Brushstroke by brushstroke, Seyhan Arman gets ready to perform in one of her plays during Istanbul's Pride Week.

She's a 37-year-old transgender woman who makes a living writing and performing.

Arman, who hails from southern Turkey, says she always felt "different."

"Being an actress is what saved me. Basically, there was a path designed for me as Seyhan regarding gender identity. Acting freed me from that," she told The Associated Press.

For several years, Pride Week in Istanbul attracted tens of thousands of participants including Arman, making it one of largest gatherings celebrating gay, lesbian and transgender rights and diversity in the Muslim world.

That suddenly changed two years ago, when authorities, citing security concerns, banned gay and transgender pride events, chasing away shocked participants trying to converge on central Taksim Square with tear gas and water cannons.

The reversal, activists say, coincides with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan shedding his reformist past, taking an increasingly authoritarian line and raising Islam's profile in the officially secular country.

Up to 100,000 people took part in a march in 2014, making it one of the largest LGBTI (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and /or Intersex) Pride events in a Muslim nation.

The following year, authorities banned parades in a surprise move citing public order and dispersed the crowds.

In 2016, the events were again banned amid a spate of deadly attacks blamed on the Islamic State group or Kurdish militants.

Still, LGBTI activists tried to converge on Taksim leading to skirmishes with police.

Organisers believe that the celebrations in 2015 and 2016 were banned because they coincided with Islam's holy month of Ramadan.

Turkey's LGTBI community is braced for another confrontation with police during Sunday's Trans Parade March which has been banned by the Istanbul governor's office.

June 25 also coincides with the Muslim Eid holiday and also comes as Turkey is under a state of emergency following last year's failed coup attempt, which allows authorities to ban public gatherings.

The post-coup state of emergency has aggravated conditions for LGBTI individuals.

The emergency powers have been used to sack more than 100,000 people from government jobs - among them thousands of academics including a large number of whom were minority rights defenders.

"The fact that the existing government is not making necessary changes to the constitution (in favor of LGBTI individuals,) and the fact that there is negative discourse against us, may encourage people who are already (trans) phobic," said Arman.

Unlike other Muslim countries, homosexuality is not a crime in Turkey.

However, lesbian, gay, transgender activists say they lack legal protections and face widespread social stigma in the nation that is heavily influenced by conservative and religious values.

Deniz Sapka, a transgender woman originally from the southeastern Turkish province of Hakkari, is concerned about the lack of legal protection for her community.

Sapka is not her real surname but an alias she uses to maintain privacy.

She requested her face not be revealed to avoid recognition by family members.

"We can't fight (for the community's visibility) that much because the state is not developing new policies in this regard (LGBTI rights) and because there is no legislation (prohibiting) discrimination, no fundamental rights and freedoms," said the 27-year-old who works in the non-profit sector.

The Turkish government insists that there is no discrimination against individuals based on their sexual orientation, and that existing laws barring discrimination on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity or religion protect all citizens.

It also insists that perpetrators of hate crimes are prosecuted.

In his early years in office as prime minister, Erdogan worked to advance minority rights as part of efforts to join the European Union.

"Violence and discrimination against us starts at birth. It starts in the family, continues at university, continues at work," said Sapka, who describes life as a LGBTI individual in Turkey as an uphill battle.

"The state of emergency affected us greatly like it affected everyone else. But on the other hand, we are people who always experience a state of emergency. We have been experiencing these difficulties since birth."

Istanbul's governor on Tuesday said that the captured New Year's nightclub attack suspect is an Uzbekistan national who trained in Afghanistan.

Vasip Sahin said the suspect, captured late Monday, has confessed to carrying out the massacre and that his fingerprints matched those of the attacker.

A woman who survived the Istanbul nightclub massacre during New Year's celebrations told on Wednesday how she survived the attack that left 39 people dead.

Twenty-nine-year-old Tuvana Tugsavul, a public relations representative for Reina nightclub where the attack occurred, says she was at the entrance and taking pictures of the club when the gunman arrived.

She showed The Associated Press the toilet cubicle she hid in with several others while the gunman was in the nightclub.

Police increased security around Istanbul on Wednesday and detained some 20 people with suspected links to the deadly New Year's Eve night club attack as the hunt for the gunman stretched into a fourth day.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the gunman had been identified, but did not name him.

Police set up checkpoints across Istanbul as security levels remained high.

They stopped cars and taxis, with passengers and drivers holding up their identifications while officers inspected the vehicles.

Turkish police captured the gunman who allegedly carried out the deadly New Year's nightclub attack in Istanbul, with officials saying Tuesday that he's an Uzbekistan national who trained in Afghanistan and confessed to the massacre.

The alleged attacker was caught late on Monday in a police operation at a luxury residential complex in Istanbul.

One nighbour said he felt very bad "lliving in the same building with a person like that."

The man was being questioned by police, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told reporters in Ankara.

Yildirim expressed hope that the interrogation would unveil the "forces" behind the attack, which killed 39 people and has already been claimed by the Islamic State group.

A Syrian activist and her US-born journalist daughter have been killed in their home in Istanbul, relatives and Turkish media said Friday - the latest victims of attacks targeting Syrian activists in Turkey.

The bodies of 60-year-old Orouba Barakat, from Idlib in northern Syria, and her only daughter, 23-year-old Halla Barakat, were discovered late Thursday, state-run Anadolu Agency reported, after friends contacted police when the journalist didn't show up for work.

Anadolu said the bodies were stabbed.

Homicide officers are investigating the deaths.

The Hurriyet newspaper said police believe the women were killed two or three days ago.

There have been four previous killings of Syrian journalists in Turkey, which the Islamic State group has claimed.

A fifth journalist survived two attacks.

The two women were related to the Barakat family from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, whose three members were also killed in 2015 by their neighbour, said Orouba Barakat's sister, Shaza Barakat, who came from Syria to attend the funeral.

She said her sister and her family had been critical of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government and suggested that the government may be behind the killings.

Orouba had left Syria in the 1980s, worked as a journalist in Arab newspapers, covering economic and political affairs.

She later traveled to America where she gave birth to her daughter.

She is separated from her US-Syrian husband, a physician in the United States, Shaza Barakat said.

Shaza Barakat said Halla was born in North Carolina and was related to Deah Barakat, his wife, Yusor Abu-Salha, and her sister, Razan Abu-Salha from Chapel Hill who were killed in 2015 by their neighbour who said he had "disdain for religion."

Turkish police continued to investigate the New Year's Eve attack at a popular Istanbul nightclub, which killed at least 39 people and wounded many others.

The attacker, armed with a long-barrelled weapon, killed a policeman and a civilian outside the Reina club before entering and firing at people partying inside, Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin said.

An estimated 600 people were celebrating inside the club, which is often frequented by famous locals, including singers, actors and sports stars.

Several shocked revellers were seen fleeing the scene after the shooting and the music fell silent.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for what authorities immediately called a terrorist attack.

Turkish officials did not comment on the possible identity or motives of the gunman.

Eyewitness Sinem Uyanik told the Associated Press she saw several bodies inside the Istanbul nightclub that was attacked during New Year's celebrations.

Her husband Lutfu Uyanik was wounded in the attack.

"On my left, right, everyone was crying," she said outside Istanbul's Sisli Hospital.

Her husband was not in serious condition despite his wounds.

An eyewitness on Sunday described explosions and people running over each other as they fled from the night club attack in Istanbul that killed at least 39 people on New Year's morning.

Ismail Celebi, a musician, said he was across the street when he heard screams and a loud bang before seeing people stepping on each other as they ran from the scene.

Celebi said it appeared to him that most of those inside were either dead or wounded, while many of those escaping carried large wounds.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Wednesday expressed his sympathy for the victims of a suicide attack in Istanbul and said four more suspects were detained as part of the investigation into the incident.

He didn't provide further details about them.

Earlier Turkish authorities said they arrested five people suspected of direct links to the deadly suicide bombing that killed 10 Germans in Istanbul's main tourist area.

Turkish authorities have identified Tuesday's bomber as a Syrian man born in 1988 who had recently entered Turkey, and officials say he had links to the Islamic State group.
