Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman on Friday updated reporters on the latest on repatriating the bodies of those killed in the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 incident.

"All four refrigerators with bodies of innocent victims have been unloaded. And information from 6pm (3pm GMT) is that experts already processed 378 packages with remains of innocent victims," he said.

"The team has prepared 227 special coffins to transport bodies to the Netherlands for identification. 180 coffins have been already sent, others will be sent tomorrow morning," he added.

Meanwhile in Kuala Lumpur, hundreds of people, including flight attendants and families of the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines jet, joined a multi-faith prayer service.

Two more planes departed Kharkiv airport on Friday with a further 74 coffins containing bodies and remains from the crash.

All 298 people aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 - most of them Dutch citizens - were killed when the plane went down on 17 July.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott spoke on Thursday at a multi-faith service honouring the victims of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

Thirty-eight Australian citizens and residents were among the 298 people killed in the crash, and Australian flags were flown at half-mast across the country to mark the occasion.

"There will be a time to judge the guilty, but today we honour the dead and we grieve with the living," Abbott said.

He said that hundreds of Australian police and military personnel had been working around the clock to retrieve human remains and belongings from the war zone where the downed passenger plane crashed on July 17.

The multi-faith commemorations were centred on St. Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne, capital of Victoria state where 16 of the victims lived.

Hours earlier, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte halted the search for remains of victims in Ukraine, saying it was too dangerous to continue with the international recovery mission.

Emergency workers, police officers and even off-duty coal miners _ dressed in overalls and covered in soot _ spread out across sunflower fields and tiny Ukrainian villages Friday, searching through the wreckage of the Malaysian plane shot down as it flew miles above the country's battlefield.

The downing killed 298 people from nearly a dozen nations. By midday, 181 bodies had been located, according to emergency workers at the sprawling crash site.

Separatist rebels who control the eastern area where Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was brought down Thursday said they had recovered most of its black boxes and were considering what to do with them. Their statement had profound implications for the integrity of the plane crash investigation.

U.S. intelligence authorities said a surface-to-air missile downed the plane, but could not say who fired it.

Ukraine has called for an international probe to determine who attacked the plane and insisted it was not its military.

An angry Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Friday demanded an independent inquiry into the downing and called Russia's response to it "deeply, deeply unsatisfactory."

"The initial response of the Russian ambassador was to blame Ukraine for this and I have to say that is deeply, deeply unsatisfactory," he said. "It's very important that we don't allow Russia to prevent an absolutely comprehensive investigation so that we can find out exactly what happened here."

"This is not an accident, it's a crime," he added.

The crash site was spread out over fields between two villages in eastern Ukraine _ Rozsypne and Hrabove _ and access to it remained difficult and dangerous. The road from Donetsk, the largest city in the region, to the crash site was marked by five rebel checkpoints Friday, with document checks at each.

Fighting apparently still continued nearby. In the distance, the thud of Grad missile launchers being fired could be heard Friday morning.

In the sunflower fields around Rozsypne, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Russian border, lines of men disappeared into the thick and tall growth Friday. One fainted after finding a body. Another body was covered in a coat.

In Hrabove, several miles away, huge numbers of simple sticks, some made from tree branches, were affixed with red or white rags to mark spots where body parts were found.

Ukraine Foreign Ministry representative Andriy Sybiga said 181 bodies had been found, citing local emergency workers at the site. He said the bodies will be taken to Kharkiv, a government-controlled city 270 kilometers (170 miles) to the north, for identification.

Among the debris were watches and smashed mobile phones, charred boarding passes and passports. An "I Love Amsterdam" T-shirt and a guidebook to Bali hinted at holiday plans.

Large chunks of the Boeing 777 that bore the airline's red, white and blue markings lay strewn over one field. The cockpit and one turbine lay a kilometer (a half-mile) apart, and residents said the tail landed another 10 kilometers (six miles) away.

One rebel militiaman in Rozsypne told The Associated Press that the plane's fuselage showed signs of being struck by a projectile.

The area has seen heavy fighting between government troops and pro-Russia separatists, and rebels had bragged about shooting down two Ukrainian military jets in the region just a day earlier.

Ukraine accused the rebels of shooting down the Malaysia Airlines plane. The rebels denied it and accused government forces of the same; President Petro Poroshenko denied it as well.

Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed Ukraine for the downing, saying it was responsible for the unrest in its Russian-speaking eastern regions _ but did not accuse Ukraine of shooting the plane down and not address the key question of whether Russia gave the rebels such a powerful missile. Ukraine and the West have accused Russia of supporting the rebels, a charge that Moscow denies.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk described the downing Friday as an "international crime" whose perpetrators would have to be punished in an international tribunal.

"Yesterday's terrible tragedy will change our lives. The Russians have done it now," he was cited as saying by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

An assistant to the insurgency's military commander, Igor Girkin, said Friday on condition of anonymity that eight out of the plane's 12 recording devices had been located at the crash site. He did not elaborate. Since airplanes normally have both a flight data recorder and a cockpit voice recorder, it was not exactly clear what devices he was referring to.

He said Girkin was still considering whether to give international crash investigators access to the sprawling crash site. Any investigators would need specific permission from the rebel leadership before they could safely film or take photos at the crash site, he said.

Kenneth Quinn of the Flight Safety Foundation said an international coalition of countries should lead the investigation. The Unites States has offered to help.

Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lay repeatedly insisted Friday that the airline's path was an internationally approved route and denied accusations that Malaysia Airlines was trying to save fuel and money by taking a more direct flight path across Ukraine.

"I want to stress that this route is an approved path that is used by many airlines including 15 Asia-Pacific airlines. We have not been informed that the path cannot be used," he said

Malaysia's prime minister said there was no distress call before the plane went down.

Aviation authorities in several countries, including the FAA in the United States, had issued previous warnings not to fly over parts of Ukraine after Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula in March. Within hours of the crash Thursday, several airlines announced they were avoiding parts of Ukrainian airspace.

On Friday, Ukraine's state aviation service closed the airspace over two regions currently gripped by fighting _ Donetsk and Luhansk _ and Russian aviation regulators said Russian airlines have suspended all transit flights over Ukraine.

At a news conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Airlines updated its nationality count of passengers, saying the plane carried 173 Dutch, 24 Malaysian, 27 Australian, 12 Indonesian, 9 British, 4 German, 4 Belgian, 3 Filipino and one person each from Canada and New Zealand.

Passengers on the plane included a large contingent of world-renowned AIDS researchers and activists headed to an international AIDS conference in Melbourne, Australia. News of their deaths sparked an outpouring of grief across the global scientific community.

In Kuala Lumpur, several relatives of victims were meeting with counselors at the international airport. A distraught Akmar Mohamad Noor, 67, said her older sister was coming to visit the family for the first time in five years.

"She called me just before she boarded the plane and said, `See you soon,"' Akmar said.

In the Netherlands, flags were flying at half-staff across the country as residents mourned the victims.

Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at about 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) when it was hit by a missile from a Buk launcher, which can fire up to an altitude of 22,000 meters (72,000 feet). He said only that his information was based on "intelligence."

Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai on Sunday met a group of experts from his country who travelled to Kiev to participate in the joint international investigation into the cause of the Malaysia Airlines plane crash.

Speaking after the meeting in the Ukraine capital, the minister said it was "imperative" to resolve the issue of access to the crash site and the remains of the victims, and to ensure the safety of the investigative team.

Rebels in eastern Ukraine on Sunday took control of the bodies recovered from downed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 and refused to give international investigators full access to the crash site.

They said that recovered bodies would remain in four refrigerated train cars in the rebel-held town of Torez, 15 kilometres (nine miles) from the crash site, until the arrival of an international aviation delegation.

An international court on Monday ordered Russia to pay over 50 billion US dollars in compensation to the former majority shareholder of now-defunct oil producer Yukos over the expropriation of the company more than 10 years ago.

In one of the largest arbitration cases ever, a subsidiary for GML Limited, once the biggest shareholder in the Yukos Oil Company, had sought 103.5 billion US dollars from Russia.

The Russian government under President Vladimir Putin in 2003 levelled massive tax claims against Yukos, then Russia's largest oil company owned by the country's richest man Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

Russia imprisoned Khodorkovsky and seized the company's assets when they couldn't pay.

The move was widely seen as retaliation for Khodorkovsky's support for opposition political parties.

Russia said it was merely seeking payment for back taxes and penalties that Yukos evaded in the period 2000-2003.

Yukos shareholders received no compensation for that.

Monday's ruling adds to tensions between Russia and the international community at a time when relations are at their lowest ebb since the end of the Cold War.

Following the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine, the US and European Union are debating further economic sanctions against Moscow because of its support for rebels suspected of launching the attack.

The timing of the arbitral tribunal's decision has fuelled suspicion among both analysts and ordinary Russian citizens that the ruling was political.

In Moscow on Monday, one man described the decision as "sanctions against Russia (that have) nothing to do with economics".

"It is proved by the fact that this is happening at the same time as the pressure on Russia is growing," he added.

Meanwhile, economics analyst Valery Mironov, of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, claimed there were no legal grounds for the Yukos shareholders' claims because Russia was not a signatory to the Energy Charter Treaty.

Russia signed but did not ratify the Energy Charter Treaty, which is used in dispute resolution procedures such as arbitration - including the Yukos case.

"Today we saw a one-sided approach, one that is not in favour of Russia," Mironov added.

Reflecting on the timing of the decision, Mironov said that "from a financial point of view they unexpectedly double the financial weight that has been put on Russia at the time of this geopolitical conflict."

Earlier on Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Russia would appeal against the ruling.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, commenting earlier on Monday, said Russia will be appealing against the ruling.

"Authorities who are representing Russia in this trial will use all possible legal means to defend their position," Lavrov said.

The ruling adds to tensions between Russia and the international community at a time when relations are at their lowest ebb since the end of the Cold War.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected charges against Russian citizens for their alleged roles in the downing of a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet over Ukraine five years ago, saying they lack proof.

The international team investigating the 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 announced murder charges Wednesday against three Russians and one Ukrainian for their alleged roles in the attack that killed all 298 people on board.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Putin claimed "there is no proof whatsoever" behind the charges and criticised the investigators, saying they ignored evidence provided by Russia.

He blamed Ukraine for setting the stage for the tragedy, saying they failed to close their airspace to commercial flights despite the separatist fighting in the east.

Putin says Russia remains open for dialogue on the case.

Putin said that Russian private military contractors have been active in Syria, adding that they don't represent the Russian state.

Asked why the government doesn't offer veterans' benefits to private contractors who fought in Syria, Putin said Thursday that they have been there in their private capacity and engaged in "oil exploration."

He added that it was "not the Russian government and not the Russian State" so he wouldn't comment on it.

The statement marked Putin's first acknowledgement that Russian private military contractors were active in Syria.

Russian media have reported that the so-called Wagner Company has sent thousands of mercenaries to Syria, augmenting the Russian military.

The company has been linked to businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, indicted by the U.S. for meddling in the 2016 elections.

Putin said that Russia doesn't want to regain its Soviet-era superpower clout.

Asked if Russia has regained the Soviet Union's superpower status, Putin said it's not needed.

Speaking after Thursday's call-in show, the Russian leader told reporters that "we don't want to be like the Soviet Union that enforced its way of life and political system on its neighbours, including countries of Eastern Europe."

He noted that the Soviet policy was "counterproductive, too costly and lacking historic perspective" and "it's impossible to force other people to live according to your rules."

Putin charged that the U.S. has failed to learn from Soviet mistakes in a bid for global domination.

The Federal Aviation Administration is telling U.S. airlines they are prohibited from flying to the Tel Aviv airport in Israel after a Hamas rocket exploded nearby.

The FAA said in a statement that the ban on flights is for 24 hours beginning at 12:15 p.m. EST (16125 GMT) on Tuesday.

The statement said the rocket strike landed about one mile (1.6 kilometers) from Ben Gurion International Airport Tuesday morning.

The notice only applies to U.S. airlines since the FAA has no authority over carriers from other nations.

The agency said it will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation, and that updated instructions will be provided to U.S. airlines "as soon as conditions permit, but no later than 24 hours" from the time the directive went into force.

President Vladimir Putin called for a "strengthening" of the Russian Black Sea fleet on Sunday, during a speech at a Navy Day memorial service at Severomorsk Naval Base.

Putin announced that Russia had bought eleven new battleship hulls, with the aim of "strengthening of the combat capabilities of the Black Sea Fleet. And Russia will revamp battleships' manpower and build a modern military infrastructure with social facilities."

Tensions have run high in the Ukraine region since March when Russia seized Crimea, home to the Black Sea Fleet, leading the US and EU to become highly critical of Putin's behaviour.

The Ukrainian Security Service Counterintelligence Chief on Saturday claimed that the Buk M1 missile launcher that was allegedly used to shoot down a Malaysia Airlines plane over eastern Ukraine was operated by Russian citizens.

"Rebels can not operate the highly sophisticated and high technique missile launcher Buk M1. To operate Buk M1 you need to have military education and to be well trained," Vitaly Nayda said at a briefing in the Ukrainian Capital, Kiev.

"We know for sure that the team was Russian, they were Russian citizens operating Buk M1 and they came from the territory of the Russian federation together with the missile launcher."

Nayda went on to claim that the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) has evidence to show that three Buk 1 missile systems had been removed from Ukraine after the shooting down of the plane - supposedly to remove evidence from pro-Russia separatist held areas.

Russia is considering banning imports of cut flowers from The Netherlands - a move that would aggravate tensions between the two countries already at odds over the downing of flight MH17.

National veterinary agency Rosselkhoznadzor said on Monday it had urged the European Union's organisation for plant protection to review certification for Dutch flower exports to Russia.

A Rosselkhoznadzor official said the agency had found bugs in flowers, adding that half of the infected products were originally from The Netherlands.

STORYLINE

The Russian maker of the Buk air defence missile system said on Tuesday that Malaysian Airlines flight 17 was downed by an older version of the missile which isn't in service with the Russian military but is in Ukrainian arsenals.

Controversy continues over who shot down the plane last summer over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people aboard.

Ukraine and the West suspect it was destroyed by a Russian surface-to-air missile fired by Russian soldiers or Russia-backed separatist rebels fighting in the area. Russia denies that.

Mikhail Malyshevsky, an adviser to the director general of the missile maker - the state-controlled Almaz-Antei consortium - said at a news conference on Tuesday that holes in the plane's parts were consistent with a specific type of Buk missile and its warhead.

Rebels have staunchly denied even possessing a functioning Buk missile launcher at the time that MH17 was brought down, although one was seen in separatist-controlled Snizhne by AP reporters a few hours before the plane crashed.

Ukraine's parliament on Thursday voted not to accept the resignation of Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

Yatsenyuk said he was resigning last week after two parties supporting him left the coalition, and parliament balked at passing laws he said were essential to fund the war against pro-Russian separatists.

The vote keeps Ukraine on course for fulfilling its obligations under its bailout loans with the International Monetary Fund and ensures added funding for the military.

Yatsenyuk thanked the parliament and said his government "has not declared default and never will".

Olexander Turchynov, Parliamentary chairman, said another law was passed ratifying and agreement between Kiev and Canberra to send Australian experts to investigate the circumstances of the Malaysian Airlines passenger plane crash in eastern Ukraine.

The plane was shot down on July 17, killing all 298 passengers and crew, including 43 Malaysians and 195 Dutch.

Some bodies have yet to be recovered at the crash site, which has been inaccessible to investigators for days due to fighting between the Ukrainian army and pro-Russia separatists.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk confirmed on Monday that his government has officially asked the Netherlands to lead the investigation into the Malaysian Airlines flight which was shot out of the sky over eastern Ukraine killing all 298 on board.

Yatsenyuk reiterated on Monday that those responsible for downing Flight MH17 would be held accountable for their actions.

At a tense news conference in the Ukraine capital Kiev, Yatsenyuk accused Russia of providing the missile system that brought the plane down, and helping the rebels to operate the system.

Ukrainian officials say the plane was shot down by a mobile missile battery from a rebel-controlled area in eastern Ukraine.

They said the BUK rocket launcher was supplied from Russia and operated by Russian personnel.

Yatsenyuk called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to realise that "enough is enough", as it had gone beyond a conflict between their two countries to an "international and global conflict."

Pressure has been growing on Putin, who the US and others say has backed and armed the rebels, to rein in the insurgents in Ukraine and allow a full-scale investigation.

Russia has denied backing the separatists.

Yatsenyuk also confirmed that 272 bodies have now been recovered, 251 of which have been loaded into refrigerated trains in Torez, a town near the crash site.

A team of international monitors, including three from the Dutch National Forensic Investigations Team, were to visit both Torez and the crash site later Monday.
