Forty years after the end of the Vietnam war a collection of 58 photographs taken by the AP is being exhibited for the first time in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi.

The exhibition marks a homecoming that officials say is historic and an emblem of changing times.

AP's Saigon bureau won six Pulitzer Prizes for its Vietnam coverage, including four for photography.

All four are on display among the works by 21 photographers whose pictures are part of the news cooperative's archive of thousands of wartime photographs.

Among them is Huynh Cong "Nick" Ut's 1972 photograph of a screaming 9-year-old girl, after an aerial napalm attack burned the clothes off her body.

It is known as "Napalm Girl," and earned Ut a 1973 Pulitzer and celebrity status in Vietnam.

Major celebrations in Vietnam marked the recent 40th anniversary of defeating the Americans on April 30, 1975, when northern communist forces seized control of US-backed South Vietnam, ending the war.

When the leaders of the United States and North Korea hold their second summit in Vietnam at the end of this month, it will be difficult to escape the long shadow of the Vietnam War.

During the conflict, the US was Vietnam's enemy, while North Korea was its friend.

In the middle of a rice field in northern Vietnam, 14 headstones remain as a symbol of that friendship.

They mark the former burial grounds of North Korean pilots who died while fighting alongside the Vietnamese against the Americans.

Their story began in 1966 when the Vietnam war escalated to the north.

About 150 members of the North Korean military were sent to an airbase some 70km northeast of Hanoi.

They were there to train local forces and to fly combat missions on Soviet-made Mikoyan MiG jet fighters.

Among the twenty four pilots who participated in flying missions, fourteen were killed over a two-year period.

"When they died, Vietnamese people treated them the same as Vietnamese martyrs who sacrificed for the country," said Duong Van Dau, caretaker of a special cemetery created to house the remains of the North Koreans who died.

A plot of high ground was chosen for the cemetery. All tombs faced north east, in the direction of North Korea.

In 2002, their remains were repatriated to North Korea. But the headstones remain, lined in two rows behind a memorial that reads, in Vietnamese, "Here used to lie 14 North Korean comrades."

Dau himself joined the army and marched south to fight for the communist north in 1966. He was discharged three years later after getting shot in the knee,

"For the North Korean pilots who fought to protect our country and died for our country, I salute them. Being a soldier myself, I have great compassion for them. I see them as my comrades, regardless of the nationality," Dau said.

STORYLINE

A parade commemorating the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam was was held in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday morning.

Tuesday marked 40 years since the Communist north seized the city, once the South Vietnam capital known as Saigon, to reunify the country.

Among the officials attending the parade was Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and President Truong Tan Sang.

On April 30, 1975, North Vietnamese tanks rolled through the gates of the Presidential Palace, the heart of the US-backed Saigon government.

The fall of Saigon was the the official end to the Vietnam War and the US's decade-long involvement in southeast Asia.

During the decade of US involvement, the war killed some an estimated three (m) million Vietnamese and 58-thousand Americans.

STORYLINE

A group of former US Marines took part in a commemoration ceremony on Thursday at the site of the old US Embassy in Saigon to honour the last two US servicemen killed in the Vietnam war.

The Marines helped Americans evacuate Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh city, as it fell to Communist forces 40 years ago.

They dedicated a plaque to two fallen comrades, Corporal Charles McMahon and Lance Corporal Darwin Judge, who died on April 29, 1975, when their post near the airport was hit by a rocket.

The fall of Saigon was the official end to the Vietnam War and the US's decade-long involvement in southeast Asia.

Some 58,000 Americans were killed in the war along with up to 250,000 South Vietnamese allies and an estimated three million communist fighters and civilians.

A book of condolences has been opened at the United States Embassy in Vietnam's capital Hanoi for those who wish to share their messages and pay respect to late Senator John McCain.

McCain died on Saturday at the age of 81 in his home in Arizona.

People in Vietnam are remembering the senator and war veteran as having played an important role in normalizing relations between their country and the United States.

McCain was captured in 1967 when he parachuted into Hanoi's Truc Bach Lake after his Navy aircraft was shot down during a bombing mission.

He spent over five years in the prison known as the "Hanoi Hilton."

STORYLINE

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton presided over a repatriation ceremony at Hanoi airport on Friday for the remains of three US soldiers who were missing in action during the Vietnam war.

The soldiers' remains are being flown to Hawaii for DNA identification.

Clinton was in the Vietnamese capital for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Forum, the region's most important security conference.

She departed on a separate plane after the ceremony.

Since the war ended in 1975, 655 remains have been repatriated from Vietnam, according to the US Missing Personnel Office.

Another 1,720 US servicemen are still unaccounted for throughout Southeast Asia, 1,313 of those in Vietnam, the US says.
