STORYLINE:

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held the first North-South Korea summit in more than a decade on Friday.

Kim said he's ready for "heartfelt, sincere and honest" talks with Moon on pending issues and that the Koreas must not repeat the past where they were "unable to fulfill our agreements."

Kim said he was worried they would disppoint people "if we do not follow up on any good agreements and announcements from the past meetings."

He added that he hoped the two could "meet frequently" to resolve issues.

Kim did not make any direct mention of the North Korean nuclear issue in the part of his talks with Moon that were shown on live television.

Moon in response there were high expectations surrounding the inter-Korean summit and that they produce an agreement that would please the people of Koreas and also "everyone around the world, who hope for peace."

Kim gave his younger sister Kim Yo Jong a place at the negotiating table.

She was in Kim's delegation as he walked across the line that divides the two Koreas on Friday morning and took a seat beside him as the first round of talks started.

The only other North Korean official present was former intelligence chief Kim Yong Chol, the top official in charge of relations with the South.

Kim Yo Jong has emerged as the most visible member of Kim Jong Un's regime after her brother - since she became the first member of the ruling North Korean family to travel to the South in early February for the Olympics.

The South Korean government held a tour Friday of a recently opened trail in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the North and South.

The government opened trails to the public in multiple areas inside the DMZ in late April, marking first the anniversary of the inter-Korean summit between President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Access to the route, know as the Peace Trail, had been restricted to the public for decades.

During the hike along the coast, tourists can see North Korea's scenic Mount Kumgang.

Nam Yun-ho was moved while walking the Peace Trail. He was hopeful that inter-Korean relations will improve and that travel between the North and South will one day be possible.

Dozens of South Korean citizens participated in Friday's tour.

US President Donald Trump said Sunday the US and North Korea are in the "final stage of working out" the surprise quick meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the demilitarized zone of the Korean border.

Trump made the remark in an expanded meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and officials of the two countries.

Trump and Moon have since confirmed that Trump will meet Kim at the border later on Sunday.

Trump arrived in South Korea on Saturday for a two-day visit, following his trip to Osaka for the G20 Summit.

The two leaders will hold a joint news conference following the luncheon, and Trump is scheduled to visit the demilitarized zone near the border after leaving the presidential office.

Amid tensions between the United States and North Korea, there was no special movement observed from the North Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on Thursday.

Panmunjom is where an armistice was signed to pause the 1950-53 Korean War, with North Korea and China on one side and the American-led UN Command on the other.

No civilians live there, and a cluster of blue huts form a Joint Security Area overseen by North Korea and the UN Command.

It's located in the 248-kilometre (154-mile)-long Demilitarized Zone that forms the de facto Korean border.

The DMZ is guarded on both sides by hundreds of thousands of combat-ready troops, razor-wire fences and tank traps.

More than a million mines are believed to be buried inside it.

Today also marks the South Korea's 69th Armed Forces Day and South Korean president Moon Jae-in said that South Korea's aim has not changed in making Korean peninsula denuclearised.

South Korean authorities have invited journalists to the venue of the upcoming inter-Korean summit talks in the border village of Panmunjom.

Journalists were invited for a tour of various places along the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) on Wednesday including the Joint Security Area (JSA) and Peace House.

The building located on the South Korean side of Panmunjom is set to be the site of a historic meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in later this month.

The 2018 inter-Korean summit is scheduled to take place on 27 April.

Panmunjom, the border area between South and North Korea, was opened to the media on Friday, a day after the rival nations agreed to hold their third summit in a year later this month.

There was no North Korean presence at the Joint Security Area (JSA), where tourists frequently visit with hopes of seeing North Korean soldiers.

Panmunjom is where an armistice was signed to pause the 1950-53 Korean War, and it was also the venue for the historic summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un earlier this year.

South Koreans on Sunday had mixed reactions to a surprise meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the demilitarised zone at the Korean borders.

Min Jung-won, a 26-year-old graduate student, viewed the North Korea-US meeting as an opportunity for the Korean Peninsula to move closer to achieving peace and reunification.

On the other hand, 65-year-old business owner Choi Young-chul expressed a rather sceptical view, saying that both Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in were trying to take advantage of the meeting at DMZ for their own political interests.

Trump and Kim held a quick meeting at the border village Panmunjom earlier the day.

Trump crossed the military demarcation line at Panmunjom and briefly stepped into the North Korean side of the Joint Security Area.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Wednesday he will push for the recovery of soldiers' remains in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) if the inter-Korean relations improve.

Moon made the remark in his speech at the commemoration at Daejun National Cemetery, marking the 63rd Memorial Day.

Hundreds of people, including families of those who lost their lives during the 1950-53 Korean War, attended the ceremony.

A North Korean defector criticized the inter-Korean summit on Saturday, saying the two leaders "put on a show" withouth adressing human rights issues while "North Korean people are suffering from the slave regime."

Lee Ae-ran says she defected in 1997 due to the North Korean regime's abuse for her father's past as an anti-Kim Il Sung activist.

She now works in a North Korean restaurant in Seoul.  

Lee says Pyongyang failed to improve basic human rights and minimum living standars for its people.

The leaders of the two Koreas met in Panmunjom, at the DMZ (the Demilitarized Zone that divides the Koreas), on Friday and vowed to remove nuclear weapons from the peninsula and work toward a formal end to the Korean War.

STORYLINE:

South Korean President Moon Jae-in's convoy crossed the iconic Unification Bridge between the two Koreas on Friday as he headed towards the Demilitarized Zone for historic talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Kim Jong Un will be in uncharted territory when the third-generation autocrat crosses into the southern half of the DMZ separating the rival Koreas.  

Moon seems intent on keeping the North Korean leader at ease, and an aggressive local media at bay, while engineering a summit meant to move the Koreas from what seemed like the brink of war last year to the engagement that the liberal Moon has always dreamed of.

The leaders, who seemed on the verge of war months ago, will take a pleasant walk, plant a commemorative tree, inspect an honour guard and belly-up to a lavish banquet.

What's less clear is whether they can make any progress in closed door talks on the only thing the world really cares about: North Korea's growing arsenal of nuclear weapons.
