The Japanese can do it, and the London Judo Society has a number of members learning to do it: Kendo, a ritual form of fencing in which the armour and accoutrements are as much part of the ritual as the actual sport itself. We were very honoured to witness a demonstration. By the way, although bamboos are used, the Kendo expert would use a sword.

PUGH SWAPS THE CATWALK FOR GIANT VIDEO SCREEN

British designer Gareth Pugh presented his fall/winter 2009-2010 collection not on a catwalk but on a video screen Wednesday (04 MAR09) in Paris.

The 27 years-old Pugh said it was out of perfectionism, not budget restrictions that he chose to bypass the traditional runway.

"It's a lot more freeing for me because obviously with a catwalk show, you can't have all of those effects; you can't inflate the clothes. You loose a lot." Pugh said.

Guests were seated on wooden benches in front of a giant black cloth. Smoke filled the ground before the video started.

The Daily Telegraph's Fashion Director Hillary Alexander praised the designer for being "very forward thinking" and "completely following his own instincts." "It was the most amazing film", she said

Pugh's floor-length pleated pant-skirt was a favourite of Alexander: "I love the big wide, wide trousers, because they are very similar to what the Japanese Kendo fighters wear."

Pugh's collection conveyed a feeling of combativeness and roughness using black leather and nubby metal spikes over garments.

This harshness was somewhat counter-balanced with balloon-like jackets which are one of the designer's trademarks.

A darling of fashion editors ever since his first show in London for fall 2006, Pugh said he was inspired by a group of gypsy women he saw in London: "They looked a little bit like mafia, so it was this whole gypsy mafia thing, so you know you have the layering and kind of the, the sort of femininity but quite hardness to these ladies."

Negotiations go on into night

US trade representative Mickey Kantor was preparing for late-night

negotiations with his Japanese counterpart in Geneva on Monday

(26/6) in a bid to resolve the growing auto trade dispute.

Japanese Trade Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto declined to comment when

he arrived Monday evening for the talks. Hashimoto was sent to

Switzerland by Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama and other Cabinet

ministers with a renewed public resolve to stand firm in the face

of the US sanctions threat. He and Kantor are trying to resolve

the dispute before a Wednesday night deadline set by Washington

for imposing punitive trade sanctions on Japanese luxury cars. The

two trade chiefs were set to begin their talks at 8.30pm Geneva

time (1830gmt), and sources close to the talks have predicted they

will have to work right up to the deadline if they are to strike a

deal. Hashimoto said it would be "difficult" to reach an accord

before the June 28 date for threatened US sanctions against

Japanese cars, measures involving nearly $6 billion. Kantor said

on his arrival late Monday that nothing less than a complete deal

would satisfy the United States.

The two top negotiators in the US-Japan auto feud squared off Monday in a final push to avoid punitive tariffs that would price luxury Japanese cars out of the American market.

US Trade Representative Mickey Kantor made no predictions on the outcome of the Geneva talks.

But Japan's Trade Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto said it would be "difficult" to reach an accord before the Wednesday deadline for threatened US sanctions against Japanese cars worth nearly six (b) billion dollars.

US Trade Representative Mickey Kantor said on his arrival in Geneva Sunday that nothing less than a complete resolution to the auto dispute before Wednesday's midnight deadline could stop the sanctions on Japanese luxury cars.

But his opposite number, Ryutaro Hashimoto, was sent to Geneva by Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama and other cabinet ministers who publicly declared Japan's intention to stand firm against the US sanctions threat.

Both sides are playing a high-stakes game.

Both governments have domestic political problems and risk losing face if they make

compromises.

And both said they were holding firm.

At the Noga Hilton hotel, the two negotiators made it clear to reporters that their meeting, though amicable, would be hard.

Kantor presented his counterpart with a particularly relevant gift - a traditional Japanese Kendo sword.

"Now I bought this especially for you, now in Kendo and I want everyone to know the minister is a great practitioner, in Kendo the standards are courage and honesty sand integrity and patience and you represent all of this and I want you to have this."

But the Japanese minister made it clear before leaving for more talks that the Japanese stance remained the same - they would not allow the Americans to force them into concessions they might regret.

The United States insists that Japan open its auto market to foreign cars and car parts or be hit with tariffs that would virtually price almost six (b) billion US dollars worth of Japanese luxury cars beyond US consumers' pocketbooks.

Tokyo says the sanctions are illegal because they are unilateral and violate international trade rules.

Japan especially objects to "numerical targets" and says it cannot force Japanese companies to buy American.

Sources close to the talks have predicted negotiators will have to work right up to the deadline if they are to strike a deal.

It's an unexpected sight - fighters in full body armour and chain mail swinging olden-style weapons at each other in a Tokyo dojo.

But Japan is one of three Asian countries where the sport of Medieval Martial arts has a presence, thanks to the efforts of an American man.

Jay Noyes, a Missouri native, has lived in Japan for the last 20 years.

Six years ago, he decided to take what was just a hobby, out of the public parks where he used to practise, and set up the Japan Armoured Battle League (JABL) dojo in central Tokyo.

Noyes has always had a passion for medieval martial arts since he was little and used to build his own wooden swords for fun.

While at university, he found a more structured environment in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), through which he was able to pursue his passion.

Medieval martial arts have a rich culture and history, Noyes says.

"In the past 20 years, there have been more and more translations of medieval textbooks for 15th century sword work and 16th century sword work and so as this development happened, I became more and more interested in trying to recreate authentic medieval martial arts."

The stereotype of medieval martial arts is of clunky slow movements but Noyes says there are sophisticated martial arts techniques from this period in time.

He has a particular interest in the 15th century German style two-handed sword fighting, and he compares it to the more well known kung-fu and kendo arts.

But he also teaches, and studies, light armoured and heavy armoured combat.

Popular culture, through movies, and Olympic sports like fencing have constrained the way people think about sword work, according to Jay.

These styles in fact have no connections with medieval martial arts and Noyes says that while he welcomes people from all fighting backgrounds at his dojo, he has gone to great pains to keep away influences from other martial arts in his teaching.

There is a tight community of teachers around the world who are always in touch and share information about how medieval martial arts techniques should be interpreted, to make sure that what they are teaching is as accurate as possible.

In his early years in Japan, Noyes used to practice on military bases, with SCA groups, and later in public parks off-bases to try and get more Japanese people involved.

The average JABL member is between 25 to 35 years of age and professional, the two most predominant groups being computer programmers and artists.

As the number of fighters at his dojo increased, Jay organised the first JABL tournament in Japan, called "Steel", hosting it in a popular night-club in the young Shibuya district of Tokyo.

Preparing for this event has not been easy.

Procuring armour and weapons for so many fighters to fight at once was the main challenge.

Local laws also needed to be taken into consideration.

For example, in Japan, swords are illegal and therefore he created sword-like steel weapons (which he refers to as sword simulators) that are actually hollow and have a little hole at the tip.

Other weapons such as axes and halberds, are legal in Japan, so in these cases, the real thing is used.

Armour is purchased from a variety of countries such as the US, Russia, and Ukraine.

Most helmets come from Canada while India is the best place to buy riveted chain armour.

A lot of these weapons or weapon simulators, were only delivered to Japan a few days before the actual event.

This presented a challenge for the members, many of whom worked through the night to prepare their armour for the tournament the next day.

There are three medieval groups in Japan that are part of JABL and one of them uses Japanese-style armour.

Traditionally Japanese armour is not strong enough for this kind of combat and there are problems finding suppliers in Japan who can make parts for people of a certain size.

"Black Tanaka", a fighter for the Japanese team, Kuroganeshu, was one of those, assembling his Japanese-style armour at the JABL offices with the help of other staff, the night before the Steel tournament.

"I did try to get armour from Japan but in the past it seems people were much shorter and I heard that the maximum size these armours are made are for people up to 165 centimetres in height but I'm 178 cm tall, so I just couldn't find the right size for me," Black Tanaka, who is a driver by profession, says.

Another fighter, Anthony Dolan, was also assembling his favourite weapon, a pole-axe, the night before the event.

For Noyes, the tournament was a great success and he was relieved that there had been only a couple of light injuries.

"Fighting Steel is not just about having the toy and getting into the game. It's getting in there knowing that the other guy has something that is capable of hurting you and that they are quite willing to hit you just as hard as they can to knock you down. And as long as it hits your armour, it's going to hurt but you're probably going to be okay, but nobody is completely covered."

Perfect armour is perfect immobility, he adds.

The tournament was divided into three categories: 'sword and shield', 'long sword' and 'polearm'.

There was also a prize for the winning team since all fighters took part in three rounds of melee fighting.

The winning group here was the "Dracones", Noyes' team.

Dracones fighter, Jun Tanaka (or "Red Tanaka" as he is also called), says he was elated by the experience, especially the chance to knock over the "biggest fighter", the 2-metre (6 foot 6 inch) tall "Ami" in the melee.

Noyes is setting his sights on the IMCF world championship in Spain where he will be taking a team from Japan with fighters from all three groups.

"If you think of martial arts in terms of naturalistic and unnatural, okay natural and unnatural styles, with the idea that karate and kendo are natural styles - holding the centre line, moving into the centre line, with very natural, instinctive motions, that have been cleaned up and clarified to maximise the power. On the other hand you have aikido or kung-fu which relies on techniques that you wouldn't normally think of using as a, I mean it's not your natural reaction to do some of these motions - but they are logically derived techniques that create the effect that you want. German two-handed sword is much more like kung-fu or aikido than it is like kendo."

STORYLINE:

Britain's Prince Charles said on Tuesday that the current financial crisis should not distract the world from the larger issue of global warming.

"The credit crunch is rightly a preoccupation of vast significance and importance. But we take our eye off the climate crunch at our peril," he said in a speech at a science museum in Tokyo.

The heir to the British throne is visiting the world's second-largest economy for the first time since 1970.

His arrival coincides with plunging global markets and recession fears.

The prince has made saving the environment the theme of his trip, and spoke on Tuesday after viewing exhibits related to global warming at Japan's National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation.

He called on advanced nations to cut carbon emissions by 70 to 80 percent by the year 2050.

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were greeted by Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at the Imperial palace.

Earlier on Tuesday Prince Charles received a warm welcome in front of the Tokyo museum, as dozens of schoolchildren waving British flags greeted his motorcade.

He sprinkled some local dialect in his speech, beginning with "Ladies and gentlemen, konnichi wa," using the Japanese phrase for "good afternoon".

He also emphasised the business ties between Britain and Japan, and praised the country for its role in the adoption by many countries of the Kyoto Protocol, while emphasising that further progress was necessary to stave off global warming.

The prince has increasingly used his publicity to highlight environmental problems.

He has made efforts to cut his overall annual carbon dioxide production, including converting his 38-year old Aston Martin to run on bioethanol from surplus wine, while his Jaguars, Audi and Range Rover now take biodiesel made from used cooking oil.

The prince is in the midst of a four-day jaunt through the country with his wife, which coincides with the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Britain and Japan.

Earlier the royal couple visited Tokyo's prestigious Keio University. There they were treated to a display of traditional kabuki theatre and a demonstration of kendo, a Japanese martial art using sticks.

They are also due to visit a solar panel lab, meet ecology students and tour a sustainable forest site, before continuing on to Brunei and Indonesia.

Britain's Prince Charles visited Tokyo's prestigious Keio University with his wife Camilla Parker-Bowles on Tuesday on the second day of their visit to Japan.

It was Prince Charles' first visit to Japan in 18 years.

At the university the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall watched a display of traditional kabuki theatre and a demonstration of kendo, a Japanese martial art using sticks.

Later in the day the royal couple were scheduled to have dinner with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

The royal visit to Japan was timed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the two countries' signing a trade and friendship treaty.

During the visit the royal couple are also scheduled to visit the city of Nara to see the restoration work at the Shosoin treasure house in the Todai temple, as well as the Afan Woodland in Nagano Prefecture where British author and active environmentalist C.W. Nicol is undertaking forest regeneration work.

Prince Charles last visited Japan in 1990 with his late wife Princess Diana, when he represented Queen Elizabeth II at the crowning of Emperor Akihito.

His second wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, is on her first official visit to Japan.

They were due to meet Prime Minister Taro Aso in Tokyo on Wednesday.

The resignation of Tomiichi Murayama paves the way for Trade Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto to take up the job of Japanese prime minister.

The leader of the traditionally dominant Liberal Democratic Party is best known for his intransigent stance against American demands in auto talks.

58-year-old Ryutaro Hashimoto

is one of Japan's more high-profile, colourful politicians.

He's not only vice-premier, but also holds the important job of Minister of Foreign Trade and Industry and leads the conservative Liberal Democratic party, which has ruled Japan for most of the past fifty years..

As trade minister, Hashimoto became well-known for his tough stance against American demands in talks last summer to increase access to Japan's auto market.

With him as point man in negotiations, Japan refused to bow to U-S demands for specific goals for purchases of foreign auto parts.

However, ever since he was elected president of the Liberal Democratic Party in September, he has sought to play down his anti-U-S image, stressing his support for the U-S/Japan military alliance.

In an exclusive interview with APTV last September, Hashimoto rejected suggestions that Japan should withdraw from its reliance on the U-S.

He said the military alliance, with the millions of U-S dollars it brings into Japan, was important for both countries.

The U-S/Japan security treaty is important for Japan, of course. But I think it is playing an increasingly weighty role in terms of the United States' security position in the Asia Pacific region and the world.

Already at the time of this interview, Hashimoto was tipped as a successor to Murayama.

But he remained relaxed about the political turmoil that could be caused by a leadership change.

Hashimoto could hardly be more of a contrast to the leader he's set to replace.

Unlike Murayama, he has a go-getting, combative image - cartoons sometimes portray him as a samurai warrior.

Hashimoto has some traits typical of a bureaucrat of his age and rank.

He plays golf, sports a trademark dark-blue suit and combs his hair with ointment in a style press reports have sometimes described as "Elvis-like."

He's proficient at the Japanese martial art of kendo, or bamboo-sword fencing, and even gave U-S trade representative Mickey Kantor a lesson in the art of kendo at the trade talks in Geneva in June.

Even Hashimoto's first name contains the character for "dragon."

An extraordinary session of the Japanese parliament, which opens on 11 January, is expected to nominate Hashimoto as the new leader.

STORYLINE

Queen Elizabeth paid a rare public tribute to her eldest son Prince Charles on Wednesday, ahead of his 60th birthday.

She was visiting the headquarters of the Prince's Trust, a charity set up by Charles to help disadvantaged youngsters.

The Prince, who turns 60 on Friday, began his birthday week in France, attending events to commemorate the end of the First War War.

He was playing the role into which he was born - the heir to the throne, the formal face of the British monarchy.

But Charles - officially known as the Prince of Wales - has never been content to sit around waiting for the crown.

He spends much of his time campaigning on issues ranging from the environment to inter-faith relations.

He sends long, handwritten letters to government ministers arguing his view - intervening in issues that by convention he'll be barred from doing once he becomes King.

Critics accuse him of interfering in matters of public policy, but supporters say he's using his influence to promote causes in which he believes passionately.

Visiting Indonesia a fortnight ago, he said the global financial crisis shouldn't deflect attention from a bigger crisis - climate change.

"The credit crunch is causing a real pain to countless people across the world. The climate crunch, however, will affect every man, woman and child on this planet," he warned.

He echoed his warning when he went on to visit Tokyo.

In Britain his main project has been the Prince's Trust, a youth charity that's helped more than half a million youngsters to improve their lives.

He regularly uses his show business contacts to raise funds for the charity.

The Queen visited the Prince's Trust on Wednesday and spoke of her son's work.

"As the Prince of Wales, our son, approaches his own 60th birthday, may I say we are both enormously proud to be reminded here today of his personal contribution to this remarkable organisation," she told staff.

Although Charles wasn't there to hear her, it was a rare display of maternal pride - not something that appears to come easily to the Queen.

Paul Brown, a director of the Trust, said the Prince was much more than a figurehead.

"The Prince of Wales is absolutely passionate about the work of the Prince's Trust. He very often visits projects to meet young people who've been through the programmes," Brown said.

Prince Charles went through a difficult period towards the end of his turbulent marriage to Diana, Princess of Wales, and in the dark days that followed her death.

Camilla was widely regarded as "the other woman" in the marriage, and when he married Camilla in 2005, the move wasn't universally welcomed.

His aides were forced to stress that when Charles became King, it was intended that Camilla would be his consort - not the Queen.

But his popularity has slowly grown, alongside that of Camilla, to the point where polls have suggested that the concept of Queen Camilla may not be out of the question.

That's been helped by the warm relationship that Charles appears to have with his sons William and Harry - and the relationship that they in turn have forged with Camilla.

For now, Charles appears to be relishing his freedom to campaign, aware that when he takes over as monarch, that freedom will disappear.
