An Israeli official said Wednesday that the U.S. and Israel have the "closest possible intelligence relationship", following President Donald Trump's disclosure of classified information to senior Russian officials, which had been supplied by Israel.

Israel's Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy Michael Oren said that relationship between Washington and Jerusalem "will continue to be close and will grow stronger still in the future."

He made the statements days before Trump is due to arrive for a state visit in Israel.

Israel has yet to acknowledge claims from U.S. officials that it was the source of the highly classified information about an Islamic State plot that Trump divulged to Russian diplomats.

Trump himself said he had "an absolute right" as president to share "facts pertaining to terrorism" and airline safety with Russia. Yet U.S. allies and some members of Congress expressed concern bordering on alarm.

Trump appears to have shared the information without Israel's consent, which would mark a severe violation of the confidentiality of their intelligence-sharing agreement.

Even more remarkable is that Trump chose to confide in representatives of an adversary, who could relay the information to its allies Iran and Syria, bitter enemies of Israel, and potentially find the source.

Trump is due to arrive in Israel next week as part of his first overseas trip as president.

Israel has looked to Trump as a close ally but there has been growing apprehension over his unpredictability.

Michael Oren: "Again, I'm not going to comment on that issue but I'll only reiterate that our intelligence relationship has always been exceedingly close and will remain close, will continue to be close again."

Israeli had mixed reactions on Thursday to the news that US President Donald Trump had shared classified information to senior Russian officials.

Avigdor Nimmi, a local resident, said that Trump's disclosure of classified information was irresponsible and "unethical".

Another man, David Katz, defended Trump's actions, and accused the media of "picking on" the US President.

Protesters have held a demonstration in support of a Palestinian-Jordanian woman who is being held without charge by Israel.

Hiba al-Labadi has been under administrative detention since August.

STORY-LINE:

Blindfolded outside Ofer prison, protesters are showing their support for Hiba al-Labadi.

The Palestinian-Jordanian woman has been detained by Israel without charge.

She was taken into custody on August 20 at the Allenby Bridge, crossing between Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Al-Labadi is being held under Israel's administrative detention procedure - a controversial policy that allows authorities to hold people for months at a time without a trial.

Aida Touma-Suleiman, an Israeli Knesset member, says the practice should be "stopped immediately."  

"Those should either go through a real trial, if they have any accusation let us all know about it, but if not, they have to be freed immediately," she says.

"Hiba is under hunger strike and we should all be worried about what she is going through, this oppression process."

Al-Labadi has been on hunger strike since September 26.

Today a court hearing has been held to review her detention.

"We claimed that the administrative detention is an illegal measure and it's not based on any conviction, but on classified and secret documents. We suggested an alternative - that the woman is returned to Jordan," says her lawyer, Raslan Mahajneh.

The hearing ended without a final resolution but according to Mahajneh, the judge will meet with the Israel Security Agency for a classified meeting about al-Labadi's status.

The court has also requested a report on al-Labadi's health condition.

Mahajneh says his client denies any wrong doing.

"She denied all suspicions that involve her, that she belongs to Hezbollah or was recruited to Hezbollah," he says.

"There is no evidence to indict her and to convict her in a trial. I wish they would hand over an indictment so we can see what they're basing their claims on but here they're basing their claims on classified intelligence documents which they don't want to reveal, since they don't want to harm their source."

The court will hand over a decision over al-Labadi's fate in the coming days.
