Real Madrid players trained and spoke to the media on Tuesday (24th May) as the club prepared for Saturday's (28th May) Champions League Final against Atletico Madrid at the San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Real Madrid players continued their preparations at home on Tuesday in Madrid for Saturday's Champions League Final against their city rivals, Atletico Madrid, at the San Siro in Milan.

Ronaldo limped out of training, but he later played down concerns, saying he'd be 100% fit in a couple of days.

The Portuguese has been plagued by a thigh injury that forced him to miss three games in April, and he came off at half-time in Real's final game of the La Liga season 10 days ago after scoring twice in the first half to take his season's tally to 51.

Real Madrid missed out on the La Liga title, finishing a point behind Barcelona - and watched Barca complete a league and cup double with victory in the Copa del Rey on Sunday (22nd May).

Saturday's match will be a repeat of the 2014 Champions League Final, and Real will be happy to see a similar outcome as on that occasion they came away 4-1 winners in extra-time.

It will also present the chance for Zinedine Zidane, who took charge of the club in January, to complete a Champions League winning double at the club - as both player and manager.

Zidane scored the winning goal for Real against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002 final.

There was an air of hopeful anticipation on the streets of Madrid on Saturday morning, as residents looked ahead to the naming of the host city for the 2020 Olympic games.

Jacques Rogge, the International Olympic Committee President, was due to announce the winning bid on Saturday evening in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at 1730 local time - equivalent to 2230 local time in Madrid (2030 GMT).

Madrid was up against bids from Tokyo and Istanbul.

If Madrid is selected, works on the Olympic Stadium for Madrid 2020, which is also set to be the future stadium of local football club Atletico Madrid, are set to accelerate.

In the meantime on Saturday, preparations were underway for a large public event at La Puerta de Alcala, a monument in the centre of the Spanish capital, to accompany the announcement from Buenos Aires.

Picking the city with the least risks shapes up as the challenge for the IOC.

Tokyo has been seen as a slight favourite to win the 2020 games, but its status has been put into question by concerns over the leak of radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima plant.

Madrid, once counted out because of Spain's financial troubles, has generated the most recent buzz and momentum and could be poised for an upset win.

Istanbul, dogged by the war in neighbouring Syria and possible Western military strikes against Bashar Assad's regime, looks like the outsider.

London bookmakers have been taking a rush of bets on Madrid, whose odds have been slashed from 4-1 a week ago to 5-4.

Tokyo remains the betting favourite, though its odds have shortened to 5-6. Istanbul is listed at 6-1.

Madrid resident Charo Garcia confessed that she could not anticipate the outcome of the contest.

"The people of the International Olympic Committee are very weird, so I don't know. Maybe we have had too much excitement, but I think it's our time," she said.

Raquel Meren, a teacher from Venezuela was hopeful Madrid would be victorious, saying: "I like this city and this country and I think they deserve it."

But local resident Cesar Calvo sounded a note of caution, commenting: "I hope Madrid wins, but we have to wait because this costs money."

Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo were all set to make 45-minute presentations in Buenos Aires on Saturday morning ahead of the vote later in the day by the International Olympic Committee.

The prime ministers of all three countries were set to lead the delegations.

Shinzo Abe of Japan, Mariano Rajoy of Spain and Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey all flew to Buenos Aires straight from the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia.

After losing out on the past two Olympics, Madrid believes it has honed its bid to a point where it makes it the most financially prudent choice to host the 2020 Games.

Thrift is at the core of Madrid's bid, stressing that 80 percent of its venues are already built.

The city will equip its picturesque bullring for basketball, for example, and only 1.9 billion US dollars are needed to complete Olympic construction.

The bid committee has also made a point of highlighting how hosting the Games might act as a stimulus to an economy that in 2020 should have emerged from one of its longest and deepest financial crises.

By September 7, when the full International Olympic Committee (IOC) will select the host city by secret ballot, Spain will have been in recession for most of the past four years and burdened with a staggering 26.3 per cent unemployment rate.

Madrid is competing against Tokyo and Istanbul.

Tourism is Spain's second most important industry and in 2012 it catered for 57.7 million visitors, a total likely to be exceeded in 2013, according to the tourism department's statistics agency, Frontur.

Madrid believes it makes an ideal and very safe destination for Olympic visitors as well as Spaniards whose sporting success in recent years has been a topic of great national pride.

"Everything the Olympics generate is a big thing, not only the games themselves but also during the previous few years and the following ones," Spanish Olympic Gold medallist Jose Luis Abajo said.

"The legacy the Olympic Games can leave behind in a city is something we already know after have experienced it in Barcelona, and we can experience it again in Madrid."

Madrid has 28 out of 35 venues built.

Tokyo's construction budget is 4.9 billion US dollars, while Istanbul's is 19.2 billion US dollars, making the Spanish proposal by far the most economical.

Former Madrid Mayor, from 1991 to 2003, Jose Maria Alvarez del Manzano, said he first put Madrid forward for the bid because Spain was riding high on better economic times then.

But he said that despite the gloomier current outlook, the benefit is that 80 per cent of the work has been done.

"For what's left to do, of course it's worth it," he said.

Analyst Ignacio Cantos is of the same opinion.

He believes most of the investment has already been made, many of the installations have already been built and used.

In case Madrid wins the bid on Saturday, the extra visitors will only contribute to better Madrid and Spain's image and bring with it economical profit, he highlighted.

Four cities were picked as finalists on Wednesday for the 2016 Olympics and Spain's capital Madrid was one of them.

The city's mayorship organised an event in the Cecilio Rodr�guez gardens of the Retiro Park to receive the news broadcasted from Athens.

"I am confident in our project, I am confident of our city. We have a popular support that no other bid has. What we have to do know is work and put the finishing touches to make sure the bid is well done. We need to get ourselves known outside of Spain," Ernesto Perez Lobo, Sports Coordinator 2016 Madrid Olympic bid said.

Other cities making the IOC shortlist were Chicago, US; Tokyo, Japan; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Eliminated from the race were Doha, Qatar; Prague, Czech Republic; and Baku, Azerbaijan.

The final field was selected by the International Olympic Committee executive board.

The big four - Chicago, Madrid, Spain and Tokyo - had all been virtually assured of advancing to the final stage.

Madrid citizens enjoying the warm weather in the Retiro park expressed their delight at Madrid's election.

"I would like Madrid to be the Olympic City in 2016," one woman told AP Television.

"We have it all pretty much prepared. As we had it almost ready for the 2012 bid. I think we have an opportunity," said another.

"Seeing as we didn't win for the 2012 we should win this time," said one man.

The finalists now advance to a 16-month race that will culminate on October 2, 2009, with a secret ballot by the full IOC at its session in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The evaluation report, which assessed sports venues, government support, security and other matters, put Tokyo in front, followed closely by Madrid.

In a surprise, Chicago and Doha were tied for third, with Rio fifth. Prague and Baku were sixth and seventh.

The early ranking is not crucial. When the IOC picked the finalists for the 2012 Olympics in 2004, London was ranked third behind first-place Paris and Madrid in the technical report.

London went on to win the games in 2005.

The 2016 race shapes up as a tight battle between strong candidates from the Americas, Europe and Asia.

Chicago is a contender to take the games back to the US for the first time since the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Madrid is back again after a third-place finish in the vote for the 2012 Olympics, which went to London.

Cities that made the cut will have to submit their detailed bid files to the IOC by February 12, 2009.

After that, a panel of IOC experts will visit each of the cities, tour the proposed sites and meet with bid and government leaders.

The panel will release an evaluation report to the IOC members a month before the October 2009 vote.

The 2016 cutoff was the centrepiece of a three-day IOC board meeting in Athens, the last before the committee gathers in Beijing on the eve of the August 8-24 Olympics.

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane appeared frustrated at the lack of time he has had with his players following the international break, but admitted ''that's the way it is.''

Speaking to the press on Friday, Zidane pointed out that Sunday's opponent's Levante will have had 15 days to prepare for their La Liga clash, with the Frenchman having spent just a few days with some players following their international involvement.

The team are also battling with a spate of injuries, with eight players sidelined.

Luckily for Real Eden Hazard has recovered, but the coach said he will take his time easing the Belgian back into the starting eleven.

"I know we're all eager to see Hazard but we're playing seven matches in 21 days so we need to take it easy, especially on him."

Spanish giants Real Madrid agreed to sign Belgium international Eden Hazard from Chelsea.

Chelsea confirmed the deal on twitter, without saying the fee.

The 28-year-old playmaker, who has a year left on his Chelsea contract, last week helped the London club win the UEFA Europa League final in Baku, Azerbaijan.

During a promotional event in Madrid on Thursday, Real Madrid's Casemiro talked about the club's season so far and possible new players joining 'Los Blancos' (nickname 'The Whites') next season.

Real are third in the Spanish top flight table with 60 points from 31 games and trail the leaders, and their great rivals, FC Barcelona by 13 points.

Madrid's city rivals, Atletico, are in second place, two points ahead of Real, who are next in La Liga action on Monday when they travel to meet 11th-placed Leganes.

The European champions were knocked out of this season's UEFA Champions League in the Round of 16 by Dutch club Ajax.

Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari and midfielder Luka Modric spoke on Monday ahead of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg match against Ajax on Tuesday.

Defending champions Real won the opening game in Amsterdam 2-1 after goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio.

Real Madrid trained on Saturday ahead their next La Liga match against Girona at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, with Santiago Solari saying he was not going to 'speculate about any farce' regarding UEFA's investigation into Sergio Ramos.

Ramos reportedly acknowledged his intentions of being booked with a yellow card in a post-game interview after Real Madrid defeated Ajax away by 2-1 in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.

Ramos  then retracted it in a post on Twitter .

His third yellow card of the competition triggers a ban for the second leg where defending champions Madrid are heavily favoured to advance.

Ramos would then be eligible for the quarter-finals with a clean disciplinary record.

Real Madrid have won their last five in La Liga to reduce the gap with leaders Barcelona to just six points.

Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari said he 'respects' Atletico Madrid's coach Diego Simeone on the eve of what Solari considered will be 'a beautiful game' against city rivals on Saturday at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Real Madrid prepared on Tuesday for their meeting with Leganes in the Copa del Rey's round of 16, with the first leg taking place at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Real come into the game looking to make amends for last Sunday's 2-0 loss at home to Real Sociedad in the Spanish Primera Division - a sixth league defeat in 18 games this season.

However, coach Santiago Solari will be without the injured Toni Kroos, Gareth Bale and Marco Asensio, while Raphael Varane and Thibaut Courtois are to be rested.  

The squad has been strengthened this week though, with Brahim Diaz moving to the Santiago Bernabeu from English champions Manchester City.

Real Madrid are expected to be without most of their defenders when they welcome Real Valladolid on Saturday (3rd November) in their first Spanish league match since the sacking of coach Julen Lopetegui.

Interim Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari has confirmed that he will not be able to count on veteran left-back Marcelo, central defender Raphael Varane and right-back Dani Carvajal when his side face Real Valladolid in the Spanish league at the Santiago Bernabeu.

They are all unavailable for Saturday's match because of injuries, with reserve central defender Jesus Vallejo also ruled out injured.

In attack, Solari won't have reserve forward Mariano Diaz, although Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale are set to play.

Solari, in charge of Madrid since Lopetegui was fired on Monday (29th October) following a series of poor results, is expected to stick to the second-stringers who helped the team defeat third-division club Melilla 4-0 in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday (31st October).

Alvaro Odriozola, who scored his first goal with the main squad against Melilla, will likely remain at right-back for Carvajal, while Sergio Reguilon will probably stay on the left for Marcelo.

There had been hope Carvajal could recover from a muscle injury ahead of the Valladolid match, but he did not practice with the squad on Friday (2nd November).

Madrid fans were hoping Solari will include forward Vinicius Junior in the line-up following his excellent performance in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday (31st October), which marked the youngster's first start with the main squad.

The 18-year-old Brazilian arrived amid high expectations in the off-season but had played mostly in the "B'" squad while Lopetegui was in charge.

With ten matches played domestically, Madrid are seven points behind leaders Barcelona, who visit Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

Santiago Solari attended his first press conference as Real Madrid interim coach on Tuesday (30th October) and in looking ahead to Wednesday's (31st October) Copa del Rey game at Melilla, he described his squad as "a group of champions" who "can't wait to start over and reverse the situation" - Real have won just once in seven games and were thumped 5-1 by Barcelona at the weekend, precipitating the sacking of former head coach Julen Lopetegui.

Barely 12 hours after Julen Lopetegui was removed from his position as Real Madrid coach, his replacement - on an interim basis at the moment - Santiago Solari, conducted his first training session and press conference in the Spanish capital on Tuesday.

The 42 year-old Argentine, promoted from the head coach job with Real Madrid B, has a lot of work to do and not much time to do it.

His first task is to try to lift a squad severely bruised by a 5-1 thrashing at Barcelona on Sunday (28th October), the result which proved the final straw for the club hierarchy, as far as Lopetegui was concerned.

"They're hurt, obviously. But they can't wait to start over and reverse the situation," Solari said. "They're a group of champions. They're a group of warriors that have won so many things for this club. The situation is not the easiest but I've seen how much they wish to reverse it."

Wednesday's (31st October) Copa del Rey first leg tie against third-tier Melilla could provide a much-needed confidence boost.

Solari called on his players to show their strength of character.  

"The idea is to go to Melilla tomorrow and to show them we've got balls. That's the idea we have."

"We need to play a game tomorrow, just as important as any other game for this institution, who wants to always compete for every trophy," he added. "Let's go and win it. With this group of champions who are just hurt by the situation. That's all. As simple and as hard as that."

However, the Melilla tie on the North African coast begins a run of four games in 12 days and will also involve La Liga fixtures against Real Valladolid and Celta Vigo and a trip to the Czech Republic to face Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League.   

It's been a miserable month for 'Los Merengues' (The Meringues). At the end of September, it all looked like 'business as usual' at the Bernabeu.

Lopetegui's side had 12 points from a possible 15 in La Liga and had just beaten Roma 3-0 in the Champions League.

It seemed that life without Cristiano Ronaldo, who had moved on to Juventus, wouldn't be that bad after all.

But following a 3-0 defeat at Sevilla, Real were held to a goalless draw at home by Madrid rivals Atletico and suffered back-to-back defeats against CSKA Moscow, Deportivo Alaves and Levante.

An unconvincing 2-1 home win over Plzen merely papered over the cracks, which were then exposed and widened by Barcelona at the weekend.    

The club said in a statement on Monday that they sacked Lopetegui to "... change the team's dynamic while all of the objectives for the season are still reachable."

Spanish media outlets have speculated that Solari, a former Madrid player, is in the running for the permanent position.

Any position at this club, not only coaching the first team. I've been in different places in this club... Life in the Champions League without Cristiano Ronaldo began for Real Madrid with a comfortable 3-0 win over Roma on Wednesday.

Francisco "Isco" Alarcon, Gareth Bale and Mariano Diaz took care of the scoring in Ronaldo's absence, securing the opening Group G victory for the three-time defending champions.

Madrid are playing the Champions League without Ronaldo for the first time since 2009, when the star forward arrived to lead the club to four European titles.

Ronaldo played his first Champions League game for Juventus in Group H on Wednesday and was sent off with a straight red card in the first half.

It was a disappointing opener for Roma, which is coming off a semi-final appearance last season.

In the other Group G match, Czech club Viktoria Plzen and CSKA Moscow drew 2-2 in Plzen.

Madrid dominated from the start and created most of the scoring chances throughout the game at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen, replacing Alisson Becker after the Brazilian moved to Liverpool in the off-season, put on an outstanding display to keep the Spanish hosts from scoring more goals.

But there was nothing Olsen could do on Isco's free kick just before half time.

The Swedish goalkeeper watched as the ball was expertly curled over the wall and went in the far corner.

Bale almost increased Madrid's lead with a close-range shot that struck the crossbar early in the second half but the Wales forward did make it 2-0 in the 58th with a well-placed low shot after a superb through ball from Luka Modric.

The third goal came in stoppage time with a nicely struck shot from outside the area by Diaz, who had replaced Bale in the 73rd.

Bale was the only player from Wednesday's line-up who hadn't started for Madrid in the Champions League final nearly four months ago in Ukraine.

His place was taken by Ronaldo at the time.

In addition to Ronaldo's departure, coach Zinedine Zidane quit and was replaced by former Spain manager Julen Lopetegui.

It was the first time that Lopetegui didn't opt to play with Marco Asensio up front along with Bale and Karim Benzema, although Isco was often near the attackers when Madrid held possession.

Lopetegui also kept Keylor Navas in goal despite the recent arrival of Thibaut Courtois, voted the World Cup's best goalkeeper with Belgium.

It was a special night for 19-year-old Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, who made his professional debut only two months after being signed by Roma.

Zaniolo recently helped Italy's under-19 team reach the European Championship final.

Roma have high expectations in the Champions League after making it to the last four last season, when it lost to Liverpool after having eliminated Barcelona in the quarter-finals.

Madrid next faces CSKA Moscow in Russia on Oct. 2, when Roma hosts Viktoria Plzen.
