STORYLINE:

US President Mike Pence on Monday visited the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) dividing North and South Korea.

Pence made an unannounced visit to the Demilitarized Zone at the start of his 10-day trip to Asia in a US show of force that allowed the vice president to gaze at North Korean soldiers from afar and stare directly across a border marked by razor wire.

During the visit Pence told reporters that President Donald Trump was hopeful that China would use its "extraordinary levers" to pressure the North to abandon its weapons.

He added that the "era of strategic patience is over" with North Korea, expressing frustration at the unwillingness of the regime to move towards ridding itself of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

The vice president visited a military base near the DMZ, Camp Bonifas, for a briefing with military leaders and to meet with American troops stationed there.

The joint US-South Korean military camp is just outside the 2.5-mile-wide (4-kilometre-wide) DMZ.

US President Donald Trump said Sunday the US and North Korea are in the "final stage of working out" the surprise quick meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the demilitarized zone of the Korean border.

Trump made the remark in an expanded meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and officials of the two countries.

Trump and Moon have since confirmed that Trump will meet Kim at the border later on Sunday.

Trump arrived in South Korea on Saturday for a two-day visit, following his trip to Osaka for the G20 Summit.

The two leaders will hold a joint news conference following the luncheon, and Trump is scheduled to visit the demilitarized zone near the border after leaving the presidential office.

US President Donald Trump addressed members of the US military on Sunday at an American air base in Osan, just south of Seoul, South Korea, before ending his Asia trip and returning to Washington.

Trump recounted the moment when he stepped across the border at the demilitarised zone into North Korea and became the first sitting US president to do so.

He said he and North Korea's Kim Jong Un "had a very productive meeting".

He also said he tried to sell Kim on the prosperity he believes awaits North Korea if it gives up its nuclear programme.

During his remarks to the service members, Trump called up to the stage US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and, Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter and a top White House advisor.

He jokingly called them "beauty and the beast."

They were giving us a great briefing right at the DMZ and they said it was so different before we had the meeting, the big summit in Singapore it was different. It was really hostile. Hundreds of people gathered in central Seoul on Saturday to either welcome or protest US President Donald Trump's visit to South Korea.

Anti-Trump protesters waved banners and posters, and chanted that Trump was unwelcome in South Korea.

Meanwhile pro-Trump protesters marched around central Seoul to call for a stronger US-South Korea alliance.

With regards to a possible meeting at the demilitarised zone between Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un, people on both sides were unsure.

Anti-Trump demonstrator Han Kyeong-jun said although he hoped Trump and Kim meet, if Washington continued its anti-North sanctions then peace on the Korean Peninsula would be difficult to achieve.

Park Taewoo, a pro-Trump protester, said he doubted whether a meeting between the leaders would benefit South Korea and its "security interests".

"President Trump is ahead of the presidential election next year, so he might be trying to show that he is doing well on the Korean Peninsula issues. However, in terms of South Korea's security interest, we are facing a different issue. (Trump meeting Kim Jong Un at the DMZ) will be interesting news for South Korean people, but we should think about if such visit will benefit South Korea for its security interests."

South Koreans on Sunday had mixed reactions to a surprise meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the demilitarised zone at the Korean borders.

Min Jung-won, a 26-year-old graduate student, viewed the North Korea-US meeting as an opportunity for the Korean Peninsula to move closer to achieving peace and reunification.

On the other hand, 65-year-old business owner Choi Young-chul expressed a rather sceptical view, saying that both Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in were trying to take advantage of the meeting at DMZ for their own political interests.

Trump and Kim held a quick meeting at the border village Panmunjom earlier the day.

Trump crossed the military demarcation line at Panmunjom and briefly stepped into the North Korean side of the Joint Security Area.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Saturday the threat of nuclear missile attack by North Korea is accelerating.

In remarks in Seoul with South Korean Defense Minister Song Young-moo at his side, Mattis accused the North of illegal and unnecessary missile and nuclear programs - and vowed to defeat any attack.

Mattis said North Korea engages in "outlaw" behavior and that the U.S. will never accept a nuclear North.

He added that regardless of what the North might try, it is overmatched by the firepower and cohesiveness of the decades-old U.S.-South Korean alliance.

"I cannot imagine a condition under which the United States would accept North Korea as a nuclear power," he said.

As he emphasized throughout his weeklong Asia trip, which included stops in Thailand and the Philippines, Mattis said diplomacy remains the preferred way to deal with the North.

Mattis' comments did not go beyond his recent statements of concern about North Korea, although he appeared to inject a stronger note about the urgency of resolving the crisis.

While he accused the North of "outlaw" behavior, he did not mention that President Donald Trump has ratcheted up his own rhetoric. In August, Trump warned the North not to make any more threats against the United States, and said that if it did, it would be met with "fire and fury like the world has never seen."

Song, the South Korean minister, told the news conference that he and Mattis agreed to further cooperation on strengthening Seoul's defense capabilities, including lifting warhead payload limits on South Korean conventional missiles and supporting the country's acquisition of "most advanced military assets." He offered no specifics and refused to answer when asked whether the discussions included nuclear-powered submarines.

Trump entered office declaring his commitment to solving the North Korea problem, asserting that he would succeed where his predecessors had failed. His administration has sought to increase pressure on Pyongyang through U.N. Security Council sanctions and other diplomatic efforts, but the North hasn't budged from its goal of building a full-fledged nuclear arsenal, including missiles capable of striking the U.S. mainland.

If Trump sticks to his pledge to stop the North from being able to threaten the U.S. with a nuclear attack, something will have to give - either a negotiated tempering of the North's ambitions or a U.S. acceptance of the North as a nuclear power.

The other alternative would be U.S. military action to attempt to neutralize or eliminate the North's nuclear assets - a move fraught with risk for South Korea, Japan and the United States.

At his Seoul news conference, Mattis said the North is, in effect, shooting itself in the foot.

Mattis touched off unease in South Korea last month when he told reporters at the Pentagon that the United States has military options for North Korea that doesn't put Seoul at risk. At Saturday's briefing, Mattis didn't offer a direct answer to what those options are or how and when they would be used.

"Our military options as I mentioned are designed to buttress the diplomats' efforts to maintain a deterrence stance and denuclearize the Korean Peninsula," he said. While the allies are committed to deterring North Korea, they also need "many different military options that would realistically reduce that threat as low as possible," Mattis said.

"And yes, we do have those options," he said.

The North says it needs nuclear weapons to counter what it believes is a U.S. effort to strangle its economy and overthrow the Kim government.

This was Mattis's second visit to South Korea since taking office in January. He made a point of going to Seoul and Tokyo on his first overseas trip in February, saying he wanted to emphasis the importance he places on strengthening alliances and partnerships.
