Welcome to Istanbul, where East meets West in a unique multicultural atmosphere.

Tourists from around the world flock to this historic city to experience a taste of the orient in a Western setting.

STORYLINE

The Call to Prayer at the Blue Mosque.

Opposite, the Hagia Sophia, a former Orthodox patriarchal basilica, later a mosque and now a museum.

We're in the heart of Istanbul, in the old Sultanahmet district.

The former hippodrome of Constantinople is an essential part of any tourist trip.

The surrounding streets offering a romantic impression of oriental life.

Carpet sellers drink Turkish tea (cay), and the smell of donner kebab wafts down the street. .

Tourists are everywhere, and so are stalls selling souvenirs, from jewellery to ceramics, textiles and carpets.

The Grand Bazaar is a shopping heaven, but also a labyrinth out of which most visitors emerge with more than they had planned to buy.

Aysem Erginoglu Michaelson is a German-Turkish tour guide who has been showing people from all over the world around Istanbul for 22 years.

She says tourists are attracted to the city's cultural diversity.

"Well they definitely are very attracted from the concept of the East is meeting the West. And this is the ideal place for where they can sort of link to the culture in a way because they know some about the past of Turkey and Turks, like in terms of Ottomans and in terms of the appetite of culture. And still it's a modern country, but they can find the oriental flair over here and they can feel this exotic atmosphere which they like a lot," she says.

At the numerous Istanbul bazaar stalls, haggling is encouraged.

Popular items to take home are these Turkish glass lights (10 Turkish Lira / $6.3 US Dollars) as well as scarves and spices.

But why spend all day in the dark mazes of the bazaars when the sun is shining outside?

To make the most of Istanbul's Mediterranean climate, a day trip to the Princes Islands is a good option.

The nine islands lie off the Asian coast of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara.

A 90-minute-ride on a passenger ferry takes you to B�y�kada ('big island'), the largest of the Princes Islands at 5.46 square kilometres (3.39 square miles).

Here, people are greeted by a relaxed atmosphere, which seems miles away from the buzz of Istanbul.

It seems like time has stood still on B�y�kada: old men are making flower hairbands.

Horse-drawn carriages offer the main means of transport - a romantic way to explore the small island.

Hasan Unal is the Horse Drawn Carriage Drivers Union Leader.

"Horse-drawn carriages are the primary source of transportation on the island. There are 225 horse carriages in this Island which operate all year round," he says.

In the 19th and early 20th century when steamboats became common, the Princes Islands became a popular retreat for Istanbul's wealthy residents, who built wooden houses on the islands.

A remnant of these grand times is the Splendid Palace Hotel.

Built in 1908, the historic building has welcomed celebrities as well as Ataturk, Turkey's first president.

Here, you can get a room with a view.

The hotel has 70 rooms and 4 suites and can accommodate 134 guests.

Prices range from $80 US Dollars for a single room ($90 US Dollars sea view) to $210 US Dollars for a four person suite.

But Splendid Palace Hotel is rarely full.

Hotel manager Omer Hayyam explains that most tourists are daytrippers who leave the island in the evening.

"The tourism is based on day to day tourism. Since it's so close to the city, people tend to go back to the city as opposed to staying over for a few nights," he says.

The recession has impacted on tourism to Turkey.

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, tourism income decreased by 2.2% in the first quarter of 2010 (January, February and March) compared to the same period of the previous year.

Tourism income reached more than $2 billion US dollars ($2,413,524,810 in total ) in the first quarter of 2010, a total of 3,752,720 people visiting.

$1,737,060,723 US Dollars of this income was obtained from foreign visitors, $676,464,087 US Dollars was from Turkish citizens residing outside Turkey.

Overall, tourism income in Turkey in 2009 was ($21 Billion) $21,249,334,582 US Dollars, with a total of 32,006,149 people visiting.

Erkunt Oner, the CEO of cruise tour operator Tura Turizm, says the type of people visiting has changed since the global economic crisis.

"We have observed a certain decline of the quality of passengers, but not on the quantity of passengers. All the ships were full as they used to be but the quality, I think the rates have been decreased so the quality of the participants were a bit lower than the previous years," he says.

Tourist guide Aysem Erginoglu Michaelson says, although she was initially worried, she didn't feel the recession.

It might help that Istanbul is this year's European Capital of Culture 2010, attracting additional tourists interested in the vast cultural programme the city has to offer.

Sally Lennon and Locky Markusson, tourists from the United States, say they really love their trip to Istanbul, especially the shopping.

"A lot of diversity, great shopping, we keep thinking we're doing cultural things, we get side-tracked with shopping," says Markusson.

Eugenio Stanci from Italy says he likes the city's diversity.

"I think it's an exciting city and a melting pot of cultures, I like it," he says.

Australian tourist Paul Cost says he is impressed by Istanbul's history.

The recent unrest in Turkey doesn't seem to have prevented tourists from flocking to the centuries - old city of Istanbul, the spot where a peaceful sit -in to protect a park spiralled into nationwide anti-government demonstrations.

"Once everyone heard that we will be coming to Turkey, or Istanbul, they said 'You must be careful, you're crazy?' But unfortunately, you know, you booked these things a long time ahead. You don't have the flexibility to change. It has affected where we spend time here, we won't going to Taksim Square," said Australian tourist, Adam Karras.

But Karras said the inconvenience has been minor. For the most part, demonstrations and clashes have been localised, mostly around the Taskim Square area.

Two weeks ago in an effort to disperse protesters staging a sit in to save Istanbul's Gezi Park from being revamped, police raided the crowd with water cannon and tear gas.

The event galvanised a nation, and soon calls for the resignation of Turkey's prime minister echoed across the country.

Once demonstrations started, the United States department issued a warning to its citizens living in Turkey, promoting caution.

On Wednesday, the US ambassador to Turkey publicly reassured those wishing to travel here that it was a safe destination.

"I believe this is a friendly country to the United States, it's a good place for American trade and investment, business, visitors, tourism. And I intend to enjoy the summer here in Turkey," said Francis Ricciardone.

Tourists in Istanbul continued enjoying their holiday on Wednesday, a day after a car bomb attack killed 11 people during the morning rush hour.

Thirty-six people were also wounded in Tuesday's blast, which involved a car bomb hitting a police vehicle.

The outlawed rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, have targeted police and military personnel since July, when a fragile peace process between the rebels and the government collapsed.

Fans of a romantic novel by author Orhan Pamuk are being urged to travel to Turkey to complete the book.

The 83 chapters in "Kemal and Fusun" are on paper, but at the end of the book there's a free a ticket to a museum in Istanbul that readers are invited to visit in order to fully finish the novel.

Housed in an old building in the Cukurcuma neighbourhood of Beyoglu, Istanbul, the Museum of Innocence is dedicated to a love story.

Created by Nobel laureate, Orhan Pamuk the museum is an object-based version of the fictional love story between Kemal and Fusun, the two main characters of his novel of the same name published in 2008.

According to the author, the book and the museum work in tandem, so although the story ends at the end of the book, "Kemal and Fusun" will not have been fully completed until readers have also visited the museum.

In May the museum won the European Museum of the Year prize for its innovative concept.

Boxes and cabinets are filled to the brim. There are old photos, women's clothes, shoes and bijouterie, vintage watches, newspaper clippings, a typewriter, glasses of tea and raki (national Turkish liqueur), hair combs, old movie posters and figurines.

The objects reflect Kemal's obsession with collecting everything that evokes his brief and passionate romance with his distant cousin Fusun.

They are also a daily life catalogue of the second half of the 20th Century in Istanbul - the setting of Pamuk's novels.

Some of the pieces have been created especially for the exhibition.

"An anatomical chart of love pains" is an example. As is the framed collection of 4,213 lipstick stained cigarette butts arranged in chronological order and supposedly smoked by Fusun.

But most of the pieces come from Pamuk, who spent three decades collecting vintage objects that inspired him from friends' homes and junk shops.

The author developed his idea for the novel and the museum in parallel. He has personally arranged the collection according to the 83 chapters of his book.

Museum director, Onur Karaoglu says that one of the main reasons for receiving the European award was the novelty of the concept:

"It suggests that the idea of a museum doesn't have to be that big and it can be a much more humble thing. The idea that through sharing the stories in every household, a museum can be built, is very innovative."

Pamuk's books have been translated into 60 languages and he has many international fans.

Organisers say 70,000 people, most of them tourists from Europe and the U.S., have visited the museum since it opened in April 2012.

Karaoglu says visitors are mostly curious about the photographs on show:

"Are there photographs of the main characters Kemal and Fusun in the museum? If so, where are they? How can we see them? Display and images that are inside is the main thing visitors ask about. Other than that, the museum has ties with both reality and fiction."

For visitors that have not read the book, the museum becomes an emotive trip to old Istanbul.

But the original idea of the author was that the reading of his book should finish with a visit to the museum.

A ticket placed in the 83rd chapter of the book allows readers to enter the museum for free.

"Since this museum is actually based on a novel, at the end of the book there is a ticket. If visitors come to the museum with their book we stamp the ticket and they can visit for free. And actually the book finishes after visiting the museum. This is the first time such a project has been carried out in the world," says Karaoglu.

Didi Wenzl-Thoma, a German tourist, says that she has been a fan of Pamuk for a long-time:

"I read the book and I listened to the audio book. I am really enthusiastic about it. I am very pleased that this museum has opened. It is such a nice idea to have the novel and then the museum."

The collection is still a work in progress. The management team say it is setting up collaborations with international artists in order to fill some of the empty cabinets next year.

Istanbul's cultural attractions remained open Tuesday with unconcerned tourists still lining up for entrance tickets despite a fifth day of violent anti-government protests in several parts of the city.

Tourists at the Hagia Sofia mosque said that they came to Turkey even though they knew the protests were happening.

"We heard about the protests but we didn't see that as a threat to where we were going on anything, we just came on, we didn't change any of our plans," said American businessman John Bradberry.

At nearby the Sultan Ahmed mosque, Gianluca Cassandro, a 25-year-old radiology technician from Italy, said he had heard about the protests the day before he left Venice, but decided to enjoy his holidays in Turkey nonetheless.

"We called our ministry of foreign affairs to know about the situation here. We were told that the situation in most of the cities was quiet, and the protest was limited to (Taksim) square," he said.

Many of the city's key tourist attractions are well away from the main centres of protest for now.

The anti government demonstrations entered a sixth consecutive day on Wednesday marked by further clashes between police and protesters in Istanbul and the capital Ankara.

Protester have been calling for the resignation of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Protests have been directed at what critics say is Erdogan's aggressive and authoritarian style of governing.

Clashes between police and demonstrators have been severe at times since the demonstrations erupted five days ago where, according to a human rights group, injuring at least 1,300 people.

The number of tourists visiting Turkey dropped by 10 percent in February compared to last year, in a worrying sign for the country whose economy relies on tourism revenues.

Tourism Ministry figures released on Tuesday showed that 1.24 million foreigners arrived in Turkey last month, down from 1.38 million recorded last year.

The drop comes has Turkey - a neighbour of Syria - has been hit by a series of attacks, including two in Istanbul that killed 12 German tourists in January, and three Israelis and an Iranian earlier this month.

Israel issued a travel warning on Monday advising its citizens to leave Turkey.

An economist at an investment firm which analyzes tourism statistics said her company would be closely watching the number of German visitors traveling to Turkey in the coming months.

A waiter in one of Istanbul's main tourist destinations - Sultanahmet Square - said he has lost half his customers, more than the ten percent drop reported on Tuesday.

A row with Moscow over Turkey's downing of a Russian plane has also resulted in fewer visitors from Russia.

Tourists in Turkey considered leaving the country on Tuesday after a series of explosions at the height of the tourist season targeted resorts on the Mediterranean coast on Sunday and Monday.

Monday's explosion in the centre of Antalya, one of Turkey's most popular Mediterranean resorts, killed three people and injured at least 20 others.

It came less than a day after bomb attacks struck Marmaris, another Mediterranean resort, and an Istanbul neighbourhood.

In the Marmaris attack on Sunday, a bomb placed on a minibus exploded injuring 10 British tourists and 11 Turks.

In Istanbul tourists displayed a mix of reactions.

"I wouldn't cancel, it is just risky today, but nevertheless I feel safe here, I trust the security system, police and I hope nothing will happen," Robert Menschick, a Polish tourist said.

"We thought about all the different options, should we go, should we delay the trip, but we decided to go. Might not have another chance like this," Sviatoslav Voloshin, a tourist from the United States said.

A militant Kurdish group that has threatened to target Turkey's vital tourism industry, claimed responsibility for the two bomb attacks on Sunday night and again warned tourists against coming to Turkey.

The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, a small militant group believed to be an offshoot of the much larger Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, claimed responsibility for that blast and an earlier attack in Istanbul that injured six people on Sunday.

Kurdish militants have been fighting for autonomy in southeastern Turkey since 1984 and most PKK attacks have been limited to the largely Kurdish southeast.
