South Korean authorities have invited journalists to the venue of the upcoming inter-Korean summit talks in the border village of Panmunjom.

Journalists were invited for a tour of various places along the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) on Wednesday including the Joint Security Area (JSA) and Peace House.

The building located on the South Korean side of Panmunjom is set to be the site of a historic meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in later this month.

The 2018 inter-Korean summit is scheduled to take place on 27 April.

STORYLINE:

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held the first North-South Korea summit in more than a decade on Friday.

Kim said he's ready for "heartfelt, sincere and honest" talks with Moon on pending issues and that the Koreas must not repeat the past where they were "unable to fulfill our agreements."

Kim said he was worried they would disppoint people "if we do not follow up on any good agreements and announcements from the past meetings."

He added that he hoped the two could "meet frequently" to resolve issues.

Kim did not make any direct mention of the North Korean nuclear issue in the part of his talks with Moon that were shown on live television.

Moon in response there were high expectations surrounding the inter-Korean summit and that they produce an agreement that would please the people of Koreas and also "everyone around the world, who hope for peace."

Kim gave his younger sister Kim Yo Jong a place at the negotiating table.

She was in Kim's delegation as he walked across the line that divides the two Koreas on Friday morning and took a seat beside him as the first round of talks started.

The only other North Korean official present was former intelligence chief Kim Yong Chol, the top official in charge of relations with the South.

Kim Yo Jong has emerged as the most visible member of Kim Jong Un's regime after her brother - since she became the first member of the ruling North Korean family to travel to the South in early February for the Olympics.

US President Donald Trump addressed members of the US military on Sunday at an American air base in Osan, just south of Seoul, South Korea, before ending his Asia trip and returning to Washington.

Trump recounted the moment when he stepped across the border at the demilitarised zone into North Korea and became the first sitting US president to do so.

He said he and North Korea's Kim Jong Un "had a very productive meeting".

He also said he tried to sell Kim on the prosperity he believes awaits North Korea if it gives up its nuclear programme.

During his remarks to the service members, Trump called up to the stage US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and, Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter and a top White House advisor.

He jokingly called them "beauty and the beast."

Panmunjom, the border area between South and North Korea, was opened to the media on Friday, a day after the rival nations agreed to hold their third summit in a year later this month.

There was no North Korean presence at the Joint Security Area (JSA), where tourists frequently visit with hopes of seeing North Korean soldiers.

Panmunjom is where an armistice was signed to pause the 1950-53 Korean War, and it was also the venue for the historic summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un earlier this year.

It's located in the 248-kilometre (154-mile) -long Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that forms the de facto Korean border.

The DMZ is guarded on both sides by hundreds of thousands of combat-ready troops, razor-wire fences and tank traps.

More than a million mines are believed to be buried inside it.

South Koreans on Sunday had mixed reactions to a surprise meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the demilitarised zone at the Korean borders.

Min Jung-won, a 26-year-old graduate student, viewed the North Korea-US meeting as an opportunity for the Korean Peninsula to move closer to achieving peace and reunification.

On the other hand, 65-year-old business owner Choi Young-chul expressed a rather sceptical view, saying that both Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in were trying to take advantage of the meeting at DMZ for their own political interests.

Trump and Kim held a quick meeting at the border village Panmunjom earlier the day.

Trump crossed the military demarcation line at Panmunjom and briefly stepped into the North Korean side of the Joint Security Area.

A North Korean defector criticized the inter-Korean summit on Saturday, saying the two leaders "put on a show" withouth adressing human rights issues while "North Korean people are suffering from the slave regime."

Lee Ae-ran says she defected in 1997 due to the North Korean regime's abuse for her father's past as an anti-Kim Il Sung activist.

She now works in a North Korean restaurant in Seoul.  

Lee says Pyongyang failed to improve basic human rights and minimum living standars for its people.

The leaders of the two Koreas met in Panmunjom, at the DMZ (the Demilitarized Zone that divides the Koreas), on Friday and vowed to remove nuclear weapons from the peninsula and work toward a formal end to the Korean War.

STORYLINE:

In spite of renewed tension on the Korean peninsula, a group of mostly Canadian ice hockey enthusiasts played a friendly match with a North Korean team on Friday (11th March) in Pyongyang.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

North Korea took on the world at ice hockey on Friday night in Pyongyang.

But it was a friendly encounter, between a mixed group of foreign ice hockey enthusiasts, including some retired professionals, and North Korean professional players.

The sporting encounter has been planned for months, and went ahead in spite of a spike in tension on the Korean peninsula since the start of the year.

The first two quarters of Friday's match pitted the foreign visitors against the North Koreans, resulting in a 5-5 draw.

The second two quarters were mixed, with foreigners playing together with North Koreans and divided into "red" and "blue" teams - with the red team triumphing 3-2.

Most of the foreigners on this ice hockey trip are Canadian, but there are others from America, Germany, and Finland.

As well as a series of three matches, the foreign players took part in joint training sessions and workshops with the North Koreans.

The trip is the brainchild of Canadian Michael Spavor who runs the Paektu Cultural Exchange, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to strengthen business and sporting links with North Korea.

Spavor gained fame after he met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un together with basketball hall of famer Dennis Rodman in 2013.

Although Canada maintains diplomatic relations with North Korea, it does not maintain an embassy presence in Pyongyang.

Relations have been strained since South Korean-born Canadian pastor Hyeon Soo Lim was convicted of crimes against the state in Pyongyang last December and sentenced to life in prison.

Spavor said in a statement in January that he was aware of Lim's case, but that it would be "inappropriate…to get involved or comment on these serious consular issues" and that "the DPRK remains a safe place to travel".

DPRK is the acronym of North Korea's official name – the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The ice hockey group arrived in Pyongyang on the 8th of March (Tuesday) and is scheduled to leave on the 12th (Saturday).

STORYLINE

The South Korean Unification Ministry said that the safety of their citizens who work at the Kaesong Industrial Complex is "their first priority" after North Korea threatened over the weekend to close the facility and warned that the Korean Peninsula had entered "a state of war."

Speaking on Monday in Seoul, the minstry's spokesperson, Kim Hyung-suk, said they were working 24 hours a day to prepare for any likely scenario regarding the complex, which is located within North Korea, a few miles (kilometres) north of the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ).

As tensions have continued to escalate, North Korea threatened on Saturday to close down the Kaesong Industrial Complex.

North Korean state broadcaster said in a televised statement the government will "shut down the zone without mercy" should what it called "the puppet group" - a reference to the United States and South Korea - "seek to tarnish" the country's image.

It is thought that Pyongyang threatened to shut down the jointly run Kaesong Industrial Park to express anger over media reports suggesting the complex remained open because it was a source of hard currency for the impoverished North.

The plant remained opened on Monday as employees made their way from South Korea.

North Korea is expected to hold its Supreme People's Assembly meeting Monday, and the South Korean Unification Ministry encouraged the North not to act in provocative manner towards the international community.

"North Korea should not act against the repeated warnings from the international community, but we hope the North takes the virtuous path by recognising the will of the international society to cooperate to assist North Korea's transformation," said Kim Hyung-suk, the unification spokesperson.

A professor at the University of North Korean Studies, Yang Moo-jin, outlined the main points of interest he expected to hear from the North Korean Assembly, which included more economic and nuclear policies and whether Kim Jong Un's uncle, Jang Song Thaek, would be named the country's new prime minister and play a leading role in economic reform.

North Korea has been infuriated by South Korea-US joint military drills and new United Nations sanctions over its recent nuclear test.

A top North Korean decision-making body issued a pointed warning Sunday, saying that nuclear weapons are "the nation's life" and will not be traded even for "billions of dollars."

The comments came in a statement released after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over the plenary meeting of the central committee of the ruling Workers' Party.

The meeting, which set a "new strategic line" called for building both a stronger economy and nuclear arsenal, comes amid a series of near-daily threats from Pyongyang in recent weeks, towards South Korea and US.

Seoul residents reacted with concern to the recent announcements from the North.

"I hope that the North gives up on nuclear development and only focuses on economic development. I hope our government encourages the North to go in that direction," said one resident.
