LEADIN

One of the last Palestinian farming villages that still uses irrigation systems from Roman times says its ancient way of life is in danger as Israel prepares to lay down its West Bank separation barrier.

STORYLINE:

Children bathing in the reservoir near the village of Battir in the West Bank. It's part of an elaborate ancient irrigation system that serves Battir's 6,000 inhabitants.

Terraces are a common Palestinian farming technique in the hilly West Bank terrain. But in Battir they stretch out over nearly 2000 hectares (800 acres), irrigated by a series of canals that direct spring water down the stepped hills.

This combination of centuries-old terraces and water engineering prompted the U.N.'s cultural agency, UNESCO, to award the village last year with a $15,000 prize for "Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes."

But plans to lay down a West Bank separation barrier are threatening the continued supply of water to some of the village farmers and dismantle the much-vaunted integrity of the terraces according to Giovanni Fontana-Antonelli, Programme Specialist for Culture at UNESCO's Ramallah office.

He says: "The wall as projected so far will interfere with these ancient irrigation system by cutting part of the irrigation network, and therefore a number of fields will not receive any more water with a consequence of abandon of those fields."

The villagers live in limestone-faced houses built into a hillside southwest of Jerusalem. On the lands around the homes, stone retaining walls have transformed scrubby hills into orderly steps of olive trees and vegetable gardens.

With construction possibly beginning in the coming weeks, the people of Battir hope a legal battle, backed by recent U.N. recognition of the village's agricultural practices, will help change Israel's mind.

Retired teacher Elayan Shami, 62, kneels in the soil planting the famous local eggplant, a mottled pink and white variety that ripens in July. Shami tends a small patch on a terrace where furrows divide the area into rectangles laid out like a maze to direct the spring water.

He says: "If we lost the lands, and we couldn't do anything, that will be a disaster for the people of Battir, especially for the water and plants. It will cut the lands from the people and make us dependent on Israeli and outside markets. This is something no farmer can accept."

Israel began building the barrier in 2002 in response to a wave of deadly suicide bombings carried out by Palestinians who had entered from the West Bank.

Set to stretch 815 kilometres (500 miles), it is about two-thirds complete, according to Shaul Arieli, a retired military officer who now advises the Supreme Court on the barrier.

Israelis say the structure is a main reason for the halt in suicide bombings in recent years. But Palestinians say it is a pretext for Israel to steal their land.

Nearly 10 percent of the West Bank, which the Palestinians claim for a future state, will lie on the "Israeli" side of the barrier when it is complete. For this reason, construction on several stretches of the barrier have been delayed due to legal challenges.

Josh Hantman, a spokesperson for the Israeli Defence Ministry says: "Let us record that before waves of Palestinian terror took the lives of over 1000 Israeli, there was no barrier, this security fence is there purely to save lives and every inch of the security fence is open to judicial review."

Battir presents a particular challenge because the village's homes are in the West Bank while the fields are partially in Israel. This anomaly was enshrined in the 1949 cease-fire that ended Israel's war of independence.

According to current plans, the barrier will run close to the 1949 boundary and leave 160 acres (64 hectares) of village lands on the Israeli side, according to the Israeli Defence Ministry.

Village council head Akram Bader says the fence also loops into the West Bank and so will actually leave 740 acres on the Israeli side of the fence. This amounts to a third of the village land. Bader, an architect, used Google Earth and land confiscation orders to calculate the higher figure. He says the Defence Ministry estimate fails to account for the West Bank land that will be gobbled up.

In 2007, Battir sued the state and Ministry of Defence, demanding it change the route of the fence to protect the unique farming area.

In the legal documents, Israel claimed Battir is a tempting area for Palestinian attackers to penetrate into Israel. The state also insisted on keeping control of a rail line that runs from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, built before Israel's independence on Battir's lands.

This makes it impossible to consider Battir's request to move the route of the barrier to run only in Israeli territory and leave the village lands intact.

A Defence Ministry official said the barrier's planners have met with Battir's residents. He said the barrier will not disrupt farming because a planned access gate will be open to Battir's farmers three times a day. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of ongoing legal proceedings.

The official said that in 2008, two Battir residents were found guilty of sabotaging the railway.

Battir residents say only one local was found guilty, and was released within months. Moreover, they say this attack was a lone exception to the norm in which trains travel by unimpeded every half hour.

In court, military officials have acknowledged "the security threat is not reflected in Battir's residents in general, but rather from external hostile elements."

In Battir, council head Bader says the planned fence will rise a few feet from the walls of the only boys' school and slice across the soccer pitch. Besides that, the fence will likely devastate farming, Bader said. He said he loses sleep at night with worry.

Early this year, Battir suspended a challenge in Israel's Supreme Court, so a separate advisory commission on land expropriations could consider a request to instead reroute the barrier entirely on Israeli lands. The committee, part of the Finance Ministry, has not responded.

In the meantime, defence officials say they plan to begin construction in the coming weeks. Battir's lawyer, Ghiath Nasser, says the village will seek a court order to block any construction until the legal process is exhausted.

He says: "We submitted to the court all the evidence that can prove that the route of the wall in this area is illegal, totally illegal, there is a big damage to the environment. Battir is a very special area, a very nice area, it is a candidate to be a nominate for the UNESCO special areas of world heritage, we are also talking about the damage caused to the water system. So I think that the court will decide according to the legal principles, the international law, the route of the wall here should be cancelled."

Palestinians have had mixed results in past court challenges. Bilin, a village west of Ramallah, initially lost half its land to the barrier.

But in a 2007 decision, the high court ordered the Israeli government to move Bilin's barrier westward. It took three more years before the government moved the fence, showing the slow speed of the justice system.

Many other villages have failed to change the barrier's path, such as Battir's neighbour Walajeh, where Israel is currently surrounding the village with a wall and fence on all sides.

Based on a story by Egyptian-Canadian writer, Karim Alrawi, "Jihan's Smile" is one of the many shows on offer at this 10-day festival, that includes theatre performances by groups from Poland, Sweden and France.

Marina Barham is director of the festival and the Al-Harah theatre. She says that the idea is to the foster positive change through theatre and introduce this art to a new generation of Palestinians.

"Through our festival we want our voice to be heard all over the world and to say that Palestinian theatre is professional, that it's skilled and of high quality. We want to bring back joy to our children. Theatre and art are a way of resistance against the Israeli occupation", Barham says.

Palestinian actor, Nicola Zraineh, plays Jihan's increasingly worried father. The actor is one of the co-founders of Al-Harah theatre and has been working on stage since the year 2000.

With shows available mainly in the big cities, Palestinian actors bring theatre directly to people's homes, performing in villages as well as Palestinian refugee camps, Zraineh says.

In return, Palestinian politics, society and traditions offer constant inspiration for the local theatre. As Zraineh explains:

"We Palestinians have lots of stories to tell and perform on stage: stories related to politics, society, traditions and customs that we try to change in a positive way through theatre so as to bring a positive effect to children, youth and to the society in general."

Palestinian actors are not limited to the local scene but travel around the world to share their art, from Arab countries to Asia, Zraineh adds.

Palestinian theatre has been around since the beginning of the 20th century and has been asserting itself on the cultural scene ever since, says "Jihan's Smile" Director, Raeda Ghazaleh.

It was in the 80's that local theatre became more established, Ghazaleh says but laments that it's plagued by a lack of funds.

At a theatre in Bet Jalla, near Bethlehem, Swedish theatre group Ogonblicksteatern is performing in front of a special audience: children aged 6 months to 1 and a half years.

The Swedish play, "Here I Am" appeals to the youngest of audience members and deals with the babies' identities and sense of self.

The idea is that from the first months of their lives babies are capable of following a theatre play, says Johanna Salander, director of "Here I Am" and artistic director of the Ogonblicksteatern group.

This is the third time that Salander has visited the West Bank to work with Palestinian groups; the "Yalla Yalla" festival, she says, is an opportunity for both to learn something from each other.

Settlement clashes spread to Nablus

A demonstration against the expansion of a Jewish settlement in

the Israeli-occupied West Bank turned violent on Friday (30/12).

Up to 11 Palestinians, six soldiers and an Israeli peace activist

were injured during exchanges of tear gas and rocks. It was the

ninth day of protests over plans by the Jewish settlement of Efrat

to expand onto land claimed by the Palestinian village of

al-Khader. Police detained about 25 protesters, most of them

Israeli peace activists opposed to the construction of the

neighbourhood 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of Jerusalem. The

expansion threatens to disrupt negotiations between Israel and the

PLO, struggling to hammer out an agreement on Israeli withdrawal

Israeli troops on Friday used tear gas to disperse Palestinian protesters near the northern West Bank village of Kariut.

Waving Palestinian flags, the protesters had gathered on the 48th anniversary of the "Naksa," or setback, the term the Palestinians use for the defeat in the 1967 Arab-Israeli (Six-Day) war.

During that war, Israel conquered the Golan Heights from Syria, the West Bank and east Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Gaza Strip and Sinai peninsula from Egypt in just six days of fighting.

Israel returned Sinai to Egypt under a 1979 peace accord, and withdrew from Gaza in 2005.

A few hundred demonstrators also gathered in Susiya, a Palestinian village under the threat of demolition by Israel.

Susiya is one of more than a dozen "unrecognised" Palestinian herding communities in the southern West Bank, a desert-like area close to the Green Line, Israel's pre-1967 war frontier with the West Bank, when it was ruled by Jordan.

Its 160-odd residents live in shacks, caves and tents with cement-reinforced walls.

Israeli authorities say the structures are unlicensed.

Residents and their supporters say Israel refuses to grant permits as part of a plan to clear the area for future territorial claims, a charge Israel denies.

A group of rabbis have joined Palestinians in the West Bank to help replant olive trees uprooted by Jewish settlers.

They aim to show solidarity with Palestinians, as well as help rabbinical students to "learn the facts on the ground".

STORYLINE:

On a crisp morning, Rabbi Ian Chesir-Teran and dozens of rabbinical students from the US walk past the Biblical-looking landscapes of dust roads and olive groves to reach the area of South Hebron hills.

They join Palestinian villagers whose olive groves were uprooted by Jewish settlers living in the vicinity, and have come here to help them replant.

When Rabbi Ian Chesir-Teran crosses from Israel to the West Bank he takes off his kippah, a traditional skullcap worn by religious Jews, for fear of being targeted by fellow Jews.

Chesir-Teras is a rabbinic educator with T'ruah's, a US-based network of rabbis and Jewish communities committed to the protection of human rights in North America and Israel.

As the group walk to reach the olive groves, they pass by rocks with the Star of David spray-painted, a mark left by Jewish settlers.

But, Chesir-Teran is not discouraged. He says helping replant the trees is an attempt to show solidarity with the Palestinians and for the rabbinical students to "learn the facts on the ground".

"They've seen olive trees that have been uprooted by (Jewish) settlers. They've seen Hebrew graffiti sprawled on property, private property, belonging to Palestinians. And, so, we've come to show solidarity for our hosts by replanting trees that have been uprooted," he explains.

The villages of At-Tuwani and Ar-Rakkes are in the West Bank's part known as Area C, which remains under exclusive Israeli control and is home to dozens of Israeli settlements.

Israel places severe restrictions on Palestinian development there and home demolitions are not unusual.

In rare cases, Israel has also evicted Jewish settlers who have squatted illegally.

But settlers generally have a much easier time receiving building permits, and the government often retroactively legalises unauthorised outposts, looks the other way or offers compensation to uprooted settlers.

As part of interim peace deals in the 1990s, the West Bank was carved up into autonomous and semi-autonomous Palestinian areas, known as Areas A and B, and Area C, which is home to some 400,000 Israeli settlers.

The Palestinians claim all of the West Bank and say that Area C, home to an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 Palestinians, is crucial to the economic development of their future state.

26 year-old Tyler Dratch, a rabbinical student at Hebrew College in Boston, says human rights are essential to religious teachings and helping the most vulnerable is a duty of each person.

"Our hope is that we can integrate these stories and continue to have basically continue to allow Israel to be a part of our Jewish story, while also making sure that we're caring for the most vulnerable people as our neighbours and in our community," he says.

Musab Rabie, a Palestinian villager of At-Tuwani, welcomes the support.

"Of course, it feels a bit strange because we are attacked by the Jews themselves. In general, we look in a positive way to anyone that is trying to help," he says.

This gesture of replanting trees has been arranged by the organisation "T'ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights".

Hebron mosque massacre anniversary; Jewish taxi driver buried.

Palestinians in the West Bank town of Hebron observed a commercial

strike on Tuesday (14/2) to mark the first anniversary of the

massacre of 29 Palestinians by an Israeli settler in the Tomb of

the Patriarchs, an ancient mosque. Israeli security forces were on

high alert in Hebron and throughout the West Bank, Jerusalem and

Tel Aviv in anticipation of violence connected to the anniversary.

The attack on February 25, 1994, was the worst incident of

violence against Palestinians by a lone Israeli and set off a

sequence of suicide bombings across Israel in which some 60 people

have been killed. The anniversary was marked today according to

the Muslim calendar. In Jerusalem, where a Jewish taxi driver, who

was stabbed to death on Monday, was buried, Israeli Prime

Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, said his government was reluctant to lift

the closure of Gaza and the West Bank "until the Palestinian

Authority proves that it is committed to fighting terror". The

Authority responded by ordering a raid on the Khan Yunis district

of Gaza, where 200 kilogrammes of gunpowder and 25,000

Thousands of Fatah protesters and Al Aqsa Brigade gunmen paraded through the streets of Nablus on Saturday demonstrating against Israel''''s construction of a miles long separation wall.

They were also marching to highlight the deaths of Al Aqsa militants killed in actions against Israel in the last 3 years.

Heavy bursts of gunfire filled the skies above the northern West Bank town as a model of a Jewish settlement was set alight.

Protests against the barrier continued at Mesha near the encircled town of Qalqiliya where over a thousand protesters - both foreign and Palestinian - demonstrated in front of Israeli soldiers against the barrier that will cut through the West Bank town.

Militants from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine also gathered in Ramallah where they marched and protested against the barrier.

Also in Ramallah, former Gaza strongman Mohammed Dahlan met with Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia.

Arafat had met with his longtime nemesis Dahlan on Thursday in an effort to try to halt Palestinian violence in the Gaza Strip.

Gunmen loyal to Dahlan have clashed with Arafat''''s security forces in what Palestinian security sources called a power struggle, as Dahlan tries to expand his support base in the Strip ahead of a possible Israeli withdrawal.

Israel's separation wall in the West Bank is destroying Palestinian communities, according to activists.

A campaign group has compared the barrier to the Nakba, when Palestinians fled or were expelled from their homes.

STORYLINE:

Bir Nabala looks like a ghost town.

Vacant shops and deserted streets are the norm here.

The decline of this West Bank village has been caused by the Israeli-built separation wall.

It was completed in 2007 and has isolated Bir Nabala from Jerusalem, just eight kilometres away.

Before the barrier was erected, life was very different.

"This street in Bir Nabala called "Palestine Street" was very busy. In the past it took 10 minutes to cross this street from one side to another," says Tawfiq Nabali, head of Bir Nabala village council.

"Now the shops are closed and more than 3,000 people left the area of Bir Nabala," he says.

The Israeli authorities began construction on the wall in 2002 following a wave of violent attacks on its citizens.

Israel says the barrier is an essential security measure but critics say the barrier has been built outside the Green Line, taking control of land that belongs to Palestinians.

Jamal Juma, general coordinator of "Stop the Wall" campaign says it has led to "the isolation of Palestinians from their agriculture lands and from their natural resources in the West Bank".

"We are talking about 60 percent of the West Bank, including Jerusalem and the Jordan valley, is under Israeli control, so if we look to the wall from this angle we can say the wall is a continuation of the Nakba," he says.

In Al Ram, the towering concrete structure runs down the centre of a major road.

Juma says it has had a devastating financial impact on the community and claims Israel is using the barrier to appropriate Palestinian resources.

"The Palestinian tourism sector and the economic sector has been tremendously affected by the wall, and the Israeli full control of the the Palestinian natural resources," he says.

"For example, the latest Israeli control in Rantis area in the West Bank for the purpose of extracting gas from that area. There is simply nothing left for Palestinians to control," he adds.

The Stop the Wall campaign wants construction to stop and for the barrier to be torn down.

The group is calling for the return of lands confiscated in the wall's path and wants compensation for lost income and damage caused by the structure.

"This is a displacement project, ethnic cleansing and a real catastrophe," says Juma.

"It's displacement without force but killing the possibility of living in this area for the Palestinians and forcing them to leave there homeland," he says.

The wall will be around 500 miles (804 kilometres) long when complete.

Each kilometre costs around $2 million USD to build.

Scuffles broke out on Saturday (1/11) between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian protesters near the Jewish settlement of Ofra in the West Bank. About 300 Palestinians had arrived at the settlement, near
