A leading FIFA representative tried on Friday (2nd October) to defuse a row between Israel and Palestine.

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

A Palestine proposal to throw Israel out of FIFA for obstructing the free movement of players and equipment was dropped at the FIFA Congress in May.

Instead, they settled for the establishment of a monitoring group led by South African businessman and human rights activist Tokyo Sexwale.

But a recent move to switch Palestine's forthcoming World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia from home soil to neutral ground has caused anger in the region.

Palestine's FA has protested both to FIFA President Sepp Blatter and to Asian Football Association chief Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa.

Sheikh Salman was one of the three pivotal figures, along with Michel Platini and Kuwait's Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad al-Sabah, who made the decision in favour of the Saudis.

Blatter has made it a priority to try and build lasting trust between Palestinian and Israeli officials.

To that end, Sexwale proposed a symbolic game between Israel and Palestine.

AFC president Sheikh Salman visited the Palestine Football Association in Ramallah on Monday (23rd April).

FIFA president Sepp Blatter visits Ramallah in Palestine on Wednesday (20th May), after his 'mission of peace' trip to Israel.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter said on Wednesday (20th May) he is on a 'mission of peace' to resolve tensions between the Israeli and Palestinian soccer federations in the hope of staving off a Palestinian bid to oust Israel from the world governing body.

As part of his vision of using sports as a bridge between people, on Tuesday (19th May), Blatter proposed holding a peace match in Zurich between the Israeli and Palestinian national teams.

Seated alongside Blatter, the president of the Israeli federation, Ofer Eini, immediately accepted the offer.

But the main issue bringing the FIFA president to the region appeared to remain unresolved.

Palestinians say Israeli security restrictions are limiting movement of Palestinian players, visiting teams and soccer equipment and have put forward a proposal to suspend Israel from world soccer at the 209-nation FIFA meeting on 29th May.

Blatter met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Wednesday and paid a visit to the Al-Jalazon refugee camp.

Blatter said he hoped to reach a quick solution to the crisis and perhaps even spark further cooperation between the sides.

Israel has cited security concerns as the reason behind the occasional restrictions placed on Palestinian players, particularly in the Gaza Strip, which is ruled by the Islamic militant group Hamas.

Rotem Kemer, the Israeli federation's chief executive, said Israel has approved more than 95 per cent of the Palestinian requests this year for players to move between Gaza and the West Bank and to travel abroad.

The Palestinian FA president Fibril Rajoub said he would back whichever FIFA presidential candidate supported his campaign to have Israel suspended from the football's world governing body.

He also gave his reaction to the arrests of FIFA members in Zurich on Wednesday (27th May).

Rajoub has proposed a controversial motion to have Israel suspended, one that is scheduled to be debated on either Thursday or Friday when FIFA's congress meets in Zurich.

In order to pass, the motion would require the support of three-quarters of its 209 member federations.

Rajoub has a number of key concerns.

He argues that Israel violates FIFA bylaws by preventing freedom of movement for Palestinian soccer players. Furthermore, Rajoub claims there are five FIFA-registered teams in settlements located in the occupied West Bank.

And he maintains that Israel has done nothing to crack down on anti-Arab racist chants sometimes produced by fans at games in Israel.

The Israel Football Association rejects the charges.

This is the third time that Rajoub had put forward a motion to eject Israel from FIFA.

Previously he was persuaded to back down by FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

Palestinians will now be hoping that the United States and Switzerland's investigations into corruption in FIFA won't obscure their call to expel Israel from the body.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter met with Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas on Monday (26th May), as part of his regional tour to Jordan, Palestine and Israel.

Al-Ahly thrashed Gouna 13- 0 in the Egypt Cup round of 16 on the 13th of August.

The 13-0 record victory was the highest registered in an official game in Egyptian football since the 11-0 league win for Masry against Beni Suef in 1962/1963 season and Olympic's 11-0 win against El-Tag El Malaki in the King Cup in 1929.

The West Bank based Ahli al-Khalil were crowned 2015 Palestine Cup champions following their 2-1 win against Gaza's Ittihad al-Shejaiya in a historic match in Hebron on Friday, 14th August.

Al-Ahly will now represent Palestine in Asian competitions.

Usain Bolt won the men's 200 metres final at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China on the 27th of August - while Moroccan Rababe Arafi narrowly won the first heat with a new personal best in the 800 metres of one minute, 58.55 seconds.

A great finish from Elijah Motonei Manangoi of Kenya saw him come from far behind the leading pack on the final straight to take silver, denying Morocco's Abdalaati Iguider who fell over as he crossed the line to claim the bronze in the 1500-metres.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan is in the running for the role of FIFA president and said on 9th September that he will fight to make soccer's scandal-scarred governing body more transparent.

The prince ran in the previous FIFA election in May, denying long-time incumbent Sepp Blatter a majority in the first round of voting.

He stepped aside before the second round.

The FIFA election will be held in February 2016.

Japan beat Syria 3-0 on October 8th in Seeb, Oman in an AFC World Cup qualifier.

Later in October, Syria defeated Afghanistan 5-2, before beating Singapore 2-1 on the 17th of November.

They are currently second in their group with 15 points, one points behind leaders Japan.

Al Ahly won Egypt's Super Cup for the ninth time on October 15th - beating rivals Zamalek 3-2 at the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

However, Zamalek were crowned African handball champions in late October, beating Tunisia's Club Africain 35-22 in the 2015 African Champions League final in Nador, Morocco.

On the 8th of November, TP Mazembe of DR Congo won the CAF Champions League final with a win over USM Alger.

Alger made the final after defeating Al-Hilal Omdurman of Sudan 2-1 on aggregate.

TP Mazembe joined them after defeating Al-Merreikh of Sudan 4-2 over two legs.

Title holders Es Setif of Algeria didn't make it to the finals this year and were knocked out of the group stage - after having only secured five points from six games.

For the first time, two other Algerian teams played in the group stages - USM Alger and MC El Eulma.

Palestine drew 0-0 against both UAE on the 8th of September and Saudi Arabia on the 9th of November in 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

The game against Saudi was moved from the original venue in Al-Ram because access required entry through an Israeli border post - and Saudi Arabia does not recognise Israel.

Saudi Arabia refused to play in Palestine - and the match was postponed a few times before being finally played in Jordan.

The teams played in Jeddah in June in the first of their two scheduled Asia Zone World Cup qualifiers, with the Saudis winning 3-2.

Palestine are now third in Group A with nine points, Saudi are top of the group with 16 points, three points ahead of second-placed UAE.

Algeria defeated visitors Tanzania 7-0 in a World Cup CAF qualifier on 17th November, to the relief of under-pressure manager Christian Gourcuff.

They qualified for the third round with Tunisia, who defeated Mauritania 4-2 on aggregate.

Libya, Egypt and Morocco also made it to the third round, but Sudan failed to qualify.

Elsewhere, the Oman FA sacked national team manager Paul Le Guen after an embarrassing 2-1 defeat against Turkmenistan in the AFC and World Cup qualifiers on November 19th.

in the CAF Confederation Cup, Etoile du Sahel won the final 2-1 on aggregate against South Africa's Orlando Pirates and were crowned champions in the for a second time, having also clinched the title in 2006.

Finally, Ahmed Khalil was named the 2015 AFC Player of the Year, with the UAE and Al-Ahli striker becoming only the third person to have received the senior and youth individual accolades - after winning the youngster's award in 2008.

A look back at some of the sporting highlights from the first half of 2014 in the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) region.

Early in the new year (29th January) there were scenes of jubilation in Libya.

Football fans and patriots alike swarmed out onto the streets to celebrate after their team reached the final of the African National Championships.

Libya beat Zimbabwe 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out in their semi-final, following a goalless draw in regulation time.

The Libyans went on to win the title just a few days later (1st February) after beating Ghana 4-3 in another penalty shoot-out.

Jordan's women were busy making last-minute preparations for the Women's Asian Cup at the start of February (5th February).

Jordan claimed the final qualifying spot with a 4-0 win over Uzbekistan to top qualifying Group A with a perfect record, following victories over Lebanon and Kuwait.

The Jordanians played in Group A in the finals but lost to Vietnam, Australia and Japan.

Elsewhere, football was being used as a tool to lift the sprits in Syrian refugee camps.

In February, SNTV visited the Az Zaatari camp in Jordan to watch children enjoy a kick-about.

Camp officials, in collaboration with various footballing, human rights and voluntary organisations, were attempting to to use sport - and particularly football - to help bring a little joy during hard times for many.

Jacky Chamoun was mired in controversy shortly after the conclusion of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games.

The Lebanese skier thanked supporters on February 15th after footage emerged of her posing topless in the snow during her participation in Russia.

Fans immediately took to social media to criticise politicians for targeting the young athlete while seemingly ignoring corruption, nepotism, bombings and a litany of other problems in Lebanon.

Algerian Djamel Belmadi was installed as the new coach of Qatar's national team.

Belmadi replaced Fahad Thani, who had been placed in charge of the Olympic squad.

An ex-international midfielder, Belmadi had guided Lekhwiya to the Qatar Stars League title in both 2011 and 2012.

Less than nine months before their country was due to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Moroccan Football Federation (MFF) appointed Badou Zaki as a new coach for the national team in May.

The former Moroccan international replaced interim boss Hassan Benabicha.

Zaki played for Morocco at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the World Cup two years later in Mexico, where he played a key role in helping the Moroccan team qualify for the second round.

As it turned out, Equatorial Guinea were later in the year chosen to host AFCON 2015 in place of Morocco after the latter's refusal to stage the tournament amid fears over the spread of the Ebola epidemic.

In May, Jordan hosted The Soccerex Asian Forum at the King Hussein Convention Centre - in partnership with the Asian Football Development Project.

Prince Ali Al Hussein, several football administrators and various icons of the game attended the two-day conference, which focused on the development of the sport across Asia.

The president of the Palestinian Football Federation (PFF), Jibril Rajoub threatened to call for sanctions against Israel in protest at alleged attacks by Israeli soldiers against Palestinian sportsmen.

The PFF warned it would take its grievances to the FIFA Congress in Sao Paulo early in June, shortly before the start of the 2014 World Cup.

The Palestinians have long accused Israel of restricting sportspersons' mobility inside the West Bank and between the West Bank and Gaza, preventing players from participating in international tournaments and banning the entry of sports equipment that Palestinian teams and stadiums need.

Israel has justified its measures on security grounds.

As part of his regional tour to Jordan, Palestine and Israel FIFA president Sepp Blatter described himself as "a self-declared ambassador of the Palestinian people" after meeting Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah in late May (26th May).

President Abbas had earlier criticised Israeli interference in the affairs of the Palestinian Football Association and called for action.

The Algerian national football team arrived in Brazil on June 8th hoping that a fourth appearance in the World Cup finals would produce their best showing yet.

After their participation in the 1986 tournament, the north Africans hadn't qualified again for football's showpiece event until 2010.

Algeria fans then celebrated as their team reached the knockout stages of a World Cup for the first time on 27th June.

The 'Desert Foxes' put in some excellent displays to beat South Korea 4-2 and hold Russia to a 1-1 draw in Group H.

They then took on the mighty Germany, taking the match into extra-time, only to be narrowly defeated 2-1.

Thousands lined the streets of Algiers to welcome home their footballing heroes, as the Algerian squad were paraded round the city in an open-top bus on July 2nd.

In Beit Milleit, Miguel Layun's northern Lebanese ancestral village, dozens gathered in front of a giant television screen in June to cheer the footballer on.

In the village's main square, about 100 people watched the Mexico versus the Netherlands World Cup match.

"Nearly 90 per cent of the people here support Mexico because of Miguel," said banker Simon Layun, a second cousin of the Mexican national team player.

The Ivory Coast Football Federation (FIF) confirmed on June 20th the sad news that the younger brother of national team players Yaya and Kolo Toure had died.

The FIF said Ibrahim Toure, who himself played professional football for a club in Lebanon (Al-Safa Beirut Sporting Club), passed away on June 19th.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter spoke on Tuesday (7 April) at the 37th Ordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), held in Cairo, Egypt.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter says he does not want to see Israel suspended from world football for allegedly hampering teams in Palestine and will try to make sure it doesn't happen at FIFA's congress next month.

Blatter was asked about the issue at the Confederation of African Football's congress in Cairo on Tuesday.

Palestine's football federation has accused Israel of restricting the movement of Palestinian players between Gaza and the West Bank and has said it will submit a proposal for Israel's suspension at the FIFA congress in Zurich at the end of next month.

Blatter said suspending a national federation for any reason "is always something which harms the whole organisation."

Blatter said he was due to meet Palestine football federation president Jibril Rajoub in Cairo later on Tuesday.

The head of African football says his entire continent will back Sepp Blatter for re-election as FIFA president next month.

Issa Hayatou, president of the Confederation of African Football, made the comment in his speech at the opening of its congress in Cairo on Tuesday.

Hayatou referred to Blatter as "dear Sepp," and said CAF's 54 member countries would all vote for the 79-year-old Swiss in FIFA's presidential election in Zurich on May 29.

Hayatou said Blatter was "at home" in Africa and not in "hostile territory," an apparent reference to the criticism Blatter received when he attended the UEFA congress last month.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter meets Prince Ali Bin al-Hussein, the vice-president Asia-FIFA in Amman, the capital of Jordan, on Monday (26th May).

A female pro-Palestine protester was ejected from the FIFA Congress in Zurich during the embattled FIFA President Sepp Blatter's opening address on Friday (29 May).

A lone female protester waving a Palestine flag and shouting at FIFA President Sepp Blatter was led away by security staff as the FIFA Congress got underway on Friday.

Blatter, sitting on the podium, called for security and asked for all access points to be made secure when the protester interrupted the proceedings.

The Jordanian royal is poised to declare his candidacy for president of FIFA imminently, promising to bring reform and transparency to the scandal-scarred organisation.

Football officials arrived at the 65th FIFA Congress in Zurich on Friday, ahead of a presidential election in which FIFA president Sepp Blatter is a seeking a fifth term.

The two criminal investigations into corruption allegations have cast a new shadow on Blatter's 17-year reign as president of FIFA this week.

The 209 FIFA member nations will decide on Friday whether to stick with the 79-year-old Blatter or vote for Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan.

Meanwhile, outside of the Hallenstadion where the vote was set to take place, two separate protests were being held - one from a pro-Palestinian group against Israel's inclusion in FIFA and another highlighting the lack of worker's rights in Qatar, host of the 2022 World Cup.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter made no comment about the Qatar 2022 corruption claims - but he did dance.

Blatter steered away from anything controversial as he made a speech to open the FIFA Congress.

Ronaldo and FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke embraced as Blatter implored the members of FIFA to concentrate on "catching up with old friends".

Before the congress, Greg Dyke, the chairman of the Football Association, said that FIFA would not be able to bury their heads in the sand for much longer.

There was a slight moment of controversy in the auditorium as Arab Idol winner Mohammad Assaf shouted 'Viva Palestine' on stage.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino agued that football's world governing body had turned a corner and that the corruption scandals of the past "cannot happen any more" as he addressed a press conference after a FIFA Council meeting in Kolkata, India on Friday (27th October).

England will take on Spain in the showpiece match of the first major football tournament to be staged in India.

Speaking to the media following his official duties, Infantino tried to present the governing body as a reformed, forward-looking organisation, but was soon reminded of the scandals of the past under his predecessor Sepp Blatter.

On Thursday (26th October) Hector Trujillo, a former judge who led Guatemala's football federation, was sentenced to eight months in prison in the United States on conspiracy and wire fraud charges.

"You know these are cases of the past. I don't want to speak about the past, I want to talk about the future," Infantino said. "I already thanked all the authorities, the Americans or from any other part of the world, who have uncovered certain malpractices in football. As far as FIFA is concerned, these things, they cannot happen any more. We have put in place systems and processes to make sure that everything we do is in line with all the requirements that need to be fulfilled."

"Two years ago, FIFA couldn't probably speak to any broadcaster or any potential sponsor because it was considered to be a toxic mark," he continued. "Well, today the doors are open, the revenues come in and we will exceed the budget certainly in terms of revenues. At the same time, we are much much more transparent in terms of costs which again shows where these revenues are going, I think."

On a more positive note, Infantino announced that there would be changes to the bidding processes for selecting the hosts of future FIFA tournaments.

"There will be technical report, which again for the first time in FIFA's history, will have the consequence of even eliminating bidders who do not comply with some minimum requirements," he said. "There is a whole process which will also be accompanied, and is also for the first time, by an independent external auditor, who will supervise the whole process, so I think we have done whatever it's humanly possible to do in order to ensure a solid bidding process."

Also, FIFA has decided to bring to an end a long-running attempt to bring about a peace between the Israeli and Palestinian football federations.

The talks, begun under Blatter, tried to resolve the issue of teams from Israeli settlements on disputed land playing in Israeli competitions in apparent breach of FIFA statutes.

"It's not about FIFA being fine or not fine. There are clubs playing or not playing in territories which are considered by the UN resolution as occupied territory, Infantino said. "That's not the question. FIFA Council has taken a decision, that's not delayed a decision, has taken a decision, and the decision is to close the matter because it was felt, as I was saying that some progress has been made, at least some football is played in that region. Jerome Champagne discusses FIFA presidential bid.

There will be at least one Frenchman in the race for the FIFA presidency after Jerome Champagne, a former senior FIFA official, threw his hat into the ring on Friday (October 23).

Champagne has submitted eight nomination letters from national associations - he had intended to run in the May election but failed to get the minimum five nominations on that occasion.

In a letter to FIFA's 209 member associations, he says: "With determination and respect, I come before you again as candidate for the presidency of FIFA for the elections on 26 February 2016.

"The events of the past few months have renewed my determination to be a candidate."

Champagne worked under outgoing FIFA president Sepp Blatter as deputy general secretary of the world governing body until he was forced out in 2010.

He is known to be no friend of Michel Platini, the UEFA president who is also intending to run for FIFA but has been provisionally banned for 90 days by FIFA's ethics committee pending a hearing into a payment he received that was signed off by Blatter in 2011.

Champagne's announcement comes ahead of Monday's deadline for the February 26 vote and he joins fellow Frenchman Platini (subject to his suspension being lifted), Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan and former Trinidad and Tobago player David Nakhid in submitting his nomination.

Asian Football Confederation president Sheikh Salman al-Khalifa from Bahrain is also set to stand.

Champagne said the timing of his departure from FIFA meant he had no connection with the scandals that emanated from the 2018 and 2022 World Cup votes in December 2010, or the presidential election the following year.

Champagne has promised to help the smaller and poorer associations, encourage clubs to keep young players rather than sell them, introduce video technology to help referees and bring more transparency into the running of FIFA.

His plan includes cutting Europe's influence by reducing its places on FIFA's executive committee and the 13 spots it has at World Cup finals.

Champagne worked as an advisor to Blatter from 1999 to 2002 before holding the positions of deputy secretary general, delegate of the president and director of international relations.

Michael van Praag, Chairman of the Dutch FA and a candidate for the FIFA Presidency up until last week when he pulled out of the race, said he expected a closely fought race on Friday.

Meanwhile, there were two separate protests as FIFA officials arrived.

Pro-Palestinian protesters were calling for Israel to be expelled from FIFA, blocked a road opposite the Hallenstadion and had to be pushed back by police.

On the other side of the square, another group of demonstrators gathered to protest against the lack of working rights in Qatar, host of the 2022 World Cup.

Protesters staged a graveyard, representing the workers who have died during stadium construction for the World Cup in seven years time.

Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Centre asks FIFA to expel Jibril Rajoub, the head of the Palestinian football Association, Jibril Rajoub, for "violating FIFA's statutes."

SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

An Israel-based rights organisation urged FIFA President Sepp Blatter on Tuesday (26th May) to expel the head of the Palestinian football Association, Jibril Rajoub, for "violating FIFA's statutes."

Nitsana Darshan-Leitner the founder of Shurat HaDin, said Rajoub should not be a representative who has access to FIFA.

Earlier this week Rajoub said that he is pressing ahead with his bid to oust Israel from FIFA despite efforts from its President, Sepp Blatter, to defuse the crisis.

Blatter was recently in the region on a self-described "mission of peace" to resolve tensions between the two sides.

Palestinians say Israeli security restrictions are limiting the movement of Palestinian players, visiting teams and equipment and have put forward a proposal to suspend Israel from world soccer at the 209-nation FIFA meeting on 29th May.

Blatter opposes the suspension vote, saying Israel has not broken FIFA statutes in a political issue outside of soccer's control.

"Jibril Rajoub is a person that for many years incited to kill Israelis, that was involved with endorsing terrorist with calling to enticement against Israelis. He called (for) Jihad against Israelis, even said that the fight between Israel and the Palestinians have to be fought with all means, even if the Palestinians had nuclear weapon, they would have used it against Israel. He has been serving as a deputy secretary of the Fatah, which is a terror organisation, a terror organisation that was involved in the Munich Massacre in 1972, killed 11 Israelis, and since then have been involved with many other terror attacks, many Israelis got killed and injured. And he is the head of the Palestinian football authority which is a member in FIFA."

FIFA president Sepp Blatter is facing a challenge from 39-year-old FIFA vice president Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan.

Declaring that "it is time for a change," FIFA vice president Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein announced on Tuesday that he will be a candidate for the FIFA presidency on May 29 in Zurich, where Sepp Blatter will seek re-election at the age of 79.

"The message I heard, over and over, was that it is time for a change," said a statement from Prince Ali, who has been encouraged to run by European football governing body UEFA and its president, Michel Platini.

Platini, who opted last year not to challenge his onetime mentor Blatter, is "very pleased" with the prince's decision, according to the former France star's spokesman, Pedro Pinto, said Tuesday.

Prince Ali is considered the main challenger to Blatter - although Jerome Champagne of France, a former FIFA staffer and longtime ally of Blatter, has also announced his intention to run.

During Blatter's 17-year leadership, FIFA has been rocked by bribery allegations in presidential and World Cup hosting elections, kickbacks paid to senior officials and World Cup ticket scams.

FIFA's image sank further last month when ethics prosecutor Michael Garcia resigned with a parting shot at Blatter's leadership style and the organization's seeming unwillingness to reform itself.

FIFA member federations - which elect the president in a secret ballot - have also shown little desire to remove Blatter as they receive increasing shares of billion-dollar annual income from commercial deals tied to the World Cup, sports' most-watched event.

Prince Ali has led Jordan's football federation since 1999 and the following year founded the West Asian Football Federation.

At FIFA, he led the successful campaign to lift a ban on female Islamic players wearing headscarves in its competitions.
