To mark one hundred days to the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, there were celebrations in the West Bank town of Ramallah as Palestinian athletes prepare to attend the London Games.

The event, co-hosted by the British Consulate General in Jerusalem and the Palestine Olympic Committee, kicked off near the grave of late Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, a mausoleum in the government compound, also known as the Muqata.

There were plenty of flags and hundreds of Palestinian youths competing in two races, but none of the four prospective Olympians - the two runners and two swimmers are all training abroad ahead of the summer Games.

One of the four team members is from Gaza.

"We are helping them the best we can in Gaza with some equipment and some training and we hope that they will succeed. The very fact that they are taking part in these games of friendship means that Palestine has already succeeded" said Sir Vincent Fean, the British Consul General in Jerusalem.

A British Consulate official in Jerusalem said that the UK government will be providing funding for the Palestinian official tracksuits and suits that the team will wear at Olympic ceremonies.

Jibril Rajoub, Head of Palestinian Sport Union, stressed the importance, though through a "humble" presence, for Palestinians to attend this "moral and humanity event".

"The Olympics are a common interest for the world's nations and Palestinian participation, even if it will be humble (modest) this time, paves the way for the next participation, it makes our people proud, and it makes Palestine rise to the level of being a part of this moral and humanity event and this helps us to carry out a message to the world through sports," Rajoub said.

STORYLINE:

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas greeted supporters outside his office in Ramallah on Sunday as he prepared for a trip to the United States to seek UN recognition of a state of Palestine.

But even such recognition may not be enough for Abbas to counter the soaring popularity of Hamas in Gaza.

Abbas - formally the leader of all Palestinians but now only in charge in parts of the West Bank - was in trouble even before Israel and Hamas fought for eight days in November.

The truce that was negotiated with the help of Egypt could lead to easing Israel's long-standing Gaza border blockade.

By comparison, years of effort by Abbas to negotiate the terms of a Palestinian state with Israel have led nowhere.

And Hamas, which seized Gaza from Abbas in 2007, emerged from regional isolation after the Arab Spring uprisings brought its parent movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, to power in key countries, including Egypt.

Abbas had hoped the UN bid will allow him to seize the initiative after years of diplomatic paralysis.

Under the plan, the UN General Assembly would approve "Palestine" - made up of the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, areas Israel captured in 1967 - as a non-member observer state.

Palestine is far from being established, but UN recognition would affirm its future borders and enable the Palestinians to join UN organisations.

Israel, backed by the Obama administration, opposes the UN bid as an attempt to bypass negotiations.

Abbas says he's willing to resume talks once the 1967 borders have been recognised as the baseline, something Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refuses to do.

Israel, while willing to cede some land, says it will not withdraw to the 1967 lines, and has instead moved half a million Israelis into settlements on land seized in war.

Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton again urged Abbas in a meeting at his West Bank headquarters to drop the UN plan, said Abbas aide Saeb Erekat.

However, Abbas told Clinton and other recent visitors, including the French and German foreign ministers, that he is determined to move ahead.

STORYLINE

Two more Palestinians were killed in an Israeli air strike near the Palestinian Legislative Council in Gaza City on Friday night, in an escalation of violence that has followed the killing of a high profile Palestinian militant commander.

A Palestinian health spokesman on Saturday said that 12 militants have been killed in total.

The killing also unleashed a barrage of rockets by furious Palestinian militants from the coastal territory toward Israel's southern border communities.

One of those rockets seriously wounded an Israeli civilian and sent families scattering into bomb shelters.

The Palestinian militants were killed in seven airstrikes overnight and on Saturday morning, said Gaza health spokesman Adham Abu Salmiya.

He said some 20 more civilians were wounded by flying shrapnel from the exploding missiles, some of which targeted militants deep in civilian areas of the crowded territory.

Earlier on Friday night, an Israeli air strike in Gaza City killed two militants it claimed were about to launch rockets, and after midnight, Palestinian officials said another four were killed in and around Gaza City.

The chain of violence began after a midday air strike by Israeli forces killed Zuhair al-Qaissi, the commander of the armed wing of the Popular Resistance Committee, a large militant group closely aligned with Gaza's Hamas rulers.

The group is mostly known for carrying out the 2006 abduction of Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit Gilad Schalit, who was held captive for more than five years and freed in a prisoner swap for more than 1,000 Palestinians.

The Israeli military said al-Qaissi was plotting an infiltration attack into Israel similar to the one he orchestrated in August from the Sinai peninsula that killed eight Israelis and injured 40 more.

Palestinian witnesses said Israeli drones were seen hovering above just moments before al-Qaissi's vehicle burst into flames.

STORYLINE

On Wednesday (9th March) the Palestinian national soccer team lost out on a place at next year's Olympic Games in London after they found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-5 scoreline against Thailand on penalties in Al-Ram on the West Bank.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Bangkok, Abdul Hamid Abuhabib scored the only goal for the home side just before half-time, but they couldn't add to their advantage and after extra time they lost out in the shootout.

However, the game could assume greater importance in the years to come - it marked the first time that Palestine had hosted a competitive match at international level and their fans are hoping that the event represents another step on road to independence.

The Palestinian national football team played host to Thailand in the second leg of their Olympic qualifier in Al-Ram on the West Bank on Wednesday in a football match of great significance - it was to be the first time that Palestine had hosted an international on home soil.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the head of the Palestinian Football Union, Jibril Rajoub, said it would represent another step on the long road to independence.

The match itself was played at the Faisal Al-Husseini International Stadium in the West Bank town of Al-Ram and attracted a partisan crowd, hoping for a home victory.

Thailand won the first leg 1-0 in Bangkok and set out to defend their narrow lead - however, Palestine got back on level terms just before half-time when Abdul Hamid Abuhabib scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game.

After a goalless second half and extra time, the dreaded penalty shot-out ensued and to the dismay of the home support, which included Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and Jibril Rajoub, the Thais won out by 6 goals to five.

Nevertheless, Wednesday's match did represent a great sporting victory for Palestine.

According to Rajoub, the last time an international athletic competition took place in what are now the Palestinian territories was way back in 1934.

That game was played in east Jerusalem, then part of British Mandatory Palestine prior to Israeli independence in 1948.

The exact history behind the occasion is unclear, but it is believed a British team comprising of both Arabs and Jews lost 4-1 to an Egyptian team.

The second annual Palestine Marathon took place on Friday (11 April) in Bethlehem.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Runners pounded the streets around the West Bank city of Bethlehem on Friday as 2,500 people took part in the second annual Palestine Marathon.

But the Palestinian Olympic runner, Nader Masri, who lives in the Gaza Strip, was barred by Israel from travelling to the West Bank to participate in the race.

Masri was one of 30 runners prevented from travelling to Bethlehem, highlighting Israel's tight restrictions on travel in and out of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

The Palestine Olympic Committee said 2,500 people took part in the race, including some 700 runners from Europe.

The participants ran a half-marathon course, which is 21.0975 kilometres (13.1 miles) in length.

The race started and finished at the Church of the Nativity in Manger Square and parts of the route followed the Israeli-built West Bank separation barrier.

Israel says the barrier is needed to keep Palestinian attackers out of Israel, while Palestinians say the barrier stifles their towns and villages and cuts them off from their land.

Olympic runner Nader Masri's travel ban was upheld on Tuesday by Israel's Supreme Court, who ruled that they could not intervene in the defence minister's policy considerations, but suggested the military consider more exemptions from the travel ban.

Masri, who participated in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, trains daily on the streets in and around his home town of Beit Hanoun and does three sessions a week in the gym.

He said he was very disappointed not to have been allowed to take part in the Bethlehem race.

Even under Israel's stringent criteria, Masri should have stood a good chance of getting an exit permit.

Those permitted to leave Gaza, at least in principle, include members of the Palestinian Olympic team and the Palestinian football team, according to guidelines published in 2011 by the branch of Israel's military dealing with implementing this policy.

WEST BANK GLAMOUR AT PALESTINE FASHION WEEK

Palestinian models walked the catwalks of the West Bank on Thursday (1 MAY 2014), showcasing clothes at the only fashion event of the Palestinian Territories.

Featuring both short dresses and conservatives frocks with headscarves, the second Palestine Fashion Week attracted a crowd of local fashionistas in Ramallah - the administrative and financial capital of the West Bank.

Jordanian-Palestinian designer Intisar Abdo said her collection was inspired by Palestinian and Jordanian heritage.

"I worked on developing the traditional concept and present it with a new design and a new look. I used different kind of fabric, especially chiffon and natural silk," Abdo explained.

The traditional, embroidered dresses that have been worn for centuries by Palestinian women were the this year's novelty, said Tamer Halabi, managing director of "Modelicious" - the modelling agency behind the event.

"The message of this event is to show that we Palestinians exist. We are surviving, we have talents, we have designers, and we can compete with world fashion houses," said Halabi.

Along with dresses from local designers, models at Palestine Fashion Week also showcased collections available in Palestinian shops.

Palestine Fashion Week runs from the 1 - 3 May 2014.

Senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat described on Friday the Israeli government's decision to stop transferring tax money to Palestinians as "piracy".

The Israeli government announced the move on Thursday and said it was in retaliation for the Palestinians' recent drive for further United Nations recognition

Erekat said if the Israeli government "chose this path of business as usual, it cannot be maintained".

Under interim peace accords, Israel collects taxes on behalf of the Palestinians and transfers about 100 (m) million US dollars a month.

Without it, the Palestinian Authority likely couldn't pay the salaries of its tens of thousands of employees.

STORYLINE:

Palestine has begun hosting qualifying matches for the 2014 AFC Women's Asian Cup for the first time, with Group D fixtures taking place at Al Ram's Faisal Al-Huseni International Stadium from Tuesday (21st May) until Saturday (25th May).

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Palestine, Chinese Taipei, Myanmar and India will play each other in Al Ram over the course of this week, with the group winners progressing to the AFC Women's Asian Cup finals in Japan next year.

The opening match at the Faisal Al-Huseni Stadium was between Palestine and Chinese Taipei.

It was no surprise that the three-time continental champions won the encounter - 6-0 the scale of Palestine's defeat.

Chinese Taipei went ahead after just five minutes and never looked back.

"Frankly, the Palestinian team need to be fitter and more aware tactically in their play and we can see that the Chinese team has better fitness and are sharper tactically, so they are playing better than the Palestinian team," said spectator Yaheah Salieh from Ramallah.

Fellow fan Sahar Salieh was just pleased to see the Palestinian women's team participate at such a high level.

Lin Ya-han, who opened the scoring, netted twice more in the second half to complete her hat-trick.

"We are not happy with the result of the game, 6-0, but the body fitness and the experience of the Chinese players had an effect on this result," Palestinian striker Israa Alzabon said later.

In Tuesday's other match, Myanmar beat India 2-0.

Palestine take on Myanmar on Thursday (23rd May) in the second round of matches before they complete their programme against India on Saturday.

Brazilian football star Ronaldo received a hero's welcome in the Palestinian city of Ramallah, with hundreds of well wishers jostling to get a glimpse of the Real Madrid footballer during a visit on Monday. (16th May 2005)

Ronaldo, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Program was on a one day visit to the region which also included a trip to Israel.

He was there to participate in a UNDP project that brings young Israeli and Palestinian football players together.

Surrounded by a tight ring of bodyguards to get through the chanting crowds, Ronaldo first visited the office of Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia where he signed footballs.

The beaming Qureia escorted Ronaldo out of the building before he continued on to a local school, where the superstar received yet another boisterous welcome.

Later on, Ronaldo visited Israel as a special guest of the Peres Centre for peace.

STORYLINE:

Hamas militants stormed a Palestine TV broadcast facility in the southern Gaza Strip on Monday, kicking workers out of the building and destroying equipment in a shooting rampage, employees said.

There were no reports of injuries.

The incident in Khan Younis came amid growing tensions between the Hamas-led government and President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement.

The broadcast authority is controlled by Abbas.

A Hamas spokesman denied any Hamas involvement in the incident.

About 15 gunmen fired in the air as they entered the building. "You are collaborators. You are biased. You are dirty people," they screamed, according to the workers.

The gunmen expelled employees from the building, beat up a cameraman and fired their weapons at cameras and other equipment, the witnesses said.

They left the building after several minutes.

Employees later staged a half-hour strike to protest against the building's takeover.

The facility is used to transmit signals for state-run television and radio broadcasts.

STORYLINE:

The leader of a small PLO faction was killed Monday when three Israeli tank shells hit his office. Israel said the shelling was an "initiated action."

The man killed was Mustafa Zibri, widely known as Abu Ali Mustafa.

He was the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a radical PLO faction that opposes peace talks with Israel.

He was the highest-ranking Palestinian official killed in a pinpointed Israeli attack.

The Palestinians accused Israel of further escalation of the violence.

Zibri was in his second-floor office, near Arafat's headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah, when three tank shells hit the building, Palestinian security officials said.

Zibri's body was torn apart in the attack, doctors said.

The missiles blew out two corner windows, and smoke blackened the facade.

The Israeli army said in a statement that the PFLP headquarters were shelled in an "initiated action."

The army said the PLO faction has been responsible for dozens of attacks on Israelis, including a failed bombing in Jerusalem last week.

More than 50 Palestinians have been killed in pinpointed Israeli attacks in the last 11 months of fighting, most of them militants suspected of involvement in attacks on Israelis.

However, some of the victims have been bystanders, including two children.

Earlier Monday, Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said he would press to arrange truce talks with Arafat, despite a violent weekend during which seven Israelis and four Palestinians were killed.

However, it was not clear whether the Palestinians would attend such talks after the killing of the PFLP leader.

The Jews, having decided their position was untenable, surrendered the old city of Jerusalem. On the day before the truce King Abdullah of Transjordan visited the City and prayed in the Mosque of Omar.

Palestinian Football Federation threatens to urge next month's FIFA Congress in Brazil to take sanctions against Israel in protest against alleged recent attacks by soldiers on Palestinian sportsmen in the occupied territories.

Jibril Rajoub, president of the Palestinian Football Federation (PFF), threatened to call for sanctions against Israel in protest against alleged recent attacks by Israeli soldiers against Palestinian sportsmen.

Rajoub, who is also head of the Palestine Olympic Committee, referred to the recent arrest of a Palestine footballer and the shooting of two other players who were reportedly shot in the legs by Israel soldiers.

Jawhar Nasser Jawhar, 19, and Adam Abd al-Raouf Halabiya, 17, were allegedly shot at al-Zaayyem checkpoint near Abu Dis in Jerusalem as they walked home from their sports club.

Doctors have since confirmed the pair is unlikely to be able to play sports again due to the severity of their injuries.

On returning from Jordan where they received treatment they were arrested.

Last month a player of Palestine national soccer team, Sameh Moraebe, 22, was arrested by Israeli military forces en route to Qatar.

Coach Jamal Mahmoud has denounced the arrest of the players.

PFF is threatening to take its grievances to the FIFA Congress in Sao Paulo on June 10th-11th that will be held just before the start of the World Cup in Brazil.

The Palestinians have long accused Israel of restricting sport people's mobility inside the West Bank and between the West Bank and Gaza, preventing players from participating in international tournaments and banning the entry of sports equipment that Palestinian teams and stadiums need.

Israel justifies these measures on security grounds.

Rajoub had previously raised the issue of travel for Palestinian athletes at the FIFA congress in Mauritius in June last year. There, he said that, should the matter not be resolved, he would call on delegates to expel Israel at the next congress

The 150th-ranked Palestine football team's next important international match, when it needs players to travel freely, is at the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup, to be held in the Maldives over May 19-30.

The winner of the eight-nation tournament advances to the 2015 Asian Cup in Australia.

STORYLINE:

sntv talks to Maher Abu Rmeileh, the first Palestinian athlete to have qualified for an Olympic Games on merit instead of a wild-card invite, when he competed at the 2012 Olympics in London.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

Born in East Jerusalem, judo champion Maher Abu Rmeileh is also a family man, with two young sons.

By day, he works in his family's shop selling scarves, by night he heads to the training centre to enhance his techniques, to try and reach higher levels in the years to come.

Abu Rmeileh is ranked 162nd in the world for his category (73-kilograms) by the International Judo Federation.

He was only five years old when his father, Shafik, a judo coach, introduced him to the combat sport.

As he grew up, he took part in several championships; the most recent was the one that allowed him to make history.

Abu Rmeileh competed in an international judo competition in Tokyo in the 73-kg (roughly 161-pound) weight-class and managed to beat several opponents including the best judoka from Hong Kong and, based largely on his scores, he had accumulated the necessary points to qualify for the London Olympic Games.

10 other Palestinian athletes have competed in the Olympics since 1996, but they failed to meet the qualification standard and attended thanks to a special IOC invitation.

Abu Rmeileh, however, is the first to have qualified on his own merit.

In London 2012, he made it to the men's -73kg elimination round of 32, where he was knocked out by Belgian Dirk van Tichelt.

With sweat dripping down his face, and with a broad grin, Abu Rmeileh joyously recalled the day he got the news that he'd qualified for London.

His participation in the Olympics was the culmination of 21 years of practising judo, initially accompanying his judoka father.

At the training centre, one of Abu Rmeileh's cousins, Wassim also aims to reach the Olympics for Palestine.

Even if Maher couldn't achieve the gold medal at London, his qualification has been noted as an outstanding achievement and is surely to inspire the young generation in a country lacking sponsorship and facilities.

World Cup trophy put on display in Ramallah.

At least nine people were injured on Tuesday morning as Israel continued to launch airstrikes on the Gaza strip, according to Palestinian officials.

Several airstrikes hit the city of Khan Younis overnight.

The wounded were taken to the city's Naseer Hospital, where they were treated for light and moderate injuries.

A separate airstrike hit Gaza City.

It targeted an empty building which had previously been the Palestinian Authority's Intelligence headquarters and it is now controlled by the Islamic militant group Hamas.

The Israeli military has said the airstrikes in the Gaza strip are targeting militants involved in firing rockets at Israel.

Two Palestinians were killed and one was injured late on Sunday in an Israeli airstrike in the Al-Bureij area of Gaza, according to Palestinian medical officials.

Relatives said the victims belonged to a militant group.

The injured man was taken to the Al-Aqsa Brigades hospital in the town of Deir al-Balah in Gaza early on Monday morning, and the two bodies were placed in the hospital's morgue.

The Israeli military said late on Sunday that it carried out an airstrike on militants involved in firing rockets at Israel.

It said at least 25 rockets were fired at Israel from Gaza over the course of the day.

A wave of violent protests in Arab sections of Israel were set off this week after a Palestinian boy was abducted and burned alive.

Palestinians accuse Israeli extremists of killing the youth in revenge for the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank.

Israel has blamed militant group Hamas for the deaths of the teenagers.

The Palestinian government has condemned Israel's announcement on Thursday that it is advancing plans for 1,500 new settlement housing units in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

Palestinian government spokesperson Ehab Bessaiso said the new settlement units undermined "international efforts towards achieving a two-state solution".

The Israeli housing ministry said that it had issued tenders late on Wednesday for about 900 housing units in the West Bank and about 560 units in east Jerusalem, territories that Israel captured in the 1967 war and which the Palestinians claim for their future state.

The tenders represent the final governmental approval before construction can begin.

Israel said the move was in response to the formation of a Palestinian unity government backed by the Islamic militant group Hamas.
