Brushstroke by brushstroke, Seyhan Arman gets ready to perform in one of her plays during Istanbul's Pride Week.

She's a 37-year-old transgender woman who makes a living writing and performing.

Arman, who hails from southern Turkey, says she always felt "different."

"Being an actress is what saved me. Basically, there was a path designed for me as Seyhan regarding gender identity. Acting freed me from that," she told The Associated Press.

For several years, Pride Week in Istanbul attracted tens of thousands of participants including Arman, making it one of largest gatherings celebrating gay, lesbian and transgender rights and diversity in the Muslim world.

That suddenly changed two years ago, when authorities, citing security concerns, banned gay and transgender pride events, chasing away shocked participants trying to converge on central Taksim Square with tear gas and water cannons.

The reversal, activists say, coincides with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan shedding his reformist past, taking an increasingly authoritarian line and raising Islam's profile in the officially secular country.

Up to 100,000 people took part in a march in 2014, making it one of the largest LGBTI (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and /or Intersex) Pride events in a Muslim nation.

The following year, authorities banned parades in a surprise move citing public order and dispersed the crowds.

In 2016, the events were again banned amid a spate of deadly attacks blamed on the Islamic State group or Kurdish militants.

Still, LGBTI activists tried to converge on Taksim leading to skirmishes with police.

Organisers believe that the celebrations in 2015 and 2016 were banned because they coincided with Islam's holy month of Ramadan.

Turkey's LGTBI community is braced for another confrontation with police during Sunday's Trans Parade March which has been banned by the Istanbul governor's office.

June 25 also coincides with the Muslim Eid holiday and also comes as Turkey is under a state of emergency following last year's failed coup attempt, which allows authorities to ban public gatherings.

The post-coup state of emergency has aggravated conditions for LGBTI individuals.

The emergency powers have been used to sack more than 100,000 people from government jobs - among them thousands of academics including a large number of whom were minority rights defenders.

"The fact that the existing government is not making necessary changes to the constitution (in favor of LGBTI individuals,) and the fact that there is negative discourse against us, may encourage people who are already (trans) phobic," said Arman.

Unlike other Muslim countries, homosexuality is not a crime in Turkey.

However, lesbian, gay, transgender activists say they lack legal protections and face widespread social stigma in the nation that is heavily influenced by conservative and religious values.

Deniz Sapka, a transgender woman originally from the southeastern Turkish province of Hakkari, is concerned about the lack of legal protection for her community.

Sapka is not her real surname but an alias she uses to maintain privacy.

She requested her face not be revealed to avoid recognition by family members.

"We can't fight (for the community's visibility) that much because the state is not developing new policies in this regard (LGBTI rights) and because there is no legislation (prohibiting) discrimination, no fundamental rights and freedoms," said the 27-year-old who works in the non-profit sector.

The Turkish government insists that there is no discrimination against individuals based on their sexual orientation, and that existing laws barring discrimination on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity or religion protect all citizens.

It also insists that perpetrators of hate crimes are prosecuted.

In his early years in office as prime minister, Erdogan worked to advance minority rights as part of efforts to join the European Union.

"Violence and discrimination against us starts at birth. It starts in the family, continues at university, continues at work," said Sapka, who describes life as a LGBTI individual in Turkey as an uphill battle.

"The state of emergency affected us greatly like it affected everyone else. But on the other hand, we are people who always experience a state of emergency. We have been experiencing these difficulties since birth."

Turkey's largest city, Istanbul, has been hit by a storm that has dumped up to a 60 centimetres (24 inches) of snow in some areas since Tuesday, wreaking havoc on roads.

Some 850 accidents occurred across Istanbul and visibility dropped to five metres (16 feet), according to the city's mayor in a statement posted on the municipality's website.

Around 5-thousand workers and 1,028 vehicles have been deployed citywide to help clear the snow, the mayor added.

The governor's office released a statement forbidding trucks and vehicles without snow chains from entering traffic.

Schools closed and flights were cancelled at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport, according to Turkey's state-run news agency, Anadolu.

Some residents of the city, which has a population of over 14 million, struggled to cope with difficult commutes to work.

But others thoroughly enjoyed the rare snowfall.

Turkey's weather authority predicts the cold, snowy weather in Istanbul will continue through Thursday.

Istanbul's governor on Tuesday said that the captured New Year's nightclub attack suspect is an Uzbekistan national who trained in Afghanistan.

Vasip Sahin said the suspect, captured late Monday, has confessed to carrying out the massacre and that his fingerprints matched those of the attacker.

He is believed to have entered Turkey in January 2016.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will on Friday inaugurate Istanbul's third and longest cross-continental bridge over the Bosporus.

The Yavuz Sultan Selim bridge links the city's Asian and European sides, includes a rail line connecting the two continents, and aims to ease traffic in the highly congested city of nearly 15 million.

Transport Minister Ahmet Arslan told The Associated Press that the construction of the 215 kilometres (134 miles) of highway and the suspension bridge cost 3.5 billion US dollars.

The bridge's name has been the source of some controversy.

Ottoman sultan Selim I, known as "Selim the Grim" in English, is said to have killed thousands of Alevis, a Muslim Shiite sect in mostly-Sunni Turkey.

But Arslan said the bridge was "not discriminatory".

Instead, the "unifying" structure was a symbol of Turkey's aim to "protect and look after everyone".

Former transport minister Binali Yildirim, now the country's prime minister, is also expected to attend Friday's ceremony.

The airport was partially reopened, with the information board inside the airport showing that about one third of scheduled flights have been cancelled, with a host of others delayed.

Some Istanbul hotel owners were offering accommodation to some of the thousands of travellers stranded in Istanbul after the attack.

Governor Vasip Sahin said the explosion occurred outside a local government office on Istiklal Street, which is also home to cafes, restaurants and foreign consulate buildings.

Sahin said one of the wounded victims died in hospital.

Istanbul began a three-day disaster drill on Tuesday, designed to test the preparedness of the sprawling city of more than 12 (m) million people to cope with a major earthquake.

Rescue teams rushed to help the injured amid overturned trains, a capsized ship and collapsed buildings, according to a scenario in which Turkey's largest city is hit by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake.

Across the city, officials were put through realistic approximations of the chaos of what could potentially be one of the world's worst natural disasters.

"By the exercises we are doing all around Istanbul, we are testing the field elements of rescue operations and the Disaster Management System,"

said Can Avci, Head of Istanbul Civil Defence, Search and Rescue Department.

Scientists estimate that if an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 or greater struck Istanbul, the devastation would be horrific.

Tens of thousands would die, countless others would be left injured or homeless and Byzantine or Ottoman buildings would be reduced to rubble,

they say.

The drill began at 11 am (0900 GMT) Tuesday with the Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory seismology centre reporting a 7.2-magnitude quake

near the Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara off Istanbul.

Rescue workers pulled fake corpses from rubble and firefighters and police sped to help rescue the injured from collapsed buildings.

In other scenarios children in a school on the Asian side of the city that is bisected by the Bosporus huddled under their desks for several seconds, then were ordered by their teachers to run outside to the courtyard.

Nearby, sirens wailed as rescue workers rushed to a derailed train.

With the whirring of cranes and saws and the sounds of hammers breaking glass, they pulled out mock dead and tended to the injured.

Rescue teams also assisted people trapped under the debris of a mosque and rushed to save passengers of a ship sinking in the Bosporus as part of the drill.

Scientists say the greatest loss of life in a real earthquake would come as a result of the collapse of tens of thousands of structures erected irresponsibly and mostly illegally in the past four decades.

Geologists have urged the Turkish government since 1999 - when two earthquakes west of Istanbul killed more than 18-thousand people - to tear down some 50-thousand buildings that would probably collapse if a big quake were to hit Istanbul.

The earthquake drill, organised by, Turkish authorities, is due to last until Thursday.

A Syrian refugee has become a successful businessman in Turkey after fleeing the civil back home.

Mohamed Nizar Bitar came to Istanbul with just one-thousand US dollars, but has opened a string of bakeries and restaurants.

Mohamed Nizar Bitar has made this business a success despite difficult circumstances.

He's a Syrian cook and entrepreneur who fled his homeland after the uprising erupted four years ago.

Bitar claims he was jailed twice by the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad for his political views.

And his family came to Istanbul from Damascus in March 2011 as the situation at home worsened.

He's one of almost 1.7 Syrian refugees living in Turkey, according to UNHCR figures.

"The Syrian uprising used to mean a lot to the Syrian people when it first started back in 2011," Bitar says.

"Now it means devastation and war and people being murdered all over Syria. For now, the future is bleak," he continues.

His family arrived in Turkey with just one-thousand US dollars and started their lives from scratch.

Bitar first took a job with the Free Syrian Army where he says he helped organise aid deliveries to refugees.

But then he joined a group of Syrians to launch a new business venture.

"My parents taught me how to cook at a young age. It was a hobby that then turned into a business idea when I grew up," he says.

"I had a fish restaurant in Syria in 2007. When I moved to Turkey I thought the best thing to do would be to get into the food sector," Bitar explains.

And business is booming.

This bakery in the Aksaray neighbourhood now produces 120,000 loaves of bread a day.

Bitar and his 22 partners have expanded the enterprise and now run six operations including another bakery and a chain of four restaurants.

And there are plans to open two more eateries soon.

It means he's been able to employ a large number of his countrymen.

"There are 312 people working with us. They work at the restaurants and the bakeries and they are mostly Syrian," says Bitar.

"Their education levels differ, 20 percent are very well educated - we have two doctors and three engineers. We try to place them in advertising or accounting," he continues.

Imad Kataf is one of Bitar's employees.

He worked as a cook in Damascus before leaving Syria in early 2014.

"I have been able to set up a home. I am looking after my wife and children. I am living a good life, thank God," he says.

Since the conflict began four years ago, more than 220,000 people have been killed and one million wounded.

Nearly four million Syrians have fled and registered as refugees in neighbouring countries, while another 7.6 million people are displaced inside Syria.

Bitar can not imagine returning home.

My dream is to go back to Syria after the events (conflict)," he says.

"But nothing on the horizon or in the future leads to the dream of going back. I think until the end of the world we'll be in the same situation," he continues.

Stressed, tired and wanting a break? Then a traditional Turkish bath might be the answer.

The Hamams of Istanbul offer relaxing massages amid stunning architecture that is comparable to Turkey's mosques.

STORYLINE:

Soft bubbles, warm stones and good company - the daily ritual of a Turkish Hamam.

But before undergoing a traditional 'bath' these bathers need to adapt their body to the Hamam's high temperature of 41 degrees celsius (105 degrees Fahrenheit).

After entering the hot area, visitors lie down on the central heating platform and relax.

Elcin Ceilik of Cemberlitas Hamam, explains what happens next.

"They go on the hot marble, after 20 or 30 minutes the attendant comes and scrubs them. They wash them with soap and bubbles. This is the traditional way of Turkish Bath," she says.

The 15-minute session starts with some intense scrubbing, during which dead skin cells are eliminated.

Then, attendants massage their customers and finish the procedure by washing them with bubbly soap.

Men and women attend single sex baths and are scrubbed by an attendant of the same sex.

At Cemberlitas Hamam, attendants wash between 7 and 8 people per day.

Ceilik says that anyone leaving a Turkish Bath will feel revitalized and fresh in their skin.

"You feel like a newborn, like a baby in your skin and also it's really useful for your social life," she says.

Historically, a whole social system revolved around the Turkish Baths.

Like the harem, this Roman and Byzantine tradition was adopted and then perfected by the Selcuk Turks, for whom the public bath took on an important role.

In Ottoman times men would discuss the latest news or make business arrangements.

In the morning food was brought over and consumed throughout the day.

People played music and danced, since the acoustics of the walls made it perfect for singing.

More significantly, the Hamam would enable women to openly socialize outside the closed doors of their house.

Young women were able to show off their bodies without a veil and older women would spot potential wives for their sons.

But the main aim was to relax and be pampered by an attendant.

Visitors to the Hamam like the experience.

This man who is just getting his head washed says he feels like he's in a cloud.

"It's like in the sky, it's really warm and it's really soft, it's like in a cloud," he says.

German tourist Daniel Schnake also enjoys the experience.

"I feel like reborn, it's quite relaxing and I'm feeling really good afterwards," he says.

Londoner Rahim Verjee says he's just had one of the best massages he's ever had.

"I think it's one of the best places I've been to and one of the best massages I've ever had because it just loosens your body and you feel like out of the world."

Also out of this world is the stunning architecture.

The oldest Turkish Bath in Istanbul, Cemberlitas Hamam was built by the architect Mimar Sinan, in 1584.

Sinan designed over 300 architectural structures as chief architect for the Ottoman sultans and is considered the greatest architect of the classical period of Ottoman architecture.

Renowned architect and Hamam expert Afife Batur says Hamams are just as well designed as mosques.

"They (Hamams) are just as architecturally rich as mosques and other religious structures. However they have never been protected like these. As a result the number of Hamam's has decreased over the years," she says.

One striking feature of the Hamam is the dome structure that covers the hot area.

As bathers lie down, they look up at what seems like a ceiling of stars.

In fact, they are small round glass capsules that let the daylight shine through. Very few people have been up on this roof and witnessed the ingenuity of the architects.

Batur explains that they are called feners, and are typical to Istanbul Hamams.

"The Hamams in Istanbul have a distinguished architectural style. The warm and hot areas of the baths have domes. They are all closed doors and are lit from above with small glass shapes called "feners"," she says.

Just as important as the roof is what goes on inside the Hamam to provide the searing temperatures.

Today, Ottoman style Hamams like this one follow a Roman heating tradition.

The baths are heated from below the surface with fire.

As the wood burns, the vapour channels through the Hamam's walls and escapes via these chimneys to the exterior.

Responsible for the heating at the Hamam, Yasar Sahin ensures that enough wood is added to the fire, so that bathers can enjoy a steady heat of 41 degrees celsius.

At Cemberlitas Hamam, a traditional style Turkish Bath, which includes a 15-minute body scrub and massage, costs 55TK ($36 US Dollars).

For maximum benefit the people here recommend a visit to a Turkish bath up to two times a month.

A senior official said emergency services have recovered three more bodies from the rubble of a collapsed eight-storey building in Istanbul, raising the death toll to six.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said Thursday the search for survivors would continue "uninterrupted."

Officials have not said how many more people are believed to be caught in the debris.

A woman who survived the Istanbul nightclub massacre during New Year's celebrations told on Wednesday how she survived the attack that left 39 people dead.

Twenty-nine-year-old Tuvana Tugsavul, a public relations representative for Reina nightclub where the attack occurred, says she was at the entrance and taking pictures of the club when the gunman arrived.

She showed The Associated Press the toilet cubicle she hid in with several others while the gunman was in the nightclub.

Police increased security around Istanbul on Wednesday and detained some 20 people with suspected links to the deadly New Year's Eve night club attack as the hunt for the gunman stretched into a fourth day.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the gunman had been identified, but did not name him.

Police set up checkpoints across Istanbul as security levels remained high.

They stopped cars and taxis, with passengers and drivers holding up their identifications while officers inspected the vehicles.

Funerals and memorial services were held for some of the victims of Tuesday's gunfire and suicide bombing attack on the Ataturk Airport in Istanbul in which 43 people were killed and more than 230 others injured.

Four members of one family have been confirmed as being among the Saudi nationals killed in the airport attack.

Saudi authorities identified them as Kerime, Meryem, Zehra and Huda Amiri.

With coffins wrapped in flags, prayers were said for the members of the Amiri family and a Turkish citizen, Habibullah Sefer in Istanbul on Thursday.

A 'modest fashion week' opened in Turkey on Friday with a splash of colors and a flurry of fabrics in an event that drew designers and models of conservative wear from around the world.

The two-day event kicked off with models hitting the catwalk at a historic railway station in Istanbul.

The event, featuring the work of 70 designers, is being hosted by Modanisa, a leading online retailer of Muslim fashion.

For decades Turkey has been a bastion of what's been described as militant secularism, and until 2013 there was a ban on wearing headscarves in public buildings.

But President Erdogan and his Islamist-leaning government are moving the country in a more conservative direction, and that's led to protests by secularists.

Modanisa CEO Kerim Ture said Turkish women who wear the hijab are becoming more active in society, and needed clothing choices that combine faith with style.

Franka Soeria, the Turkey representative of the Islamic Fashion and Design Council, said the country needed to relax the barriers between religious and secular people.

Soeria, who wears the hijab, said secular friends have discouraged her from going to certain neighbourhoods because her attire is too modest.

Gender expert Mary Lou O'Neil said the struggle partly stems from the growing visibility of religiously conservative women in public spaces - and the fear of secular women that this will evolve into restrictions on their dress and conduct.

And of course in Turkey historically that public space has been defined as something that should be devoid of religion. That it's a very militantly secular space. And I think that's in part the nature of the difficulty, the struggle is the more public visibility of religion. And because it's so visible upon the very bodies of conservative woman, it gets focused there a lot."

An explosion on Istanbul's main pedestrian shopping street has killed at least five people and injured 20 others, Istanbul's governor said on Saturday.

The explosion is believed to have been caused by a suicide bombing, according to local news reports.

The state-run Anadolu Agency reported that ambulances were responding to the explosion on Istiklal Street, which is also home to cafes, restaurants and foreign consulate buildings. Private NTV television said the explosion occurred outside a shopping mall.

The explosion comes as Turkey is on edge following two recent suicide bomb attacks in the capital, Ankara, which were claimed by a Kurdish militant group that is an offshoot of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.

Turkey had heightened security in Ankara and Istanbul in the run up to a Kurdish spring festival on 21 March.

The bomb was left on barriers on the overpass, said Atilla Aydiner, the mayor for Istanbul's Bayrampasa district.

The explosion occurred at 17:30 local time (15:30 GMT) at an overpass near the city's Bayrampasa subway station, on the European side of Istanbul.

Several ambulances and police vehicles were sent to the area.

STORYLINE:

Istanbul's governor said on Friday that police dismantled a group of al-Qaida militants in Turkey accused of suicide bombings that killed 62 people in Istanbul last month. But he said five or seven leading members were at large abroad.

Authorities have captured most of the alleged militants and seized about 500 kilogrammes (1,100 pounds) of explosives, including the military explosive RDX, according to Governor Muammer Guler who spoke at a news conference.

Istanbul Police Chief Celalettin Cerrah said the seized explosives were enough to make three or four truck bombs.

Guler said police also discovered more details about last month's attacks, which targeted two synagogues, a London-based bank and the British Consulate.

He said "all dimensions of the attacks from the planning to activating have been exposed by the Istanbul police. They were carried out by the elements of al-Qaida who were trying to create a structure in Turkey."

Guler said about 160 people have been detained and 35 of them have been charged for involvement in the bombing so far. Ten other suspects, including a key member identified as Harun Ilhan, were expected to face charges later on Friday.

Guler, however, said five or seven leading members of al-Qaida's structure in Turkey were at large and were believed to be abroad.

News reports have suggested that some members could be in Iraq, but Guler said it wasn't clear where they were.

But Guler said the group accused of the bombings was no longer a threat.

It was not clear whether there were any other alleged al-Qaida cells operating in Turkey.

Guler said al-Qaida had been organising in Turkey for the past year or two. He said most suspected members who were detained underwent training in Afghanistan or Pakistan.

Along with the explosives that were found, police seized five assault rifles, more than one-thousand rounds, 12 shotguns, three guns and two single-shot "pen guns" during the raids, according to a police statement.

Guler said Turkish security forces were still taking security measures for New Year's Eve as usual. A leaked police document earlier this week warned that terrorists may be planning attacks at against US, Israeli and eastern targets in Turkey in the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve.
