An Italian design exhibition is offering visitors the chance to explore living in tiny environments.

Designers and architects have collaborated as part of the 21st Triennale di Milano to showcase some of the best of modern living.

STORY-LINE:

These might look like sheds but they are actually tiny homes.

The micro-dwellings at just nine square metres are made of wood and contain two beds, a table, folding chairs, a sink, a toilet and a shower.

Often called tiny houses, they have become famous for their capacity to include everything a person needs within a very small surface.

Italian architect and designer Marco Ferreri has interpreted the concept as "the house of the wayfarer".

"The House of the Wayfarer was born because I have a home on a historical pilgrimage path called Abbots Way and I realised that a lot of the people who were travelling on this path were looking for a place to sleep that could have been more fitting with the spirit of their journey, " he says.

All of the units are self-sustainable in terms of energy: the sheet of metal used for the roof gathers rainwater in a gutter that feeds a cistern.

In the winter, a wood-burning stove, on which it is also possible to cook, heats the water.

In the summer, a small solar panel takes over.

The photovoltaic panel feeds a low-tension battery to power three LED lamps and allow the wayfarers to recharge their phones.

But for Ferreri, self-sustainability was not enough to fully captivate the wayfarer.

"The idea that I had was to ask three friends and good designers to give me three objects to demonstrate that all you need in an impersonal, simple and basic environment like the one in these tiny houses are a few objects to give it a soul," says Ferrari.

The designers are each given a house in which to place their objects.

Stefano Giovannoni opted to make his white Rabbit Chair the protagonist. His house is filled with Rabbit Chairs of all sizes.

Denis Santachiara offers the wayfarer objects of digital fabrication – a citrus squeezer, a colored stool, objects that need to be assembled before use.

His house also contains a second house – an emergency inflatable bed named Ca-Mia, produced by Campeggi.

The bed comes within small luggage and is available for wayfarers as a second option if they wish to sleep beneath the stars yet still protected by an even smaller house.

Architect and designer Michele De Lucchi decorated the entire home with his drawings.

"In Marco's tiny house I arranged everything that I believe is fundamental for me. So fundamentally, my drawings – the drawings I have in my pocket that I continue to scribble, write, take notes, these are drawings done on any kind of paper at any time, when I am walking, or even sitting here on this step and as a psychologist might say they are the testimony that I am living," says De Lucchi.

His house also includes his famous Tolomeo lamp, a small vase and his Pulcina coffeemaker, produced by Alessi with Illy.

De Lucchi explains that he really identified with the project's philosophy:

"I believe that an architect's biggest mistake today is to go wrong with the dimensions, and encumber: encumber the path of man, the space, the surface of the earth with something worthless. Thus this necessity for the essential is not only true but also very necessary," he says.

As for Marco Ferreri, he chose a small Livorno bookcase by Danese for the wayfarer to read, two Muccala stools by Billiani and fireplace irons by A Ferro e Fuoco.

Passersby and visitors seem to enjoy the outdoor exhibit, discovering the different houses and their identities.

"I really liked it because it gives the idea of slowing down, like slow food, slow design, slow fashion, slow a bit of everything and I think this is the spirit of the installation. It also makes us think of what is happening now, with all the refugees, the idea that a lot of designers have been exploring – minimal solutions for the refugees. And it also reminds us that we haven't really invented much – many years ago and even with very little things we were capable of using rain water, heat etc. It is very much in the spirit of our time," says one woman after seeing the four units.

"Quality over quantity is a very current theme especially because what is left over is not a symbol of prosperity, but wastefulness. It is a theme that surges when the concept of well-being changes," another adds.

The exhibit 'La Casetta del Viandante.The House of the Wayfarer,' runs from April 11 – September 12 at the Università degli Studi di Milano in Milan.

The exhibition is part of Milan's Triennale 21st edition. It also coincides with Design week happening in Milan 12-17 April.

LEAD-IN:

Big buildings are being re-imagined with a tiny twist at a Lego extravaganza event in London.

Fuelled by a popular film release and a multitude of possibilities, the Danish children's toy is still the top of Christmas lists the world over.

STORYLINE:

Whether it's the British royal wedding or a glitzy film premiere, big events are being re-created in tiny form in London.

At the British capital's ExCel exhibition and convention centre, a Lego extravaganza is in town with professionals and fans alike showing off their intricate creations.

They include this sprawling recreation of London's St. Pancras train station by Lego artist and author, Warren Elsmore.

Lego sets were all he wanted for birthdays and Christmases when he was young.

He decided to leave a career as an IT consultant to become a full-time expert in the bricks and published his first book on Lego in 2013.

He now works creating one-off Lego models for individuals and companies.

This creation took shape over the course of two-and-a-half years of busy evenings and weekends.

"This is St. Pancras station which is really recognisable if you're anywhere near London, it's a beautiful gothic building. I just wanted to build it because I loved it really," says Elsmore.

"It's about two metres wide (6 feet), four metres (13 feet) long and there's roughly 120,000 in there - not that we counted. And it was something I really wanted to build and it's worked out really nicely thankfully, but it's a bit of pain to move around sometimes."

Elsmore's work is now set to take centre-stage at BRICK 2014, a four-day family fun event which tackles almost everything in brick form.

And it couldn't have come at a better time, this year Lego officially became the biggest toy company in the world.

In September 2014, the Danish company reported their revenue for the first six months of 2014 had increased by 11 percent in comparison to the previous year.

That increase - thought to be fuelled by the popular Lego movie and new products releases - meant it surpassed US toy makers Mattel who make Barbie dolls.

This event is further proof of the toy's growing global popularity.

"We've got 21,000 square metres worth of Lego, 1.1 million bricks to play with in the play pits, we have Lego Minecraft here, Lego Architecture here," says Elsmore.

"If you like video games, TG Games who make all the Lego video games are here with pretty much their entire catalogue, we've got Lego shops galore. You name it, if you like Lego, it's here."

Despite its apparent increased popularity, Lego bricks haven't changed significantly since their launch over five decades ago.

The Lego Group was founded in 1932, but it wasn't until 1958 that the traditional brick as we see it today hit shop shelves.

According to Elsmore, it's the simple concept behind the toy which has contributed to its ongoing popularity.

"The tubes on the bottom of the Lego brick - that was the patented idea in 1958 - they're exactly the same now as they were back then, that hasn't changed at all," he says.

"So if I'm building creations like these sorts of things, I can be pulling out bricks occasionally that might be 30, 40 years old - still work just as well."

While professional Lego builders like Elsmore are showing off their creations, there's also fans jetting in from all over the world to exhibit their intricate models.

Computer expert, Bert Giesen, and his friends have come all the way from the Netherlands to construct their Lego model of a typical Dutch town.

Giesen says it doesn't have a name, but can be called 'Steendorp', which means 'Brick Village' in Dutch.

It took about a year to construct and is made of between 300 and 400-thousand bricks.

"I've brought here a representation of the Netherlands, I walk around in the city, see nice houses and try to build them and show them on shows like this," he says.

Unlike Elsmore, Giesen and his friends build their Lego creations as a hobby rather than a career.

He says it's a great way to relax and get creative after a long day at the office.

"What is great about Lego is the time I can put in to relax from a hard day's work, coming home, try to build something new," he says.

"The creativity I can put in it, the techniques I have to use to create something which is not stacking just the bricks on each other."

BRICK 2014 runs at ExCel London 27-30 November 2014.

The event will include workshops, fan zones and build off competitions.

Tickets for the Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 events have already sold out.

A rotating home that offers five different living spaces in one room is the main attraction at this year's Ideal Home Show in London.

The popular interior design show features three concept homes that are designed to make us think about the way we live.

STORYLINE:

Taking centre stage at the Ideal Home Show: the rotating house that's getting everybody in a spin.

This London event is all about the way we live now - and might in the future.

The rotating house has a space-age feel, and is designed with space constraints in mind.

A flick of the button and the dining room becomes the living room, another click and it becomes a bedroom.

Everything - and the kitchen sink - is hidden away behind panels on the four sides of the cube.

Most property hunters are concerned with the square footage (square meterage) of a property, but with this home it's time to think in three dimensions.

Lee Baldry is a technology and entertainment presenter who is demonstrating the rotating home at the Ideal Home Show.

"Everyone buys a house thinking how big is it, what's the square foot. Now we're talking cubic feet or metres because now we're giving it a three dimensional space instead of just floor space. So floors can become walls that then can become ceilings depending on which way round the rotating house is," he says.

Everything in the house needs to be designed not to fall out as the house rotates.

The microwave, for example, sits on a gimbal which rotates with the house. So if you're cooking soup and your house rotates then it won't spill.

Also the cutlery sticks to the cupboard wall with magnets.

The bed descends from the ceiling space, or what was once the floor, and a step ladder allows access.

Baldry explains: "You've got five kinds of spaces, you've got garden, you've got kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and living room and in this three by three metre cube you have all of those."

The rotating house was designed by architect George Clarke. It weighs 3.5 tonnes and stands 4.3 metres (14 feet) tall.

The house might be the most outlandish show home at the Ideal Home Show, but it's a clever demonstration of how much is possible in the tiniest amount of space.

If you're not head-over-heels about the house, then don't worry, it's just a prototype.

The 21st Century Cottage is much closer to becoming reality.

It is a traditional cottage with a thatched roof and a contemporary and stylish interior.

It's been designer for a family or couple who live in London and want to escape for a weekend retreat without losing their chic city style.

Thatch is gaining popularity as an eco-friendly alternative to other types of roofing. Designers say it is a great insulator of both noise and temperature and is also carbon-neutral.

Giles Perry, the event director of the Ideal Home Show says: "It's trying to bring a traditional element more up to date with a contemporary twist so obviously you can see the thatched roof behind you with the cottage underneath but I think you can see it's a very different twist."

The cottage's interior has been designed by Art and Design students from Chichester College.

Ella Smith, an art and design student who worked on the cottage explains her design vision.

"So lots of sleek designs, flat surfaces, very bright, clean, youthful if you will. Very modern, bright colours, the kitchen, bright yellow. We wanted to make it sophisticated but yet homely at the same time, so this is a second home for a London family."

The final show home is in fact three houses in one - the three storey Property Ladder apartment combines a home for a first time buyer, a new family home and a downsizing penthouse.

The kitchen area in the starter home is designed to be practical and cost effective, meeting the needs of busy professionals managing work and family.

The second floor is a new family home and is influenced Scandinavian style.

It features lots of space-saving, child-friendly designs, like this hanging wooden swing.

The penthouse was designed by Chichester College interior design student Jodie Reynolds.

"So with the top apartment it's about a downsizing couple they're 66, 60, retiring, love to travel, they are full of life, they have children, grandchild, and it's more just about creating a space to mix materials."

Reynolds worked specifically on the outdoor terrace with its living wall, corner sofa and fire pit.

The Ideal Home Show in Olympia runs from 24 March to 9 April, 2017. Organisers say the annual show attracts close to quarter of a million visitors.

"Everyone buys a house thinking how big is it, what's the square foot. Now we're talking cubic feet or metres because now we're giving it a three dimensional space instead of just floor space. So floors can become walls that then can become ceilings depending on which way round the rotating house is," he says.

Everything in the house needs to be designed not to fall out as the house rotates.

The microwave, for example, sits on a gimbal which rotates with the house. So if you're cooking soup and your house rotates then it won't spill.

Also the cutlery sticks to the cupboard wall with magnets.

The bed descends from the ceiling space, or what was once the floor, and a step ladder allows access.

Baldry explains: "You've got five kinds of spaces, you've got garden, you've got kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and living room and in this three by three metre cube you have all of those."

The rotating house was designed by architect George Clarke. It weighs 3.5 tonnes and stands 4.3 metres (14 feet) tall.

The house might be the most outlandish show home at the Ideal Home Show, but it's a clever demonstration of how much is possible in the tiniest amount of space.

If you're not head-over-heels about the house, then don't worry, it's just a prototype.

The 21st Century Cottage is much closer to becoming reality.

It is a traditional cottage with a thatched roof and a contemporary and stylish interior.

It's been designer for a family or couple who live in London and want to escape for a weekend retreat without losing their chic city style.

Thatch is gaining popularity as an eco-friendly alternative to other types of roofing. Designers say it is a great insulator of both noise and temperature and is also carbon-neutral.

Giles Perry, the event director of the Ideal Home Show says: "It's trying to bring a traditional element more up to date with a contemporary twist so obviously you can see the thatched roof behind you with the cottage underneath but I think you can see it's a very different twist."

The cottage's interior has been designed by Art and Design students from Chichester College.

Ella Smith, an art and design student who worked on the cottage explains her design vision.

"So lots of sleek designs, flat surfaces, very bright, clean, youthful if you will. Very modern, bright colours, the kitchen, bright yellow. We wanted to make it sophisticated but yet homely at the same time, so this is a second home for a London family."

The final show home is in fact three houses in one - the three storey Property Ladder apartment combines a home for a first time buyer, a new family home and a downsizing penthouse.

The kitchen area in the starter home is designed to be practical and cost effective, meeting the needs of busy professionals managing work and family.

The second floor is a new family home and is influenced Scandinavian style.

It features lots of space-saving, child-friendly designs, like this hanging wooden swing.

The penthouse was designed by Chichester College interior design student Jodie Reynolds.

"So with the top apartment it's about a downsizing couple they're 66, 60, retiring, love to travel, they are full of life, they have children, grandchild, and it's more just about creating a space to mix materials."

Reynolds worked specifically on the outdoor terrace with its living wall, corner sofa and fire pit.

The Ideal Home Show in Olympia runs from 24 March to 9 April, 2017. Organisers say the annual show attracts close to quarter of a million visitors.

From filmmaker to curator: Wes Anderson and his wife Juman Malouf have curated a new exhibit featuring the Habsburg collections in Milan.

From a mouse in a sarcophagus, to a room full of tiny miniatures and a billion-year-old meteorite - enter the quirky world of House of Habsburgs.

STORY-LINE:

It all revolves around the "Spitzmaus Sarcophagus".

Inside this small wooden box is a mummified mouse from 4th Century BC.

From the strange, to the ugly, to the old, there are 537 works of art and objects on display. It's called "Spitzmaus Mummy in a Coffin and Other Treasures".

Each have been carefully selected by American film director Wes Anderson and his wife, illustrator, designer and writer Juman Malouf.

This pallasite meteorite is thought to be around 4.5 billion years old. It was found in the mountains in Fukang, China.

"What you're looking at here is around 5,000 years of objects, some of them are actually even older, we have a meteorite here, which is a couple of billion years old," says Jasper Sharp, modern and contemporary art Curator at Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and associate curator of this exhibit.

"And we are collapsing the time frame of all of these objects, objects which have been in the same collection for hundreds of years, but which have never met before."

Typically, art exhibits tend to be arranged by genre, location and material. Not here, explains Sharp.

"Because the ivory sits with the ivory, and the wood sits with the wood, and the French paintings sit with the French paintings, and the Spanish paintings and so on.

"Here, they're all mixed up, according to what we are looking at, rather than who made them and when did they live.

"So, there are all sorts of beautiful encounters, taking place between objects, who've never encountered each other before and it's absolutely fascinating."

In typical Wes Anderson style - who's known for his visual and narrative styles - this can be seen throughout the exhibition.

Inside this room, everything is colour coordinated -  from vases to crystals to oil paintings, everything is a shade of green.

And on these walls are a dozen or so child portraits, each telling a story.

The exhibition is divided into chapters, but no works have captions or titles - it's up to each visitor to take what they want from the experience.

"Some of those chapters are determined by the colour of the objects, some of them by the size of the objects, we have a room full of miniatures, some of them by the age of the objects," explains Sharp.

"We have a room of children, some of them by the function, we have a whole section of cases and boxes, we have a zoo, we have a garden.

"So they're actually quite simple categories, at the end of the day, they're the sort of categories that a child would make when they came back from the park, with conkers or leaves and divided them according to the size or the colour, so they're sort of intuitive categories, rather than art historical."

The exhibit aims to immerse visitors in a collection.

Similar to a museum with sections, visitors have time to reflect on why the items were collected and the act of collecting itself.

"I believe this is an exhibit in which, if we abandon the idea of reading captions or coming out of here having learned something, everyone can visit and benefit from this visit," says Mario Mainetti, associated curator of the exhibit.

The exhibit, curated by Wes Anderson and Juman Malouf, was initially presented at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna in November 2018.

The Milan exhibit is the second version with a greater number of objects.

"I don't actually think what they've done here is curating an exhibition, I think they've collected," says Sharp.

"They've tapped into that madness and that pathology that the Habsburgs had when they collected these objects in the first place, and they've recollected.

"So, they've recollected from a vast collection, and made their own private collection from that collection. So, I think that's fascinating, I don't know of many exhibitions in which that sort of activity has been pursued in such a way."

The items come from twelve collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which houses over four million pieces collected by the Habsburg family and subsequently the Republic of Austria.

And also from the eleven departments of the Natural History Museum in Vienna, one of the largest natural history museums in the world with over 20 million objects.

One of the finest photography collections in the world is going up for auction this month in New York City.

Many of the items on sale document photography's early beginnings and some of its more curious inventions.

STORYLINE:

This month one of the world's comprehensive photography collections is going under the hammer in New York.

The Thurman Naylor collection is one of the most extensive photography collections around.

Some of the exhibits on sale range from original photo plates by Edward Curtis, the famous photographer who documented native Americans, to some more unusual cameras.

Curtis travelled the American west photographing the vanishing native American culture.

Among the other highlights of the auction are a spy camera collection, with various ingenious cameras like one discretely hidden in a woman's pocket book to one not so discretely worn by pigeon during world war one used to take aerials of enemy positions

Arlen Ettinger is the President of Guernsey's Auction House.

He says the items on display include small cameras which could be hidden in everyday items of clothing.

Also up for sale is one of the original underwater cameras used by explorer and underwater photographer Jacques Cousteau.

Ettinger says the Naylor collection traces the origins of early photography from its beginnings in the 1700s.

In addition, the collection includes a wide range of rare antique cameras.

Ettinger says the collection showcases the work of well-known photographers such as Margaret Bourke-White.

Margaret Bourke-White is recognised as one of the first women photographers, whose work illustrated the first cover of Life magazine.

There is also a large Derdorf camera used by Playboy Magazine for its centrefold pictures.

About a third of all the items sold are paper prints, with many of them by famous photographers such as Matthew Brady, Edward Curtis, as well as very rare Daguerreotype glass prints.

The sale of the Naylor collection will run from the 18 October to the 21 of October, 2007.

However, for those photography lovers who cannot make it to New York for the sale, items will also be sold over the internet at liveauctions.com.

The collection was put together over the past 50 years by entrepreneur Thurman F. Naylor.

The complete Naylor collection includes more than 30,000 photographic items.

Parkinson's is one of the most common diseases around the world, yet 200 years after James Parkinson first diagnosed what he called the "shaking palsy", we still don't have a cure in sight.

Today (11 April) is the start of Parkinson's Awareness Week focussing attention not only on the research that is being done to tackle the disease, but also looking at ways to improve the lives of people surviving with Parkinson's.

STORYLINE:

Until his death last year, former heavyweight champion Muhammed Ali was among the highest profile campaigners for research into Parkinson's.

He was just 42 when he was diagnosed with the disease, he'd retired just a couple of years before.

Increasingly his trembling hand and shuffling walk showed his hardest and longest fight had just begun.

Parkinson's is a progressive brain disorder that affects the way the brain connects with basic muscle function.

Eventually, the disease kills nerve cells in the brain and affects memory.

Pope John Paul II also had Parkinson's and now the actor Michael J. Fox is bearing the torch for the Parkinson's.

Here he gave evidence to the Senate asking them to release funds for Parkinson's research.

Fox told the committee: "While the changes in my life were profound and progressive, I kept them to myself for a number of reasons. Fear, denial for sure" and he continued: "I heard from thousands of Americans affected by Parkinson's writing and calling in to offer their encouragement and to tell me of their experience. They spoke of pain, frustration, fear and hope."

The disease gets its name from a man called James Parkinson, a doctor and surgeon who lived, worked and died among the patients he served in the Lonodn parish of Shoreditch.

He was also a studied geologist and campaigned for better living conditions for the workers who were streaming into Shoreditch for jobs created by the industrial revolution, and also many refugees fleeing wars in Europe.

The reverend Dr. Paul Turp is the vicar of St. Leonard's Church and he has followed the life of his former parishioner with interest.

He says: "You will see the font where he was baptised, you can see also where he was married. You go outside into the churchyard and you'll see the gardens where he's buried. There's a big bell sitting in the nave which used to be hanging up, that's how he would have heard that bell."

A commemorative plaque on the wall is dedicated to James Parkinson.

When Parkinson grew up he would have been surrounded by green fields, but by the time he was treating patients that changed.

During a cholera outbreak Turp says the church would have thirty-six burials each day.

Turp says: "The housing that's built are tiny houses, some of them just one room above another and there's no clean running water and there's no sewage system so James and his father John, being in the medical profession would have had constant nightmares."

The Parkinson's local surgery and family home was in this square just a short distance from the Royal London Hospital which he also served.

At the time he could not have known how important his Essay on the Shaking Palsy would be.

It was published in 1817.

He described cases and the symptoms and made the disease a clinical entity.

But that was two hundred years ago.

Here at the main training hall of the English National Ballet, patients with Parkinson's take part in dance classes which helps to improve their wellbeing and movement.

The class is a regular and popular fixture.

It began as a study between English National Ballet and researchers at Roehampton University.

They looked at psychological benefits and measured physical changes in posture, stability and mobility over twelve weeks. At the end of the period the researchers concluded that there was an an improvement in stability and balance as well as a significant improvement in the patient's sense of wellbeing.

This is particularly important in Parkinson's as the disease is caused by the progressive damage of nerve cells in the brain.

As well as affecting movement, the death of these nerve cells mean the brain is unable to produce dopamine which means many Parkinson's patients have severe depression as a result.

There is still no clear cut diagnosis for Parkinson's, often the disease is not confirmed until the brain has been examined after the patient's death, although advances in brain scanning may change this.

As well as funding research into Parkinson's, the charity Parkinson's UK has expanded the scheme to other forms of dance and there are similar projects in other cities of the world including New York.

During the first half of the class people exercise while seated, but the class also incorporates real ballet movements.

Tania Diggory from Parkinson's UK explains: "There's a really exciting project going on at the moment where a lot of dance practitioners from different countries are coming together to create this film about Dance for Parkinson's as well, so again having you know these kinds of projects going on and during Parkinson's Awareness Week with Parkinson's UK advocating all these different kinds of services that we do in support for people with Parkinson's, you know it's a really inspiring time."

She says: "I arrive wondering whether this will work at all, I don't use public transport anymore and I find I really can't I can just about get across with somebody helping me and then after an hour dancing in a group, with like minded people, with so much enthusiasm from the two people particularly who take us and the support they get that I can do the crossing the dance area with no problem at all, striding out, marching out to glory."

Mathews, now aged 81, was diagnosed twelve years ago. She's a trained physiotherapist and was always active but became frustrated when symptoms of the disease started to become more marked.

Her sense of exhilaration at the end of the class is matched by many others like Conrad Monk who is also 81.

Monk doesn't suffer tremors, but the disease affected his memory.

A brain scan showed he had a very low dopamine level and doctors diagnosed Parkinson's .

At first Monk knew nothing the disease, but came to realise that it was not an illness you could eventually got rid of, it's a life sentence.

He says: "People know a lot more about it, but we seem to be in a fog about how to get to the next stage, but I suppose all diseases are like that really. I don't think about it, I don't walk along thinking I've got Parkinson's."

The ballet dancers and teachers who assist the class are all volunteers, but the instructors get specialist training.

This class is being instructed by Danielle Teale, a creative associate artist with English National Ballet.

She explains: "We know what is going to be a beneficial movement. What is going to aid things like fluidity, postural stability, give people tools to take out of the dance studio and use day to day to support them with potentially freezing in public, for example, we're very clear with working on balance, stability, moving around space, navigating people and all of those things are embedded within the creativity of the class so we're not focussing on the Parkinson's as the primary concern, but then all of those things are embodied by the dances and they take them out of the studio with them and you see them (class members) walking tall and we're really focusing on that."

Parkinson's Awareness Week begins on April 11, the day James Parkinson was born in 1744.

With land prices sky high and dense living the norm, apartment sizes in Hong Kong are getting smaller and smaller.

But when your entire living space measures just eighteen square metres or less, how small is too small?

STORYLINE:

With its marble-clad lobby, sweeping balcony views and sleek, modern decor, Donny Chan's apartment building would seem the kind of upscale tower most young Hong Kong professionals aspire to live in.

But not for Chan, who avoids spending time in his 19th-floor apartment because it measures just 193 square feet (about 14 feet by 14 feet or 18 square metres).

His parking space-sized studio in the grandly named High One building is part of a growing trend for so-called micro- flats or micro-apartments that are diminutive even by the standards of space-starved and densely built Hong Kong.

Donny Chan says he finds life in his tiny apartment difficult.

"In the downside I feel like, 'oh come on, I'm back to this box once again.' And I have stay to in this box for another like 10 or 11 hours including sleeping time. So every time I step back into this area I do have this feeling, kind of like a cat squeezed into a box, something like this."

To avoid returning to his cramped and claustrophobic apartment before bedtime he plays basketball or badminton, goes to the movies or karaoke bars, and gets together with friends and family.

Life in a micro apartment has forced Chan to downsize across the board.

When he moved in, he estimates he sold off or threw out 40 percent of his possessions - suits, basketball shoes, comic books, model cars and planes - because they wouldn't fit.

He stores the rest of his stuff at his parents' place or in boxes supporting his single mattress.

There's a narrow wardrobe, a pint-sized loveseat and an undersized coffee table, but no space for a TV. Parties are out of the question: there's only enough space for one or two visitors.

The apartment's minuscule open kitchen includes a space-saving sink that converts to countertop. There are six cans of soda in his half-size fridge - Chan says he never cooks.

Transaction records show Chan's landlord bought the unit from developer Henderson Land for about 500,000 US dollars in 2015.

These tiny apartments, dubbed "mosquito-size units" or "gnat flats" in Chinese, are drawing online ridicule and underscore worries over the Asian financial hub's overheated real estate market and widening inequality.

Inside the flat floor panels mounted on hydraulic lifts automatically open up to reveal storage compartments that he and his wife use to store their possessions.

In one corner, a wall swings out to reveal yet more storage, as well as a hidden ladder for their cat, Dumpling, to climb up and access a network of overhead ledges for exercise.

There's a 55 inch flatscreen TV that's tucked away on a sliding frame that can be pulled out from a pocket hidden behind another wall. Behind the couch, there's a bathtub that can also be converted into seating for more guests.

It's all packed into an apartment measuring just 309 square feet (28.7 square metres).

Knight and his wife bought the one-bedroom apartment secondhand and renovated it.

They tore down the walls to remove the bedroom and hired an architect to design and build the apartment's eye-catching space-saving features.

Knight says they figured it was more cost effective than buying a slightly bigger apartment, which would have cost more than the money they spent on the renovation.

"When we bought this apartment we made a choice between buying somewhere that was small and buying somewhere that was marginally bigger. And this is Hong Kong and this is Central so it's the most expensive part of the most expensive city to live in in the world. And we basically worked out that for the cost of a few extra square feet we can do a very, very complex and very innovative, as it were, renovation instead. And we figured that by doing the good renovation we could live more comfortably in a small space than we could in a slightly bigger one."

He says they are happy with all the space-saving features.

"My favourite features in the apartment home would be for me the home cinema system with the kind of on-demand surround sound and two-tier seating. For my wife it would probably be the kitchen and the fact that she can lie in the bath while watching her TV shows."

The design named 'The Pit Stop' by the group of five architects features cooperative "co-living" space with shared storage facilities.

Yannis Chan and Derek Lau are two of the architects involved in the project.

Lau says he loves the way the private flat can open into a public space.

"My favourite feature of this flat is the openable bookcase, not just the bookcase is openable but it actually functions as an...openable boundary between the interior and exterior of the flat. By merging the private space and the public space we can actually share a common area with our neighbourhoods or we can invite guests to come play with us."

"It is ... in a way we think the land price here now is very crazy, maybe it's not the right time to buy in but we are waiting for the property market to cool down for several years but it never happens. It definitely affects lives because when you get married, you have bigger family, you need to move out from the family eventually. Actually it's such a big investment that will affect the stability of your life."

Like Andy Knight's apartment, their design for a apartment unit incorporates furniture that can be converted into other pieces of furniture or furniture which can serve multiple purposes.

In 'The Pit Stop' one of the walls can serve as a bookcase but also swings out to open the area to the corridor, transforming corridors that are usually ignored into communal spaces.

A sleeping platform over the bathroom is accessed by steps that also serve as storage cubicles. The desk or dining table can fold up into the wall when not needed.

It has taken decades for the government to provide housing for the city's hundreds of thousands of refugees from mainland China, and personal living space has always been at a premium in Hong Kong.

Last year (2016), developers built 206 apartments smaller than 20 square metres (215 square feet), up from 79 in 2015 and none in 2012.

This year (2017), 30 percent of the 17,122 apartments set to be completed will be smaller than 40 square metres (430 square feet). That ratio will rise to 43 percent in 2018.

With land prices sky high and dense living the norm, apartment sizes in Hong Kong are getting smaller and smaller.

But when your entire living space measures just eighteen square metres or less, how small is too small?

STORYLINE:

With its marble-clad lobby, sweeping balcony views and sleek, modern decor, Donny Chan's apartment building would seem the kind of upscale tower most young Hong Kong professionals aspire to live in.

But not for Chan, who avoids spending time in his 19th-floor apartment because it measures just 193 square feet (about 14 feet by 14 feet or 18 square metres).

His parking space-sized studio in the grandly named High One building is part of a growing trend for so-called micro- flats or micro-apartments that are diminutive even by the standards of space-starved and densely built Hong Kong.

Donny Chan says he finds life in his tiny apartment difficult.

"In the downside I feel like, 'oh come on, I'm back to this box once again.' And I have stay to in this box for another like 10 or 11 hours including sleeping time. So every time I step back into this area I do have this feeling, kind of like a cat squeezed into a box, something like this."

To avoid returning to his cramped and claustrophobic apartment before bedtime he plays basketball or badminton, goes to the movies or karaoke bars, and gets together with friends and family.

Life in a micro apartment has forced Chan to downsize across the board.

When he moved in, he estimates he sold off or threw out 40 percent of his possessions - suits, basketball shoes, comic books, model cars and planes - because they wouldn't fit.

He stores the rest of his stuff at his parents' place or in boxes supporting his single mattress.

There's a narrow wardrobe, a pint-sized loveseat and an undersized coffee table, but no space for a TV. Parties are out of the question: there's only enough space for one or two visitors.

The apartment's minuscule open kitchen includes a space-saving sink that converts to countertop. There are six cans of soda in his half-size fridge - Chan says he never cooks.

LEAD IN

Jane Austen's world famous novel, Pride and Prejudice, was first published today, 200 years ago in January 1813.

The story about love, society and marriage in 19th century England has been adapted into film and television drama countless times and the novel has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.

STORYLINE:

The tiny village of Chawton, in Hampshire - home to Jane Austen for the last 8 years of her life.

It's also the place where the author revised and published her most famous novels including Pride and Prejudice which celebrates its 200th birthday in January.

Mansfield Park, Emma and Persuasion were entirely written here. Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Northanger Abbey were written earlier, but revised and finally published from here.

The 17th century red brick house is now a museum dedicated to the author.

Visitors can see a large collection of personal items and furniture including the family piano.

Austen was known to be a proficient musician and would practice at least two hours a day.

Alongside a lock of the author's hair, there's also a pair of topaz crosses given to Jane and her sister Cassandra by their brother, Charles.

Another highlight is an original quilt crafted by Jane, her sister and their mother while staying at the house - a way for the ladies to pass the evenings. The quilt would have been hand stitched by candle light.

And perhaps most famous of all is the tiny table where Austen would sit and write on small scraps of paper that she would put together to form the manuscripts for her novels.

Museum curator, Louise West says: "People can't quite believe that she created these masterpieces on this table and I think it's the one thing that if there was a fire we all agree, that's the thing we'd run and get and run out of the house with."

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the publication of Pride and Prejudice on January 28th 1813, the museum will be putting two original first edition copies of the book on display.

The first given to Jane's brother, Edward is signed by his daughter, Marianne Knight.

The second belonged to Austen and is signed by Lady Caroline Lamb, the mistress of the British poet, Lord Byron.

The museum would not divulge their worth.

Almost as famous as Austen's novels are a series of personal letters she wrote, largely to her sister but also to other family members about her life and work. Two such letters are also being put on display at the museum to mark the bicentenary.

One, dated 29th January 1813 and written to Cassandra tells of Austen's joy at finally having Pride and Prejudice published.

Austen writes: "I want to tell you that I have got my own darling child from London."

West explains: "Her own darling child of course means her book. This is her published book of Pride and Prejudice. This tells you exactly what Jane thought of her books. They were her children. She had no children of her own and these where she poured all her maternal feelings I suppose. And the way she describes that book, I think in a way it's why it's so big for everybody, because it's such a precious thing for her."

Writer in residence at Chawton is Rebecca Smith - Jane Austen's great niece 5 times removed.

A published author of 3 novels, "The Bluebird Caf�," "Happy Birthday and All That," and "A Bit of Earth," she is also the author of "Jane Austen's Guide to Modern Life's Dilemmas."

Smith is descended from Austen's brother, Francis. She keenly points out that Austen had 33 nieces and nephews, so more than a thousand people in the UK that can also trace their family tree back to the author, but adds she is still proud to be related to one of the greatest writers of all time.

Like Austen, Smith grew up in a literary household. Her mother is also a published author. She says wanting to become a writer was the 'normal thing to do', but admits there was also some inspiration from her famous great aunt.

"When I was growing up I wasn't really terribly aware of it. I'd visit my great aunt's in Winchester and lots of the things that they had are now here in the museum, but I just kind of took it all for granted. It was only when I was in my teens and early twenties that I began to appreciate it a bit more."

In the U.K. in the 1970's and 1980's Jane Austen's novels featured highly on the school curriculum. Today some regions still include "Pride and Prejudice" and "Emma" for A Level study, although to a much lesser extent.

The Jane Austen Society was set up to honour author's memory and work and to secure the preservation of manuscripts, letters and memorabilia of Jane Austen and the Austen family. There are more than 2,000 members across 11 branches in the U.K.

Jill Webster is secretary of the Kent branch, which has 130 members.

For Jane's upcoming birthday on December 16th the branch have organised a birthday lecture by visiting professor, Malcolm Andrews.

For the bicentenary the society will be celebrating with readings and period music. Members will be invited to come in period dress and prizes will be given to the best costumes.

West says their mission of the Jane Austen Society is to keep the spirit of Jane Austen alive, but adds that the author's writing is so timeless that she also manages to do that very well on her own.

"They are very simple plots, they're about love and marriage and money and power and small, domestic family settings and I think they're applicable to any time and any age. Look at the Bollywood film of Pride and Prejudice, it works perfectly well in India as well."

Austen was paid a one-off fee of �110 by publisher Thomas Egerton of Whitehall for Pride and Prejudice. Egerton is said to have made at least �450 from the first two editions alone. But by the time Austen had written Emma in December 1815 she had realised the worth of her books.

Webster, West and Smith all agree, that Austen was an author first, but also an astute business women and an early champion for women.

West says: She really did push the boundaries. She changed her publisher when she was writing Emma, because she thought she deserved more money. And I think that's a really interesting thing about her, she liked the money that she made from her books, she wrote them...I think she couldn't have not written them because she was a creative person, but she wanted to get paid properly for them, because she knew that people appreciated them, so she was very much an early feminist."

Webster adds: "She was very proud of her authorship I think we make a mistake if we think she was a quiet little violet writing downstairs at her table. I think she was pretty pleased at herself with being an author and selling books."

Smith Concludes: "Her earliest biographers had this idea of her being the very good maiden aunt and this very demure person, so people do keep changing their ideas of Jane, but through it all we have the novels and we have her letters too."

Museum staff say they expect thousands of celebratory lectures, readings and productions of Pride and Prejudice to be taking place across the globe in honour of the 200th anniversary of the classic novel.

Six modernist Berlin housing projects built in the early 1900s have been added to a list of Word Heritage sites of the U.N.'s cultural organisation.

Delegates to a UNESCO conference in Quebec City, Canada voted on Monday (July 7, 2008) to add the housing estates to its list of more than 800 sites around the world that are deemed to have "outstanding universal value."

STORYLINE:

Six modernist Berlin housing projects built in the early 1900s have been added to a list of Word Heritage sites of the UN's cultural organisation.

The six housing developments scattered across the German capital were built between 1910 and 1933 in the surge of progressive social policy and modernist culture that peaked under the Weimar Republic that governed Germany between the World Wars.

The apartments had high ceilings, parquet floors and balconies and provided clean, affordable housing for lower-income renters at a time when many were crammed into tiny, squalid turn-of-the century apartments.

A UNESCO statement said that the buildings "exercised considerable influence on the development of housing around the world."

The buildings' architects, including Walter Gropius and Bruno Taut, are often praised both for their aesthetic innovations and their commitment to improving living standards, under the motto "sun, light and airiness" for everyone.

German Transport Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee visited the "Horse-shoe-shaped estate" (German: "hufeisensiedlung") on Wednesday July 9, 2008.

The estate in Britz district, which was built between 1925-1930 by architects Bruno Traut and Martin Wagner.

Local resident Sebastian Trumma says that he hopes that the estate will get even more protection in future and people will come to visit.

Another resident of Britz horse-shoe-shaped estate, Regina Herrmann says that her house is surrounded by parkland and gardens and its good place to live.

Falkenberg Garden City (German: "Gartenstadt Falkenberg") in district Treptow-Koepenick, was built between 1913-1916 by architects Bruno Traut and Heinrich Tessenow.

Dr. Hubert Staroste, of the Heritage Conservation Authority Berlin says German social housing and architecture of that inter-war period had an international impact.

Bernhard S. Elias, was one of those who promoted the housing estates to UNESCO.

He says that there is always a waiting list for apartments and denies that there will be any increase in rent due to the estates new status.

A spot on the list helps attract tourists and grants from the United Nations' World Heritage Fund.

Nail art's a major part of today's beauty business. The overall nail industry is worth 8.5 billion dollar business. This includes nail art, as well as extensions, gel polish manicures, and pedicures according to Nails Magazine, the industry resource for professional nail technicians.

Erika Kotite, Editor-in-Chief of Nails magazine describes it as a 'nail art phenomenon'.

"We also know that there is a nail salon on the Olympic village, which is very cool, so they can actually go in and have the flag of their country or the colours of their country or any of the motifs that represent where they come from", she says. "It's just a perfect tie in with those little portrait canvases on the ends of our fingers."

Nail art is now one of the top five most tagged items on all of Instagram and Pinterest.

Instagram has overtaken Facebook as the social platform of nail art and is a huge part of the social world today, according to Nail Magazine.

MARIE NAILS on 3rd Street in Los Angeles is a premiere Japanese based nail art salon with 15 locations worldwide.

It is known for steady precision and some of the best nail art craftsmanship in the USA.

Many travel far and wide for this level of detail.

These mini works of art include hand crafted intricate designs using rhinestones, crystals and studs.

Kristina Kuroyian, MARIE NAILS spokesperson in Los Angeles says the Olympics have created real excitement this year.

"Literally everyone that comes here just gets the Olympic nails", she says. "It's very exciting because were are representing our teams and people do different kinds. I see gymnastic figures. I see swimming, like waters."

Ashley Snodgrass, drives two hours into the heart of Los Angeles every two to three weeks to get her nail art designed here.

Snodgrass is a huge Olympic sports fan and can't get enough of Olympic fever on her nails, wardrobe, smartphone and TV set.

"Usually during Olympic season I wear red white and blue. I have custom Nike's made with American flags all over, so this is the icing on the cake for the Rio Olympics. I'm super excited!" she says.

Alona Malinskaya, is another nail art fan.

"I think nail art is amazing. It's very, very cool because you can choose and you can change different day, different time, different week or whatever your mood is and now it's Olympic time so I decided to do my nails in Olympic style" she says.

House of Polish in Beverly Hills is known for its modern and chic nail menu. It includes Christian Louboutin nail polish, genuine Swarovski crystals from Austria, nail charms and 3D art with beads.

House of Polish co-owner Robert Nguyen has been in the nail business his entire life and decided to open up a salon that caters for nail art enthusiasts.

He says the Olympics and the US election have made nails a huge deal this year.

"In the salon a lot of clients are asking us to do Olympics and with the political things going on as well, they are doing that so it's a way for the client to express themselves through their nails", says Nguyen.

Nail artists here go into great Olympic detail by adding five extremely tiny 3D gold rings to their designs.

Back at Nails Magazine Erika Kotite says the reason we're seeing a boom in nail art this summer is that it's a continuation of the body art movement that continues to trend.

"Nails are small. Nails are something that even a conservative woman can really go wild with but it's small, it's temporary and it's inexpensive", she says.
