Malaysia will leave "no stones unturned" in its quest for justice in the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, the nation's defence minister said on Friday.

Hishammuddin Hussein was addressing journalists at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang after returning from Ukraine.

Flight MH17 went down on July 17 over Ukrainian territory held by pro-Russian rebels, killing all 298 passengers and crew on board.

Hishammudin Hussein, who also visited Russia and the Netherlands during the trip, said that Russia had said they will continue working with Malaysian authorities and had given a commitment that "they too want to find the truth".

He stressed Malaysia's own commitment to bringing back the remains of passengers of the plane that were still in the region

Meanwhile on Friday, the chief Dutch prosecutor overseeing the criminal investigation into the downing of the jet said the possibility that Flight 17 was shot down from the ground is the "most likely" scenario.

A separate Dutch air crash investigation concluded this week that the plane was hit from the outside by numerous high-energy objects, but stopped short of calling it a missile strike.

Russia's Ambassador to Malaysia said on Tuesday that experts had confirmed that the black boxes of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 that crashed in eastern Ukraine "were not tampered with."

Lyudmila Vorobyeva said that Russia was not playing "the blame game," as claimed by some Western countries.

On Monday pro-Moscow separatists released a train packed with bodies of the plane crash victims and handed over the black boxes from the downed Malaysia Airlines plane, four days after it got shot down.

With body parts decaying in sweltering heat and signs that evidence at the crash site was mishandled, anger in Western capitals has mounted at the rebels and their allies in Moscow.

The bodies of the 298 victims, most from the Netherlands, have become a part of the conflict in Ukraine because they could hold evidence of what brought the plane down on July 17 as it was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

The Malaysian Australian Business council and the Australian High Commission organised a reception on Sunday for visiting Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Abbot said Australian businesses must venture out in order to gain opportunities abroad, including in Malaysia.

He also said the way Australia and Malaysia "have worked so well together" in addressing the twin tragedies of flights MH370 and MH17 has strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

The ongoing search efforts for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 were high on the agenda during Abbott's visit.

Malaysia aims to send a search team to the crash site in Ukraine of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 before winter sets in to gather physical evidence to prove that it was shot down, Prime Minister Najib Razak has said.

The plane plunged from the sky on July 17, killing all on board, while flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur over an area of eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russia separatists.

Searches of the crash site were halted on August 6 due to concerns that fighting in the immediate area was a threat.

Malaysia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anifah Aman, left for Ukraine early on Monday, to discuss the issues surrounding the downed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 with senior Ukrainian officials.

Aman, who was leading a government delegation left at 00:30 a.m. local time (1630 GMT on Sunday).

He is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to discuss access to the crash site and the recovery of the bodies of the victims.

International monitors say armed rebels have limited their access to the crash site and Ukrainian officials said armed rebels took 192 bodies away from their workers by force Sunday.

Aman will head to Istanbul and transit to Kiev.

He refused to answer questions from the media but said he would update reporters after his discussions.

Flight MH17 was shot down in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, leaving 298 dead.

The Boeing 777 was flying from Amsterdam to the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur when it was shot down, killing all 298 passengers and crew.

Nearly four years after the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over Ukraine, family members of the victims onboard the passenger jet continue to seek justice.

On Friday, the Netherlands and Australia announced they were holding Moscow legally responsible for its role in the missile attack.

The announcement came a day after international prosecutors said they had unequivocal evidence of Russian involvement in the downing of a Malaysian passenger jet.

Don Shahidan Kassim, a relative of Dora Shahila Kassim, the chief stewardess onboard MH17, said he hopes the Malaysian and Australian governments will take action against Russia.

On Thursday, a Dutch-led international team of investigators said they had strong evidence that the Buk missile system that brought down the Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur flight came from a Russia-based military unit, the 53rd anti-aircraft missile brigade based in the Russian city of Kursk.

It was the most explicit link yet published by the investigators between Moscow and the downing of the flight known as MH17.

The Malaysian government gave an update on Thursday on the search for missing Malaysian Airlines flight 370 and efforts to find those responsible for the shooting down of flight MH17 over Ukraine in July.

Defence Minister, Hishammuddin Hussein, said Malaysia would continue to "work closely with Australia and the Netherlands" in order to re-enter the crash site for flight MH17 before the onset of winter.

The plane went down on July 17 over Ukrainian territory held by pro-Russian rebels, killing all 298 passengers and crew on board.

Regarding flight 370, Hussein announced he is to hold further talks with China regarding the ongoing search for the aircraft in the southern Indian Ocean.

The flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing disappeared in March with 239 people on board.

The Defence Minister also commented on reports of alleged Islamic State (IS) activity in Malaysia.

Hussein was asked whether he had heard of any reports linking the BIFF (Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters) and the militant group Abu Sayyaf with Islamic State militants.

Both the BIFF and Abu Sayyaf are based in the southern Philippines near the coast of Sabah in eastern Malaysia.

Hussein told reporters he was not aware of these allegations, but any such reports would be studied very carefully.

The Malaysian Parliament held a moment of silence on Wednesday for the people killed aboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

All 298 people on board the plane were killed when it was shot down on Thursday in eastern Ukraine.

At the beginning of the session, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak addressed lawmakers and condemned "the inhumane, uncivilised, violent and irresponsible action" that led to the tragedy.

The Malaysian Prime Minister said on Thursday that it would be impossible to bring home the bodies of the Malaysian victims of the crashed Malaysia Airlines plane before the end of the month of Ramadan.

After signing a book of condolence at the residence, Razak stated that the body identification process and the forensic works could take weeks, or even months.

Dutch foreign minister Stef Blok on Thursday met Malaysian families who lost loved ones when Malaysian Airlines MH17 was shot down over Ukraine four years ago.

Blok's low-key meeting in Kuala Lumpur was to brief the Malaysians on action being taken by the Netherlands and other countries over the case.

The Netherlands has said it holds Russia responsible for providing the missile that brought down the jet, causing the deaths of all 298 people aboard.

STORYLINE:

Malaysian Minister of Transport Liow Tiong Lai said on Thursday that Malaysia will work together with Australia to determine whether debris that washed up in Mozambique is that of the missing plane MH370.

The debris was tentatively identified as a part from the same type of aircraft as the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 on Wednesday.

Liow said the partnership with Australia will allow Malaysia to immediately discuss the details regarding the debris' recovery.

He added that the debris will definitely "be under Malaysia custody."

MH370 disappeared on March 8, 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

Radar data show the plane turned sharply around as it approached Vietnamese airspace, and then flew back across the Malay Peninsula until contact was lost off the coast of Thailand.

After nearly three years, the hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 ended in futility and frustration on Tuesday, as crews completed their deep-sea search of a desolate stretch of the Indian Ocean without finding a trace of the plane.

In Kuala Lumpur, Liow Tiong Lai the Malaysian Transport Minister confirmed search vessels were to leave the search area.

Last year, Australia, Malaysia and China - which have each helped fund the search - agreed that the hunt would be suspended once the search zone was exhausted unless new evidence emerges that pinpoints the plane's specific location.

Since no technology currently exists that can tell investigators exactly where the plane is, that effectively means the most expensive, complex search in aviation history is over.

The aircraft vanished during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014 with 239 people on board.

The families of those onboard missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 have launched efforts to raise at least 50 (m) million US dollars to fund a private search as they mark the third anniversary of the plane's disappearance.

The nearly three-year search in the southern Indian Ocean was suspended on 17 January after investigators failed to trace the plane.

MH370 disappeared on 8 March 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

Malaysia's Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said on Saturday that the victims of the incident will always be remembered.

Jacquita Gomes, whose husband was a flight attendant, said that the plane search must go on.

A final report on the plane's disappearance will be released this year.

Malaysia's transport minister said on Sunday that the government is open to new proposals from U.S. technology firm Ocean Infinity or any other companies to resume the hunt for Flight 370, as families of passengers marked the fifth anniversary of the jet's mysterious disappearance.

The plane vanished with 239 people on board on March 8 2014 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Confirmed debris that washed ashore in the western Indian Ocean helped to narrow Ocean Infinity's search area, but it failed to uncover any evidence.

Ocean Infinity mounted a  'no cure, no fee' search for the plane in the southern Indian Ocean in January 2018 that ended in May without any clue as to where it could have crashed.

But the company's CEO, Oliver Plunkett, said in a video shown at the public remembrance event at a mall near Kuala Lumpur that the company hopes to resume the hunt with better technology obtained in the past year.

The Ocean Infinity mission came a year after an official search by Malaysia, Australia and China ended in futility.

Plunkett said his company has better technology now after successfully locating an Argentinian submarine in November, a year after it went missing.

He said the firm is still reviewing all possible data on Flight 370 and thinking about how it can revive its failed mission.

"We haven't given up hope. We hope we can continue the search in due course," Plunkett said.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said it's been frustrating that the two searches failed to produce any clues and that he "welcomes credible leads and also concrete proposals to resume the search."

He brushed off suggestions of offering rewards to find the plane, but said the government is willing to discuss proposals from any companies prepared to resume the search.

"There must be a proposal from a specific company ... we cannot just be out there without credible leads. That's the most practical thing to do," Loke said.

A Malaysian-led independent investigation report released last July showed lapses in the government's response and raised the possibility of "intervention by a third party."

Investigators, however, said the cause of the disappearance cannot be determined until the wreckage and the plane's black boxes are found.

The report reiterated Malaysia's assertion that the plane was deliberately diverted and flown for over seven hours after severing communications.

But it said there was no evidence of abnormal behavior or stress in the two pilots that could have lead them to hijack the plane.

All the other passengers were also cleared by police and had no pilot training.

Voice 370, a support group for next-of-kin, expressed hope that the new government that won a general election in May last year will do more to encourage search missions and seek new clues.

The group's spokeswoman, Grace Nathan, urged the government to set aside up to 70 million US dollars — the amount it agreed to pay Ocean Infinity had it found the plane — to encourage exploration companies to take on "no cure, no fee" missions so Flight 370's passengers will not have died in vain.

Prime Minister Najib Razak, who addressed a news conference in Kuala Lumpur after speaking with leaders of Ukraine, the Netherlands, and US President Barack Obama, said "no stone will be left unturned" in finding out what happened to to the plane.

He told reporters that Ukrainian authorities believe the Boeing 777-200, which was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew, was shot down on Thursday, but that Malaysia was so far unable to verify the cause of the tragedy.

Malaysians expressed their anger and frustration on Sunday over a perceived lack of cooperation by Russia in the investigation on the Malaysian Airlines flight 17's crash in a rebel-controlled area in eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian government and separatist rebels accuse each other of firing a surface-to-air missile at the Boeing 777 with almost 300 people aboard.

Both deny shooting down the plane.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which is conducting investigations into the cause of the incident, said separatists denied full access to the plane crash site.

Amid wide calls for an international investigation, doubts arose about whether the evidence was being compromised before inspectors ever reach the scene.

"Of course I am angry. I think there must be something, there must be some action that they have to do to make the government and also for the investigators to access and do it, " said a 27-year-old Nur Zehan Abu Bakar, who works in the education sector.

Others Malaysians tried to remain calm and were waiting for the official investigation to be completed. "I encourage everyone to stay calm to look at what actually happened," said 36-year-old dancer JS Wong.

James Chin, professor at the Monash University in Malaysia, said that "without the co-operation of Russia, it is almost impossible for the Malaysian team or for any international investigation to take place."

He said he believes "the Malaysia government takes the position that we cannot antagonise the Russians now because the Russian holds the key to the investigations."

Malaysia is Russia's main trading partner in Southeast Asia.

The two countries have had healthy relations in the past with trade between both valued at 1,903 (b) billion US dollars in 2007, according to the Russian embassy website.

Russia is one of Malaysia's main military aircraft seller, with the Malaysian air force having 18 Sukhoi fighter jets in its fleet.
