The families of six crew members on a Malaysian passenger jet shot down over Ukraine nearly two years ago filed lawsuits against Malaysia Airlines on Thursday for negligence and breach of contract.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was hit by a surface-to-air missile on 17 July 2014, at the height of fighting in the Ukraine conflict.

Balan Nair Thamodaran, one of the lawyers working for the Thomas Philip law firm which is representing the families of the six flight MH17 crew, said he had been instructed by to take out a lawsuit against Malaysian Airlines Berhad (MAB), which Malaysian Airlines System (MAS) changed its name to after the crash.

The crew members are Nur Shazana Mohamed Salleh, Hamdazlin Sham Mohamed Arifin, Sanjid Singh, Mohd Ghafar Abu Bakar, Lee Hui Pin and Chong Yee Pheng.

Malaysia is preparing to unveil the latest overhaul of its beleaguered state-owned airline, which is reeling from twin disasters months apart that killed hundreds of passengers.

Khazanah Nasional, the state investment company that owns 69 per cent of Malaysia Airlines, said in early August that it will announce details of the overhaul by the end of this month. Malaysian news reports said the announcement will come Friday.

Analysts expect Khazanah to slash jobs, drop money-losing routes to Europe and China, and replace top management.

Aviation analyst Mohshin Aziz said on Thursday that the company is on its "last legs" and that any attempt to cut routes to Europe and north Asia would mean a corresponding cut in staff as well.

A substantial revamp has long been likely for Malaysia Airlines, which was struggling with chronic financial problems even before it was hit by the double disasters this year.

Investigators continue to scour the southern Indian Ocean for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 which severed contact with air traffic controllers and apparently veered far of course while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8 March with 239 people on board.

In July, 298 people were killed when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was blasted out of the sky as it flew over an area of eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russian separatists.

Malaysia will leave "no stones unturned" in its quest for justice in the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, the nation's defence minister said on Friday.

Hishammuddin Hussein was addressing journalists at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang after returning from Ukraine.

Flight MH17 went down on July 17 over Ukrainian territory held by pro-Russian rebels, killing all 298 passengers and crew on board.

Hishammudin Hussein, who also visited Russia and the Netherlands during the trip, said that Russia had said they will continue working with Malaysian authorities and had given a commitment that "they too want to find the truth".

He stressed Malaysia's own commitment to bringing back the remains of passengers of the plane that were still in the region

Meanwhile on Friday, the chief Dutch prosecutor overseeing the criminal investigation into the downing of the jet said the possibility that Flight 17 was shot down from the ground is the "most likely" scenario.

A separate Dutch air crash investigation concluded this week that the plane was hit from the outside by numerous high-energy objects, but stopped short of calling it a missile strike.

Russia's Ambassador to Malaysia said on Tuesday that experts had confirmed that the black boxes of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 that crashed in eastern Ukraine "were not tampered with."

Lyudmila Vorobyeva said that Russia was not playing "the blame game," as claimed by some Western countries.

On Monday pro-Moscow separatists released a train packed with bodies of the plane crash victims and handed over the black boxes from the downed Malaysia Airlines plane, four days after it got shot down.

With body parts decaying in sweltering heat and signs that evidence at the crash site was mishandled, anger in Western capitals has mounted at the rebels and their allies in Moscow.

The bodies of the 298 victims, most from the Netherlands, have become a part of the conflict in Ukraine because they could hold evidence of what brought the plane down on July 17 as it was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

Uncertainty and agonising waiting are still woven into the fabric of life for many relatives of the victims of last year's Malaysia Airlines crash in eastern Ukraine, a year after the incident.

The families of the 298 people killed when MH 17 was brought down on July 17, 2014 are still awaiting conclusive answers to their questions about the crash: Who brought down the plane? Will the perpetrators ever face justice? Why was the Boeing 777 flying over a war zone where just three days earlier an Antonov-24 military transport plane was blown out of the sky?

In Malaysia, family members of Dora Shahila Kassim are still coming to grips with the tragic event.

Dora was the Chief stewardess on board the flight.

For her mother, Hasnah Mohammad Yusof, moving forward has been very difficult.

"Its bad for me to think that way (that Dora is still alive), isn't it? But I just can't help it because there was no real farewell for her from me and I couldn't hug her for the last time," she says, fighting back tears.

Dora, a single mother, also left behind a teenage daughter, Nur Diyana Yazeera, who is 16 years old and currently studying at a boarding school.

Diyana hugs a pillow and sobs as she recalls growing up with her divorcee mother.

"I grew up without a dad and my mom was my dad as well. she was my best friend. I was close to her, now that she's not with me, its hard to cope with that," says the teen.

The Malaysian government held a remembrance ceremony in tribute to the crash victims last Saturday at Kuala Lumpur airport, which was attended by the families.

The families of the victims will also gather on Friday in the Netherlands.

Among them will be relatives of Dora, who will fly in from Kuala Lumpur.

A Dutch-led criminal investigation into the crash is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Malaysia Airlines will cut 6,000 workers as part of a 1.9 billion US dollar overhaul to revive its damaged brand after being hit by double passenger jet disasters.

The staff reduction announced on Friday represents about 30 percent of its current workforce of 20,000.

Khazanah Nasional, the state investment company that owns 69 percent of the airline, said the overhaul includes the establishment of a new company that will take over the existing Malaysia Airline business and its reduced staff.

Analysts say the substantial staff cuts suggest the airline will reduce flights to Europe and China.

The airline will be removed from the Malaysian stock exchange and taken completely under the wing of the government.

Khazanah, which previously announced that it plans to take 100 percent ownership, aims to restore Malaysia Airlines to profitability by the end of 2017 and then relist its shares on the stock exchange by the end of 2019.

In releasing its latest quarterly financial result, a loss, on Thursday, Malaysia Airlines said the worst financial impact from the disasters will come in the second half of this year.

Khazanah has begun a search for a new chief executive for the airline, which is likely to be completed by the end of this year.

Current CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya will continue to head Malaysia Airlines until its new incarnation is established in July next year.

The Malaysian Transport Minister said on Tuesday that a preliminary report into the MH17 crash confirmed that the aircraft was in an "airworthy condition."

Liow Tiong Lai was speaking at a news conference following the release of a report on the aviation disaster by the Dutch Safety Board.

Liow also said that Malaysia would pursue whoever caused the crash and would bring them to justice.

The preliminary report concluded that Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was likely struck by multiple "high-energy objects from outside the aircraft," causing it to break up over eastern Ukraine.

The report stopped short of saying the Boeing 777 was shot down by a missile, but its findings appear to point to that conclusion.

The new CEO of Malaysia Airlines said on Monday that the company is "technically bankrupt" but can remerge as Southeast Asia's leading airline.

Christoph Mueller told reporters in Kuala Lumpur that the ailing carrier could break even by 2018 after cutting staff, selling surplus aircraft and refurbishing its international fleet.

The airline is trying to sell two of its A380 super jumbo jets and has gone ahead with its previously announced plan to cut 6,000 of its 20,000 staff, according to the former chief executive of Ireland's Aer Lingus.

The remaining 14,000 employees have been offered jobs in a new company that is being set up to take over the legacy Malaysia Airlines business.

The carrier is being kept alive by an injection of funds from a Malaysian government sovereign wealth fund after double disasters in 2014 dealt a fatal blow to its already struggling business.

The Malaysian parliament passed a law allowing the airline to be restructured under Chapter 11-style bankruptcy protection.

Malaysian Airline officials led prayers on Tuesday for the victims of the twin tragedies involving flights MH370 and MH17.

The ceremony was held near the company's training centre in Petaling Jaya.

The session was attended by airline staff and officials, including the Malaysian Airlines Chief Executive, Ahmad Jauhari.

According to the airline's head of Strategic Communications Najmuddin Abdullah, staff have shown a great deal of resilience following the two disasters.

He told AP Television "we are always ready to lend any form of support towards each other."

Flight MH370 vanished on 8 March while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

Despite a multinational search effort, the whereabouts of Flight MH370 are still a mystery.

Flight MH17 was shot down on July 17 over an area of Ukraine controlled by pro-Russia separatists on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, killing all 298 people onboard.

An international investigation is ongoing, but no one has been arrested.

An Associated Press journalist has counted at least 22 bodies at the wreckage site of a passenger plane that was shot down on July 17th 2014 as it flew over the country.

Both the government and the pro-Russia separatists fighting in the region denied any responsibility for downing the plane.

The plane appeared to have broken up before impact and the burning wreckage - which included body parts and the belongings of passengers - was scattered over a wide area.

Dead bodies of passengers were visible amongst the smouldering wreckage of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 on July 17th after the plane was shot down over eastern Ukraine.

Both the Ukrainian government and the pro-Russia separatists fighting in the region denied any responsibility for downing the aircraft, which was carrying 295 people.

As plumes of black smoke rose up near a rebel-held village of Hrabove, an Associated Press journalist counted at least 22 bodies at the wreckage site 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the Russian border.

A Malaysia Airlines passenger plane carrying 295 people was shot down over eastern Ukraine on July 17th, Ukrainian officials said.

The village is under the control of pro-Russia separatists and the area has seen severe fighting between the two sides in recent days.

A Russian news report said pro-Russia rebels intend to call a three-day cease-fire to allow for an investigation into the crash and recovery efforts.

Flowers were laid outside Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands on July 20th to commemorate the victims of the downed flight MH17.

KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) flight attendants and members of the public also left messages in a book of condolences just outside the airport.

Airline employees are starting to wonder how safe it is to fly over crisis zones.

"We always assume that everything is safe but apparently it is not, so that is another reason to be wondering what happened here," said Boris Tester, a purser for KLM.

The Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said Saturday he had an "extremely intense" telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which he urged him to use his influence over separatist rebels in Ukraine to ensure they do not hinder efforts to investigate the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.

The plane crashed on July 17th, killing all 298 passengers and crew, most of them Dutch citizens.

A crane at the crash scene moved big chunks of the Boeing 777 on Monday while emergency workers retrieved more bodies in the sprawling fields of eastern Ukraine where Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was downed, killing all 298 people aboard.

By early July 21st, local emergency workers had piled at least 21 black body bags by the side of the road in Hrabove.

That brought the total found to 272 of the 298 passengers and crew killed in the tragedy, according to Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

The bodies were being sent to the refrigerated railcars in the nearby town of Torez, where the other bodies are being kept.

A train engineer told The Associated Press that the cars' refrigeration had been off overnight and it was not immediately clear why. The cooling system was back up and running early July 21st, he said.

The shambolic attempts to investigate by the pro-Russia separatists who control the verdant farmland where pieces of the plane crashed have fanned widespread international outrage, especially from the nations whose citizens were on the doomed plane.

Four days after the jetliner was shot out of the sky, international investigators still had only limited access to the crash site in eastern Ukraine.

The the UN Security Council is expected to vote today on an Australia-proposed resolution demanding international access to the crash site and a cease-fire around the area.

A refrigerated train bearing the bodies of many of the 298 people killed in the Malaysia Airlines plane disaster pulled away on July 21st from a rebel-held town in eastern Ukraine.

The train left from Torez, 15 kilometres (9 miles) from the crash site.

An Associated Press reporter overheard armed separatists saying it was heading for the rebel-held town of Ilovaysk.

There was no official confirmation of that destination from the rebels.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said that the remains of 282 of the crash victims are being moved by train to Kharkiv, where they will be handed over to Dutch authorities.

From there, he said, they will be flown to Amsterdam on a Dutch C130 Hercules military plane and handed over to Dutch authorities.

Razak said the leader of the pro-Russian rebels has agreed to hand over both black boxes from Flight 17 to Malaysian investigators who are in Ukraine.

Scuffles broke out in the Ukrainian parliament on July 22nd after a lawmaker blamed the Ukrainian authorities for failing to adopt a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine and accused them of running a war against the Ukrainian people.

The accusations were made by lawmaker Mykola Levchenko from the Party of Regions, which was close to Ukraine's former president Viktor Yanukovych.

Lawmaker Ihor Miroshychenko from the Svoboda Party started to push Levchenko, before other lawmakers joined in the fight.

The incident took place as parliament discussed Malaysian airlines flight MH17, which crashed in eastern Ukraine the previous week.

The parliamentary session started with a minute of silence to remember the victims.

Oleksandr Turchynov, the Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament, accused Russia of committing "acts of military aggression against Ukraine" by providing weapons to separatist fighters in eastern Ukraine and sending troops to the border.

"Russia is continuing an escalation of armed opposition in these (Donetsk and Luhansk) regions," said Andriy Parubiy, the Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council.

"Right now, around 41-thousand Russian Federation armed forces servicemen are located on the eastern and northern Ukrainian borders and Crimea's borders," he added.

Fighting in eastern Ukraine began in mid-April after Russia annexed Ukraine's southern Crimean Peninsula a month earlier.

Monitors from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on July 23rd visited a different site peppered with wreckage of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.

The pro-Russian separatists who are in control of the main crash area are showing little willingness to allow the full-scale investigation that's being demanded by world leaders.

The debris is still unguarded across a wide stretch of farmland.

International observers say there are signs that the debris is being mishandled or even tampered with.

So far, though, there still has not been a full-scale investigation of the site.

Ukrainian aviation officials were allowed to visit briefly on July 18th but got little access.

Forensic officials from the Netherlands were allowed a visit on July 21st.

Two military cargo planes, one Dutch and the other Australian, also flew 38 more coffins carrying victims to the Netherlands for identification and investigation.

The planes took off on July 26th from Kharkiv, a government-controlled city where the bodies have been brought from the wreckage site in territory held by pro-Russian separatists fighting the Ukrainian government.

They landed later in the afternoon in Eindhoven, where the coffins were transferred to a fleet of hearses in a solemn ceremony.

Officials said the flights took the last of the 227 coffins containing victims that had been brought to Kharkiv by refrigerated train.

Officials say the exact number of people held in the coffins is still to be determined by forensic experts in the Netherlands.

International observers have said there are still remains at the crash site. Access has been limited due to rebel interference and security concerns.

Wreckage of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, downed over eastern Ukraine last year, went on display at a Dutch air base on Tuesday, as the Chairman of the Dutch Safety Board said the results of a civil investigation should be released in October.

Speaking in Rijen, where the wreckage was on display, Tjibbe Joustra said that six countries are involved in the compilation of the report.

Tuesday was the first chance to see the twisted and partly charred wreckage that for months lay in fields in conflict-torn eastern Ukraine where it plunged to the ground on 17 July 2014, most likely after being hit by a missile. All 298 passengers and crew on board died.

The wreckage was brought back to the Netherlands where civil and criminal investigations are underway to establish the cause of the disaster and initiate the prosecution of those responsible.

Family members who viewed the wreckage on Tuesday at the Gilze-Rijen military air base in the southern Netherlands didn't speak to the media.

More family members were due to visit later in the week. In total some 500 people were expected to visit.

Wreckage spread across three hangars at the base included wings, wheels, parts of the fuselage and overhead luggage bins.

Some of it was scorched black by fire, other pieces of the plane's thin metal body were scratched, twisted and and torn.

Not visible to media were parts of the plane with damage that investigators said in a preliminary report last year "appears to indicate that the aircraft was penetrated by a large number of high-energy objects from outside the aircraft."

The parents of a woman who died on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 travelled from Perth, Australia to honour their daughter at the crash site in eastern Ukraine.

George "Jerzy" Dyczynski and Angela Rudhart-Dyczynski, parents of 25-year-old Fatima, crossed territory held by pro-Russian rebels to reach the wreckage-strewn farm fields outside the village of Hrabove.

Around a dozen people in Kuala Lumpur held a small candlelight vigil on Friday for the passengers on board a Malaysian jetliner that was shot down over eastern Ukraine.

Nearly three years after twin disasters took it to the brink of financial collapse, Malaysia Airlines' new CEO says an overhaul aimed at turning the ailing carrier around is going better than expected.

Bellew said the airline is on track to meet key performance goals, including turning an annual profit by 2018 and re-listing on the stock exchange the following year.

The company's jets are carrying more passengers, including on its London route, he said.

London is the carrier's last remaining European route and one where it uses superjumbo Airbus A380 jets that must carry many passengers to be profitable.

Just months after Flight 370 disappeared, a second Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 carrying 298 people was shot down over Ukraine.

Those tragedies deepened the carrier's already daunting troubles.

The search for the airline's flight 370 that went missing in March 2014 with 239 people on board was suspended Tuesday.

An unsustainable network of routes, high operating costs and archaic online systems were symptoms of chronic mismanagement that had saddled the airline with at least 1.7 billion US dollars in losses since 2011.

Updates on the finances of the airline are scant: it was de-listed from the stock exchange in 2014 and radically restructured with 6 billion ringgit (1.5 billion US dollars) in government support.

But lower jet fuel prices have since helped cut costs, and revenue has improved thanks to strong traffic growth in the region.

The remains of the victims of the Malaysia Airlines crash arrived in territory held by the Ukrainian government on Tuesday on their way to the Netherlands.

After a 17-hour journey from the town of Torez in rebel territory, the train carrying the bodies pulled into a station in Kharkiv, a government-controlled city where Ukrainian authorities have set up their crash investigation center.

This, after delays and haphazard treatment of the bodies that put pressure on European foreign ministers meeting in Brussels to impose tougher economic sanctions on Russia.

Government spokesman Oleksander Kharchenko said Ukraine "will do our best" to send the bodies to the Netherlands on Tuesday.

The remains of two more Malaysian victims of the ill-fated Flight MH17 that crashed in eastern Ukraine in July, were brought back for burial to Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

The bodies of Lee Jian Han and Tambi Jiee arrived on board a special Malaysia Airlines aircraft at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
