South Korea conducted a nationwide emergency exercise on Friday to raise awareness about fire safety.

The Mayor of Seoul Park Won-soon, took part in the training outside Seoul City Hall, learning how to use a fire extinguisher and fire hose.

City Hall was evacuated and its employees were trained in safety fire safety and resuscitation techniques.

It was the first nationwide safety drill to be conducted since the Sewol ferry disaster in April.

Across the South Korean capital, Seoul, spring festivities have been put on hold out of respect to the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster and their families.

Instead of celebrating a season associated with renewal and rebirth, Seoul residents from many walks of life said on Tuesday they found it far more appropriate to join together in mourning.

In light of the tragedy, Seoul National University student council decided to postpone their spring festival scheduled for May, after their midterm exams.

The Sheraton Grande Walkerhill Hotel has cancelled its "signature events", like wine and beer fairs, in recognition of the national mourning which has so many South Koreans in its thrall.

Kim Hong-hee, director of the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA), said the museum has chosen not to go ahead with a number of events in its spring schedule.

"We thought that in this current nationwide atmosphere of mourning, for the Sewol ferry sinking, such events were a little inappropriate," she said.

Nearly a week has passed since the Sewol ferry sank off South Korea's southern coast on 16 April.

The confirmed death toll from the disaster reached 113 on Tuesday, officials said, and about 190 people were still missing, thought to be trapped underwater inside the sunken vessel.

South Korea's state-run forensic lab said on Friday it had failed to find why a fugitive billionaire, blamed for April's Sewol ferry disaster, had died.

Police said earlier this week that a badly decomposed body found in rural South Korea last month had been identified as that of Yoo Byung-eun.

Authorities had been looking for the 73-year-old, believing he owned the sunken ferry, and that his alleged corruption may have contributed to the disaster.

The state-run National Forensic Service said on Friday that Yoo's body was too badly decayed to determine whether he died of disease.

April's disaster, the worst in South Korea in decades, left more than 300 people dead or missing, mostly high school students.

South Korea's central bank cut its key interest rate for the first time in 15 months on Thursday, providing support to an economy dragged down by the shock of a ferry sinking that killed hundreds of teenagers.

The Bank of Korea lowered its policy rate by a quarter percentage point to 2.25 percent.

The bank had kept it unchanged since a rate cut in May 2013.

Analysts had predicted the bank to lower borrowing costs to boost consumer spending, which turned negative due to the shock of the Sewol ferry disaster earlier this year.

Last month, the bank cut this year's growth forecast for Asia's fourth-largest economy to 3.8 percent from 4.0 percent.

Weak domestic spending has been a source of concern.

South Korea's new finance minister unveiled stimulus measures in July to encourage spending by consumers and companies.

The bank was expected to aid the government's stimulus moves as low inflationary pressure gives room for easing.

The sinking in April of the Sewol ferry killed 294 people and left 10 missing, mostly teenagers on a school trip, causing a national outpouring of grief.

Relatives of victims of the sunken South Korean ferry 'Sewol' staged a sit-in early on Friday.

The large crowd had initially marched towards the Blue House in Seoul, calling for a meeting with President Park Geun-hye, but police blocked their path so they sat down on the streets near the presidential palace.

"We should rather die than leave here," said a family representative Kim Byung-kwon.

Victim's relatives are pushing for a direct meeting with President Park to discuss concerns about the rescue operation.

Relatives of the dead and missing passengers and many other South Koreans have been highly critical of the government's handling of the rescue effort, and the regulatory failures that may have allowed the disaster to happen.

Park has apologised over the sinking at least three times but her apologies came during meetings with top officials and religious leaders.

More than three weeks after the sinking, 273 bodies have been retrieved but 31 others are still listed as missing.

Searches have been hampered by strong currents, bad weather and floating debris inside the ship.

A civil defence drill was held at the National Museum of Korea on Wednesday to help prepare citizens for possible disasters, such as fires and earthquakes.

The drill was part of a nationwide civil defence training programme, which began precisely at 2 p.m local time (0500 GMT) at several locations at the same time.

Employees evacuated the museum building upon hearing a siren.

They then attended various education sessions, including how to put out a fire and how to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

South Korea has been plagued by several disasters in 2014.

More than 300 people were killed when the ferry 'Sewol' capsized back in April and only last week 16 people lost their lives when a ventilation grate they were standing on to watch a pop concert caved in under their feet.

The nationwide civil defence drill will be held until Thursday.

Thousands gathered in a square in the centre of the South Korean capital Seoul on Saturday for a candlelight vigil in memory of the victims of last month's ferry disaster and to demand punishment for those responsible.

Many held placards calling for President Park Geun-hye to take responsibility for the April 16 sinking of the Sewol which left over 300 people dead or missing.

The vigil was organised by several organisations, including People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, and Mom's Yellow Handkerchief.

They called on the government to reveal the truth about the sinking, and to punish those responsible for what they say was the mishandling of the emergency on board the ferry.

Out of 476 passengers, 285 bodies have been found dead and 19 victims still remain unaccounted for.

Protesters say that the president, government ministries including South Korean Oceans and Fisheries Ministry, and Coast Guard were all responsible for the aftermath, and have asked for a special investigation into the disaster.

Families of the dead and missing have complained about miscommunications and delays, and about early erroneous reports from the government that most of the ferry's 476 passengers survived.

President Park has apologised, and the prime minister has resigned, over the affair.

Thousands of South Koreans marched in Seoul for the second straight day on Saturday to protest against government labour policies and the handling of a ferry disaster that killed more than 300 people a year ago.

The protesters marched towards Gwanghwamun Square, where the altar for the victims of the ferry disaster is located and they laid flowers on it.

The demonstrators also criticised the South Korean president for her reluctance to accept a more thorough investigation into the sinking.

Although the government has recently announced its plan to salvage the ferry, the family members expressed their doubt because they believe the government has been delaying the salvage process.

The Sewol Ferry Incident took place in April 2014. The ferry was en route to Jeju Island, and it was carrying 476 passengers.

A total of 304 people among 476 passengers died when the ferry sank. 250 of them were students from Danwon High School in Ansan, who were on their way to their first field trip as high school students.

South Korea and China agreed to strengthen their diplomatic ties for the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and northeast Asia on Thursday.

The agreement was made during a summit held in Seoul on the first day of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to South Korea.

Foreign ministers from both countries also signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at building diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.

During the meeting which preceded the signing, Xi offered his condolences on the Sewol ferry disaster which killed more than 300 people in April.

US President Barack Obama arrived in South Korea on Friday on the second leg of his four-country Asian tour.

After touching down at a US airbase in Seoul, he attended a naturalisation ceremony for 20 military service members and their spouses from 14 countries.

"If there's anything this should teach us, it is that America is strengthened by our immigrants," Obama said.

He also visited the National War Memorial and laid a wreath in honour of victims of the Korean War and visited Gyeongbok Palace, an ancient royal palace in the capital.

The president's trip comes at a sensitive point in the recovery mission of a recent ferry disaster, however White House officials said his schedule would remain unchanged.

South Korea's central bank lowered its key interest rate to a record low on Wednesday in a further attempt to bolster the country's fragile economic recovery.

The Bank of Korea trimmed the key rate by a quarter of a percentage point to two percent for October.

It was the second rate cut this year after the central bank lowered lending costs in August following the deadly ferry disaster, the shock of which dented retail sales and other spending.

The bank on Wednesday also downgraded its growth forecasts for South Korea's economy, Asia's fourth-largest.

It said the economy would likely expand 3.5 percent this year, not 3.8 percent it forecast three months earlier, citing slower-than-expected improvements in capital expenditure and consumer spending.

Next year, South Korea's economy is expected to grow 3.9 percent, instead of four percent.

Analysts expected the rate cut as South Korea's finance minister had said the economic recovery was fragile.

The weak yen and a slow recovery of capital spending were also expected to dent the recovery of the export-driven economy.

Policymakers also saw weak sentiment among economic players as a risk to the economy.

In February 2009, the bank lowered its policy interest rate to 2 percent in the wake of the global financial crisis.

STORYLINE

South Korea on Wednesday formally approved plans to salvage a ferry that sank last year in one of the country's deadliest disasters in decades that killed more than 300 people.

Raising the ferry is one of demands made by bereaved families, who hope that might help reveal details about the cause of the sinking and find bodies of the nine passengers still missing.

Some conservative critics have opposed raising the Sewol, a civilian ship, with taxpayers' money and are sceptical that salvaging it will provide new revelations and find the missing.

The bodies of 295 people have been recovered.

Most of the victims were high schools students who were on a trip to a southern resort island.

Park's government had faced criticism from relatives of the victims and their supporters, who say officials were reluctant to start work to lift the ship due to expected high costs.

On Wednesday relatives again criticised the government for taking so long to agree for the salvage process to begin.

Salvaging the ship is estimated to cost between 91 and 137 million US dollars and take as long as 18 months, according to the oceans ministry.

STORYLINE

Thousands of South Koreans gathered to try to set a new record for creating the largest candlelight image to commemorate the victims of the sunken ferry Sewol on Friday night.

The attempt came a day after the first anniversary of the incident, which killed over 300 people.

The initial target was to gather 4,160 people but the number eventually reached 4,475.

They stood in the shape of the sunken ferry, and demanded the South Korean government reveal the truth behind the incident, and salvage the sunken ferry to find nine passengers, who are still missing.

Jeon Myung-sun, the father of Jeon Chan-ho, one of the Danwon High School students who died in the incident, resolved to keep urging the South Korean government to punish the people responsible for the disaster.

Other participants also called on the government to do more.

The Sewol ferry sank on April of last year off the southwestern coast of South Korea.

It was en route to Jeju Island, carrying 476 passengers.

A total of 304 people died, including 250 students from Danwon High School in Ansan, who were on their way to their first field trip as high school students.

STORYLINE

Thousands of South Koreans expressed their anger at the government on the first anniversary of the Sewol ferry sinking late on Thursday.

Grief and frustration turned into anger when the relatives, friends and supporters tried to reach Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul to lay flowers on the altars for the 304 victims, most of whom were high school students.

However, police stopped them from marching further by blocking their paths with buses and police walls.

The protesters responded by kicking and throwing objects at the walls.

At a vigil in downtown Seoul, where relatives have protested for months, there were also calls for the recovery of nine of the victims, whose bodies still haven't been retrieved.

There's frustration among South Koreans who see their government as having failed to make meaningful improvements to safety standards and hold high-level officials accountable for a disaster blamed in part on incompetence and corruption.

Earlier in the day, relatives blocked the prime minister from attending a mourning event and cancelled another ceremony because of what they called government indifference to their plight.

Hours before travelling abroad, President Park Geun-hye visited a small port near the site of the sinking to offer condolences to bereaved relatives.

Most, however, refused to meet her to protest the government's response.

Park gave a speech anyway, announcing plans to salvage the ferry - a demand of the relatives.

A Japanese reporter who was acquitted by a Seoul court on Thursday of defaming South Korea's president said his acquittal was an "obvious" result, and that he hopes prosecutors will not appeal.

Tatsuya Kato, Seoul bureau chief of Japan's Sankei Shimbun newspaper, made the comments in a news conference following the verdict at Seoul Central District Court.

Prosecutors indicted Kato last year over an article that referred to rumours that President Park Geun-hye was absent for seven hours during a ferry disaster that killed more than 300 people, mostly teenagers.

Kato said his story on Park's whereabouts during the ferry disaster served the public interest.

He told journalists at Thursday's news conference that the indictment had "made me think about the meaning of a modern democratic society."

Rallying for the sixth straight weekend in what has become perhaps South Korea's biggest protest movement ever, hundreds of thousands of demonstrators in Seoul got the closest yet Saturday to the president they desperately want removed.

The demonstration came hours after lawmakers formally launched an attempt to impeach President Park Geun-hye and set up a floor vote for as early as next Friday. State prosecutors accuse Park of helping a close confidante extort money and favors from large companies and manipulate state affairs.

The scandal has sparked mass protests each Saturday in downtown Seoul.

In the latest demonstration, the protesters advanced to a narrow alley about 100 meters (yards) away from the presidential palace grounds, an area police didn't previously permit them to enter.

Police estimated the turnout at 320,000, making it the biggest anti-Park rally so far, though the crowd appeared to be much larger. Protest organizers estimated the crowd at 1.7 million.

Some of the demonstrators, led by the relatives of a 2014 ferry disaster that killed more than 300 people, mostly teenagers on a school trip, jammed the alley near the presidential office, shouting for hours to demand Park's arrest, not just her resignation.

Thousands also rallied near the National Assembly to pressure political parties, including Park's conservative ruling party, to vote for her impeachment next week.

Opposition parties controlling South Korea's parliament had earlier planned to call for a vote this past week, but were thrown off after Park made a conditional offer Tuesday to leave office, which left them squabbling over timing.

Park said Tuesday that she would leave office if parliament comes up with a stable power transfer plan, though she didn't provide a timeline.

Opposition lawmakers criticized the overture, saying it was a stalling ploy aimed at luring back members of her party who supported impeachment.

Thousands of people gathered in the South Korean capital on Saturday to protest against a wave of policies recently implemented by the government.

Nearly 13-thousand protesters, led by one of South Korea's biggest labour unions, the KCTU (Korean Confederation of Trade Unions), demanded the resignation of South Korean President Park Geun-hye.

They were protesting against recent labour reforms and the closure of an industrial complex which it operated with North Korea. Seoul's decision to shut down the factory park was in response to Pyongyang's recent nuclear test and long-range rocket launch.

Protesters also expressed their dismay with the deployment of an advanced US missile defence system. The Terminal High Altitude Area Defence system (THAAD) is designed to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles high within the Earth's atmosphere or just above the atmosphere in the final moments before it strikes its target.

South Korea's National Assembly on Thursday held a hearing to question key figures involved in one of the country's worst political scandals that has led to public outrage and President Park Geun-hye's impeachment.

The fifth round of inquiries mainly focused on questioning Woo Byung-woo, the former senior presidential secretary for civil affairs, who is suspected of having had a close relationship to Choi Soon-sil, Park's 40-year friend and the woman at the centre of the influence-peddling scandal.

In the hearing, Woo denied his relationship to Choi.

Woo was initially summoned to the second hearing but did not show up.

Cho Yeo-ok, a nurse officer, faced questions about Park's whereabouts on the day of the sinking of the Sewol ferry in 2014.

Cho denied accusations she administered cosmetic procedures to Park that day.

STORYLINE

Thousands took part in anti-government protests in cities across South Korea on Friday denouncing the labour policies of an increasingly unpopular President Park Geun-hye.

The rallies were orchestrated by the country's largest umbrella labour union.

They come about a week after police clashed violently in the capital Seoul with demonstrators denouncing the government's handling of a ferry disaster that killed more than 300 people a year ago.

A spokesman from the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions said demonstrators were demanding an end to the country's temporary worker problem, and an increase in the minimum wage.

Labour organisations are critical of policies they say will reduce wages and job security as well as being unhappy with a revised pension system for government employees and the economic dominance of family-owned conglomerates known as chaebol.

Organisers said the rally of 10,000 people in Seoul was held without significant conflict with police.

However, sporadic clashes were reported in other cities.

Another large rally is planned in Seoul on Saturday when unionised workers plan to join groups supporting the families of the ferry disaster victims.
