to say 'no' to insulting God's Prophet," he says.

"The people will not be silent and these crowds show that. We say to the Jews and the French, get out of our land."

However, there are others who do not partake in the harsh condemnation of the magazine.

Last week a handful of activists were prevented by security forces from expressing support for Charlie Hebdo in front of the French Embassy.

The protests come as Yemen's US-backed leadership faces a serious threat as government troops clash with Shiite rebels near the presidential palace and a key military base.

The militants have seized control of state media in fierce fighting that marks the biggest challenge yet to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi by the rebels, known as Houthis, who swept down from their northern strongholds last year and captured the capital in September.

The violence threatens to undermine efforts by the US and its allies to battle al-Qaida's Yemeni affiliate, which claims responsibility for the attack on Charlie Hebdo.

Pakistani protesters took to the streets on Thursday as lawmakers approved a resolution condemning the publication of the images of Islam's prophet in the satirical French magazine attacked by extremists last week.

Like many other Muslim nations, Pakistan has condemned the deadly rampage at the Paris office of the Charlie Hebdo weekly, which killed 12 people, including editors, cartoonists and two policemen.

But it has also condemned the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, which many Muslims consider sacrilege.

In Lahore supporters of the Sunni Tahreek group marched with a banner reading "The Sketch Makers Must Be Hanged Immediately" and placards decrying Charlie Hebdo and its staff.

"We condemn blasphemy and we condemn the sketch makers. We condemn blasphemers, we curse Charlie Hebdo, we curse European Union," said local group leader, Asif Ashraf Jalali.

In Islamabad, lawmakers marched outside Parliament House after the vote to protest against the latest images published by Charlie Hebdo magazine.

Some chanted, "In the name of the Prophet, we're ready to die".

Religious Affairs Minister Sardar Mohammad Yousuf said the lawmakers unanimously approved the resolution condemning the publication of the images.

He did not say how many legislators were present, but said lawmakers from all political parties backed the measure.

The resolution also condemned violence under any pretext.

The minister said the resolution would be sent to all foreign missions in the country and to the United Nations to register the protest against the cartoons.

Islam generally forbids depictions of the Prophet Muhammad, and many in Muslim-majority Pakistan view the cartoons as blasphemous.

The magazine has invoked freedom of speech to defend its publications of cartoons that many Muslims and non-Muslims alike consider offensive.

Thousands of Palestinian demonstrators took to the streets of the West Bank city of Hebron on Saturday, rallying against French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The demonstrators joined many others across the Muslim world who have staged protests against Charlie Hebdo's cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

According to mainstream Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the Prophet Muhammad - even a respectful one - is considered blasphemous.

An attack on Charlie Hebdo's Paris office on 7 January killed 12 people.

Charlie Hebdo's latest issue, which came out after the attack and depicts a cartoon image of the Prophet Muhammad crying, has set of a groundswell of popular antagonism across Europe against radical Islam, and protests against the images across the Muslim world that have underscored vast cultural differences.

Police in Indian administered Kashmir fired tear gas to disperse protesters on Friday who were demonstrating against the publication of a caricature of Prophet Muhammad in the latest issue of the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.

Protests broke out after Friday prayers with worshippers carrying placards reading slogans such as "Down with Charlie."

They chanted slogans against Indian rule and in favour of Islam.

Government forces fired warning shots and tear gas to stop the protesters from marching in at least at three places in old parts of Srinagar, while the protesters hurled rocks at them, police said.

Similar protests were also reported from several towns and villages in the disputed Himalayan region.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

Authorities restricted movement of residents in parts of the main city of Srinagar and businesses and shops were closed in a strike called by separatists and religious parties.

Police overnight detained a top pro-independence leader, Mohammed Yasin Malik, who called for the strike and protests against the magazine's latest issue, which shows a drawing of a tearful Prophet Muhammad holding a sign "I am Charlie" in French.

It was published following a January 7 attack on the magazine's Paris office that killed 12 people.

Many Muslims believe their faith forbids depictions of the prophet.

The region has witnessed several protests against the latest cartoon, but Friday's shutdown was the first major reaction in Kashmir since the Paris attacks.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, and both claim it in its entirety since British colonialists left in 1947.

Since 1989, several rebel groups have been fighting to win Kashmir's independence or have the Indian-controlled portion merge with Pakistan.

Thousands of Muslims in Pakistan and Afghanistan staged protests against France on Sunday, denouncing the French weekly Charlie Hebdo for publishing controversial images of the Prophet Muhammad.

In the Pakistani city of Karachi, some protesters burned a photograph and an effigy of French President Francois Hollande.

Others marched towards toward the French Consulate, demanding punishment for those who published the caricatures of their Prophet.

Protesters chanted slogans and held banners reading "We are ready to give our lives for the respect of the Prophet Muhammad".

A similar protest was held in Lahore, where angry demonstrators chanted slogans against Charlie Hebdo.

The protest was organised by Jamaat-Ud-Dawa, a controversial Islamic group in Pakistan.

The United Nations considers Jamaat-Ud-Dawa to be a front group for Lashkar-e-Taiba, the militant organisation blamed in the Mumbai attacks of 2008, a charge which the group denies.

A march in the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir turned violent on Wednesday, as demonstrators clashed with police in the streets of Srinagar.

The march was to commemorate the killing of 50 people by Indian paramilitary forces in 1990, but quickly turned into a protest condemning the French magazine Charlie Hebdo for their controversial cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

Protesters threw stones at police and attacked government institutions, while police responded with tear gas.

Thousands of people gathered in the southern Russian region of Chechnya on Monday to rally against French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Dozens of Lebanese gathered in Beirut on Saturday to condemn the attacks in France and express their solidarity with the French weekly Charlie Hebdo.

Students from the Progressive Socialist Party and the National Liberal Party lit candles in the memory of those who died in the attacks.

Protesters gathered in the centre of Algiers after Friday prayers and chanted slogans like "I am not Charlie, I am Muhammad," and some threw bottles and rocks at security forces, who responded with tear gas.

Footage showed people gathered at Place de la Concorde (formerly known as May 1st Square), with some protesters throwing projectiles at police, minor scuffles, and police dispersing the crowd.

One person appeared being detained by police.

Later, some broke through police barriers and surged toward the parliament building, prompting volleys of tear gas by police and running street battles.

The office of the state airline was torched.

Police did not allow media to film at that point.

Police eventually dispersed the demonstrators by using snow ploughs and tear gas, according to media reports.

It was not clear how many were arrested or hurt in the unrest.

The demonstration, which had a degree of official backing when authorities called for imams to dedicate Friday prayers to the life of the prophet, was unusual for Algiers, where protests have been banned since 2001.

Charlie Hebdo's new issue has a drawing of Muhammad with a tear rolling down his cheek and a placard that reads "Je Suis Charlie" as an act of defiance in the wake of last week's attack at the paper's office in Paris that killed 12 people.

The depiction of the prophet is deemed insulting to many followers of Islam.

Several hundred Afghans burnt the French flag as they chanted "Death to France" at a rally in the Afghan city of Jalalabad on Monday.

The protesters were demonstrating against the the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's latest publication of a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad, which devout Muslims deem an insult to Islam.

The protesters, mostly young Afghan men, also demanded the French Embassy in Kabul be shut down and that the French government apologise to Muslims.

It was the third straight day of protests across Afghanistan since the paper's first issue following the 7 January attack on its headquarters by Islamic extremists that killed 12 people.
