An Israeli minister lashed out at world media on Wednesday, accusing them of bias against Israel and defended Israel's handling of the case of an American graduate student held in detention at the country's international airport for the past week over allegations that she supports a boycott against the Jewish state.

Lara Alqasem, a 22-year-old American citizen with Palestinian grandparents, landed at Ben-Gurion Airport last week with a valid student visa and was registered to study human rights at Israel's Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

But she was barred from entering the country and ordered deported, based on suspicions that she supports the Palestinian-led boycott movement.

An Israeli court has ordered that she remain in custody while she appeals, although Israel says she can leave the country.

The weeklong detention is the longest anyone has been held in a boycott-related case.

Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan said in an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday that Israel had the right to protect itself and decide who enters its borders despite growing international criticism.

His remarks come after the Times published an opinion piece by columnist Bret Stephens and editor Bari Weiss critical of Israel's handling of Alqasem's case.

More than 300 academics penned a letter in the British Guardian Wednesday calling the case "an attack on academic freedom."

While waiting for her appeal to be heard, Alqasem has been spending her days in a closed area with little access to a telephone, no internet and a bed that was infested with bedbugs, according to people who have spoken to her.

Erdan insisted Alqasem was not detained and was free to return to the US, but chose to remain at Ben Gurion airport in a move he suggested was part of an anti-Israel campaign.

Leora Baruch, a member of Alqasem's defence team said the case is a crucial one as it goes to the very heart of the debate about Israel's identity.

Alqasem, from the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Southwest Ranches, Florida, is a former president of the University of Florida chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine.

The group is a branch of the BDS movement, whose name comes from its calls for boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel.

BDS supporters say that in urging businesses, artists and universities to sever ties with Israel, they are using nonviolent means to resist unjust policies toward Palestinians.

Israel says the movement masks its motives to delegitimise or destroy the Jewish state.

Alqasem's case is set to be heard at a Tel Aviv court on Thursday.

Israel's foreign minister said on Sunday that a peace deal with the Palestinians was "impossible" under current conditions and that Israel shouldn't pursue one.

Avigdor Lieberman told Israeli diplomats that Israel should instead seek a long-term, interim agreement on security and economic matters.

Palestinians have consistently rejected that approach.

Lieberman said the West Bank Palestinian Authority was not legitimate because it has postponed elections.

Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority broke down in September.

US mediators have not been able to restart them.

Lieberman is known for expressing hard-line views that don't always represent those of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu's office had no immediate comment.

Lieberman also reacted to a statement by his Turkish counterpart, Ahmet Davutoglu, who said on Saturday that his country wanted improved ties with Israel but the Jewish state must apologise and offer compensation for its deadly raid on a Gaza Strip-bound aid flotilla.

Lieberman said the Turkish insistence on apology was "beyond rudeness" and stressed that Israel would not apologise, but that, on the contrary, it was Turkey who should apologise to Israel "for its cooperation with terror entities, supporting terror, supporting the IHH, Hamas and Hezbollah."

The IHH is the Turkish acronym for the Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief, who organised the aid flotilla.

Israel and Turkey built strong military and economic ties over the past 15 years, and Turkey became Israel's closest ally in the Muslim world.

Relations between the two soured, however, with Turkey's Islamic-oriented government's increasingly vociferous criticism of Israel's treatment of Palestinians.

They hit an all-time low in May, when Israeli naval commandos killed nine activists from Turkey on board a Gaza-bound ship that tried to breach Israel's naval blockade.

Turkey withdrew its ambassador from Tel Aviv and Turkish leaders denounced Israel repeatedly over the raid.

Turkey has made an Israeli apology and compensation for the victims' families a condition for improved ties.

Israeli commandos claimed they opened fire in self-defence after meeting what they called unexpected resistance when they boarded the ferry carrying aid supplies to Gaza.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan also wants Israel to end its blockade on the Gaza Strip.

Israel and Egypt blockaded Gaza after the militant Islamic Hamas seized control there in 2007.

Israel wants Turkey to return its ambassador and remove the raid from the international agenda.

High-level Turkish and Israeli officials met in Geneva earlier this month to try to mend fences, after Turkey sent aircraft and firefighters to help Israel battle a wildfire.

But they failed to agree on terms.

Israel and Syria on Wednesday said they are holding indirect peace talks through Turkish mediators - the first official confirmation of contacts between the longtime enemies.

In statements issued minutes apart in Jerusalem and Damascus, the two governments said they had "declared their intent to conduct these talks in good faith and with an open mind," with the goal of reaching "a comprehensive peace."

Both nations thanked Turkey for its help, and Turkey issued its own confirmation. Muslim Turkey has good ties with both Israel and Syria.

There have been reports in recent months of new Israeli-Syrian contacts through Turkey, and Turkey's foreign

minister said earlier this month that his country was trying to bring the sides together.

But this was the first official confirmation that contacts have actually resumed.

An Israeli government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Olmert's chief of staff and diplomatic adviser had been in Turkey since Monday, and their Syrian counterparts were also in the country.

Israel and Syria are bitter enemies whose attempts at reaching peace have repeatedly failed in the past, most recently in 2000.

The nations have fought three wars, and their forces have also clashed in Lebanon.

Peace with Syria would require Israel to withdraw from the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau which Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war and has occupied ever since.

A Golan withdrawal would be extremely controversial among Israelis, and it could be difficult for a weakened leader like Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, whose already low popularity has been battered by a recent corruption investigation, to win public support for such a move.

Peace talks with Syria could also divert attention from newly relaunched Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, which aim to reach an agreement by the end of the year, but are unlikely to do so.

Israel, meanwhile, has demanded that Syria - which offers refuge to militant groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad and supports the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah - distance itself from what it terms terrorism as a condition for talks.

Last September, Israeli warplanes attacked an installation in Syria that the U.S. has claimed was an unfinished nuclear reactor built by North Korea.

U.S.-mediated talks between the two countries broke down in 2000 because of disagreements over the extent of an Israeli withdrawal from the Golan.

The main point of contention concerns a narrow strip of land along the Sea of Galilee, which Israel wants to keep to ensure its control of vital water supplies.

The latest round of contacts began in February 2007, when Olmert visited Turkey.

The announcement comes as Olmert finds himself mired in yet another corruption investigation - the fifth investigation into his conduct since he took office in 2006.

His dismal approval ratings have sparked widespread speculation about his ability to survive in office and to conclude an elusive peace deal with the Palestinians by the year-end target.

Reaction in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, was mixed.

Kadima member Yoel Hasson approved of the reopening of talks with Syria, but said any agreement reached between the two sides should go to a referendum in Israel.

Alon Liel, former director of the Israeli Foreign Ministry and Chairman of the Israel-Syria Peace Society, was very supportive of the move.

Speaking in Jerusalem on Wednesday, he called it "a wonderful development."

The top official of an international human rights watchdog, that has found itself at odds with the Israeli government, welcomed a delay in a court hearing on Wednesday about whether to deport its local director from the country.

Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch (HRW), said he hoped the Israeli government would use the period to reflect and "reassess" its position.

For over a year, Israel has been working to expel the local director of the international group Human Rights Watch, Omar Shakir, accusing him of promoting boycotts.

The deportation issue had been scheduled to go before Israel's Supreme Court this week, but was postponed on Wednesday until September.

Roth had travelled to Israel to demonstrate the stakes at hand by attending the court hearing himself, adding there was mounting international pressure against the move.

Roth said the possible deportation would list Israel among a handful of governments that bar HRW researchers such as North Korea, Iran, Sudan, Cuba and Venezuela.

He accounted Israel's change in attitude towards the rights group to internal Israeli politics as well as the closeness of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to US President Donald Trump.

The BDS (Boycott Divest and Sanction) movement promotes boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israeli institutions and businesses in what it says is a non-violent campaign against Israeli abuses against Palestinians.

Israel says the campaign masks a deeper goal of delegitimising and even destroying the Jewish state.

Roth noted that neither the group nor Shakir, in his position at Human Rights Watch, has called for a boycott of Israel.

It says Shakir, who is a US citizen, is being targeted for the group's opposition to Israel's West Bank settlements and its calls for companies to stop working with the settlements.

The boycott movement's economic impact on Israel has been minimal, but it has enjoyed stronger success in the entertainment and academic worlds, gaining significant support on US college campuses.

Israel and its allies, however, have succeeded in promoting legislation in US states and elsewhere against BDS.

"Actually what people don't recognise is that Human Rights Watch's programme on the United States is our largest country programme in the world. And indeed Human Rights Watch has been doing intensive work, most recently on the child separations on the border; the efforts to undermine the right to seek asylum; on the various Trump efforts to demonise immigrants, to promote racist views to really, you know, undermine human rights enforcement at home. And this of course presents a problem globally as well because traditionally, while the US government has never been a, you know, a regular promoter of human rights, it at least has been a government that we could look to from time to time. And that is not terribly productive under Trump. You know, Trump is so busy embracing autocrats. He's not the most credible articulator of human rights principles. So we've had to look elsewhere. But the good news is that there are other governments who've been willing to step up to the plate and whether it's you know Saudi abuses in Yemen or Russian indiscriminate bombardment in Syria or Myanmar crimes against humanity against Rohingya or even China's persecution of the Uighur Muslims. There are governments willing to stand up. And typically it's not the United States, but there are other coalitions of governments that continue to be a powerful voice for human rights and have caused all of those governments to react and to be less abusive than they might have been."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday.

Speaking ahead of a weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, Netanyahu said the "important" talks would focus on ways to strengthen coordination between the Israeli and Russian armies in Syria.

Israel and Russia maintain a hotline to prevent their air forces from clashing over war-torn country.

Netanyahu added that Israel is working towards preventing Iran from using "Syria as a front in their war to destroy Israel".

Israel has acknowledged carrying out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, primarily against Iranian targets and suspected arms shipments to Hezbollah militants.

A court in Israel on Tuesday ruled that a woman wanted for up to 74 charges of sexual abuse of schoolgirls in Australia will not be held under house arrest.

Malka Liefer, a former Australian principal accused of child abuse, fled to Israel in 2008.

James McGarry, Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian embassy in Jerusalem, said on Tuesday the Australian government had a "strong interest" in extraditing Liefer to stand trial in Australia.

Israel said last week that Leifer will not be extradited to Australia, citing her mental health.

Shana Aaronson, social services coordinator at the Israel office of Jewish Community Watch, told The Associated Press the decision not to hold Liefer under house arrest is "very, very upsetting for her victims".

James McGarry, Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian embassy in Jerusalem, said on Tuesday the Australian government had a "strong interest" in extraditing Liefer to stand trial in Australia.

Israel said last week that Leifer will not be extradited to Australia, citing her mental health.

Shana Aaronson, social services coordinator at the Israel office of Jewish Community Watch, told The Associated Press the decision not to hold Liefer under house arrest is "very, very upsetting for her victims".

The European Union on Wednesday approved guidelines for its member states to specially label products made in West Bank settlements, a move that has already been criticised by Israel as "disguised anti-Semitism."

The EU move, which came after months of procrastinating, underscores the bloc's unhappiness over Israel's continued expansion of settlements on territory that Palestinians seek for their future state.

The EU is now seeking to differentiate between its relations with Israel and with the settlements, fearing that a continued status quo would never push the Israeli government into changing its settlement policies.

The EU's Ambassador to Israel told reporters in Jerusalem on Wednesday that the move did not in any way support a boycott or sanctions against Israel.

Lars Faaborg-Andersen stressed that EU member states mainly wanted clarification on where the goods originated from, and whether they were produced in Jewish settlements or by Palestinians in areas beyond the internationally recognised borders of Israel.

Israel's minister for intelligence and strategic affairs has warned the West to not heed the more moderate rhetoric of Iranian president Hasan Rouhani whilst Iran "continues its approach toward nuclear weapons."

"If nothing serious will be done Rouhani will continue to smile, will continue to appease, and he will smile all the way to the bomb," Yuval Steinitz said on Sunday.

On Monday Rouhani was en route to New York after urging the West to heed his appeals for greater dialogue and denouncing economic sanctions as a dead-end strategy.

He says he hopes to use this week's annual U.N. General Assembly gathering to win Western promises to restart stalled talks over Tehran's nuclear programme.

Rouhani is urging the U.S. and allies to ease sanctions to move ahead the negotiations.

Iran claims its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.

But critics in Israel and the West dismiss such explanations. They point to Iran's refusals to cooperate with U.N. nuclear inspectors, its covert enrichment activities and lack of progress in years of Western on-and-off negotiations with the Iranians.

"The most important thing that is going to influence our future, the future of Israel and the Middle East, the future of Europe, the future of America and the rest of the world, is the attempt of the ayatollahs, the attempt of Iran, to cheat the world," said Steinitz.

Israel has long claimed a nuclear-armed Iran would pose a grave threat to world peace and security.

Israel "does not intend to intervene" in the power struggle between Palestinian factions, the Israeli Deputy Prime Minister said on Sunday.

Hamas and Fatah gunmen fought sporadic battles in Gaza City's beach front neighbourhoods and around security compounds early on Sunday, ignoring renewed truce appeals and Arab mediation efforts.

One man was killed and 13 people wounded in the violence which continued as leaders from both sides prepared to head to Saudi Arabia for talks aimed at ending the bloody power struggle.

More than 100 Palestinians have been killed in internal violence since Hamas, which rejects Israel's right to exist, won parliamentary elections a year ago and wrested power from Fatah, which advocates peacemaking with the Jewish state.

Also on Sunday, Israel has declined to comment on reports of three Israelis suspected of spying for Israel in Egypt.

Egypt's state security prosecutor on Saturday charged a 26-year-old Egyptian and three Israelis with allegedly spying for Israel and harming national interests, a security official said.

The cabinet was also to approve the appointment of new Israeli chief of staff Gaby Ashkenazi.

Ashkenazy will replace Dan Halutz, who recently resigned his post after months of criticism on the war in Lebanon over the summer.

Israel's Prime Minister has said his country is "in the midst of a campaign against terror in Gaza."

During his cabinet meeting in Jerusalem on Sunday, Benjamin Netanyahu commented on the deadly violence that has taken place near the Israeli-Palestine border during the past months.

"It won't end with a single strike" Netanyahu said Sunday morning, adding, "our approach is clear, a complete ceasefire. We won't be satisfied with less than that."

He also stated that the Israeli military so far has destroyed "hundreds of Hamas military targets."

Three Palestinians were killed on Friday by Israeli fire during a Hamas-led protest along the Gaza border.

The incident came as Gaza's Hamas rulers and Israel honoured a cease-fire Friday that ended two days of an intense flare-up in violence.

During Sunday's meeting, Netanyahu also spoke about mass protests taking place in Tell Aviv on Saturday evening against the new Nation-State law, which critics say marginalises Israel's non-Jewish citizens.

"We received conclusive evidence of opposition against the existence of the state of Israel, and the necessity of the nation-state law. We saw PLO flags yesterday flying in the heart of Tel Aviv," Netanyahu told cabinet ministers.

Saturday's rally marked further fallout from the explosive Nation-State law and came a week after thousands of Druze, also members of the Arab minority, packed the same city square last week.

Israel's 1948 declaration of independence defined the country as a Jewish and democratic state and the government says the recently passed bill merely enshrines the country's existing character.

Israel and Iran are on a collision course but it remains to be seen whether the recent confrontation between the countries will spiral into a more protracted battle, an Israeli Middle East expert said on Thursday.

Efraim Inbar, president of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategic Studies, said Israel and Iran have conflicting aims in Syria, meaning they are bound to continue to clash.

"The Iranians want to establish a military presence that is threatening Israel, while Israel at the same time is trying to prevent - with the use of force - the establishment of such a presence," Inbar said.

The Israeli military on Thursday said it attacked nearly all of Iran's military installations in neighbouring Syria in response to an Iranian rocket barrage on Israeli positions in the occupied Golan Heights.

It is the most serious military confrontation between the two bitter enemies to date.

But it's unclear what the Iranian response to Israel's retaliation will be.

Inbar said US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the US from the Iran nuclear deal has weakened Iran and has strengthened Israel's power of deterrence.

Iran's ability to hit back further could be limited.

Its resources in Syria pale in comparison to the high-tech Israeli military and it could also be wary of military entanglement at a time when it is trying to salvage the international nuclear deal.

Iran has sent thousands of troops to back Syrian President Bashar Assad, and Israel fears that as the fighting nears an end, Iran and tens of thousands of Shiite militiamen will turn their focus to Israel.

HELEN MIRREN DISCUSSES HER LINKS TO ISRAEL AHEAD OF HOSTING THE GENESIS PRIZE

Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren said Wednesday she was a "believer" in Israel and rejected efforts to boycott it.

Mirren showered Israeli artists with praise and said she opposed both the efforts by pro-Palestinian groups to boycott them and the decision of some international artists to shun Israel.

"I think that art is an incredibly important way of communication," she said at a press event in Jerusalem. "The artists of the country are the people you need to communicate with and make a relationship with and learn from and build upon."

Mirren is in Israel to host the Genesis Prize, an award known as "the Jewish Nobel." The $1 million prize is being awarded to Israeli-American violinist Itzhak Perlman for his accomplishments as a musician, teacher and advocate for the disabled.

Mirren, who is not Jewish, has visited Israel several times, and has been a vocal critic of pro-Palestinian activists who have called for a cultural boycott of Israel. The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, known as BDS, has enlisted the support of Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters and has persuaded Elvis Costello, Lauren Hill and other performers to call off concerts in Israel.

Mirren, 70, is one of the few actors to have won the so-called Triple Crown - collecting an Oscar, Tony and four Emmy awards over the years. She received her Academy Award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 film "The Queen."

She played the role of a former Mossad agent in "The Debt," a remake of an Israeli film of the same name. And in "Woman in Gold," she played an elderly Jewish refugee who fought the Austrian government for a decade to reclaim an iconic Gustav Klimt painting stolen from her family by the Nazis.

She said her strong connection to Israel dates back to 1967, when she volunteered on a kibbutz, or collective farm, with her Jewish boyfriend at the time. She fondly recalled picking grapes and doing kitchen duty.

The prize was inaugurated in 2014 and is run in a partnership between the Israeli prime minister's office, the private Genesis Prize Foundation and the Jewish Agency, a nonprofit group with ties to the Israeli government. It is funded by a $100 million endowment set up by the foundation.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was the recipient of the first prize, and actor Michael Douglas was last year's winner.

Actor Alan Cumming is in Israel to support the country's gay and lesbian communities by taking part in the famed Tel Aviv Pride Parade.

Cumming a long-time gay rights activist will also be honoured with an award at the Tel Aviv Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

"I'm here really to support and celebrate the LGBT people of Israel and their right and respect that they have in this country," Cumming told The Associated Press during an interview in Jerusalem.

He pointed out to the difficulties Israel still faces and highlighted an attack by a religious extremist that left one dead during last year's Pride parade.

"That event in the Pride Parade last year (the stabbing of a woman by a religious extremist) was an example of that. It was celebrating a great positive thing in my opinion for Israel but at the same time you see a side of it that is an extremist side that does not agree with that and is kind of a using force, extreme force and out of nowhere kind of coming out and destroying, destroying the hope."

In 2009 Cumming was awarded an OBE from the Queen for his services to film, theatre and the arts as well as his activism for equal rights for the gay and lesbian community in America.

The British actor shot to fame in the CBS TV drama, "The Good Wife" in which he played political consultant Eli Gold."

Cumming and his character, were upped to season regulars from the second season of 'The Good Wife,' making this his first full-time gig on a U.S. television show.

Cumming said he was surprised that the show did so well on an American network (CBS) where he said there is less room to experiment.

"American TV) Networks are not known for their adventurous nature in terms of narratives and what it allows the writers to do. And what I really liked about the show was the fact that it didn't really tell the audience what to think."

He insisted he was happy to have left the character of Eli Gold behind and said the show wrapped up at the right time.

"It was time for it to end before it got watered down and started repeating itself. I think it bowed out just when it should have," Cumming said. "In a way I immediately left him (Eli) behind, I roughed up my hair and he was gone and that's what I did when the show was finished. Literally the next day I flew to Los Angeles and started a film. I feel it was something I just kind of fell into that suddenly 6 and a bit years later here I am. And I feel very proud that the show, on a network as well because networks are not known for their adventurous nature in terms of narratives and what it allows the writers to do. And what I really liked about the show was the fact that it didn't really tell the audience what to think. And I think most, so much of American media in general tells you what to think it kind of shoves its opinion down your throat. And with 'The Good Wife' I think it was very ambivalent and ambiguous in its message and that challenged the audience and made them think."

SOUNDBITE (English) Alan Cumming, Actor: "And sometimes you know the characters that you've really liked, towards the end of the whole season, Alicia the kind of, of character you've been rooting for was doing things that were not very nice. She became kind of a not very pleasant person towards the end in many ways. And I really liked that about it. It dared to upset the apple cart and make the audience question what they thought about certain issues. So, I'm very proud of it I had a great time and also I feel it was ready, it was time for it to end before it got watered down and started repeating itself. I think it bowed out just when it should have."

SOUNDBITE (English) Alan Cumming, Actor: "You know when I would finish work as Eli (Gold) every day I would zhush up all my hair, my horrible Eli middle-aged man hair, and I would take my tie off and put it up on my head, like this kind of like a hippie and I'd look ridiculous. I'd look like you know Eli had exploded. And I would walk off the set and everyone, all the crew would go "Alan there's been a mistake, you've got to go back and reshoot." I'd go hahaha." Actually sometimes that did happen. But, so in a way I immediately left him (Eli) behind, I roughed up my hair and he was gone and that's what I did when the show was finished. Literally the next day I flew to Los Angeles and started a film. It was a character that could not have been more different to Eli."

SOUNDBITE (English) Alan Cumming, Actor: "So after when I leave Tel Aviv and I arrive back to New York on Sunday, Monday I start a new move called "After Louis" a little independent film and that's why I've got this beard, because I have to look older. It's a little later and it's a book of photographs and stories that I've taken and written and it's called you've got to get bigger dreams. The title is from a story about my friend Eddie who was obsessed with Oprah Winfrey and I took him to an event that Oprah was being honoured at and he was desperate to get a photograph of her. Anyway I, it's a long, long complicated and hilarious story but ultimately a moment comes when Oprah is walking towards us and I've got the camera and I am trying to get to zoom out 'cause I was zooming away ino her table and she's coming towards us 'cause she's on her way to the loo. And Eddie sais 'She's coming quick, quick and I see him through the lens, and he turns to her, I hear him saying: 'Oprah may I have a picture with you it would be my dream.' And Oprah said: 'You've gotta get bigger dreams."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was among those in attendance, together with President Reuven Rivlin, Israel's military chief Lieutenant General Gadi Eisenkot and Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon.

Independence Day marks the formation of the modern Jewish state. For Jews, the establishment of Israel reinforced the homecoming of an exiled people with ties to the Holy Land going back thousands of years.

But Palestinians refer to the establishment of Israel, and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who either fled or were driven from their homes, as their "Nakba," or catastrophe.

The commemorations came as Israel copes with an eight month-long wave of Palestinian violence that has killed 28 Israelis and two Americans.

About 200 Palestinians have been killed in that time, most of them were attackers, according to the Israeli military.
