STORYLINE:

Istanbul's governor said on Friday that police dismantled a group of al-Qaida militants in Turkey accused of suicide bombings that killed 62 people in Istanbul last month. But he said five or seven leading members were at large abroad.

Authorities have captured most of the alleged militants and seized about 500 kilogrammes (1,100 pounds) of explosives, including the military explosive RDX, according to Governor Muammer Guler who spoke at a news conference.

Istanbul Police Chief Celalettin Cerrah said the seized explosives were enough to make three or four truck bombs.

Guler said police also discovered more details about last month's attacks, which targeted two synagogues, a London-based bank and the British Consulate.

He said "all dimensions of the attacks from the planning to activating have been exposed by the Istanbul police. They were carried out by the elements of al-Qaida who were trying to create a structure in Turkey."

Guler said about 160 people have been detained and 35 of them have been charged for involvement in the bombing so far. Ten other suspects, including a key member identified as Harun Ilhan, were expected to face charges later on Friday.

Guler, however, said five or seven leading members of al-Qaida's structure in Turkey were at large and were believed to be abroad.

News reports have suggested that some members could be in Iraq, but Guler said it wasn't clear where they were.

But Guler said the group accused of the bombings was no longer a threat.

It was not clear whether there were any other alleged al-Qaida cells operating in Turkey.

Guler said al-Qaida had been organising in Turkey for the past year or two. He said most suspected members who were detained underwent training in Afghanistan or Pakistan.

Along with the explosives that were found, police seized five assault rifles, more than one-thousand rounds, 12 shotguns, three guns and two single-shot "pen guns" during the raids, according to a police statement.

Guler said Turkish security forces were still taking security measures for New Year's Eve as usual. A leaked police document earlier this week warned that terrorists may be planning attacks at against US, Israeli and eastern targets in Turkey in the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Tradesmen in the Sultan Ahmet tourist district of Istanbul expressed their concern on Wednesday that business could be affected following a suicide bombing in the area.

A female suicide bomber blew herself up at a police station in the area on Tuesday, killing one policeman and wounding another, according to Turkish authorities.

Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin said the woman entered the police station and reported a missing wallet before detonating a bomb.

The leftist Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front, or DHKP-C, said it carried out the attack, calling it "an act of sacrifice."

Ahmet Balta has a carpet shop opposite the police station.

He was there when the attack occurred.

Balta told the Associated Press that traders in the area were concerned the incident could affect their businesses, with tourists scared away.

It is the second attack on police in a week in Istanbul.

On Thursday, police subdued a man after he threw grenades and fired a weapon at officers near the prime minister's offices.

STORYLINE:

Some Greek tourists in Istanbul say they feel safe and don't intend to leave after a suicide attacker detonated a bomb on the city's main shopping street on Saturday.

Istanbul's governor said five people were killed in the attack, while 36 people were reportedly wounded, including 12 foreign nationals.

Police swiftly sealed off the area as ambulances and a forensic team rushed to the scene.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Saturday's attack.

"The suspects were brought for initial questioning at around two p.m. (1200 GMT) today and the prosecutor finished with them at eight (1800 GMT). From eight o'clock till now (four a.m. or 0200 GMT) they have been questioned by the judge. Three have already been released by the prosecutor, and of the remaining 12, nine of them have been arrested and the other three of them have been released to return for a further questioning. They gave their testimonies and they explained their cases. In their testimonies they all said they weren't involved in this crime and none of them are involved in any kind of illegal organisation, but those thought to be suspect by the judge have been detained and the rest have been released."

STORYLINE:

A state security court on Tuesday charged nine suspected accomplices in last week's Istanbul suicide bombings with membership in an illegal organisation or aiding an illegal organisation, a defence lawyer said.

The charges are punishable by up to five years in prison.

After a nightlong session of questioning, the court after midnight charged one of the suspected accomplices with "aiding and abating an illegal organisation," and eight others with "membership in an illegal organisation," lawyer Selahattin Karahan said.

Three other suspects were released, Karahan added.

No trial date was set.

The charges, coming just five days after the latest bombings, indicated quick progress - or a desire to see quick results - in the investigation into a suspected Islamic terror cell believed to be behind the spate of attacks that left 57 dead.

Four other people were released on Monday, apparently for lack of evidence.

Meanwhile, Istanbul city Governor Muammer Guler confirmed police had identified the man who rammed an explosive-packed pickup truck into the city's British Consulate and other "culprits" in the attack.

Uniformed police escorted 15 of his suspected accomplices into a state security court for questioning by the state prosecutor. Twelve were later questioned by a judge
