One of the last Palestinian farming villages that still uses irrigation systems from Roman times says its ancient way of life is in danger as Israel prepares to lay down its West Bank separation barrier.

STORYLINE:

Children bathing in the reservoir near the village of Battir in the West Bank. It's part of an elaborate ancient irrigation system that serves Battir's 6,000 inhabitants.

Terraces are a common Palestinian farming technique in the hilly West Bank terrain. But in Battir they stretch out over nearly 2000 hectares (800 acres), irrigated by a series of canals that direct spring water down the stepped hills.

This combination of centuries-old terraces and water engineering prompted the U.N.'s cultural agency, UNESCO, to award the village last year with a $15,000 prize for "Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes."

But plans to lay down a West Bank separation barrier are threatening the continued supply of water to some of the village farmers and dismantle the much-vaunted integrity of the terraces according to Giovanni Fontana-Antonelli, Programme Specialist for Culture at UNESCO's Ramallah office.

He says: "The wall as projected so far will interfere with these ancient irrigation system by cutting part of the irrigation network, and therefore a number of fields will not receive any more water with a consequence of abandon of those fields."

The villagers live in limestone-faced houses built into a hillside southwest of Jerusalem. On the lands around the homes, stone retaining walls have transformed scrubby hills into orderly steps of olive trees and vegetable gardens.

With construction possibly beginning in the coming weeks, the people of Battir hope a legal battle, backed by recent U.N. recognition of the village's agricultural practices, will help change Israel's mind.

Retired teacher Elayan Shami, 62, kneels in the soil planting the famous local eggplant, a mottled pink and white variety that ripens in July. Shami tends a small patch on a terrace where furrows divide the area into rectangles laid out like a maze to direct the spring water.

He says: "If we lost the lands, and we couldn't do anything, that will be a disaster for the people of Battir, especially for the water and plants. It will cut the lands from the people and make us dependent on Israeli and outside markets. This is something no farmer can accept."

Israel began building the barrier in 2002 in response to a wave of deadly suicide bombings carried out by Palestinians who had entered from the West Bank.

Set to stretch 815 kilometres (500 miles), it is about two-thirds complete, according to Shaul Arieli, a retired military officer who now advises the Supreme Court on the barrier.

Israelis say the structure is a main reason for the halt in suicide bombings in recent years. But Palestinians say it is a pretext for Israel to steal their land.

Nearly 10 percent of the West Bank, which the Palestinians claim for a future state, will lie on the "Israeli" side of the barrier when it is complete. For this reason, construction on several stretches of the barrier have been delayed due to legal challenges.

Josh Hantman, a spokesperson for the Israeli Defence Ministry says: "Let us record that before waves of Palestinian terror took the lives of over 1000 Israeli, there was no barrier, this security fence is there purely to save lives and every inch of the security fence is open to judicial review."

Battir presents a particular challenge because the village's homes are in the West Bank while the fields are partially in Israel. This anomaly was enshrined in the 1949 cease-fire that ended Israel's war of independence.

According to current plans, the barrier will run close to the 1949 boundary and leave 160 acres (64 hectares) of village lands on the Israeli side, according to the Israeli Defence Ministry.

Village council head Akram Bader says the fence also loops into the West Bank and so will actually leave 740 acres on the Israeli side of the fence. This amounts to a third of the village land. Bader, an architect, used Google Earth and land confiscation orders to calculate the higher figure. He says the Defence Ministry estimate fails to account for the West Bank land that will be gobbled up.

In 2007, Battir sued the state and Ministry of Defence, demanding it change the route of the fence to protect the unique farming area.

In the legal documents, Israel claimed Battir is a tempting area for Palestinian attackers to penetrate into Israel. The state also insisted on keeping control of a rail line that runs from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, built before Israel's independence on Battir's lands.

This makes it impossible to consider Battir's request to move the route of the barrier to run only in Israeli territory and leave the village lands intact.

A Defence Ministry official said the barrier's planners have met with Battir's residents. He said the barrier will not disrupt farming because a planned access gate will be open to Battir's farmers three times a day. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of ongoing legal proceedings.

The official said that in 2008, two Battir residents were found guilty of sabotaging the railway.

Battir residents say only one local was found guilty, and was released within months. Moreover, they say this attack was a lone exception to the norm in which trains travel by unimpeded every half hour.

In court, military officials have acknowledged "the security threat is not reflected in Battir's residents in general, but rather from external hostile elements."

In Battir, council head Bader says the planned fence will rise a few feet from the walls of the only boys' school and slice across the soccer pitch. Besides that, the fence will likely devastate farming, Bader said. He said he loses sleep at night with worry.

Early this year, Battir suspended a challenge in Israel's Supreme Court, so a separate advisory commission on land expropriations could consider a request to instead reroute the barrier entirely on Israeli lands. The committee, part of the Finance Ministry, has not responded.

In the meantime, defence officials say they plan to begin construction in the coming weeks. Battir's lawyer, Ghiath Nasser, says the village will seek a court order to block any construction until the legal process is exhausted.

Palestinians have had mixed results in past court challenges. Bilin, a village west of Ramallah, initially lost half its land to the barrier.

But in a 2007 decision, the high court ordered the Israeli government to move Bilin's barrier westward. It took three more years before the government moved the fence, showing the slow speed of the justice system.

Many other villages have failed to change the barrier's path, such as Battir's neighbour Walajeh, where Israel is currently surrounding the village with a wall and fence on all sides.

Settlement clashes spread to Nablus

A demonstration against the expansion of a Jewish settlement in

the Israeli-occupied West Bank turned violent on Friday (30/12).

Up to 11 Palestinians, six soldiers and an Israeli peace activist

were injured during exchanges of tear gas and rocks. It was the

ninth day of protests over plans by the Jewish settlement of Efrat

to expand onto land claimed by the Palestinian village of

al-Khader. Police detained about 25 protesters, most of them

Israeli peace activists opposed to the construction of the

Hebron mosque massacre anniversary; Jewish taxi driver buried.

Palestinians in the West Bank town of Hebron observed a commercial

strike on Tuesday (14/2) to mark the first anniversary of the

massacre of 29 Palestinians by an Israeli settler in the Tomb of

the Patriarchs, an ancient mosque. Israeli security forces were on

high alert in Hebron and throughout the West Bank, Jerusalem and

Tel Aviv in anticipation of violence connected to the anniversary.

The attack on February 25, 1994, was the worst incident of

violence against Palestinians by a lone Israeli and set off a

sequence of suicide bombings across Israel in which some 60 people

have been killed. The anniversary was marked today according to

the Muslim calendar. In Jerusalem, where a Jewish taxi driver, who

was stabbed to death on Monday, was buried, Israeli Prime

Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, said his government was reluctant to lift

the closure of Gaza and the West Bank "until the Palestinian

Authority proves that it is committed to fighting terror". The

Authority responded by ordering a raid on the Khan Yunis district

PLO Chairman, Yasser Arafat, rejected on Friday (17/2) an Israeli

Tension over settlements erupts into violence.

Tension over the settlement issue between Israel and the

Palestinians erupted into violence on Saturday (28/1) when a group

of protestors burned down a caravan outside the Jewish settlement

of Maaleh Amos in the West Bank. The settlers responded by firing

at the protestors, but no one was hurt. The confrontation between

the two groups began at about 1200 (0900gmt) when around 100

Palestinian villagers and 30 Israeli peace activists arrived to

look at three mobile homes set up by settlers on three sites

around Maaleh Amos, in an effort to grab the land. A group of

Palestinians set the caravan on fire while the other protestors

walked uphill to the second mobile home. Israeli peace activist,

Uri Avnery, said the settlers then fired at the group with rifles

and submachine guns. The demonstrators threw themselves to the

ground until the firing stopped. The Israeli army said, although

the settlers fired, they shot bullets into the air and not at the

people. Three Palestinians were arrested on suspicion of burning

the trailer.

STORYLINE

Clashes broke out between Palestinian protesters and Israeli soldiers on Friday afternoon at the Qalandiya checkpoint that separates the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Around a hundred Palestinians threw stones at Israeli soldiers in the checkpoint who broke up the demonstration using tear gas.

Earlier in the day, about 400 Palestinians demonstrated in Ramallah in support of the Hamas movement that controls Gaza.

The demonstrators - many of whom waved Hamas flags - marched through the main streets of the West Bank city after Friday prayers.

Hamas rocket squads targeted Israel's self-declared capital Jerusalem for the first time on Friday, along with commercial hub Tel Aviv, showing off their expanded reach with what they said are Gaza-made projectiles being fired for the first time.

Israel called up 16,000 reservists on Friday, moving a step closer to a possible ground offensive in Gaza.

STORYLINE

Israeli troops in jeeps swooped down on the West Bank city of Nablus early Monday, shutting down a girls' school, a medical centre and two other facilities of a Hamas-affiliated charity, witnesses said.

Computers, documents cash and furniture were seized, witnesses said.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the Palestinian reports, but the raid appears to have been part of an intensified crackdown on Hamas in the West Bank by Israel and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Three weeks ago, Israel and Palestinian militants in Hamas-ruled Gaza agreed to a ceasefire.

Although the ceasefire is limited to Gaza, a deadly Israeli attack on Islamic Jihad cadres in the West Bank has already provoked Gaza militants to violate the agreement.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum in Gaza called the shut down of Hamas-affiliated charity "a moral crime", but made no mention of the period of calm.

Hamas wrested control of the Gaza Strip from Abbas' forces a year ago, and neither Israel nor Abbas want that takeover reprised in the West Bank.

In recent months, Israeli troops and Abbas' security forces have applied heavy pressure on West Bank charities, moneychangers, women's cooperatives, media outlets and schools with suspected ties to the militants.

Around 1 a.m. on Monday (1000 GMT on Sunday) dozens of military jeeps, two bulldozers and two trucks entered Nablus and headed for the facilities of the Solidarity charity, delivering an order to shut the facility for three years, witnesses said.

The chairman of the charity is Nablus Mayor Adli Yaish of Hamas.

He has been in an Israeli jail since the Israeli military rounded up Hamas politicians after the June 2006 capture of an Israeli soldier by Hamas-affiliated militants in Gaza.

The troops shut down Solidarity's headquarters, as well as an elementary school for 160 girls and a sports club.

The medical centre that was shuttered bears the same name as the charity, but is run by a different charitable organisation that was controlled by Hamas until its top administration was replaced last year by Abbas' government, according to the director of the medical centre.

Office equipment was smashed, and computers, documents and the equivalent of about six thousand US dollars in Israeli and Jordanian currency was seized, according to the director who said the centre is not connected to Hamas.

Troops also raided Nablus offices of the Palestinian Authority's ministry of religious affairs.

Israel is trying to negotiate a peace deal with the Palestinian Authority, and it was not clear why the ministry was targeted.

Clashes broke out in the West Bank town of Jenin on Tuesday as the Israeli army tried to impose a curfew on the

Palestinian town.

Stone throwing youths hurled rocks at tanks and soldiers, who responded with tear gas and gun fire as Israeli and Palestinian leaders moved toward talks on a new Mideast peace plan.

The wave of violence came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon declared that Israel's occupation in the West Bank must end, stunning both dovish opponents and hardline allies.

Sharon indicated a 180-degree turnaround after decades of warning that an Israeli withdrawal from even small parts of the West Bank could endanger Israel's existence.

Sceptics, however, said it was yet another master performance from a wily politician who expected his newfound pliability would never be put to the test.

A summit between Sharon and his Palestinian counterpart, Mahmoud Abbas, is planned for later this week and a three-way summit with United States President George W. Bush could take place as early as next week, possibly in Jordan.

Violence also flared elsewhere in the West Bank.

Israeli soldiers shot and killed a 16-year-old Palestinian boy and wounded a 7-year-old boy after opening fire at stone throwers in the Tulkarem refugee camp, Palestinian hospital officials said. The army said troops fired, and hit a boy, after a Palestinian youth threw a molotov cocktail.

In a village near the city of Nablus, Israeli troops opened fire on youths throwing stones, hitting a 9-year-old Palestinian boy in the head and critically wounding him, and hitting two 12-year-old boys in the legs, lightly wounding them, Palestinian hospital officials said.

A 10-year-old boy was struck in the leg by a rubber bullet, but was not seriously hurt, the officials said. The army did not immediately comment.

Five Palestinian children, a Palestinian woman and a police officer, were also injured on Tuesday after accidentally detonating explosives in the West Bank city of Hebron, Palestinian security officials said. The children found the

explosives in two plastic bags under a tree and accidentally detonated the first bag. After a police officer arrived, the second bag exploded, seriously injuring him, the officials said.

Hundred of Palestinians took to the streets of Yamun village, near the West Bank town of Jenin to participate in the funeral of an alleged Islamic Jihad militant killed in an Israeli raid early on Tuesday.

Israeli troops killed the alleged militant, whom they were seeking in the West Bank, the military said.

The military said troops attempted to arrest Jihad Nawhda early on Tuesday and opened fire when he tried to escape.

He was planning to carry out an imminent attack and had been wanted for a year, it said.

Palestinian witnesses said Nawhda, 23, was leaving an internet cafe near the town of Jenin when the Israeli troops arrived.

The Israel Defence Forces said the soldiers took the wounded militant in their car in order to bring him to an Israeli hospital but said he died of his wounds on the way. His body was then taken to the Jenin morgue.

In response to the killing, Islamic Jihad fired three rockets into southern Israel from the Gaza strip. No one was wounded.

In response to the fire, Israel ordered its border crossings with Gaza sealed.

Gaza border officials said the crossings were supposed to open on Tuesday to allow in humanitarian supplies but that Israel had notified him they would remain closed.

A shaky ceasefire between Israel and Gaza militants has allowed a trickle of supplies through the border crossings since June.

But Israel has largely kept the crossings closed since early November after it launched air strikes and a ground raid killing 6 Hamas gunmen.

The Israeli army claimed at the time that it had uncovered a tunnel intended for immediate use to abduct Israeli soldiers into the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian militants have since fired numerous rockets and mortar shells at Israel and the Israeli army has carried out further airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza.

The ceasefire is set to expire on Friday.

Israel has said it wants to extend the arrangement, but Islamic Jihad threatened not to renew the cease-fire if Israel targeted its members in the West Bank.

Abu Mojahed an Islamic Jihad spokesman, said the truce would be no longer valid and said "the Islamic Jihad movement are calling an end for the truce."

Following his comments Nafez Azam, the leader of Islamic Jihad, said the Israeli raid was a "message" from Israel showing that "its aggression continues and it is the right of our people to defend itself."

Israel often carries out overnight arrest raids in the West Bank targeting Palestinian militants.

Israel is holding peace talks with the moderate Palestinian government in the West Bank led by President Mahmoud Abbas, but says Abbas' security forces are not yet capable of taking control.

Hundreds of Israeli police wearing riot gear began early on Wednesday forcibly removing more than 300 settlers from the Homesh settlement in the northern West Bank, whose Israeli occupants were evicted by their government in its 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and part of the West Bank.

Police and soldiers had on Monday allowed an estimated 2,500 demonstrators to march to the ruins of the tiny hilltop settlement.

About 350 remained on Wednesday, having camped out as they tried to reconstruct buildings, and the government said it would not allow them to try to resettle.

"This is (an) insane thing that was done (the 2005 evictions) and we're coming to fix it and we're determined to fix it and we'll have to come once, twice, three times, ten times until we fix this mistake," one settler, the extreme right-wing activist, Baruch Marzel told AP Television.

A few minutes after the deadline police had given the squatters to leave the site, police began physically removing some settlers who refused to move.

Some were picked up and carried off the site by police.

One boy who was dragged to a waiting bus shouted abuse at police.

"Nazis! Hitler is proud of you! Yes, you are a Nazi," the boy said.

The march on Homesh was the first large-scale attempt by settlers and their backers to reoccupy one of the sites, though small groups have briefly infiltrated nearby Sanur.

Homesh, a hilltop village of 80 people in the northern West Bank, was reduced to rubble by Israeli bulldozers soon after its residents were removed.

Orthodox Jews see the West Bank as part of the land promised to Jews in the Bible and believe Israel's government has no right to give up any of it.

Homesh was one of four West Bank settlements from which occupants were evicted in September 2005, as part of the Israeli government's "disengagement" that included removing Israel's 21 settlements from the Gaza Strip and leaving that seaside territory.

However, in the past 18 months Israel has repeatedly sent its forces into the sovereign territory, causing widespread destruction, particularly in the northern gaza, and carried out airstrikes on both suspected militants and the civilian population.

Israel says its Gaza operations are aimed at bringing an end to rocket attacks by Palestinian militant groups.

The Israeli military forces also remain in control of the vast swathes of the occupied West Bank.

The army and police completed the process in three weeks, in a large-scale military operation with thousands of troops.

The barrier's first section - about 150 kilometres (90 miles) - was finished in June.

A Palestinian gunman was killed in an exchange of fire with Israeli troops during a raid in the West Bank town of Qalqiliya early on Thursday, the Israeli army and Palestinian security officials said.

Israel regularly carries out overnight arrests raids against militants in the West Bank.

An Israeli army spokesman confirmed troops who were on an arrest operation shot and hit an armed man who was nearing the troops.

Palestinian security officials said the man was a member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent offshoot of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement.

As his body was taken to hospital, his relatives broke down in tears.

Palestinian gunmen ambushed an Israeli army patrol in the West Bank on Sunday, killing three soldiers according to Israeli security sources and rescue services, the most serious attack in the area in months.

The deadly attack came a few hours after Palestinians in Gaza fired rockets at Israeli towns, and Israeli forces wound up a phase of a wide-ranging operation in a Palestinian refugee camp on the Egyptian border.

Security sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Palestinians ambushed an Israeli army foot patrol in the Palestinian village of Ein Yabrud, east of the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Three soldiers were killed and another was seriously wounded, they said.

The area has been the scene of frequent Palestinian gunfire attacks against Israeli military and civilian vehicles.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Israel Radio reported that soldiers imposed a curfew on Ein Yabrud and was searching for the attackers, who escaped.

The last serious attack if its kind in the area was in February last year, when four Palestinian gunmen opened fire on an Israeli military checkpoint at nearby Ein Arik, killing six soldiers before escaping.
