The Israeli military said Israeli forces surrounded a house where the wanted man was suspected of hiding in Jenin late on Monday.

Israeli officials declined to name the wanted operative, though Palestinians identified him as Majdi Abu Alhaija.

After forces repeatedly called on Alhaija to surrender, they demolished the house, the military said.

Hundreds of Palestinians rioted in the area, hurling rocks and firebombs at the Israeli forces, the military said.

A Palestinian security official said Palestinian gunmen exchanged heavy fire with Israeli soldiers, and 20 Palestinians were taken to hospital after being wounding by Israeli rubber bullets.

An Israeli paramilitary border police officer also was moderately wounded in the fighting.

Israelis arrested Alhaija, his brother and his 15-year-old son, the Palestinian official said.

3G data services are coming to the West Bank in agreement struck with Israeli authorities this week.

It means Palestinians will finally be able to stream films online, make calls over the internet and play catch-up with the rest of the world.

STORY-LINE:

3G is soon to hit the West Bank.

It's exciting news in an area where mobile phone ownership is high.

On the streets of Ramallah mobile phones are everywhere, but until now it's been a frustratingly slow service for users.

Under interim peace agreements, Israel controls cellular networks in the West Bank.

Israeli cellular carriers transmit 3G, but Palestinian networks have been confined to the slower 2G networks.

This now looks set to change as Israeli Defence Force's Major General Yoav Mordechai and Palestinian Minister of Civil Affairs Hussen al-Sheikh signed an agreement granting Palestinian mobile carriers 3G high-speed data services in the West Bank this week.

The new agreement won't enable 4G service for Palestinians, nor will it cover the Gaza Strip, but it's a step forward say supporters.

The CEO of Palestine's main telecom company, Jawwal, welcomes the move.

"We are extremely happy that Israel has finally released the frequencies for the 3G and allowed the Palestinian companies to use 3G services," says Ammar Aker.

"It's an achievement even though it is a late move. Our hope was to use 4G but still we will stick with 3G and fight for getting 4G."

"Our aim is to gave the Palestinian customer better services within our own limits and despite Israeli restrictions."

The lack of high-speed access has been a constant source of frustration for young professionals, forcing many to seek creative solutions, sign up with Israeli carriers or scramble to find a wifi network whenever the internet is needed.

But that's about to change.

"Six months from today, Palestinians will be able to use all the internet applications everywhere and this will make a difference for them and furthermore there will be a good chance for Palestinian computer companies to develop special applications for the Palestinians which means creating new jobs in the IT field," expands Aker.

The Palestinians are among 16 markets, including Cuba and Eritrea, who still use older 2G technology, according to the International Telecommunication Union, a UN agency.

Without 3G, Palestinians are unable to access Internet messaging services like Whatsapp, make Internet phone calls or stream videos.

Muamar Orabi, the general director of Wattan TV, says Palestinian media will finally be able to catch-up with competitors.

"Such a move will open up a new future for the Palestinian companies and the Palestinian media which is still using 2G technology meaning we are five years behind in this technology, while other countries are using 4G."

And for mobile phone shop owners, it will hopefully bring about a boom in business.

Assad Qutob is confident he'll be selling more Palestinian sim cards in the near future.

"We have a lot of Israeli 3G sim cards used in the Palestinian areas so the use of 3G by Palestinian communication companies will definitely decrease the number of Israeli sim cards and we hope it will happen very soon," he explains.

"Yalla Yalla" features performances by Palestinian and European companies and aims to introduce theatre to a new generation.

The young Palestinians in the audience attentively follow this moving tale about sadness, parental love and the search for true happiness.

In the play everyone gets involved to try to restore Jihan's smile: from the sun itself to a flamboyant Italian painter.

Based on a story by Egyptian-Canadian writer, Karim Alrawi, "Jihan's Smile" is one of the many shows on offer at this 10-day festival, that includes theatre performances by groups from Poland, Sweden and France.

Marina Barham is director of the festival and the Al-Harah theatre. She says that the idea is to the foster positive change through theatre and introduce this art to a new generation of Palestinians.

"Through our festival we want our voice to be heard all over the world and to say that Palestinian theatre is professional, that it's skilled and of high quality. We want to bring back joy to our children. Theatre and art are a way of resistance against the Israeli occupation", Barham says.

Palestinian actor, Nicola Zraineh, plays Jihan's increasingly worried father. The actor is one of the co-founders of Al-Harah theatre and has been working on stage since the year 2000.

With shows available mainly in the big cities, Palestinian actors bring theatre directly to people's homes, performing in villages as well as Palestinian refugee camps, Zraineh says.

In return, Palestinian politics, society and traditions offer constant inspiration for the local theatre. As Zraineh explains:

"We Palestinians have lots of stories to tell and perform on stage: stories related to politics, society, traditions and customs that we try to change in a positive way through theatre so as to bring a positive effect to children, youth and to the society in general."

Palestinian actors are not limited to the local scene but travel around the world to share their art, from Arab countries to Asia, Zraineh adds.

Palestinian theatre has been around since the beginning of the 20th century and has been asserting itself on the cultural scene ever since, says "Jihan's Smile" Director, Raeda Ghazaleh.

It was in the 80's that local theatre became more established, Ghazaleh says but laments that it's plagued by a lack of funds.

At a theatre in Bet Jalla, near Bethlehem, Swedish theatre group Ogonblicksteatern is performing in front of a special audience: children aged 6 months to 1 and a half years.

The Swedish play, "Here I Am" appeals to the youngest of audience members and deals with the babies' identities and sense of self.

The idea is that from the first months of their lives babies are capable of following a theatre play, says Johanna Salander, director of "Here I Am" and artistic director of the Ogonblicksteatern group.

This is the third time that Salander has visited the West Bank to work with Palestinian groups; the "Yalla Yalla" festival, she says, is an opportunity for both to learn something from each other.

The "Yalla Yalla" festival runs from 7 to 16 April 2016.

Israeli soldiers patrolled the West Bank city of Nablus on Sunday, combing the area for suspected Palestinian gunmen who killed an Israeli couple.

Soldiers arrested at least one Palestinian and raided and searched his home, according to the man's brother.

The reason for the arrest was not clear and the Israeli military did not immediately return a request for comment.

The Palestinian government in the West Bank has announced the upcoming municipal elections will not take place in the Gaza Strip.

The territory is ruled by Hamas and the Palestinian Prime Minister said the Islamic militant group had refused to let them be held there.

STORYLINE

Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah sits at the head of the table at a cabinet meeting in Bethlehem.

They're discussing changes to plans for the upcoming municipal elections, which Hamdallah claims have been caused by Hamas' refusal to allow them to be held in the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian Authority of President Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah movement run autonomous enclaves in the West Bank.

Palestinians have been split since Hamas seized Gaza in 2007 from Abbas' forces in bloody street battles.

Repeated reconciliation attempts have failed.

Hamas withdrew from local elections in 2012. The last general election, with both Hamas and Fatah competing, took place in 2006.

Situated in central Ramallah the 'Palestine Aquarium' has 250 rare underwater species.

The Palestine Aquarium has recently opened to visitors and is proving very popular so far:

"I saw the aquarium on television so I loved to bring my grandchildren to see it. We had a fun time here and the boys were happy. There are many kinds of fish and the place is clean and it will be nice for the school students to visit this place," says Ramallah resident Julia Khouri.

The aquarium is a private venture set up by two Palestinian entrepreneurs. They were inspired by their visits abroad and wanted sea life lovers in the West Bank city of Ramallah to be able to see aquatic creatures themselves.

"When I was travelling to other countries I was visiting the aquariums in Europe and some Arab countries so we decided to do this project here. Although there is no sea in the West Bank we believed that we could do it. We have made great efforts until this project has been completed," says one of the owners, Amjad Amer.

The space in central Ramallah covers 820 square metres and has a display of 250 rare underwater species.

It's split into two sections, as aquarium guide Dalia Abu Shamsia explains:

"In the first section we have the turtles and some kinds of fish and in the second section there are crocodiles, snakes and fish. We have about two hundred and fifty kinds of fish and we are going to bring more," she says.

Amer says the main difficulty in setting up the aquarium was the paperwork involved in crossing the species into the West Bank.

All crossings into the West Bank are under Israeli control and the bureaucracy can at times be burdensome.

"Some of the fish died at the harbour and we have been working until now to import the types we don't have," he explains.

Originally planned to open in April 2018 the project had to be postponed until late July because of Israeli restrictions on the import of certain types of fish.

The aquarium houses a collection of amphibians and tropical plants as well as fish.

Entrance costs 30 New Israeli Shekels (8 US Dollars) while children under 10 years old pay 20 New Israeli Shekels (5.5 US Dollars).

It's a way for climbers to perfect their skills indoors before taking to the rocky hills of the West Bank.

STORY-LINE:

First a foot, then a hand: with each move he ascends a little further.

He's one of a number of climbing fans scaling the walls at the Palestinian Territories' first ever rock climbing gym.

This is 'bouldering', a climbing style that uses no ropes or harnesses.

Routes are marked by different coloured holds which indicate varying degrees of difficulty.

Marketing consultant Shadan Nasar has been climbing for ten months.

She enjoys the strategic thinking required to solve the climbing puzzles.

"Climbing has become an important part of my life. Having this sport here is very nice because we face lots of pressures in our lives and for me yoga and climbing are so important. When you came here you learn how to solve the problems you face and this helps you in your life," she says.

Filmmaker Majdal Sobh attempts to tackle a route.

She took up the sport six months ago and this new facility is an opportunity to hone her skills indoors.

"It's not always possible to climb in the mountains and outside, so it's good to have this place for training and for perfecting our climbing skills and to have a climbing community in Palestine," she says.

American Tim Bruns is a co-founder of Wadi Climbing.

"We decided to open this gym because we were students in Jordan, studying Arabic, and when we came to Palestine and saw that there weren't a lot of recreational opportunities for young people and so we were kind of inspired by the Jordanian climbing community and figured that we could maybe do something similar here," he explains.

Wadi Climbing has been organising climbing trips around the hills of the West Bank since 2013.

But this new indoor gym means people can practice without taking a trip to the countryside.

And its founders hope it will help build a climbing community here.

Mohamed Qandeel began climbing seven months ago.

He's doing a few pull ups to build essential upper body strength.

Qandeel thinks the activity will appeal to lots of people.

"It's something great and nice and I encourage a lot of people to try this as a sport and as a hobby," he says.

"This sport does something to you inside; sometimes when I ask myself why I like it I don't have an answer, but it's beautiful and makes you want to do it more and more."

The gym has all the equipment climbers might need for a bouldering session, including the special shoes designed to keep toes hanging on to even the smallest ledge.

But there are plans to expand further.

Its wall is just a few metres high, restricted by the low building height.

The Wadi Climbing founders hope one day to find a premises that will accommodate a much higher rock face.

It would mean members could learn how to climb with ropes and harnesses.

The gym has all the equipment climbers might need for a bouldering session, including the special shoes designed to keep toes hanging on to even the smallest ledge.

But there are plans to expand further.

Its wall is just a few metres high, restricted by the low building height.

The Wadi Climbing founders hope one day to find a premises that will accommodate a much higher rock face.

It would mean members could learn how to climb with ropes and harnesses.

Israeli troops on Friday used tear gas to disperse Palestinian protesters near the northern West Bank village of Kariut.

Waving Palestinian flags, the protesters had gathered on the 48th anniversary of the "Naksa," or setback, the term the Palestinians use for the defeat in the 1967 Arab-Israeli (Six-Day) war.

During that war, Israel conquered the Golan Heights from Syria, the West Bank and east Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Gaza Strip and Sinai peninsula from Egypt in just six days of fighting.

Israel returned Sinai to Egypt under a 1979 peace accord, and withdrew from Gaza in 2005.

A few hundred demonstrators also gathered in Susiya, a Palestinian village under the threat of demolition by Israel.

Susiya is one of more than a dozen "unrecognised" Palestinian herding communities in the southern West Bank, a desert-like area close to the Green Line, Israel's pre-1967 war frontier with the West Bank, when it was ruled by Jordan.

Its 160-odd residents live in shacks, caves and tents with cement-reinforced walls.

Israeli authorities say the structures are unlicensed.

Residents and their supporters say Israel refuses to grant permits as part of a plan to clear the area for future territorial claims, a charge Israel denies.

A group of rabbis have joined Palestinians in the West Bank to help replant olive trees uprooted by Jewish settlers.

They aim to show solidarity with Palestinians, as well as help rabbinical students to "learn the facts on the ground".

STORYLINE:

On a crisp morning, Rabbi Ian Chesir-Teran and dozens of rabbinical students from the US walk past the Biblical-looking landscapes of dust roads and olive groves to reach the area of South Hebron hills.

They join Palestinian villagers whose olive groves were uprooted by Jewish settlers living in the vicinity, and have come here to help them replant.

When Rabbi Ian Chesir-Teran crosses from Israel to the West Bank he takes off his kippah, a traditional skullcap worn by religious Jews, for fear of being targeted by fellow Jews.

Chesir-Teras is a rabbinic educator with T'ruah's, a US-based network of rabbis and Jewish communities committed to the protection of human rights in North America and Israel.

As the group walk to reach the olive groves, they pass by rocks with the Star of David spray-painted, a mark left by Jewish settlers.

But, Chesir-Teran is not discouraged. He says helping replant the trees is an attempt to show solidarity with the Palestinians and for the rabbinical students to "learn the facts on the ground".

"They've seen olive trees that have been uprooted by (Jewish) settlers. They've seen Hebrew graffiti sprawled on property, private property, belonging to Palestinians. And, so, we've come to show solidarity for our hosts by replanting trees that have been uprooted," he explains.

The villages of At-Tuwani and Ar-Rakkes are in the West Bank's part known as Area C, which remains under exclusive Israeli control and is home to dozens of Israeli settlements.

Israel places severe restrictions on Palestinian development there and home demolitions are not unusual.

In rare cases, Israel has also evicted Jewish settlers who have squatted illegally.

But settlers generally have a much easier time receiving building permits, and the government often retroactively legalises unauthorised outposts, looks the other way or offers compensation to uprooted settlers.

As part of interim peace deals in the 1990s, the West Bank was carved up into autonomous and semi-autonomous Palestinian areas, known as Areas A and B, and Area C, which is home to some 400,000 Israeli settlers.

The Palestinians claim all of the West Bank and say that Area C, home to an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 Palestinians, is crucial to the economic development of their future state.

26 year-old Tyler Dratch, a rabbinical student at Hebrew College in Boston, says human rights are essential to religious teachings and helping the most vulnerable is a duty of each person.

"Our hope is that we can integrate these stories and continue to have basically continue to allow Israel to be a part of our Jewish story, while also making sure that we're caring for the most vulnerable people as our neighbours and in our community," he says.

Musab Rabie, a Palestinian villager of At-Tuwani, welcomes the support.

"Of course, it feels a bit strange because we are attacked by the Jews themselves. In general, we look in a positive way to anyone that is trying to help," he says.

This gesture of replanting trees has been arranged by the organisation "T'ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights".

The Palestinian family of US congresswoman Rashida Tlaib said Friday they are against the outspoken politician's visit to the West Bank if it is under Israel's conditions.

"If Rashida's visit to her homeland is under conditions, we reject that," Tlaib's uncle Bassam Tlaib told The Associated Press.

"It's Rashida's right as a Palestinian to come and visit her family and country," he added.

Israel barred Tlaib and fellow Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar from visiting Jerusalem and the West Bank over their support for the international boycott movement, but said Tlaib could visit her relatives in the West Bank on humanitarian grounds.

The Interior Ministry released a letter purportedly signed by Tlaib in which she promised not to advocate boycotts during her visit.

But the congresswoman said Friday she won't visit her relatives in the West Bank.

In an official statement, Tlaib said "visiting my grandmother under these oppressive conditions meant to humiliate me would break my grandmother's heart."

Israel barred her and Omar following an unprecedented request from US President Donald Trump.

Tlaib and Omar had planned to visit Jerusalem and the Israeli-occupied West Bank next week on a tour partly organised by a Palestinian group.

The two are outspoken critics of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians and support the international movement boycotting Israel.

The two newly elected Muslim members of Congress have also sparred with Trump, who tweeted before the decision that it would be a "show of weakness" to allow them in.

Israel controls entry and exit points to the West Bank, which it seized in the 1967 Mideast war along with east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, territories the Palestinians want for a future state.

Hundreds of mourners marched through the streets of Al Jalama in northern West Bank on Tuesday, carrying the body of 21-year-old Abdullah Tawalbeh who was killed on Monday by Israeli troops.

The Israeli military said that two Palestinians threw an explosive device at troops at a northern West Bank checkpoint who then opened fire, killing Tawalbeh and wounding another.

Palestinian medics said Abdullah Tawalbeh died from gunshot wounds and a second person was hospitalised with moderate wounds.

No Israeli soldiers were wounded.

Last week, Israeli police shot and killed a Palestinian teenager who allegedly attempted to stab security personnel at a West Bank checkpoint near Jerusalem.

Israel has faced a three-year wave of Palestinian attacks in the West Bank that have greatly decreased in recent months.

Critics have accused Israel of using excessive force.

A small group of Palestinian protesters in the West Bank pelted an American diplomatic vehicle with eggs on Monday in protest at the recent move of the US Embassy to Jerusalem.

Protesters held signs and shouted at members of the delegation who were visiting the West Bank from the US Consulate in Jerusalem.

The crowd told the Americans that they were not welcome in the West Bank before throwing eggs at their car as they drove away.

Monday's protest came a week after the US Embassy was moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The Palestinians claim Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem as their capital and viewed the embassy move as unfairly siding with Israel.

The Palestinians have severed most contacts with the US in protest at the move.
