Hebron mosque massacre anniversary; Jewish taxi driver buried.

Palestinians in the West Bank town of Hebron observed a commercial

strike on Tuesday (14/2) to mark the first anniversary of the

massacre of 29 Palestinians by an Israeli settler in the Tomb of

the Patriarchs, an ancient mosque. Israeli security forces were on

high alert in Hebron and throughout the West Bank, Jerusalem and

Tel Aviv in anticipation of violence connected to the anniversary.

The attack on February 25, 1994, was the worst incident of

violence against Palestinians by a lone Israeli and set off a

sequence of suicide bombings across Israel in which some 60 people

have been killed. The anniversary was marked today according to

the Muslim calendar. In Jerusalem, where a Jewish taxi driver, who

was stabbed to death on Monday, was buried, Israeli Prime

Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, said his government was reluctant to lift

the closure of Gaza and the West Bank "until the Palestinian

Authority proves that it is committed to fighting terror". The

Authority responded by ordering a raid on the Khan Yunis district

of Gaza, where 200 kilogrammes of gunpowder and 25,000

pornographic playing cards were seized and later burned.

Arafat rejects Jenin terms; youths confront troops.

PLO Chairman, Yasser Arafat, rejected on Friday (17/2) an Israeli

offer that he take administrative control of the occupied West

Bank town of Jenin as a first step towards widening Palestinian

self-rule. Speaking to a congregation in a Gaza mosque, in his

first public reaction to the proposal, Arafat described his

Thursday meeting with Rabin at the Israel-Gaza border as

"difficult." Violence flared on the West Bank on Friday, with

Nablus seeing the fiercest clashes. Palestinians threw stones at

Israeli soldiers, who returned tear gas and rubber bullets. In

Hebron, clashes broke out for the fifth consecutive day. Hebron

has been tense since the first anniversary of the massacre by an

Israeli settler of 29 Palestinian worshippers at the Tomb of the

Patriachs. In Jerusalem, the Israeli Army imposed tight security

for the Friday prayers, following intelligence warnings of

intended terror attacks by Muslim fundamentalists during the month

In the West Bank town of Hebron thousands of Palestinians

celebrated the third anniversary of Yasser Arafat's call for an

independent Palestinian state.

Palestinian police paraded as crowds burned Israeli flags and

stamped over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netahyahu's photo.

In Bethlehem, hundreds of Palestinians attended the funeral of

Jimmy Kanawati, who was shot dead by Israeli soldiers on

Friday night.

Kanawati, a Christian Palestinian, held a Salvadoran passport.

STORYLINE:

The Israeli military shot and killed a Palestinian militant on Monday, as he attempted to escape arrest in the West Bank village of Al Fawwa, Palestinian witnesses and the army said.

A second militant was later detained by the Israeli military forces.

Witnesses said both men were members of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent off shoot of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah Party.

The Israeli army said the man, Ahmed Abu Mujahed, died as soldiers attempted to treat him.

His body was left in the area for Palestinian emergency services to collect in the early hours of Tuesday, once the operation was over.

It was then taken to the morgue at a hospital at Hebron, West Bank.

The Palestinian militants were believed to have been involved in terrorist activities in the West Bank.

Israeli security forces destroyed their equipment and cars that belonged to them.

PLO leader Yasser Arafat promised in Jericho on Friday (24/3) to wage a new campaign against terrorism. He made the pledge after holding talks with U.S. vice president Al Gore, who responded by saying the commitment was an important step towards Middle East peace. Gore said Arafat had made it clear he would proceed with the criminal prosecution of "those who are suspected of terrorist activities." Arafat said he would set up new state security courts. The U.S. Vice President announced an aid package for the Gaza Strip and said President Clinton had also authorised Palestinians to export a range of goods to the United States. Before visiting Jericho, U.S. Vice President Al Gore visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem. At Yad Vashem, Gore saw a memorial to the 6 million Jews killed by the Nazis and expressed horror at the scope of the genocide. While in Jerusalem, Gore and Israeli Environment Minister Yossi Sarid Micha Goldman signed the "GLOBE" bilateral agreement, which links the ecological findings of Israeli students by computer to those of their

STORYLINE:

Israeli soldiers manned various checkpoints throughout the West Bank on Saturday, a day before presidential elections to replace late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

Palestinian officials complained that troop deployment and checkpoint procedures had not changed, despite a pledge by Israel to ease restrictions ahead of the vote.

At one Gaza checkpoint, hundreds of cars were waiting to cross on Saturday morning.

Palestinians reported that a 60-year-old taxi passenger was killed by army fire at the barrier. The army said soldiers fired at a gunman approaching on foot.

Israeli military officials said an effort was being made to speed up passage through roadblocks, but that security remained the top priority.

On Friday, Palestinian gunmen killed a soldier and wounded three in an ambush near the West Bank city of Nablus, prompting Israel to warn Palestinian leaders that it would reconsider its promise if an easing of restrictions is exploited by militants.

Israel delivered the warning through international observers headed by former US President Jimmy Carter and former French Prime Minister Michel Rocard, according to a spokesman for Carter's team, Les Campbell.

Observer teams were touring checkpoints on Saturday to see whether restrictions were indeed being eased, Campbell said.

STORYLINE:

Israeli troops entered the West Bank town of Ramallah early on Monday, but the army denied reports that soldiers had entered Yasser Arafat's compound and completed destruction of buildings hit in an earlier operation.

One Palestinian was killed and two wounded during exchanges of fire, Palestinian doctors said.

The army said two soldiers were also wounded.

The Israeli military said soldiers surrounded Arafat's compound to prevent gunmen from entering but did not enter themselves.

Palestinians officials also said the Israeli forces remained outside the compound.

Arafat was inside the compound and was unharmed, the officials said.

Troops moved into the West Bank town hours after the Palestinian leader named a new, streamlined cabinet and hours before Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was to meet U-S President George W Bush in Washington.

The latest incursion began around 0400 local time (0100 GMT) when tanks, armoured personnel carriers, jeeps and infantry on foot entered the town.

Soldiers moved among houses around the Amari refugee camp, next to Ramallah, and into the suburb of Beituniyah.

Israeli military sources said the purpose of the latest incursion into the West Bank town was to arrest terrorist suspects.

They said the troops would remain in Ramallah for a "limited time" and had arrested about a dozen suspects overnight, witnesses said.

Also, soldiers detained several suspects in night time raids in other parts of the West Bank, the statement said.

Israeli incursions are an almost daily affair.

On Sunday, troops entered the town of Tulkarem.

STORYLINE :

An explosion injured a 25-year-old Palestinian man as he was parking his car near his home in a refugee camp in the northern West Bank town of Tulkarem on Monday.

Imad Abu Diab was an activist in the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad, according to the governor of Tulkarem.

He had moderate to serious facial injuries including a broken jaw, according to a local doctor, Ahmed Abu Baker.

Witnesses said the circumstances of the explosion were not immediately clear.

They say they heard an explosion and saw the right side of the car burning, then pulled Abu Diab out of the car.

Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, hundreds of settlers from Neve Tsuf demonstrated outside the Prime Minister's office.

They called on Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to be harsher on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

Since September, 25 Jewish settlers have been killed in roadside ambushes or drive-by shootings on West Bank roads.

After meeting Palestinian Authority president Yasser Arafat in the West Bank town of Ramallah on Monday (27/10), Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov accused Israel of failing to honour agreements it had made with the Palestinians on self-rule.

Amr was taken to a hospital in A-Ram, between Ramallah and Jerusalem, for treatment.

Since Friday there has been considerable tension over Arafat's appointments in security forces and the intention of Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia to resign.

Palestinians speculated that the gunmen were sending a message to stop criticising Arafat, but there was no hard evidence to back that up.

Amr has often complained about corruption and inefficiency in Arafat's administration.

Amr served as a Cabinet minister in the short-lived government of Mahmoud Abbas, who served as Arafat's first prime minister last year but resigned after only four months, complaining that he was given no power.

Abbas was the first to visit Amr in the hospital.

STORYLINE:

In the biggest sweep in months, Israeli troops hunting for militants stormed dozens of homes in the West Bank city of Nablus on Wednesday, ordering residents to line up at dawn as tanks blocked roads and helicopters hovered above.

Yasser Arafat denounced the raid as a "new war crime that the Israeli forces are committing against our people, our cities and our villages."

The Nablus raid was triggered by a weekend shooting attack at Kibbutz Metzer, an Israeli communal farm. The attack by a gunman left five Israelis dead, including two small children -- brothers aged four and five years -- and their mother.

Hundreds of soldiers backed by about 100 armored vehicles and helicopter gunships poured into Nablus before dawn Wednesday.

It was the biggest sweep in the city since Israel's "Defensive Shield" offensive in April, and military commentators said they expected the operation to go on for many days.

Troops have been in Nablus for most of the past seven months, enforcing curfews and manning checkpoints.

The focus of Wednesday's raid were several alleged militant strongholds -- the Old City, two neighborhoods near An Najah University as well as the Balata and Askar refugee camps on the outskirts of Nablus.

There were sporadic gunfights but no injuries. Several explosions were heard in Nablus' Old City, or Casbah, apparently set off by soldiers breaking open doors.

Tanks sealed all exits from the Casbah, a maze of alleys and underground passages and the scene of fierce fighting in April. Troops took over a nearby girls' elementary school as a makeshift base.

Israel declared Nablus a closed military zone, and soldiers barred journalists from taking pictures or talking to those rounded up. The army said 30 suspected militants were arrested in the raid.

STORYLINE:

Israeli forces entered the West Bank town of Tulkarem, on Monday, in reprisal to last week's terrorist attacks by Palestinian militants.

The attacks included an assault on an Israeli banquet hall in which a Palestinian gunman from Tulkarem killed six Israelis before being shot dead.

At about 3 a.m. (0100 GMT) Monday, dozens of Israeli tanks and armored personnel carriers, backed by helicopter gunships, entered Tulkarem.

Palestinian gunmen shot at Israeli troops, drawing return fire, with the heaviest fighting coming from the adjacent Tulkarem refugee camp, where many gunmen had fled after Israeli troops took over the town.

Doctors said one civilian was killed, a second critically wounded and that fourteen more were wounded by gunfire.

The governor of Tulkarem, Izzedine Sharif, urged residents over mosque loudspeakers to defy the curfew and resist Israeli troops.

Troops took over eight buildings, including a local college and the villa of the mayor, sandbagging rooftops and raising Israeli flags.

Witnesses said soldiers also commandeered the police operations room and detained two Palestinian policemen.

Israeli troops went from house to house looking for suspected militants, including members of the Al Aqsa Brigades, a militant group linked to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement.

Tanks also encircled the nearby Tulkarem and Nur Shams refugee camps.

Gunmen gathered in the alleys of the Tulkarem camp, shooting at Israeli tanks and drawing Israeli machine gun fire.

In 16 months of fighting, Israeli troops have repeatedly entered Palestinian cities, taking control of several neighbourhoods for limited periods.

Monday's raid into Tulkarem was the largest and marks the first time that Israeli forces have occupied an entire town.

Thousands of mourners marched through the streets of the West Bank town of Tulkarem on Tuesday in the funeral procession of Raed Karmi, the West Bank militia leader killed in a bomb blast on Monday.

Karmi, 27, was the leader of the Al Aqsa Brigades in Tulkarem, a militia linked to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement.

The explosion outside his hideout was widely attributed to Israel.

Five thousand mourners and dozens of gunmen firing in the air attended the funeral, calling for revenge for their hero.

The two largest Palestinian factions said Tuesday they would stick to a truce with Israel despite Karmi's death.

However, supporters of the militia leader did take revenge, killing an Israeli soldier and wounding an officer who had left their armored personnel carrier to question two Palestinians at a checkpoint near Tulkarem.

Karmi had boasted of killing two Tel Aviv restaurant owners, while Israel claimed he had killed a total of nine Israelis.

In September Karmi survived a missile attack on his car.
