LEADIN

One of the last Palestinian farming villages that still uses irrigation systems from Roman times says its ancient way of life is in danger as Israel prepares to lay down its West Bank separation barrier.

STORYLINE:

Terraces are a common Palestinian farming technique in the hilly West Bank terrain. But in Battir they stretch out over nearly 2000 hectares (800 acres), irrigated by a series of canals that direct spring water down the stepped hills.

This combination of centuries-old terraces and water engineering prompted the U.N.'s cultural agency, UNESCO, to award the village last year with a $15,000 prize for "Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes."

But plans to lay down a West Bank separation barrier are threatening the continued supply of water to some of the village farmers and dismantle the much-vaunted integrity of the terraces according to Giovanni Fontana-Antonelli, Programme Specialist for Culture at UNESCO's Ramallah office.

He says: "The wall as projected so far will interfere with these ancient irrigation system by cutting part of the irrigation network, and therefore a number of fields will not receive any more water with a consequence of abandon of those fields."

The villagers live in limestone-faced houses built into a hillside southwest of Jerusalem. On the lands around the homes, stone retaining walls have transformed scrubby hills into orderly steps of olive trees and vegetable gardens.

With construction possibly beginning in the coming weeks, the people of Battir hope a legal battle, backed by recent U.N. recognition of the village's agricultural practices, will help change Israel's mind.

Retired teacher Elayan Shami, 62, kneels in the soil planting the famous local eggplant, a mottled pink and white variety that ripens in July. Shami tends a small patch on a terrace where furrows divide the area into rectangles laid out like a maze to direct the spring water.

He says: "If we lost the lands, and we couldn't do anything, that will be a disaster for the people of Battir, especially for the water and plants. It will cut the lands from the people and make us dependent on Israeli and outside markets. This is something no farmer can accept."

Israel began building the barrier in 2002 in response to a wave of deadly suicide bombings carried out by Palestinians who had entered from the West Bank.

Set to stretch 815 kilometres (500 miles), it is about two-thirds complete, according to Shaul Arieli, a retired military officer who now advises the Supreme Court on the barrier.

Israelis say the structure is a main reason for the halt in suicide bombings in recent years. But Palestinians say it is a pretext for Israel to steal their land.

Nearly 10 percent of the West Bank, which the Palestinians claim for a future state, will lie on the "Israeli" side of the barrier when it is complete. For this reason, construction on several stretches of the barrier have been delayed due to legal challenges.

Josh Hantman, a spokesperson for the Israeli Defence Ministry says: "Let us record that before waves of Palestinian terror took the lives of over 1000 Israeli, there was no barrier, this security fence is there purely to save lives and every inch of the security fence is open to judicial review."

Battir presents a particular challenge because the village's homes are in the West Bank while the fields are partially in Israel. This anomaly was enshrined in the 1949 cease-fire that ended Israel's war of independence.

According to current plans, the barrier will run close to the 1949 boundary and leave 160 acres (64 hectares) of village lands on the Israeli side, according to the Israeli Defence Ministry.

Village council head Akram Bader says the fence also loops into the West Bank and so will actually leave 740 acres on the Israeli side of the fence. This amounts to a third of the village land. Bader, an architect, used Google Earth and land confiscation orders to calculate the higher figure. He says the Defence Ministry estimate fails to account for the West Bank land that will be gobbled up.

In 2007, Battir sued the state and Ministry of Defence, demanding it change the route of the fence to protect the unique farming area.

In the legal documents, Israel claimed Battir is a tempting area for Palestinian attackers to penetrate into Israel. The state also insisted on keeping control of a rail line that runs from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, built before Israel's independence on Battir's lands.

This makes it impossible to consider Battir's request to move the route of the barrier to run only in Israeli territory and leave the village lands intact.

A Defence Ministry official said the barrier's planners have met with Battir's residents. He said the barrier will not disrupt farming because a planned access gate will be open to Battir's farmers three times a day. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of ongoing legal proceedings.

The official said that in 2008, two Battir residents were found guilty of sabotaging the railway.

Battir residents say only one local was found guilty, and was released within months. Moreover, they say this attack was a lone exception to the norm in which trains travel by unimpeded every half hour.

In court, military officials have acknowledged "the security threat is not reflected in Battir's residents in general, but rather from external hostile elements."

In Battir, council head Bader says the planned fence will rise a few feet from the walls of the only boys' school and slice across the soccer pitch. Besides that, the fence will likely devastate farming, Bader said. He said he loses sleep at night with worry.

Early this year, Battir suspended a challenge in Israel's Supreme Court, so a separate advisory commission on land expropriations could consider a request to instead reroute the barrier entirely on Israeli lands. The committee, part of the Finance Ministry, has not responded.

In the meantime, defence officials say they plan to begin construction in the coming weeks. Battir's lawyer, Ghiath Nasser, says the village will seek a court order to block any construction until the legal process is exhausted.

Palestinians have had mixed results in past court challenges. Bilin, a village west of Ramallah, initially lost half its land to the barrier.

But in a 2007 decision, the high court ordered the Israeli government to move Bilin's barrier westward. It took three more years before the government moved the fence, showing the slow speed of the justice system.

Many other villages have failed to change the barrier's path, such as Battir's neighbour Walajeh, where Israel is currently surrounding the village with a wall and fence on all sides.

Settlement clashes spread to Nablus

A demonstration against the expansion of a Jewish settlement in

the Israeli-occupied West Bank turned violent on Friday (30/12).

Up to 11 Palestinians, six soldiers and an Israeli peace activist

were injured during exchanges of tear gas and rocks. It was the

ninth day of protests over plans by the Jewish settlement of Efrat

to expand onto land claimed by the Palestinian village of

al-Khader. Police detained about 25 protesters, most of them

Israeli peace activists opposed to the construction of the

neighbourhood 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of Jerusalem. The

expansion threatens to disrupt negotiations between Israel and the

PLO, struggling to hammer out an agreement on Israeli withdrawal

A group of rabbis have joined Palestinians in the West Bank to help replant olive trees uprooted by Jewish settlers.

They aim to show solidarity with Palestinians, as well as help rabbinical students to "learn the facts on the ground".

STORYLINE:

On a crisp morning, Rabbi Ian Chesir-Teran and dozens of rabbinical students from the US walk past the Biblical-looking landscapes of dust roads and olive groves to reach the area of South Hebron hills.

They join Palestinian villagers whose olive groves were uprooted by Jewish settlers living in the vicinity, and have come here to help them replant.

When Rabbi Ian Chesir-Teran crosses from Israel to the West Bank he takes off his kippah, a traditional skullcap worn by religious Jews, for fear of being targeted by fellow Jews.

Chesir-Teras is a rabbinic educator with T'ruah's, a US-based network of rabbis and Jewish communities committed to the protection of human rights in North America and Israel.

As the group walk to reach the olive groves, they pass by rocks with the Star of David spray-painted, a mark left by Jewish settlers.

But, Chesir-Teran is not discouraged. He says helping replant the trees is an attempt to show solidarity with the Palestinians and for the rabbinical students to "learn the facts on the ground".

"They've seen olive trees that have been uprooted by (Jewish) settlers. They've seen Hebrew graffiti sprawled on property, private property, belonging to Palestinians. And, so, we've come to show solidarity for our hosts by replanting trees that have been uprooted," he explains.

The villages of At-Tuwani and Ar-Rakkes are in the West Bank's part known as Area C, which remains under exclusive Israeli control and is home to dozens of Israeli settlements.

Israel places severe restrictions on Palestinian development there and home demolitions are not unusual.

In rare cases, Israel has also evicted Jewish settlers who have squatted illegally.

But settlers generally have a much easier time receiving building permits, and the government often retroactively legalises unauthorised outposts, looks the other way or offers compensation to uprooted settlers.

As part of interim peace deals in the 1990s, the West Bank was carved up into autonomous and semi-autonomous Palestinian areas, known as Areas A and B, and Area C, which is home to some 400,000 Israeli settlers.

The Palestinians claim all of the West Bank and say that Area C, home to an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 Palestinians, is crucial to the economic development of their future state.

26 year-old Tyler Dratch, a rabbinical student at Hebrew College in Boston, says human rights are essential to religious teachings and helping the most vulnerable is a duty of each person.

"Our hope is that we can integrate these stories and continue to have basically continue to allow Israel to be a part of our Jewish story, while also making sure that we're caring for the most vulnerable people as our neighbours and in our community," he says.

Musab Rabie, a Palestinian villager of At-Tuwani, welcomes the support.

"Of course, it feels a bit strange because we are attacked by the Jews themselves. In general, we look in a positive way to anyone that is trying to help," he says.

This gesture of replanting trees has been arranged by the organisation "T'ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights".

Arafat rejects Jenin terms; youths confront troops.

PLO Chairman, Yasser Arafat, rejected on Friday (17/2) an Israeli

At least 40 people are at risk of losing their homes in the West Bank village of Susya after the Israeli High Court approved a motion submitted by the Israeli army to demolish seven structures in the village.

Meanwhile, an Israeli opposition MK warns that the Israeli government is moving to annex large parts of the occupied West Bank.

STORYLINE:

They may be simple structures, but some of the poorest residents of the West Bank call them home.

Seven of these structures are at risk of demolition by the Israeli army.

This is the village of Susya. A rural village at the southernmost tip of the West Bank that is constantly in conflict with the Israeli government and the Israeli settlements.

"There is a decision from an Israeli high court to demolish seven structures in the village and we are expecting the Israeli bulldozers to come at any minute and destroy these structures," says resident Naser Nawaja.

Last year, Israel's State Attorney rejected a petition submitted by residents of the village on a proposed community development plan. Instead, it notified the residents of the Israeli state's intention to demolish 19 structures, which is approximately one-fifth of the total number of buildings in the village. The residents took legal action and petitioned the High Court.

In a shock decision to the community, the Israeli High Court rejected part of the petition and approved the state's motion to demolish seven of the structures, including homes, a storage and a water tank.

On Sunday, Joint List MKs visited the beleaguered village.

"I came to Susya this small Palestinian village here to support the villagers in their struggle to stay here to stay and to keep their places to stay on their land and to fight against the plans of the Israeli government and Israeli settlers to deport them and to demolish their houses," says Dov Khenin, Israeli MK.

The small community relies on agriculture and livestock for sustenance. If the demolitions are indeed carried out it would leave dozens without shelter in the winter season. Residents say this is private Palestinian land.

"Since 1986 the Israeli state has been trying to demolish the village and to expel its residents in order to expand the Jewish settlement of Susya at the expense of the agricultural land belonging to the people of Susya."

Surrounding Susya, many Israeli settlements can easily be seen, including one with the same name.

This one to the south-east is the Karmel settlement.

"They are fighting against a political move by the Israeli government that is part of a big plan to actually annex parts, big parts, of the West Bank, the occupied West Bank," says Khenin.

Lawyers defending the village of Susya say "20 additional structures are slated for destruction following the state's unilateral notification. The fate of the entire village depends on, and still awaits, the court's declaration regarding a petition submitted on the matter."

According to the defence, the village "has been located in the South Hebron Hills at least since the 1830s."

In the early 1980s, the Israeli Civil Administration declared the village's land an 'archaeological site,' and in 1986 its residents were expelled from the declared archaeological site. Following the expulsion, the residents moved to a nearby location.

Settlements are considered illegal under international law.

Hundred of Palestinians took to the streets of Yamun village, near the West Bank town of Jenin to participate in the funeral of an alleged Islamic Jihad militant killed in an Israeli raid early on Tuesday.

Israeli troops killed the alleged militant, whom they were seeking in the West Bank, the military said.

The military said troops attempted to arrest Jihad Nawhda early on Tuesday and opened fire when he tried to escape.

He was planning to carry out an imminent attack and had been wanted for a year, it said.

Palestinian witnesses said Nawhda, 23, was leaving an internet cafe near the town of Jenin when the Israeli troops arrived.

The Israel Defence Forces said the soldiers took the wounded militant in their car in order to bring him to an Israeli hospital but said he died of his wounds on the way. His body was then taken to the Jenin morgue.

In response to the killing, Islamic Jihad fired three rockets into southern Israel from the Gaza strip. No one was wounded.

In response to the fire, Israel ordered its border crossings with Gaza sealed.

Gaza border officials said the crossings were supposed to open on Tuesday to allow in humanitarian supplies but that Israel had notified him they would remain closed.

A shaky ceasefire between Israel and Gaza militants has allowed a trickle of supplies through the border crossings since June.

But Israel has largely kept the crossings closed since early November after it launched air strikes and a ground raid killing 6 Hamas gunmen.

The Israeli army claimed at the time that it had uncovered a tunnel intended for immediate use to abduct Israeli soldiers into the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian militants have since fired numerous rockets and mortar shells at Israel and the Israeli army has carried out further airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza.

The ceasefire is set to expire on Friday.

Israel has said it wants to extend the arrangement, but Islamic Jihad threatened not to renew the cease-fire if Israel targeted its members in the West Bank.

Abu Mojahed an Islamic Jihad spokesman, said the truce would be no longer valid and said "the Islamic Jihad movement are calling an end for the truce."

Following his comments Nafez Azam, the leader of Islamic Jihad, said the Israeli raid was a "message" from Israel showing that "its aggression continues and it is the right of our people to defend itself."

Israel often carries out overnight arrest raids in the West Bank targeting Palestinian militants.

Israel is holding peace talks with the moderate Palestinian government in the West Bank led by President Mahmoud Abbas, but says Abbas' security forces are not yet capable of taking control.

Hundreds of Israeli police wearing riot gear began early on Wednesday forcibly removing more than 300 settlers from the Homesh settlement in the northern West Bank, whose Israeli occupants were evicted by their government in its 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and part of the West Bank.

Police and soldiers had on Monday allowed an estimated 2,500 demonstrators to march to the ruins of the tiny hilltop settlement.

About 350 remained on Wednesday, having camped out as they tried to reconstruct buildings, and the government said it would not allow them to try to resettle.

"This is (an) insane thing that was done (the 2005 evictions) and we're coming to fix it and we're determined to fix it and we'll have to come once, twice, three times, ten times until we fix this mistake," one settler, the extreme right-wing activist, Baruch Marzel told AP Television.

A few minutes after the deadline police had given the squatters to leave the site, police began physically removing some settlers who refused to move.

Some were picked up and carried off the site by police.

One boy who was dragged to a waiting bus shouted abuse at police.

"Nazis! Hitler is proud of you! Yes, you are a Nazi," the boy said.

The march on Homesh was the first large-scale attempt by settlers and their backers to reoccupy one of the sites, though small groups have briefly infiltrated nearby Sanur.

Homesh, a hilltop village of 80 people in the northern West Bank, was reduced to rubble by Israeli bulldozers soon after its residents were removed.

Orthodox Jews see the West Bank as part of the land promised to Jews in the Bible and believe Israel's government has no right to give up any of it.

Homesh was one of four West Bank settlements from which occupants were evicted in September 2005, as part of the Israeli government's "disengagement" that included removing Israel's 21 settlements from the Gaza Strip and leaving that seaside territory.

However, in the past 18 months Israel has repeatedly sent its forces into the sovereign territory, causing widespread destruction, particularly in the northern gaza, and carried out airstrikes on both suspected militants and the civilian population.

Israel says its Gaza operations are aimed at bringing an end to rocket attacks by Palestinian militant groups.

The Israeli military forces also remain in control of the vast swathes of the occupied West Bank.

The army and police completed the process in three weeks, in a large-scale military operation with thousands of troops.

Once a regular sight across the Levant, the region's traditional handmade tiles are scarcely produced nowadays.

But one West Bank factory is keeping the tradition alive.

STORY-LINE:

Intricate and handmade, these tiles are becoming a relic of history.

They used to be produced across the Levant, but today they newly made handmade tiles are a rare sight.

The craft has dwindled over the years, due to the shift towards machine-produced tiles, as well as changes in taste.

But this factory in the West Bank city of Nablus is lovingly continuing to preserve the craft.

"We are the only ones (who still work in this field) in Palestine, and even in the Middle East. Sometimes we get orders from Beirut, Jordan, and other foreign countries," says factory co-owner Anan Aslan.

He adds that Palestinians often find it difficult to export their products and sometimes have to do so through Israel.

While the origin of the craft is disputed, the tiles have been a mainstay of Palestinian and Levantine homes for more than a century.

This family-owned factory has been open since 1913 and the tiles it has produced have decorated the homes of the elite around the region.

The traditional process uses coloured pigment to stain the cement squares by filling unique metal templates. The tiles are sealed using a manual press and sand that soaks up any moisture left from the pigmentation liquid.

Jalal Aslan, Anan's father, says the factory has been in the family for generations.

"I learned tile making from my father," he says. "When my father was alive, he used to send me to Damascus and Beirut to get those templates that we draw with, and I learned there how they make them (the templates)."

"They don't exist anymore here in Nablus, and most of the people that used to make it died, so I continued the work."

Today, the tiles can be seen in fashionable restaurants in Israel looking for an oriental flair as well as elsewhere in the Middle East.

And while it is becoming increasingly rare to see these tiles in modern homes, the Aslan family is honoured to keep the tradition alive.

"We like this work because of the art in it, the heritage, the nobility of the past, that's why we love it a lot," explains Anan Aslan.

Palestinian protesters threw stones and petrol bombs, as they clashed with Israeli police on Monday in the West Bank.

Israeli police said dozens of protesters approached Israel's West Bank security barrier near the town of Abu Dis.

Police said the protesters apparently intended to damage the barrier.

The protesters were eventually dispersed, according to the police.

He was greeted at the Muqata, the Palestinian Authority's headquarters by Abbas' chief aide Saeb Erekat.

Security was tight, with helmeted riot police carrying truncheons and rifles lining the access road to the walled compound.

Obama, the Democratic Party's presumptive presidential candidate, was greeted at the steps by Erekat and the two went inside to meet Abbas.

Abbas wants Obama to take away one message from their meeting on Wednesday - if elected US president, he should focus immediately on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or any gains made in peace talks could vanish.

During a stop in Jordan on Tuesday, Obama had suggested that he was open to the Palestinians' request.

He said if elected he would do his best to bring Israelis and Palestinians together.

However, he also cautioned that it was unrealistic to expect that a US president alone could suddenly snap his fingers and bring about peace in this region.

The candidate's visit in the West Bank generated some goodwill here, particularly since his Republican rival, John McCain, did not visit the Palestinians in a Mideast trip earlier in the summer.

Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, has said Obama was not welcome and criticised Abbas, a bitter rival, for receiving him.

Israeli security forces fired tear gas and stun grenades on Friday at rock-throwing Palestinians protesting against land seizures in a Jewish settlement in West Bank.

The protesters say plans to build new houses in the nearby settlement stand on Palestinian land.

Local reports say at least two protesters were injured during the clashes in the village of Ras Karkar.

Earlier this week a Jerusalem District court ruled to legalize an isolated West Bank settlement outpost, celebrated by Israeli nationalists as a  "precedent-setting" court ruling.

LEADIN:

For Palestinians, the new mayor of Hebron is a hero who they hope will improve their city. But to Israelis, the new leader of the divided West Bank city is an unrepentant murderer.

STORYLINE:

Walking through the streets of Hebron as the newly elected mayor, Tayser Abu Sneineh says he is now committed to pursuing a peace agreement with Israel.

But the most contentious figure in the West Bank's most volatile city is showing no remorse for his role in an infamous 1980 attack.

Today he sports a short grey beard and a tie, but as a 26-year-old maths teacher he carried a gun and took part in an attack in Hebron on Israeli settlers returning home from Friday prayers. Six people were killed and 16 wounded in that attack on May 2, 1980.

Abu Sneineh was convicted as one of the gunmen and sentenced to life in prison. But he was released three years later in a prisoner swap between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation and deported to Algeria. He returned to the West Bank, along with other exiled PLO figures, after the Oslo interim peace agreement was signed in 1993.

Abu Sneineh says the attack was justified.

For Palestinians, he is a popular figure.

Local barber Mohammed Jabir is delighted to see him approach, and kisses him.

"We hope he solves the issues in the city, hopefully he will do everything we want," he says.

Now 63, Abu Sneineh says he has put his life as a militant behind him and is focused on the tough reality of governing in a divided city. But his attitude towards the settlers has not changed in principle.

"Those settlers are living in isolated ghettos, they are the ones who are imposing isolation on themselves, not us. They closed the area and they are living under the protection of the soldiers, and I think that this force doesn't create a right, they think they have the right, but they don't," he says.

Hebron is the West Bank's most populous city and a frequent flashpoint for violence between Israelis and Palestinians. Several hundred nationalist Israeli settlers live in fortified compounds in the midst of the city's 170,000 Palestinian inhabitants. Hebron has been the epicentre of many of the Palestinian attacks targeting Israeli civilians and security forces in the past year and a half.

Noam Arnon, a spokesman for the Jewish community of Hebron, called Abu Sneineh "a despicable and cowardly murderer" who killed civilians in their white Sabbath shirts. Arnon also believes that it was entirely counterproductive.

"This shameful, murderous action has achieved the opposite. They wanted to uproot the Jews from Hebron, to exile the Jews from Hebron, to frighten us and they achieved exactly the opposite," he says.

"You, Mr. Mayor, you've achieved the resettlement and the rebuilding of the Jewish community of Hebron."

Abu Sneineh shrugs off criticism, saying that many Israeli officials served in the military and were involved in the deaths of numerous Palestinians in decades of fighting.

"The operation was directed against the Israeli army and against the armed settlers who tamper with the security of the homeland and the citizens and kill people," he maintains.

Arnon conversely maintains that he killed innocent people, and if he were in the US he would likely be "executed".

Abu Sneineh lives in Hebron's Old City, an area under tight Israeli military control.

These days, Abu Sneineh says his priority is to improve municipal services for Palestinian residents, including water, electricity and roads. Most of these services are controlled by Israeli authorities.

The new mayor's first challenge in office involved a burst sewage pipe in the Old City. He said it took a week of negotiating with Israeli authorities to obtain a permit for municipal workers to enter the area and fix the pipe.

The Palestinians hope to one day establish an independent state in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip - areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. That dream is far off after two decades of failed peace talks, and with the rival Hamas militant group controlling Gaza.

Mortdechai, resident of nearby Jewish settlement of Qiryat Arba, is passing by a dividing wall and says he has no intention of leaving.

"Jews have lived here for thousands of years, this is the city of Abraham, this is the first Jewish city and this is where we're going to stay," he says.

Britain's Prince William travelled to the West Bank on Wednesday (27JUNE2018), spreading a message of peace as he met with the Palestinian president and toured a Palestinian refugee camp.

William was received by Mayor Musa Hadid when he arrived at Ramallah municipality.

The Duke of Cambridge met with Palestinian children, ate hummus, falafel and other local dishes and watched a traditional Arab folk dance.

The prince is the first member of the British royal family to pay an official visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Though William's trip is being billed as non-political, he is meeting with Israeli and Palestinian leaders and visiting sites at the heart of the century-old conflict.

The Palestinians have been eager to welcome the prince, hoping his visit will give them a boost as they struggle with a Trump administration they consider biased in favor of Israel.

Israeli troops clashed with Palestinian protesters near Bet El settlement in the West Bank on Monday, as protests continue in the region following US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Trump's announcement, which upended decades of US policy and a longstanding international consensus - has sparked widespread protests in recent days.

The Palestinians staged three "days of rage" after Trump's dramatic announcement, with clashes breaking out in flashpoints across the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, and Gaza militants firing rockets into Israel.

Four people in Gaza were killed. In the West Bank, there were dozens of injuries, but no deaths.

Israeli and Palestinian claims to Jerusalem's eastern sector form the emotional core of their conflict, and Trump's announcement was seen as siding with the Israelis and has drawn wide international criticism.

An escalating dispute over metal detectors at a contested Jerusalem shrine turned violent on Friday, setting off widespread clashes between Palestinian stone-throwers and Israeli troops. Three Palestinians were killed and several dozen injured by live rounds, rubber bullets and beatings, medics said.

The confrontations in Jerusalem and the West Bank erupted after midday Friday prayers, the highlight of the Muslim religious week. Thousands performed the prayers in the streets, rather than in the shrine, to protest Israel's decision earlier in the week to install metal detectors at the gates to the walled compound.

Muslim leaders had urged the faithful not to enter the Muslim-administered site until Israel removes the metal detectors. They portrayed Israel's measures as an encroachment on Muslim rights - a charge Israel denies.

The city's top Muslim cleric told worshippers on Friday that he expects a "long test of wills" with Israel.

Israel also dug in, saying the devices would stay.

Israel had installed the metal detectors after three Palestinians, all citizens of Israel, launched an attack from the shrine a week ago, killing two Israeli policemen. Police said the metal detectors are needed to prevent further attacks.

After the prayers, confrontations erupted in several areas around Jerusalem's walled Old City and at West Bank flashpoints.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said 41 Palestinians were taken to hospitals or clinics with injures from live fire, rubber bullets and beatings. About 150 Palestinians were treated for tear gas inhalation.

Local residents of an Israeli settlement in the West Bank said on Sunday they were coming to terms with an attack the day before on a nine-year-old girl outside her home, and were reassured by the presence of reinforced Israeli security forces in the area.

Initial reports indicated that Saturday's attack was carried out by a sniper, but police said they were investigating all options, including the possibility that the Psagot settlement was infiltrated by a Palestinian militant.

"We found a little girl who told us while she was fully conscious that she saw in front of her, a masked man and he had shot her from a distance of two metres. Several bullets. We could see bullet holes which had penetrated through the throat and went out through the back," said Israel Ganz, Deputy Head of the Binyamin Regional Council.

A surgeon at Shaarei Tzedek hospital in Jerusalem, where the girl was taken, told Channel 2 TV that she was fully conscious when she was rushed in.

He said it was not yet clear if the girl had sustained a bullet wound or been attacked by a knife.

Residents and local officials at the settlement believe the attacker came over, cut a hole in the fence and climbed up near the house where the girl was attacked.

"Throughout the whole night we were searching the settlement to find the terrorist and right now we believe he is no longer in the settlement," said Ganz.

According to Aviva Winter, a resident of the Psagot settlement, it was decided to open schools, nurseries and kindergartens on Sunday after the army searched the area.

"The whole night, they did a thorough search in all the houses, and around the houses, and even in the different open areas, and the army is still everywhere. So we feel quite secure. We hope that he is not hiding anywhere. But obviously it's not easy for us," said Winter.

She added that psychologists were at hand to help frightened children.

Tensions are high between Israelis and Palestinians in the area.

An Israeli soldier was recently shot and killed by a sniper in the West Bank city of Hebron.

The increase in violence adds to the mistrust between Israel and the Palestinians as the two sides hold negotiations which restarted after a hiatus of nearly five years.

Talks collapsed in 2008, and US Secretary of State John Kerry spent months earlier this year persuading the sides to get talks back on track again.

Israel says security concerns are a top priority in negotiations.
